| Comments: | The Meaning of the Surname ‘Mac Cormaic’
(Anglicised McCormick, McCormack, Cormack, Cornick, Carmack & Cammack) The Irish surname Mac Cormaic is the longest established surname in Ireland. It stretches back to the start of the 1st century AD when the four sons of Cú Chorb mac Moga Chorbb adopted ‘Cormaic’ (the sons of Chorb) as their tribal clan name. As a personal name, ‘Corb’ along with ‘Cormac’ has been in use in Ireland since before 2,000 BC. Records show a Fomorian king with the first name Corb fighting at the 2nd Battle of Mág Tuiread, and likewise on the continent a Celtic God Corb was worshipped on the Iberian Peninsula sometime prior to 500 BC. There are several suggestions to what the personal name Cormac might mean, ranging from Charioteer, Raven, Righteous, Incestuous and the Chosen One; and it was regarded as the equivalent of the word ‘Christ’, as seen in the personal name ‘Cormac mac Airt’ (the Chariot Son is the Son of God). In early Irish literature it was spelt Corb, with the suffix ‘Mac’ being added at a later date, to represent both a blood descendant, and also a warrior who was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. In its most basic translation Mac Cormaic means ‘the Son of the Son of the Charioteer’. In fact the legend associated with how Cú Chorb mac Moga Chorbb got his name (in the Cóir Anmann) would partially correspond to this translation. “Cú Corb from the Corb ‘basket’ of the chariot in which he lay. Or it is because he was long unbaptised that he was polluted (coirbthe). Or Corb because Cerb means ‘cut’. Or Cú Corb, that is Cúi Corb, that is, the Coirb ‘basket’ of the chariot in which he lay broke under him when he was a child, and the child began to cry (cúi) at the basket that was broken. When his father beheld the boy a-crying he himself put the basket into the chariot. From the service he (then) did to the child he is called Mog Corb, and the other Cu Chorb, that is, Cúi Chorb.” However the suggested meaning in the Cóir Anmann is meant to be taken poetically for several reasons. Firstly Cú (also spelt Con) meant Hound or Chieftain. It appears in the names of dozens of Irish warlords such as Cú Culainn, Cú Chonnacht, Cú Choingealt, Cú Doilígh and Cú Ulaidh. The translation for basket in Old Irish was Clíabh (Cléibh) which also meant a Poet of the 3rd Order, and a Successor to a ‘Church Living’ (a Saint). In the early Celtic Church this was an ecclesiastical inheritance very similar to Érenach. This is where a family would inherit both the lands and a vacant position within the Church when a Bishop died. It was normally an Abbot who was appointed as a Coarb, and examples of this are found in cases such as, the archbishop of Armagh who was the Coarb of St. Patrick, and the archbishop of Dublin who was the Coarb of St. Lawrence. Prior to the Christianization of Ireland there was a caste of Druids called the Corb, who in the legend of The Phantom’s Frenzy (Baile an Scáil) appears as one of the Filíd (poets) of Conn Cétchathach. In this legend the Corb are associated with the study of stars, and afterwards part of the ritual of the kinship of Ireland. In this particular legend the Goddess of sovereignty offers the Irish king Conn Cétchathach a chalice full of red mead, which was a custom associated with fertility. The chalice also represents baptism, and its likely that the Corbs as poets were the ones who not only baptised newly born children, but also named the child, being able to foresee their destined future. The Coarbs of the Celtic Church were an evolution of the Corbs of the Druidic Order, especially when we consider that the Irish word for Bishop Easpoc is merely an evolution of the word Easboc, an Old Irish word for Druid. The Easboc were a caste of Druids associated with lighting sacred fires. The Coarbs were noted for having the front of their heads tonsured like the Druids, even to the extent that this form of haircut was noted as Corbann. It represented the act of the moon eclipsing the sun ‘the Incest of the Sky’ (a term applied to the name Cormac, Incestuous), or more ‘lascivious’, the natural lust of nature. In Old Irish the term for eclipse of the sun is Corba Gréine or Urú Gealaí (the altar of the moon). It’s also interesting to note that a constellation in the southern hemisphere is called Corvus (in Latin), which translates as Corbán in Irish. It is the constellation of the Raven (an old explanation of the personal name Cormac) and was recorded by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in 150 AD. This was at the same time he drew a map of Ireland recording a tribe called the Coriondi ‘the Offspring of Cor[b]’ just south of their ancestral base in Kildare. Seven of the nine stars of the Corvus constellation were recorded by Ptolemy, but it is principally made up of four stars (the sun-wheel) and is associated with the element of fire. The Chinese also have early records of Corvus and call it the Chariot or the Vermilion Bird (due to its wings). The Corvus is seen to drink out of the Chalice of Sovereignty ‘Crater’ (its neighbouring constellation). The Chinese however record the chalice as being an extension of the Corvus constellation. The Irish for word for chalice is Corn or Corbna. The Celts were long noted for their study of the stars and it’s likely that Ptolemy collected the names