Very little rust, but could use a paint job, as there are rust spots where the paint has failed. It runs but needs to be driven to get it tweaked just right. The fuel injection is really cool, one of the first electronic systems made by Bosch. Right now it has the carpet and seats out to check the floor pan (where these babies rust). (Thursday, September 26th 2002 - 09:47:31 AM) Early morning on the way to work just thinking how well the cars been going over the last few years I've had it. All of a sudden the car cuts out, no warnings, no loud bangs, it was almost as if the HT lead had come off the distributer etc. I managed to free wheel into a near layby and pop up the bonnet for initial inspection of anything obvious. Not being able to find anything I tried to start the car only to hear the starter motor spinning round as if not engaged onto anything. Unable to ascertain a fault I decided to call out the 4th emergency service, yes you've guessd it; old AA man faithful! It just so happened that Mr AA man turned out to be an old chum from school, so we had a quick chat, me thinking great i'll be back on the road soon without much fuss (always the optimist) was I terribly mistaken. The start of the nightmare was onlt just about to begin! After telling Rhys (my mate Mr AA man) what happend his mood instantly changed for the worst, those dreaded words for which I was about to be tormented for over the next 6 weeks where about to be spoken. "It sounds very much like your timimg belt" Rhys said, I could see a cringe in his face, as he removed the plastic cowling his suspiscions where confirmed. I then got Rhys to tow me to my local garage that i'd used over the last 10 years with not too many problems. I asked Martin (garage mechanic)to carry out initial technical assessment of the damage, me thinking a few hundred quid for new valves etc. the following week I was flying out to greece for two weeks, and between the Thursday of breaking down and the following Thursday i'd spoken to a mate who'd experienced exactly the same thing in his 19 16v. He told me it had cost him £1200 to put right, I thought FUCK! things where starting to worry me now. Anyway, I told Martin this, and asked him to give me a price for the repairs on my engine against fitting another engine. I was now into the second week of my holiday, and my dad phoned me to tell me what was happening. To fix the engine ( new valves, belt,labour etc) about £900, for a new recon engine (the only engine he was prepared to fit) with 12-18months warranty £2600. My initial thoughts where "how much!" I'd already got a quote for an engine from a breakers of £275 + vat prior to going on holiday (no warranty on the engine of course). The trouble was that I was in greece and my dad needed to make a descission. I was extremely reluctant for the work to go ahead, but my dad didn't need the hastle of getting the car towed away from the garage then stored, and we both thought at least the car will be sorted when I get back off holiday and that the work will be guaranteed. Got back off holiday (now 3 weeks form breaking down) no work had started on my car! last week Martin carried out the repairs and took the car for a test drive. There was something terribly not right with it, high oil pressure,no power, loud knocking above 3000rpm. Initial thoughs where damaged piston/big end etc bare in mind the cost of this work was already work £900. A week later Martin dropped the sump to inspect for damage and found a damaged crank shaft/shells etc. He phoned me up with the bad news and told me that someone had had the sump off previously and sealed it back up with a silicon sealant (the stuff you'd seal your shower with!) this had perished and fallen into the oil sump and blocked the oil pick up pipe, thus starving oil to the engine. This may have contributed to the timing belt failure due to engine strain etc. Martin has suggested that I now look for another engine as the work/labour involved in repairing my engine will probably run high, and that due to oil starvation the engine may be damaged elsewhere. I am now looking for a second hand phase 2 F7P 93' engine with some warranty, which is what I wanted to do right from the start, but the mechanic was initially only prepared to install a reconditioned engine with 12 months warranty. I've had a quote for a second hand engine with 3 months warranty, and martins quoted me about £120 to fit it. It looks like the cost of the work will now come to the approx value of the car @>£1600. All this for a fucking timing belt @£50. Surely a crap design! I need to purchase another F7P engine, are there various types? my cars a 93' phase 2 hatchbach.
