Comments:This is so cool! Thanks for starting this site. My stepdad was an E9 in the Marines and was stationed here. I loved it! I have such fond memories and think often of those times and the friends I had then. So many people I know now have what they call lifelong friends (my husband has always lived in the same town). I don't have any lifer friends, but I feel blessed to have so many friends from such a variety of backgrounds over the years. My best friend back then was Nori Soriano (Phillipines)- I think of her often. Maybe she will stumble across this site sometime. I also remeber Karen and Kim and oh my - Jimmy George (my crush!) I remember walking around the base, going to the commissary or to the bowling alley and the YAC - we loved going there! In the warm weather our teachers (any one remember Miss Black, Mr Arenz or Mrs Molten?) would take us on walks down to the "Shakin' Brig" that bridge scared the living daylights out of me! Does anyone remember "the pit"? Another fond memory was the woods between the school and my house on Dennis Dr. We played alot of hide and seek in there! So many memories...some of them fuzzy - but they sure are coming back! I am bookmarking this page and will check back often!

That would be interesting if we had lived in the same farm house. My father was in the Navy and we moved from Naples to Edzell. Then we came back to the states. I hope to be able to go back and visit again one day!

Comments:My stepfather was in the USMC and was stationed at RAF Edzell from Nov. 1965 until Nov. 1967. We lived for a couple of months at the Central Hotel in Edzell, then lived in an old stone farmhouse in Colliston, which as I remember was about 20 miles away. Then after some new housing was completed we lived on-base for the last year or so. We came to Scotland from the Philippine Islands, where we had lived for 2 years, so it was a major climate change. Of all the places we lived (including Hawaii), I liked Scotland the best by far, especially the people and all the old castles etc. The base elementry school was just opened when we were there.

Comments:Wow, talk about the memories that come back! I lived in Edzell from 1983-1986, I spent (at least partially) grades K-3 at W.F. Halsey School. I lived with my father Arturo, mother Priscilla, and brother Arturo Jr. on 45 Halsey Drive. I still remember, with great fondness, Ms. Hurlburt, Ms. Senecal, Loch Wee and those swans, strawberry picking, Robert Burns Day, and haggis (and of course much more)!! Any of my former classmates would be about 28 years old now (2005), so please contact me. I moved to San Jose, CA in the 3rd grade and have always regretted not at least keeping in touch with Ms. Hurlburt (1st and 3rd grade teacher). I am now a PhD student in Entomology at the University of Ilinois at Urbana Champaign.

Comments:In autumn 1984 I was sent to Scotland by the University of Maryland-European Division (UMD-ED) to teach college speech and English courses at RAF Edzall and Holy Loch (the two major US Navy bases in Scotland at that time). Based in Edinburgh, I took trains out of there every other day to Montrose, then went on to Edzell and the Education Center. The same going the other times to Glasgow to Central Station, walking a few blocks to yet another station to take the train to the ferry across the River Clyde and eventually to Ardnadam aka Holy Loch. [I have forgotten the names of the towns on the east and west banks of Clydebank that were connected by the ferry.]
That November one of my students invited me to Thanksgiving dinner with her family at her naval base housing at Edzell. It was an interesting experience to celebrate the all-American holiday in the Edzell "island" surrounded by the Scottish "sea". People in Edinburgh wished me "Happy Thanksgiving" all the same.
I went on to teach UMD-ED courses in Germany for Army and Air Force personnel until 1986. However, my 8-week time in Scotland I will always have special feelings for.
The declining exchange rate of the American $$ chased me back to North America.