of the constellations from the Celts who were migrating in large numbers through Greece at the time. Its quiet possible that the Irish name Corb is meant to correspond with the celestial powers the Druids would have attributed to the Corvus constellation, believing the Raven (chieftain) who drank from the Chalice was either the destined king or the guardian of kingship. The Corbs noted on the hill of Tara were specifically Druidic Poets, and it was believed that the words spoken by a poet had a profound influenced over all of society. It is possible that the Corb’s study of the stars was a determining factor in deciding who was destined to take sovereignty of Ireland. As part of the ritual of kinship the candidate had to pass through two standing stones (while driving a chariot) on the hill of Tara, name Bloc and Bluicne (the names of two druidic castes) and then over/to the Lia Fail which cried out. Was the cry (cúi) of Cú Chorb a prophecy of his future kingship of Ireland, which he later held for one year and one day, before his death at the hands of Feidhlimidh Reachtmhar (the great grandfather of Cormac mac Airt)? The chariot here and throughout Irish folklore is symbolic of the sunwheel, which is a representation of the rotation of the sun in both its daily and annual cycle. It also symbolizes the rotation of the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor around the North Pole, which when aligned to the four coordinal points is the shape of St. Bridget’s Cross. She was originally a Tuatha de Danann goddess associated with Fertility, Craft and Poetry – traits associated with the Corbs on the hill of Tara. St. Bridget had her monastery in Cill Dara, which is just five miles west of the inaugurational fortress and birth place of Cú Chorb at Dún Ailinne. It was Cú Chorb’s descendant Currach mac Cathaoir Mór Mac Cormaic who granted the lands to the Church for the monastery, although it’s most likely that the monastery of St. Bridget was build upon the site of old Druidic Order, and that the Goddess Bridget was worshipped there. Legend states that Cill Dara (Church of the Oak) is in fact named after Dáire Barrach mac Cathaoir Mór of Clann Cormaic, and originally meant the ‘Church of Dáire’, or the ‘Church of the Druids’. Bridget’s name translates as ‘the Fiery Darts’ and folklore records that St. Bridget had three fiery darts radiating above her, which is the symbol of the Druids. The three rays were accompanied by three circles, one circle each representing one of the qualities of Fertility, Craft and Poetry. It is no coincidence that one of the Mac Cormaic crests is of three circles, and secondly during the story of The Phantom’s Frenzy, the Tuatha de Danann God Lugh fired three darts (spears) at Conn Cétchathach, which is seen to represent the kingship of Ireland and the Trinity of Creation. The term Cliabh (basket) as mentioned earlier in the birth of Cú Chorb, is also the word for wicker-work or weaving, which is the process for making the St. Bridget Cross. Also Cliabhach (to weave) is the term applied to how poets intertwine earthly matter with their words, hence why poets were so powerful. Cliabh also means ‘womb’ connecting it to childbirth and fertility, and its worth noting that Cú Chorb’s great grandfather Find File was the Chief Poet of Ireland, as was Cú Chorb’s descendant in the time of St. Patrick, Dubhthach mac Lugair of Clann Cormaic (who was also a Judge and a Druid). Dubhthach was the father of seven saints, but most notably, he was the father of St. Bridget. He is also recorded as the King of Leinster. Cor (Corb) even today still means to ‘weave’, ‘plait’, or ‘twist’, while Corb-lúb being an intricate or unbreakable loop. A Cor-óg is the term for a ‘bundle of rushes’ used to make a St. Bridget’s Cross; while Corb is also used to describe the Body of Christ (Corb Chríost – the Eucharist). Corb can also mean a ‘wheel’ or any form of circular motion, linking it strongly to the Chariot and to Charioteer. Cúorb means a ‘Golden Hound’, while Corrb means ‘Engraver’. It can also translate ‘warrior’, ‘champion’, ‘hero’ or a ‘righteous’ person. In fact words like Pre-eminence, Power, Merit, Excellence, Illustrious, Noble and Distinguished are often used to explain the name Cormac (a king supreme). When written as a surname Mac Cormaic is also very unique in comparison to all other Irish and Scottish surnames, as it is the only surname where ‘Mac’ appears twice in the name. ‘Mac’ can mean a ‘son’, ‘boy’, ‘child’, ‘descendant’, ‘follower’, ‘devotee’, ‘warrior’ or a ‘man’; while in compounds ‘-mac’ can mean ‘young’, ‘boyish’ or ‘offspring’. It is often said Macha, the Irish Goddess for War (an alternative name for Bridget) is derived from ‘Mac’, and also it is a shortening of ‘Mac Rígh’ (the sons of kings), as every Irish male is born the son of a king. It must also be noted that many Irish names had several meanings (often three) in the belief a child would inherit several distinctive qualities of the father. This would suggest that Mac Cormaic would have meant ‘Charioteer’, ‘Raven’ (Chieftain) and the ‘Righteous One’, all which were meant to be used synonymous with one another. Mac Cormaic may also have meant the ‘Chosen’ or ‘Holy One’, given its prominence associated with the hill of Tara and also a host of Irish kings throughout all the provinces. |

