Are you really think this is a good website? I don't think so as the news are very outdated and it does not appear that there is anyone maintains it... Anyway, why are you intereted in Town Planning? To be honest, I think Town Planning in Hong Kong is very bad as town planners in Hong Kong simply do not have too much power in the process and the developers have final say. Otherwise, we would not have the extremely high-rise building near Victoria Harbour and the extremely high density housing in Junk Bay. Anyway, I am also a Town Planner (thou not in Hong Kong) and like to make friends with planning students in Hong Kong...it is nice to meet you. |

Thank you for your questions. I can't answer your questions about job searching. If you want to discuss urban planning, then I must join it. I am now conducting a research on impacts of urban renewal. somebody may know me. I am just a small potato. I am not interested in "planning" working in HK government. In the past, a lot of people including officials resists pedestrianization. now it becomes popular in some areas such as Mong Kok, Causeway.... In my vulgar opinion, a lot of "innovative" planning ideas do not materialize because of power and conflict of interest. I find many guests here express interests in Town Planning and wants to even know the job opportunities in this area. Actually, for those interested in Town Planning in Hong Kong, you can try to visit website of Hong Kong Institute of Planners at www.hkip.org.hk. This is a professional body of the rare town planners in Hong Kong. However, for those planning graduates look for jobs, I don't think this institute has helped much, as they don't have any advertisement for job vacancy at all. However, they do have a directory containing a list of private planning consultants (actually there are only 15 compaines !~), so graduates may like to send letters to these companies for luck. Generally, I think town planners are not recognised as a profession and some people even don't know there is such a career (compared with the well known professions such as Engineers or Accountants), this makes me very disappointed. To the worst, sometimes, media even ask other professions (such as architects) for interview on matters related to town planning but not planners !! I think very upset about this!! Yes, architects may know more on building and urban design, but I don't think they can speak for us on town planning issues ! I think, we, as a planner, should keep enhancing our knowledges in different aspects of planning to further strengthen the base of our profession and let people know that town planner is a profession on its own merit !! |

I found there a master course MSc in Urban Planning offered by University of Hong Kong(HKU) fits my interest. I may plan to study the course full-time. I don't think I have a full list of planning consultants. i have browsed HKIP's website. Certaintly his list includes the most famous planning companies in Hong Kong. If you can't find any summer jobs in those "big" companies, then you have to try other architectural firms who may have small planning teams or branch. Why don't you stay in Australia and look for some jobs? Hong Kong is now under economic depression. though property market is stablised, but still not in a good shape, a lot of private developers or property agency look to the China market. Since this, property development in Hong Kong is certainly slowing down and thus commissioned projects for those planning firms are slashed. other than R/C property development, the trend of planning in Hong Kong more focuses on making a green city, stimulating cultual industry for economic reasons. I hope what the principal offiers said recently is not a big talk. In taiwan, as i know the development of cultural industry is based on community development and planning. But in Hong Kong, its initiation is from the government which often fail to provide any incentive for people to intitiate community/cultural works. As the government always says, we have to look positively. Now we do. but the result does not depend on what the govenment, but whehter she can encourage people such as residents, small business ownership, social workers, planners to do in a certain way.
