Lived in a tall white building which we shared with Russians, Dutch, Americans and French. Remember Terry who i went off traveling with.Collected my work clothes and bars of chocolate plus about 25 Agorat on a Friday then took the bus to Jerusalem. Talked for hours on the grass outside with the noise of Jets in the background. You are welcome to write if you were there at this time - 1971. |

We were with volenteers and ulpan from countries all over the world. I worked in the pardesh and stood on the afron. I had to go back to Holland because of my very ill sister. In 2000 I went to Gvaram with my oldest (adult) son. We were welcomed bij several people and we drank tea in Raja's house. It felt very familiar to be there after so many years and it was nice to show the kibbutz and "my" house to my son. |

| Comments: | I just read of the death of Shuli Katz, Kibbutz nurse, my kibbutz "ema" while I was on Ulpan, and a kind, wonderful woman. She died in a rocket launch from Gaza on Monday.
If anyone remembers me, drop me a line. If you know how to reach Shuli's family, let me know that, as well. I have nothing but wonderful memories of my time spent in G'var Am. My deepest sympathies to the kibbutz and to Shuli's family. I remember that her daughter, Orli, was born when I was there. They are all in my prayers. |

| Comments: | My experience as a volunteer at beautiful Sdot Yam was indelibly memorable and I still often think of it with nostalgia. So many names and faces come to my memory. I worked with Susan in the ironing room, also in the kitchen sometimes. The view overlooking the Mediterranean was so peacefully beautiful it made the time doing mundane work fly by. One of the volunteers, Raya looked after the volunteers. Clive from England, stayed on and married a kibbutz girl. We would walk on the beach after a rainstorm looking for coins that may have been churned up. Friday afternoons we volunteers would hang out on our steps, drinking coffee and cheap wine, gorging on the treat of chocolate cake for shabbat. On our time off we would go hitching around the country and stay at other kibbutim. I was the resident hair-cutter when anyone needed a trim. Once I nipped a guy's ear while cutting his hair. So much fun, such wonderful memories, so long ago. It was the best time of my life. The kibbutzniks were kind and welcoming and I became part of the Ben Pardo family there. I kept in touch for quite a few years but unfortunately lost contact eventually. I wish I could remember all the names of the Danes, Aussies, Canucks, Swedes, Americans and others I met, but their faces are forever etched in my memory. If anyone from that far back at Sdot Yam remembers me or wants to share experiences, please do. |

| Comments: | Well! I planned on a year in Israel. Did not anticipate the Six Day War. But I stayed, because in my mind, at that time, to die for Israel was to die for G-d. The whole year was amazing! On the kibbutz I worked in the plastics factory, helped graft fruit trees in the nursery, picked apples off the ground (ouch, the back!) and cleaned public toilets of very ungrateful kibbutz teens who told me to be more quiet because they were sleeping! From there I went to Ashdod to teach school (with my minimal Hebrew) to classes of kids from Morocco! Tough kids is putting it lightly. The year was by far the most significant year of my life. I echo the sentiments of many in this site: I wouldn't have traded it for anything in the world! I would LOVE to hear from some other volunteers to Mishmar Haemek during that year. | Comments: | They used to poison cats at regavim. I remember seeing them staggering around hallucinating in their last moments. Arac was strong enough to kill cockroaches on contact. The british got drunk and very destructive but they were the prime entertainment like car crashes at a race.
I shared a cabin with some spoiled brat frat boy from california who was fascinated with some human bones that he dug out of a cave nearby. he wanted to bring them back to california in his luggage. Getting lost on the way back from haifa at sunset, the roads were full of people who spoke no known language; not russian or hebrew, not english or arabic just some ethnic yiddush that nobody else knew. it was surreal. I left for Eilat with a south african girl who had a plan. I was a good move, the kibbutz was a crazy place but for all I know it might have all been crazy. |