| Comments: | Greetings from Canada!
I'm currently researching my family tree and trying to follow a branch of my tree from the 1800s in Northern Ireland. In 1875, my second great-grandfather, Robert GIBB, married MARTHA McCORMICK (born circa 1949), at the Clifton Street United Presbyterian Church in Shankill. Martha's father was JAMES McCORMICK, a farmer. It is possible that MARTHA died while giving birth to my great-grandfather, JAMES GIBB, in 1877. Martha had a sister, MARY ANN McCORMICK (born circa 1844), and my research leads me *to believe* that she also had the following siblings: MARGARET (born circa 1846), THOMAS (born circa 1829), JAMES (born circa 1831), ROBERT (born circa 1842), REBECCA (born circa 1848). If this research is correct, then the mother to all of the above, and wife of JAMES, was FANNY (born circa 1809). I also believe that I have found the children of REBECCA: JAMES - born 1873, MARTHA - born 1875, ROBERT - born 1877, REBECCA - born 1879, MARGARET - born 1882, JAMES - born 1883, ANNIE MARY - born 1885, and MARTHA - born 1888. I am having difficulty finding any reference to these particular McCORMICKs. If anyone can help, please contact me. Thanks, David |

| Comments: | My Paternal Grandmother was a Murphy. Her father, John William Murphy married Margarett Jane McCormick in Texas in 1885. Margarett Jane McCormick was born ca. 1866 in Illinois to Hugh McCormick, b. 1834 in Ireland and Mary Jane Ferrell.
Her father, Hugh came from Ireland ca. late 1830's. Wound up in Pennsylvania by 1850. 1850 census of Bucks county Penn. lists him, age 14, living with Martin and Lydia Mull. By 1860, he is married, wife is Jane ??. They still live in Bucks county Penn. Have 3 sons: John, age 4, Hugh, age 2 and Edward, less than 1 year. Hugh McCormick, b. 1834 apparently lost 1st wife, Jane after 1860. He moved to Indiana or Illinois shortly after 1860 and Married Mary Ferrell. He brought his 3 sons from 1st marriage to Illinois with him. In 1870, they live in Lasalle?? Illinois just East of St. Louis, Missouri. Hugh, b. 1834 moved his family to Texas before 1880 (likely about 1875). But there is no indication that 3 oldest boys, John, Hugh and Edward came with him. Stayed in Illinois?? or perhaps went back to Pennsylvania?? Any info appreciated on these older sons. Odis |

