Memories :One very fond memory for me was being a student at Halsey in either 5th or 6th grade and Mrs Bright was our teacher. We did an "exchange student" type thing with students from Banbury, England. They came and stayed with our families for one week and shortly after, we went and stayed with their families for one week. And I remember meeting an English boy named Derek Rose who had a twin brother (can't remember his name) and I cried all the way home from England on the train because I had to "leave" him. I remember the girl who I was "exchanged" with's name was Sandra but can not remember her last name. Anyone remember doing this with Mrs Bright?

Memories :I was 10 years old and we hadn't seen my Dad in a few months. We arrive at the Glasgow Air Port and went through customs. Dad got us loaded in the car he had got and we where off.. until he got lost he stopped and asked for directions.. He found a chimney sweep on the street.. He gave great directions we just couldn't understand... HIM!!
We made it into St. Cyrus a small fishing village on the North Sea in North East Scotland between Dundee and Aberdeen ... close to Montrose I am not sure how far Edzell was but it was inland to the West. We stayed at the St. Cyrus Hotel for a few weeks then moved to a cottage in town. The Hotel owners had 2 daughters one was my age and she was the first child I met. We where friends she was very quite and didn't talk much, Lori was her name. I was ill all night and couldn't sleep. I was so worried as we had been told they Spoke English and didn't need to learn any language and tomorrow morning I would be going to school and couldn't understand much of what was going to be said! I was never so nervous or scared again! We went to the school a large stone building with steps. Next to a Church with a gate around it. You entered where coats and boots where kept and some sinks for washing up where there also, it was chilly. The office was straight ahead, they took us to our rooms. I had Mrs. Dioxin she had 3 grades 3, 4, 5 I was in 5th grade so went to the area that was set up with the windows behind our desks. My sister went to a different part of the school in the back. Later I was shown where the toilet's where out side.. the sinks to wash up was in the entrance hall and then where the lunch room was. I always enjoyed the food. In 1967 there was a scare with TB and the Yank kids couldn't drink the milk. We received many comments from the other kids about this... There where other American's there. Denise Farmer was a grade below me she had older sisters that went to different schools and Kathy Wolf a grade above me had 2 younger brothers and an older sister that went to a different school. They didn't sound like Americans but told me they where. I met other children, as well. I thought they where all so fun and friendly. Many days they would gather around me in a circle with me in the middle and sing Yankee Doodle.. I found out later it was not in friendship as I thought but they where trying to be mean to me .. I laughed and joined in and they decided to like me as they couldn't offend me as much as they tried! I was later told. We played Cricket and that was a big deal! The boy's hated to loose.
One of my favorite time was sewing and knitting.. We could sit and talk quietly and do our work. I joined Girl Guilds and also Girl Scouts at the Base. I took Scottish Highland dancing in Montrose with my sister Kim. We took the bus most of the time. Our youngest sister was born in Montrose. We moved on base and I went to the Halsey school there was a husband and wife team and he had the older kids and she had the younger children. My sister went to school in Laurencekirk until she was in the grade they had at Halsey and went there just before we moved back to the states.
We went to the Chapel on base and went to vacation Bible School each year. I remember the Kids bingo and the Rod and Gun Club I ran the clay pigeon machine during the shoots.. I also got a job as an assistant teaching Dance with a lady that started classes on base.
I have always looked forward to going back to Bonnie Scotland someday.. but have not made it yet! In the mean time I teach my grand daugter Scotish dance steps!

Memories :My Dad, Carl, was assigned to Edzell from 1972-1974. (Mum - Winnie) We lived in a very old, damp farmhouse 3 miles outside of Drumlithie (6 miles from Stonehaven and 30 miles from base.) Our phone # was 634 - I always got a kick out of that. My sister, Brenda and I, attended London Central HS in High Wycombe, England, but loved our time spent at home in the country. My siblings, Eric, Martha, and Karen attended school on base and some of your friends may have known them. Some our my friends on base included; the Martins, Dershams, Williamsons, and Myers. In 1993, I took my husband to Scotland. It was great to see the beautiful and quaint fishing village of Stonehaven had changed little, but our former home was crumbling (I cried)and of course Edzell has suffered from the absence of the base population. I feel very connected to Scotland despite the short amount of tie I spent there. I am drawn to its rugged coastline, misty hills, and warm natives. My great grandfather emigrated to Nova Scotia many years ago; I am of the Wilson Clan. I will return. Faith