Tanja, Darren and I met Barbara at the bus terminal in Ashkelon in the middle of a bus bomb scare. Great introduction….. I’m not going to mention Shlomo, he’s best left to forget. We had a great time, lost all respect for vodka, I still can’t drink it. we loved pocketing as many cheese triangles as we could and making toast on the old radiators in the run down cabins. Benny Shaani, cow-shed manager was probably the nicest man I met. Udi was definitely the strangest. The kibbutznik’s golden mix was deadly but also a lot of fun. Tanja still talks about Passover and how she had to peel cow tongues for the entire kibbutz, nasty… that was the closest we came to eating meat. Anyone know if the parachute room is still there? Anyway, Tanja and I are still married. We have 2 kids, Asta 3yo and Gustav 6mths. We are living on Bornholm, a small Danish island out in the Baltic. We would love to hear from anyone remembering us. I remember other volunteers - Roy from . . . maybe Cleveland, but the US, anyway and Terry from Ireland. I worked in the chicken coops with Zvi (married to Tovah), who will probably be dead now. Such a good man; I admired him greatly. I also worked there with younger kibbutz member Bennie. We all had great fun on tours - but got in trouble when the existing volunteer couples illegally switched bunks in the youth hostel to be together! The kibbutz was such a small village - they had all heard about it before we returned. Ahhh, fond memories. |

| Comments: | This is mainly to anyone who remembers me on kibbutz gvaram during that period of time 1981-1994. There are too many people for whom i met over the years, but i am sure they remember me as i was almost a part of the furniture there over the years. I had worked mainly in the kitchen and of course the dreaded "ENVELOPE FACTORY" many of my best and worse times were spent on gvaram over the years and considering i was last there as a functioning volunteer in 1994 (visited for a week in 1996 with my wife reija whom i met in the summer of 1993 in gvaram as a volunteer) it feels like those memories are so clear even NOW!
I must say if it hadn't been for volunteers in the early years the envelope factory may never of really got off the ground, i say this because the members never wanted to work there-they were not so stupid as we thought-and who can blame them, when i think back to the terrible noise and monotonus work and having to work in the afternoon shift while other volunteers were lazying around by the pool-side-HAPPY MEMORIES! Now i look back and it feels like a dream and another life-time ago. I am now married to a Finn-woman who i met on gvaram in 1993 and living in Finland, we have 3 children, 2 girls and a boy. Since i have been living here i have had to learn the language and a profession, my profession is cook/chef and so all to all those people on the kibbutz who thought i would amount to nothing(mainly members)i proved you wrong. Anyone who does remember me please contact me and we can chat about "OLDTIMES" greetings to you all from someone who managed to live life after gvaram and survive. |

| Comments: | I went with a group of students from Northeastern Illinois University. I worked in the chicken coops with Mira. Getting up at 5 in the morning, walking up the hill to "lool dalet" and on those clear mornings, being able to see Mt. Hermon from there. After 32 years, I still keep in touch with Mira, Lydia, and my kibbutz family, the Gorens. I took my daughter for a short visit when she graduated from High School. I know the world is shrinking when I see Tama products at a local farm supply store or a "Zim" trailer on Route 14 here in Illinois. I will always treasure the times I had and the friends I made.

Hey Guys, How come WE'RE not speaking to each other? Our bonds were as tight as anyone elses. Mary Maloney from New Zealand and Rob Brownlee from South Africa, front and centre! 'Not Quite Jerusalem' was simply the catalyst that sent me where I was always supposed to go. After some crap years in the U.K. (mortgage to pay off etc), this was a breath of fresh air, and allowed me some quality time to 'get my head together', and clear out some cobwebs. I had intended to go to kibbutz for eight weeks. I left six months later. That tells a story. Having said that, I was there during more peaceful/hopeful times. I guess that the political climate has not been so favourable in recent years, but don't write it off. PLEASE, be patient. Kibbutzing really is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do in your life. If you're prepared to work alongside people from all over the world, from all walks of life, then this is for you. It's worth the effort, and you'll meet people who (yes, it's been said before) will stay with you for the rest of your life. Hell, if I can learn to put up with Martin... (In fairness, he was awful when he arrived, but left as a changed man, and all power to him. I wish him well). This, above all, is possibly the greatest gift that Kibbutzing can offer. It teaches you to take responsibility for your actions, to care for people other than yourselves, and to learn to accept other peoples beliefs, ways of life, customs,.... and, occasionally, when to keep your gob shut, and just let it slide. Other people that I'd like to be remembered to, Shane & Greig (Australia), Willy (N.Zealand), Kenny, and Mike (South Africa), John M, Johnny Q, and 'Little John'(England), Helle, Mette, Annette, and Lotte (Denmark), Andreas (Norway), Malin, and Petra (Sweden) Henke, and Gerda (Holland), Ruth (Switzerland) Justin (Wales), and, not forgetting our hosts, Inbal S, Inbal Z, Adi, Ifat, Marcella, Batya, Orly, Haddas, Avital, Ilana, Itzik, Yorram, Nimrod, Chaim, and David (K'far Giladi). All of these people (amongst many others too numerous to mention were great company), and if I can remeber them after all these years, it must count for something. Best wishes to you all, and if this has encouraged anyone to think seriously about taking the plunge, all I can offer is that there are those who say...and those that do... Oh, and the view is something else ! |