The McCormick side of the family apparently came from the Terre Haute, Indiana area, probably some time after the U.S. Civil War. My familly lived in Wichita until I was 8 years old. |

| Comments: | I am trying to locate the names of my great grandparents. They had twins Lorenzo and Gregrio (Gregory) who were born around 1859 - 1862. Their death certificates show August 10 but the years do not match; one says 1859 and the other 1862. Name of father (Richard) shows on one, but mother's name is blank. The other death certificate shows Paula Herman as mother, but fathers name is blank. Lorenzo and Gregory McCormick spent most of their lives in Tucson, Az and they passed away in 1936 and 1939. Send any info that may help me track this key element in my family tree. |

| Comments: | I am looking for info on relation to James McCormick. He came to America in 1830-1834 from the Ulster Province of Ireland. He came with a Brother who I have no info on. They landed in New York and separated ways. James went to Virgina and Married Louisa Payne in Bedford County Virginia. They then moved with her mother Sarah after the death of her father James Payne. They settled in Starke County indiana and are buried there in Grovertown Cemetery. I also live in Starke County indiana and have my whole life. We think James was born abt 1815 in Ireland and his parents were born in Scotland. |

| Comments: | I am researching a Alexander McCormick (b. 1791) who immigrated with his oldest son Hugh McCormick (b.1810) to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1830. Alexander had at least four children. I know that his second son, Henry (b.1818), was born in Monaghan, Monaghan, Ireland according to his death record. His third son, William (@1819), immigrated to Australia near Porcupine Ridge. I believe he married and had five children, but cannot yet confirm this. The fourth child, Mary (@1820) also immigrated to Canada and married William McGirr there.
I'd like to find out the names of Alexander's parents. I have a list of McCormicks in the 1796 flax growers list and there is a Hugh McCormick listed in Monaghan. Please contact me if you have any more information. I descend from Hugh. His son, Robert is my great-great grandfather. He left Canada and moved to Clarkson, NY which is just west of Rochester. (M01) Alexander (b. 1791 Ireland d. 21 SEPT 1864 Ottawa, CAN) married (@1809) to Margaret Martin (b. 1792 Ireland d. 12 FEB 1832 Ottawa, CAN). They had at least four children: (M02) Hugh (b. 09 Aug 1810 Ireland d. 05 Sep 1880 Edwardsburg, Grenville, Co., CAN ) (M03) Henry (b. 1818 Monaghan, Monaghan County, Ireland d. 06 Apr 1888 CAN) (M04) William (b. UKWN d. after 1880 near Porcupine Ridge, Australia) (M01a) Mary (b. @1820 d. after 1860 ) |

| Comments: | McCORMICK Family 3C.Some updating...Mary McCormick died in 1912. My late mother, Rosemary McCorry nee Woods born on 1st April 1912, daughter of No. 5 Annie Crawford Woods nee McCormick was named "Rosemary" from Shakespeare's "Rosemary for remembrance" after Annie's much loved sister Mary.Mary's widower "Uncle Ad" of Galgorm came to visit & stay with the Woods family for many years after her death, which we were always told was directly from contracting diabetis, ie before the discovery of insulin. My mother was given the oil painting of her Aunt Mary,& this is now in my possession. Some confusion here re Elizabeth McCormick born 1868 "Aunt Lizzie" & my grandmother born 1871 "Annie McCormick" as it was she who was the governess to her cousin's"Uncle Jack"'s children, before her marriage & not Aunt Lizzie, as stated here. Aunt Lizzie was a very favourite aunt of my mothers who appreciated her McCormick relatives because they were literary & musical, as she was herslf, with perfect pitch she played & sang all her life & wrote & had articles published all her life, too. This week I have just come across my mother's 1927 diary for the 1st time & duly noted the entry that Drumbane sent a box of apples to the family for Xmas that year ! My great great grandfather and my great grandfather, the elder John and the younger Charles, left Ireland for America somewhere in the middle of the 19th C. and settled in West Bend, Iowa. I need to read the book all the way through to find more, but do you know whether my John and Charles McCormicks and their descendants are relations of your branch? Gratefully, Lin Benedek |

