Inflated admission prices, ripping off bands, and now apparently bullying people seem to be part and parcel of all that is “Daytona’s”. Though most in the punk/ hardcore community might not, there are still many who might remember the various incarnations of this club (under the same owner) coming and going due to the ongoing and well known “legal troubles” of the ownership. One thing that has remained almost constant has been the Sunday “Teen Nights”, most recently being in not only the dance area but also “hardcore” shows which feature all local bands. These Teen Night hardcore shows come at a hefty admission price of $10 per head to see only local bands. They attempt to justify this increased cost by saying that the kids get free pizza and sodas. Recently, a person by the name of Michelle Bancroft solicited bands on the messageboard of a local music website, Pheer.com, (20k+ hits a month) run by Pablo Van Winkle which was predictably met by a volley of negative responses, decrying the out and out SCAM that Daytona’s is running. The responses ranged from vulgar and inflammatory to informative, basing their concerns in the fact that although the club is charging $10 per admission, the bands hardly see a dime of that money. One local band played one of the teen nights and brought in over 300 paid admissions. Their compensation - $40. Meanwhile, the club took in $3,000 in gross receipts!! One of the persons who responded negatively, Jeremy, the webmaster for another local music website, was greeted with the revocation of his e-mail account, directly the result of the efforts made by Michelle Bancroft. Posting his story to the Pheer.com messageboard, he received an outpouring of support by the regular posters to the board, resulting in numerous e-mail bombs on Ms. Bancroft’s account. Her response? Attempt to have the Pheer.com website shut down. Below is her e-mail to Pablo VanWinkle – THIS IS MICHELLE BANCROFT, I EMAILED YOU LAST WEEK WITH A PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH SOME ONE ON YOUR WEB SITE!!! I SPOKE TO PABLO, THERE IS A GUY NAMED JEREMEY FROM THE PUNK HARD CORE SCENE IN YOUR MESSAGE BOARD EMAIL BOMBING ME WITH EMAILS FROM PORNO SITES AND HE IS HAVING EVERY ONE ON YOU MESSAGE BOARD THAT READS THE MESSAGES EMAIL ME AND CALL ME A CUNT!!!!!!! It is clear that she is of limited intellectual power and while stupidity is a sin in my book, the issue here is that she’s an incorrigible bitch above and beyond her idiocy) Ms. Bancroft as well as the ownership of Daytona’s Nightclub have clearly demonstrated a number of things: First – the almighty dollar rules in their world, at the expense of others. Put bluntly, even most shows featuring international artists at the world famous 930 Club range between $8 and $10. In my 16 years in the hardcore scene, I have never seen a show containing ALL LOCAL bands for more than $8. Bands who bring in 300 paid admissions usually receive between $500 and $1000 in compensation. How much does Daytona’s pay similar bands? $40. In short, their concern is not for the artists who are paying their bills with the customers they bring, but with the money they can rip young bands off with. Second – Implicit in their greedy $10 admission price is the demonstration of their disregard for hardcore and punk music and their desire to exploit the scene itself. Daytona’s history shows that they have never supported the local hardcore and punk scene in any way whatever. In fact, longtime residents of the area who are also fans of punk and hardcore can only count a handful of national punk and hardcore to be featured at the club. It is clearly hardcore’s recent swing in popularity which has prompted them to hold these shows in the first place. Third – Their bully tactics are another clear-cut indicator of exactly what type of worthless white trash scum they are. Upon receiving any negative response to their will, they would rather attempt to shut down the area’s two most informative and useful websites for punk and hardcore music, rather than attempting to reach out to the scene with those same websites. Clearly Jeremy and Pablo care more and do more for the local punk and hardcore music scene than anyone at Daytona’s will ever do, much less is willing to do. I call for all bands, record labels, booking agencies, management companies and music fans to totally and completely BOYCOTT DAYTONA’S. It is plain and easy to see that the scene is no concern of theirs, just the money they can make exploiting it. This area has too many legitimate, DIY show spaces and clubs who are supportive of the scene and ethical in their business practices for people to have to waste their time with the likes of Michelle Bancroft. Bands – do not play there. Fans – do not go there. Help rid the scene of walking, talking turds like the people at Daytona’s.