Didn't really get along with anyone else and only went to Mearns for 1 year then went to Hy-Wycombe. Remember... I was the fat geeky kid who always caught hell from most kids. You and Carl were 2 of the very few people who didn't treat me like s**t. Still, did enjoy Scotland though, just such a beautiful place. I do have fond memories of irritating Linda Faurqeson (Farqy) though.. ;-}

I see a whole bunch of you in my head but the names escape me.
I grew up in Laurencekirk and yes, We did think you were rich it was the clothes such bright colours and you all had jewlery of some sort even some of the guys, remember we were just a little farming community. I was home last year (15yrs away) took my husband was surprised at how built up things are It feels as if you leave L'kirk and 5mins later you're in Stonehaven and 10 mins after that you're in Aberdeen

Memories :Thank You Christa for such a beautiful website. I was there in Edzell from 71-74 with my Dad and Mom (Bob & Mary Stauffer) and attended WF Halsey as well. I have a few memories that have stayed with me all of my life since then, and remember some of the folks that I met while my Dad was stationed there.....Bobby Fisher, Celia (Harris) Allgood, Jeff Harris, Jenny Harris, The Fellows, just to mention a few. Boy do I remember leaving the base to go into Edzell, just beyond the Arch to a little shop where you could get those "Fish -n- Chips" rolled up in old newspaper; playing baseball for the "Jolly Green Giants", Loch Wee. My Dad retired a CWO3 in 1975 after 21 years with the Navy and we moved back to my Mom's hometown of Littlestown, PA. and have been here ever since. My Mom passed away in October of 2003 due to cancer. Anyone with information on a Robert Moylan who has a son named "King" who I went to school with at Halsey, please email me of thier whereabouts. Thanks again so much for the memories and the website!

Memories :What fun to find your website. I was going through my files and found an old article from Edzell. My family was at RAF Edzell fro 1972-1976. My father was the dentist there. I went to Brechin High School, and was the first American there. It is wonderful to see that others went to Scottish schools also. Both my brothers, Wally and Paul went to Laurencekirk. I remember when we first moved theree it was June and our family rule had been that we had to come in when the street lights came on. Mom and Dad didn't bargin for when the street lights came on in Scotland. That rule soon changed. I really liked jumping on the trampoline with Mr. Magic coaching. I had forgotten about the YAC until I read it in another email. Thanks for doing this page. Please keep in contact.

Memories :My father was stationed at Edzell from 1967 to 1969. Although I spent most of my time away from the base in high school at Lakenheath, I remember walking to Edzell village from the base when I was home on vacation and during the summer. Part of the path was a rough farm road and filled with potholes. The bridge over the river was especially picturesque; sometimes my sister and I lingered by the river and explored. We used to only buy a candy bar or something in the village before making the trip home. One summer, when I volunteered at the vacation bible school, I took some of the older kids on a hike to the river.

Although the base theater opened during the time I was in Scotland, the officers club also showed movies occasionally. I remember seeing The Magus and Gone With the Wind at the officers club. One Christmas break I worked washing glasses during the officers club Christmas party. It was tough work bending over a little sink behind the bar.

During that time, I was closest to people like Carolyn Thomas and Charlie Wier and Nancy Fallon, my sister's friend.

Memories :We arrived in 1969 with two small boys, Matt and Tim. Lived in a cottage, Whitefield of Dun, for a few months and moved into MEMQ 35 around Christmas time. No snow during our stay. We enjoyed the work, the travel, picnics up at Loch Lee, trains to Aberdeen, the golf challenge, the community of a small base and town, the friendship of the local people.

Story One. I needed car insurance so I went to the banker. He said come in to my office and chat. We talked awhile until he formed an impression of me and then said OK, I will insure you.

Story Two. My wife was with child and needed support hose for her legs. I thought they would cost maybe $5. I walked up to the counter and they were $12. I didn't have $12 with me but he said, that's OK. I said I would pay him back and started to give him my name and address. He stopped me and said, no need. I know you will be back.

Story Three. In the wood hobby shop, the manager was a retired RAF pilot knighted by the Queen. I was refinishing a grandfather clock which we still have today. He came over and said, easy with the sandpaper, don't take the ridges off the finials, that clock is about 200 years old.