| Comments: | I was at T'zora from January through May of 1984. As a native of Wisconsin, I insisted that I should work in the dairy, and they were happy to put me there. I woke up many mornings at 3:45 am to help milk the herd of roughly 400 dairy cows. Milking was followed by other chores. Roughly 50 volunteers passed through T'zora in my tenure there, nearly half from either New Zealand or South Africa.
In addition to volunteers, T'zora had a contingent of approximately 20 American college students from NIFTY (National Federation of Temple Youth), who were called "the reformim" by the kibbutzniks. The volunteers tended to look on the reformim with a mixture of envy and contempt. Most of the volunteers were in their 20s, and were there to drink and have fun, while the reformim were serious college students with classes as well as kibbutz jobs. They had better housing, which was actually paid for by the Reform Movement. Last year (2003) I returned to T'zora as a visitor, and stayed in the bed and breakfast. My private room overlooked the tiny room in a prefabricated unit that I once shared with Thor, a crazy but lovable Norwegian teenager. Although nobody at T'zora remembered me directly after 20 years, one of my mishpakah (A Yiddish word that describes a person in your extended family) had lived at T'zora before me in the 1970s, and had kept in touch with her childhood friend there. My cousin Fran was able to help me get back in touch with T'zora. During my 2003 trip to Israel, I also participated in the Isreal Ride (www.israelride.org) to raise money for the Arava Institute at Kibbutz Ketura. Over the years, I have known or met at least a dozen people who have lived at T'zora as volunteers or reformim, either before me or after me. Several Oberlin College classmates and friends have turned out to be former reformim. Sadly, I don't know if it is possible to have the kind of experience today that it was in the 1980s. Most of the Kibbutzim are less communal and socialistic than they once were. They have had to make many economic compromises. But then, so have I! I am happy to hear from anyone I may have crossed paths with in Israel. |

| Comments: | Me and Kev arrived at Hatzor in March 82....Took a while to get used to the quiet:) life...after being used to drinking ourselves to death in London...But after a few weeks settled down quite nicely....Remeber Pat Murphy from Grays....who liked a drink himself....had the pleasure of sharing a room with him....listening to Chas and Dave as we peacefully went to sleep..! Richard from Welwyn...a teacher..where are you now mate ?...Urs and Jesse from Switzerland....Axel...the mad Dane....Juan from Yorkshire...
Franco from Chile and his German girlfriend....Mette Terp Neilsen from Denmark....who's company I enjoyed...Kevin and Cindy from Toronto who we met up with once again mid 80s in London..Great games of football between volunteers and some mostly Argentinian Jewish students....all happening during the Falklands "War"..made for some interesting tackles.... Overall a wonderful experience...to be recommended to any young traveller...just dont get on the buses... |

Yup, Lydia, Halvah, 4:30AM to set up the dishwasher, meditating in the forest, feeling so alone and so connected, feeling the magic of g-d, the power, the sun, the hope, a time when life had no beginning or end, green dinner tables, Tama salt shakers, chicken necks, wild cats, bats!, pianos, Kitah Alef, weeding the cotton fields, a teul or two, cassette tapes of Cat Stevens, "how's it?" said by the South Africans, bad beer, a short opening of a window to show you what it meant to be alive - how to open it again? |