| Comments: | I am trying to research my mother's family. She was born in Omaha, NB on Jan 11, 1900. Her name was Eva M. McCormick. Her father was Edward McCormick and I believe her mother's name was Nellie Haley but I not certain of that last statment about her mother. My mother was the youngest and only girl. She had three older borthers, Charles McCormick, Edward McCormick and Arthur McCormick. Uncle Ed and Uncle Art along with my family lived in Muscatine, IA and Uncle Charley lived most of his life in Holland, Michigan where he was the plant manger at Heinz Co. My mother said very little about her father but did say her father worked on the railroad and was gone for a year or more at a time. My grandmother took in washing and ironing to support her family. My mother had a younger sister who died at birth or shortly thereafter and was just buried as baby McCormick. If you feel this might be part of your family or any information you have on Edward would be greatly appreciated. |

| Comments: | I have quite a lot of information on a John McCormick born in Tyrone Ireland 1825 and died in Rodman Iowa 1919.
His father was John McCormick Sr also born in Tyrone 1790 and died in Iowa. He was married to Isabella Stewart I believe also of Tyrone. I have a feeling that these 2 families hook up but I am not real sure. My great grandmothers name was Eliza Jane McCormick Crook and I saw and Eliza in this group. People usually named their children after members of their family and that seems like an unusual name to me. |

I have McCORMACK (a few spellings) family members from Mull. My family were Archibald McMILLAN and his wife Flora (need McINTYRE). They were both born in 1790s from what I can establish in Kilninian and Kilmore in Mull. They went to Australia on the New Zealander in 1853, arriving at Portland Victoria. Their son Angus had gone there before them - but trhe following children accompanied them - Ann, Christian (Christy), John and Alexander. I have lots of interesting info about their families - other than Alexander who I cannot trace. They had two other daughters - Marion (Sarah) who remained in Mull - married Meil MacLEAN and lived in Ballygown and another named Mary - who I have not been able to trace in Mull or in Australia. Archibald and Flora McMILLAN were living in Oskamull before they left for Australia. The family were cited as being 'lobstermen' in the Mull census records for 1851. However, you are probably wondering - what has this all to do with McCORMACK family. In both Archibald and Flora's death certificates - their individual mothers are described as Christina McCORMACK. I have not been able to verify, of course, as to whether this information is accurate in both or in only one case. It may be that those who reported the deaths in Australia were uncertain and got the names mixed up - or it may have been that strangely their mothers both had the same name. Flora's father is cited as being Angus McINTYRE and Archibald's as Archibald McMILLAN. Regards Libby McMillan |

| Comments: | Hey everyone. Found this page very interesting. I am a descendant James McCormick of Londonderry, Ireland he had many children of which I only know of Hugh McCormick whom was born in 1695 in Londonderry later moving to Dauphin County, Pennsylvania sometime before 1735. I know nothing of the family that stayed in Ireland or the family before James McCormick and would love to know more. If anyone needs information about the McCormick's of Dauphin County Pennsylvania let me know (email me) as I have the family tree from Hugh 2nd born 1725 on to present down to myself. |