Last story. We hollowed and carved a big rutabega for a pumpkin at Halloween. We hauled a spruce tree with our Beetle, tying one end to the back bumper and the other to the front. We cut off both ends and squeezed it into RAF housing. It took up most of the living room.

One more. I went to an auction. I bid on a wooden chair--I thought. 2 shillings. Sold. It turned out I was bidding on 4 chairs and I had come with a Beetle.

Thank you for the pictures. We have lots of slides of the countryside, Edinburgh, base, etc. We left in 1972 for a Comsec tour in Va, then Guam for 5 yrs, then Okinawa.

I remember some of the names that i saw on the guestbook. Gene Kissner, Lee Yarger, Mike and Denise Osmond. Edzell was my favorite station by far that my dad went to. I think this site is just great. I think about Edzell often and now i have a place i can go to and remember. I would love to hear from anyone who was there at that time.

Memories :I lived in Edzell from 1969-1974. I stumbled on this site when looking for pictures. I remember very little of my time there but looking at the pictures, especially those with names under them helped my memory somewhat. Especially Celia's and Carolyn McIntires. I was friends with Robin Peters and the other McIntyre's. I am still in touch with the McIntyre girls: Susie, Lori, Jackie and Pammy. I live in Rochester, New York. I'm married with a seven year old son and I work for IBM.

Memories :Well I have lots of great memories, but most of these are recent. in fact I live there now. I do have one memory of RAF Edzell, which was the only time I ever visited, it must have been about 1993/4 and my children brought their ponies up to take part in a 4th July parade, my children often talk about what a great day they had. The next time we seen the base was when we came to buy a house (104 Dewey court), seven years later. I moved my teenage children kicking and screaming to what is now Edzell Woods, they hated the remoteness, leaving their friends etc I have to laugh because five short years later my daughter has now married and they have now bought a house here (12 Halsey Drive). My son insists that he never wants to live anywhere else. We have no cinema, shops,or pubs now (although The Ships Inn may be opening soon). only 144 houses(roughly) but we are trying to build civilian community. We still have the shakky bridge and a nice walk to Edzell. Sorry for intruding on your memories page but I just wanted to say Hi, and tell you how much I have enjoyed reading your memories.
P.S. Id love to hear from anyone who lived in my house, you may remember it was the one that went on fire in 1995/6

I still have dreams about Scotland. It is my hope to go in a few years after my 2 sons complete college. I had an apartment in Brechin, even though we were not allowed. I just stayed there on weekends. 14 pounds a week. I loved walking across the swing bridge into edzell. I loved taking the train to Perth, Arbroth, Montrose, Aberdeen, and Edinburg. I loved the "furry" cows.

Memories :I GOT ORDERS TO NSA EDZELL WHILE ON A HOSPITAL SHIP IN VIETNAM IN 1967 AS AN SH2. I WAS TOLD THAT I WAS THE LAST AMERICAN SAILOR TO ARRIVE AT "BRIDGE OF DUN" LATE ONE NIGHT AND HAD TO USE THE ONLY TELEPHONE AROUND FOR MILES (AND DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO USE IT) TO CALL THE BASE AND GET THE DUTY DRIVER TO COME AND GET ME. IT HAD BEEN A VERY INTERESTING TRIP. I WAS BY MYSELF AS I HAD JUST GOTTEN MARRIED AND DIDN'T HAVE PERMISSION TO BRING MY WIFE OVER WITH ME. THAT TOOK ABOUT 3 MONTHS BEFORE SHE ARRIVED IN PRESTWICK, SCOTLAND. I WORKED AT THE COMMISSARY STORE WHERE WE HAD AN E-9, 2 E-6'S, 4 E-5'S THAT DID EVERYTHING THERE. I MAINTAINED CONTACT WITH MOST OF THEM AFTER LEAVING THERE. I VISITED WITH JIM SHULER AND HIS WIFE SUE IN ARKANSAS A FEW YEARS LATER WITH OUR FIRST ADOPTED DAUGHTER, KIM. I WAS STATIONED IN THE NORFOLK, VA AREA WITH BILL HODGES, PAUL CASADY AND JOHNSON. WE ALL MADE CHIEF ABOUT THE SAME TIME. PAUL AND BILL RETIRED, JOHNSON AND I MADE E-9 AND LAST I HEARD HE WAS THE COMMAND MASTER CHIEF OF THE USS EISENHOWER. I RETIRED FROM FOSSAC IN NORFOLK AS COMMAND MASTER CHIEF. WE WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK TO SCOTLAND SOME DAY. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE BEEN STATIONED IN AUSTRALIA, I THINK SCOTLAND IS BY FAR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY I HAVE BEEN IN. WE WOULD DRIVE WITH OUR FRIEND MARION SMITH (FROM GEORGIA) ALL OVER SCOTLAND ON THE WEEKENDS. WE VISITED DESERTED CASTLES, LITTLE TOWNS OF ONLY A FEW PEOPLE, BIG TOWNS LIKE ABERDEEN AND PERTH. WE RODE OUT INTO THE FARMLANDS AND WATCHED FARMERS LOADING THEIR CARTS WITH THE BIGGEST TURNIPS WE HAVE EVER SEEN. WE SAW ENOUGH SHEEP TO CLOTHE THE WORLD FROM NOW ON. WE RODE UP CAIRN O'MOUNT WHEN SNOW WAS OVER THE TOP OF THE CAR. WE WENT TO THE NORTHERN MOST TIP OF SCOTLAND, VISITED THE LITTLE BASE AT THURSO AND SPENT TIME WITH THE LOCK NESS MONSTER. WE'VE BEEN TO THE QUEEN'S CASTLE IN BALMORAL.

