my heroic efforts at being a lumberjack landed me in youghal cottage hospital for 6 weeks,it was there that I happened to take paedar o donnells book by sheer chance from a small hospital library of some 200 or so books. It left its mark.The book and the chainsaw,(20 stithches above the knee,not the end of the world)I am currently living in a yurt in spain and I wish to make a plaque for it. in spanish it will read 'los caidos de la columna connolly'(the cc fallen) followed by the names/ age/ place of birth and where fell. Also on the plaque i'll put the tri colour crossed with the flag of the spanish republic. I reckon ,that'in a yurt in the spanish mountains in these times of austerity it'd be the dogs bollocks.I'm currently researching so as to make the list accurate. I'm new to computers and signing your guest book is for me up there with joining the beano, Best wishes to all. |

As someone who has had a copy of Connolly Column for many years, the one printed in the DDR, it is wonderful to find the site. I am sending off my membership form to the International Brigade Memorial Trust today and am looking forward to the Belfast event in October. Those Irishmen who served, in spite of great personsl sacrafice and hardship, in The International Brigades were among the really decent men and true heroes that this country produced in the 20th Century. Their memory must be preserved particularly in a world that is now obsessed with selfish materialism. |

Shouts From The Wall commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, honouring in particular those from these shores as Irish volunteers in the International Brigade defending the Spanish Republic from the forces of fasicism With stark images of fists and faces with mouths crying, guns held high, these stunning images spoke of the dangers of the fascist terror and the importance of resistance. There will be live performances in song poetry and readings, from Pól Mac Adaim, Pól Brady, Victoria Gleason, Gerry McLaughlin, Ciaran O'Brolchain, and Mark Anthony. In the Roll of Honour, you have my great-uncle, Ben Murray listed - you seem to have picked up an error made somewhere along the line that he may have been called "Basil Andrew" - he wasn't! His full name was Benjamin Frederick Murray. I have discussed this with Ciaran Crossey, who agrees that he's not sure where this originated from - and now agrees with me that any reference to "Basil Andrew" can be dropped.