| Comments: | Hi. just looking for possible source links i found your geneology site regarding Hastings.
I am researching Chambers.. Info i have from my Grandfathers history. He lived in Raphoe. You can see the complete family tree at http://www.incony.org looking at Chambers, you will find that there is a Rebecca and Annie Chambers.. what interested me was, they were sisters like those you list on your Hastings geneology. and the time scale is close. 3) Ross Hastings (b. 1834) (d. 5 March 1915) Ross married Annie Chambers, the sister of Rebecca Chambers, on 25 October 1877, in Ballylennon Presbyterian Church, St.Johnston, Co.Donegal, Ireland. No other details. Is there any link do you think? Regards Incony |

| Comments: | I have been tracing my family (Hamilton) and came across what was recorded as Knevland (Finland). When I went hunting for Knevland under Finland-Knevland History I was directed to Finland-Kneverland. It was under that listing that I found your web-site. Hamilton was also in Scotland and Ireland and England. I have traced my family back to 0145 but am at a loss as to where on planet earth they were. I noticed where a relative of yours was listed as a tenent of Hamilton. Could you please let me know if "Knevland-Kneverland" was once large enough to encompass Finland and parts of Great Britian? You did not mention Kneverland or Finland in your genealogy, so I am wondering why the "McCormick" web-page is under that listing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Diane Whipple |

After hitting upon the photo gallery on your web-site, which is engrossing, I am just wondering if you could dig out any old photos (older generation particularly) dating back to the 1950/1960's .. Any type of photograph would hold interest, whether impromptu, portrait/family gathering type, but especially wedding day photos. Would very much appreciate your reply, with some feedback if possible. Yours sincerely Noeleen |

| Comments: | I believe my oldest David McCormick was born in Scotland (Mull they say) in 1758 and was moved or moved to Derry, Ireland, leaving beforre 1768 for the New World.
Family lore says the ship they were on was bound for the Virginia Colony but ended up in Nova Scotia. They settled there and you can still find McCormack/icks in the River Philip/Springhill area of Cumberland Conuty. There is a land grant with his name on it from the 1820's. My grandfater Arthur Richard (1886) came Boston-side by rail through Maine and ended up in Providence, Rhode Island before 1905, marrying my grandmother in 1907, moving to Amherst, Massachusetts for a short while then to New Bedford, Mass. where I reside today. I know at least two of Arthur's brothers came to Massachusetts also. Danforth and Ord Bliss. Ord is buried in the New Bedford area as well as Arthur. Danforth was said to have been a Boston police officer but I have never had contact with that part of the family. Another, I believe, went to Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts and the last name was changed to MacCormack. Anyone see something familiar? I'm dying to talk to you. |

| Comments: | Great Site. This is my first stab at trying to trace the family my Late fathers two sisters, Hannah Mary & Annie Theresa McCormick.
From meencarragh, Ballybofey, Donegal, Ireland. They left in there teens to New York, Working for two uncles Ralph & Peter in a bar in New York. They would have emigrated around 1930-1935.There parents died young leaving a large family behind. Charles, Sammy, Michael, Agnes, Kathleen, Thomas, Margaret, Peter. Patrick. The parent’s names were Samuel McCormick & Catherine McGinley. Here's hoping that this rings a bell for someone. Best of luck for everybody trying to trace a relative. P.S.It was quite common for Members of a family to change the spelling of the name McCormick to McCormack as McCormick was, I believe descended from the landed Scottish Protestants. My grandfather was protestant and married a Catholic. Best Regards Brian (Dublin Ireland) |

| Comments: | Well...this old bugger might just as well sign too. To make a long story short(which is very hard for an Irishman)my g.g.father(James McCormack)was born in N.C. in 1800, moved to Tennessee where my grandfather, William, was born in 1824, and my dad, Albert, was born in Nebraska in 1888, and I in 1935 in Iowa. Do believe my immigrant ancestor was a William that came into Charleston S.C. about 1795 from Ireland. Now I heard that right after the potato famine that many Leprechauns chartered a ship and came to America to find their families that had moved. At least that's what one told me as we shared a moment at dawn with a bottle. Any truth to that? Dick McCormick |