Memories :What a crazy site to come across! Although my parent were not in the armed services, I attended W.F. Halsey Elementary School from '86-'89. I was the only child from a civilian family, but I really wanted to attend an American school. I lived in St. Vigeans (on the outskirts of Arbroath) and every morning I was driven to Brechin, where a bus would take me and the other children to school. My memories are hazy, but fond. I still remember a school trip to Ayrshire, which focused on Robert Burns. I miss Scotland and the Scots so much. I cannot wait to go back and visit all the places I had been when I was a child.

Memories :Just looking at this site makes all the memories come flooding back and what memories they are.I served with the Royal Navy unit at Edzell between 1989 and 1991 and can honestly say that they were two of the best years of my life. The beautiful countryside, the friendly people and the wild nights partying which sometimes resulted in me not getting to sleep till 4am when I had to be at work at 6.30am!On more than one occasion I made the long walk back from Edzell village to the base (after over indulging in the local tipple) taxis were a rare commodity!I always remember the food being far better than what we had been used to in the Royal Navy as well as the accommodation and the married quarters in Brechin where I used to live on Trinity Fields Crescent.I have often said to people that if I had been offered the opportunity to work at Edzell for the rest of my Naval service then I would have taken it with open arms.Fond memories that I still share with people to this day.

Memories :My family was stationed in Edzell from 72-75. While I went to Halsey for the 8th grade, my older sister Debi was in 10th grade at Hi-Wycombe down in London. Since Halsey only went up to the 8th grade - the next year I had to go to Hi-Wycombe too. I don't remember why we didn't go to the local school in Laurencekirk...but Debi and I did not make it through that year at the boarding school. She got sent home and a few weeks later my Dad drove down to get me too. Then we went to Laurencekirk. I remember the boys and girls cloak rooms - the Scottish girls thought the Americans were filthy rich (HA!) and while we made friends with many of them, there was a small group that always looked for ways to get us in trouble with the Headmaster.
I remember the swinging bridge over Glen Esk. We would all troop down there for camp-outs and fireside parties (I have pictures of one!)
SuzAnn Hillan and I were best friends - our b-days were on opposite ends of July and we had a joint b-day party in mid-July 1974. I still have the b-day cards that I got - so let me know if any of these people are famous yet cause I have their autograph...Rob Schlapfer, Teresa Andros and Jeff Harris, Robin Leach, Kim Andros, Cindy Gates, Beep Martin, Karen Leach and one I can't make out but I remember he was the guy that was very religious and looking out for our salvation.
I have a picture somewhere of Jeff and John on our shed - we lived in the duplex next door to the Harris's and the sheds were easily accessible for midnight getaways and sneak visits. (My dad put nails in the window slides to keep us in and boys out). What funny days those were!
Michael Jackson with a 'fro and Donny Osmond were on the Top of the Charts.
I worked in the Snack Bar as a short-order chef making burgers, fries, grilled cheese sandwiches and Chef Salads.
Happy crazy days....

Memories :I was in Scotland and went to Halsey for 2 years and then went to American School of Aberdeen. I miss everyone that I knew in Scotland. My family was everyone I ever knew in Scotland. I used to have a super mondo crush on Bill Renshaw. My friends Jennifer and Leslie used to do lipsyncing contests to Poison songs. When we went to Halsey we went on a trip with real clansmen on a Bonnie Prince Charlie trip to the Isle of Skye. We also had an overnight at a bed and breakfast at Stratford upon Avon for a Shakespear trip. At ASA now ISA I used to have a teacher named Mr. Scripto who scared me into being a good student in his class. I was involved with field hockey at WF Halsey. One of the years I was there everyone in the school got a picture of the school and it looked like a rainbow was landing right on it. I have tons of pictures, I'll have to put them up on this site. This is and awesome site.

Memories :I was stationed at Edzell from late 1966 to mid 1969. Had a chance to live on base but chose to remain off. Stayed in a Gamekeepers Cottage at Ardoch of Gallery. Wife Betty and I had a son born at the maturnity hospital near Montrose. Midwife, no doctor. Baptized in the Scottish church in Logie Pert. A Scot has a web page all about Edzell also, Found couple years ago but lost it. This page is excellent also.

Memories :It is really amazing how the impact of Edzell is very similar to most brats. When we first got on base we moved into the trailers for a short time. They were a terrifying place to be during a strong storm (the walls moved). I was there from 79-82 (6th grade - 2nd year). The freedom we had over there was incredible. Never would I let my 7th grader walk the distance that we did to Edzell. My first job was delivering PODs. Was never old enough to officially bag groceries but did fill in for lunches, or when a new album was discovered at the Exchange. You had to get there quick or it was gone. I know of many kids who hid them in the uniform drawers until they got their "cut" of the bagging money. Like, Celia, I remember sunbathing on top of our sheds and being chased by the swans. We still talk about the day/night thing. I do remember handing out at the park until the wee hours because no one realized how late it actually was. When it did get dark and we were at the park we had to hide from the "MOD SQUAD" because we often made too much noise. YAC will forever be in my mind. What a legacy it holds. The one thing that seems to be Edzell specific is that everyone hung out together. There was a really wide range of ages together, but no one really minded. I met some great people there, local and American and have kept in touch with a handful of them. As a matter of fact, I have remained very good friends with a "Marine Brat" I met there, Sharyn Tadych, we even live in the same town.

Something to think about: Yac, snack bar, multipurpose room, squash courts, racquetball, the gym, package store, tennis courts, Blue Stratos discos, shopping trips to Dundee, Shakin' Brig, Loch wee, "The Park", first babysitting jobs, school uniforms, shortage of american albums, having people send Bubble Yum from London or the States, bagging groceries, summer hire, freedom as teenagers......just a thought, maybe bring a smile.

Thanks for the site Christa.

Memories :When I think of Edzell I instantly feel all the emotional highs and lows of being a teenager. We lived there from '71 to '74, I was 14 when we got there and 17 when we left.
The day we arrived there and moved into the Grand Arms
Hotel, we were led to our rooms by a chatty woman and we couldn't understand a word she said. I looked at my mother and said " I thought they spoke English here". After just a little while the deep brogues became perfectly clear to us though. We moved from the hotel to a caretakers cottage in St. Cyrus with a castle right next door. We lived there for a few months till housing became available on base. When we
first got there all the teenagers except one boy were going to school in Hy Wycombe, but my parents wouldn't think of us going to boarding school, so I went to school first in Laurencekirk and then to Brechin. After that less kids were sent off and by the time we left none were.I remember walking to the bus stop in pitch darkness in the mornings and coming home to the same in the winter time. In the summer we would camp out and it would be daylight till about midnight and then the sun would be out again at 3 am.Also in the summer when the temperature would rise up into the 70's all us Americans would lay out in our bathing suits trying to get a tan, while our Scottish Friends stared at us. One memory I have is my brother and I being chased for several terrifying minutes by the swan at Loch Wee. I worked at the commissary on weekends bagging groceries for tips, and made pretty good money. I met some wonderful people while we were there and would love to go back as an adult to see the place again.
