Comments: "If it is taking forever, consider pulling the hook" That is a joke why on earth would you ever try "Pulling the hook" on any fish, by pulling the hook you would be ripping through the fishes lip just because of your impatience to land it. And your instructions on holding a pole is way off...

Comments:Hey great website! I learned quite a bit about your fishing techniques. I live in the USA. I have caught hundreds of Carp in the 6 to 10 pound range and several larger in the 20 pound range. I fish lakes, the Mississippi river, and her tributaries. Most Carp are not a nuisance fish. Yes, you can eat them, I have. The only carp we have trouble with is the Chinese Carp. A Horrible fish that over produces grows too fast and there are not enough predators to keep them in check. They are taking over the Illinois river.
Your floats are a bit different than what I am accustomed to. We call them bobbers. I think your floats would work really well for some of the smaller fish we have here like Blue-Gill, Crappie, Perch or any other panfish. What you call pole fishing is what we do with a 12 ft Bamboo or cane-pole. It is how most young kids get started fishing around here. We just tie some line to the end of the cane-pole tie a hook to the other end impale the worm and catch Bluegills all day long. Sometimes we use bobbers but they are round golfball sized plastic things not at all like your more graceful and accurate floats. I should like to get some of those floats. I would bet they could make a very welcome addition to my tackle-box.

I have been sent some that were included with my pole. Do you have any examples you could send??. I would love to try them. I am confused about what strength elastic to use for what size fish. I have been fishing a couple of times with my friend and tend to see approx 4lb carp and some slightly bigger. What number elastic would be best to use??. baring in mind they are alot of smaller fish approx 1 Lb that i would not want to miss either.

Enjoyed reading this. Hope to hear from you soon.

We settled in Orange NSW centre of very good trout fishing both dam and river.Using floats was almost unfair on the fish as streams were often unfished, it was a great time. Moving to Bathurst nearby I continued to use this method but under small self-cocking floats and rarly went home fishless. I have just finished building a saltwater float rod here in Hervey Bay in Queensland. The potential to catch fish this way is interesting as bottom fishing is the "norm". All the best. Bob

Much of the Aussie talk against carp is like myestery, no one can really back them up, yet not many have gone to analyse it, not to mention animal welfare for carp! We judge animal with our own self interest and bias.

I guess we might be able to organise carp cooking lessons and receipes for Australians to know about carp?

Comments:Congratulations on the great site and I hope that Course Fishing takes off in Australia as much as it has in the UK.

After reading some of the previous comments regarding Carp I had to smile. Do some Australians seriously think that Carp dig holes in river banks and destroy waterways? - what utter laughable rubbish. We've had Carp in the UK for hundreds of years (originally bred for food) and I suspect we would have noticed this destruction by now :-)

In all the waterways in the UK (& Europe) Carp live perfectly harmoniously with a vast array of other species, they are not a hugely competitive fish, they are clever and the older ones are very difficult to catch. They don't in anyway destroy vegitation, this is a ridiculous thing to say. The only exception to this is a chinese fish called a grass carp, which we do have some of in the UK. They are known to traditionally eat weeds as a part of their diet, but they are very rare and again not problematic in any way.

The only worry we have ever had about foreign fish species is with the Zander, which is very much like a pike. Predatory fish can be a problem (particularly in trout lakes) but they again eventually balance out naturally.

Good luck with the cause and I hope you can stop the senseless killing, this would be a criminal offence in the UK.

Tight lines

Chris

We have not really inspected the equipment closely as I wanted to know more about setting up a pole with an elastic and a bung but of course I have now found out that you can also use mono line. This is all very adventureous for us so we plan on studying the method and put it into practice as soon as the weather improves. Your site was very informative and easy to follow and we plan to review it again. Thank you.

I'm English and have to agree that guys Pole Fishing do seem to get results when the float doesn't, especially during our winter when the carp hardly move and become very fussy re the presentation.

I also agree that all fish should go back, the sport is catching them and it gives me pleasure to see and 'old black',(old dark coloured carp).

In England there is a move for fish preservation with most lakes only allowing barbless hooks, certain strength lines to give the fish a chance, landing mats for de-hooking and fish friendly landing nets. Keep nets are only allowed in match days.

Again a good site and I hope you have many good days fishing.

Comments:Hi, I have been experimenting with long trotting here in western North Carolina (US) for various river and stream fish...walleyes (similar to Zander), smallmouth bass and trout. My european fishing education began when I obtained a copy of "A Passion For Angling". I must say, the experience has been delightful.

I also enjoy float fishing stillwater for our various pan fish; I find european-style float fishing to be much more sensitive than the usual American style.

We are only just starting to get a few dealers here who carry the requisite supplies, mostly due to the specimen carp fishing business.

Well, there's a market for carp in S.E.A, we pay good money to eat carp esp during family gatherings. Heck, we pay good money to eat carp period! North America is having the same problem with introduced carp esp the border areas of Canada & US. They have a large (former migrant) population of asians as a market for carp and so does Australia. Catch 'em, clean and fillet 'em, freeze 'em n ship 'em! Viola! Frozen carp fillet for the asian market!

Would like to try ledgering here in MAlaysia.. once I have the time to bring out the ole' tackle box 8-)

Comments:Your comments claiming that carp have had nothing to do with aquatic weed destruction, raised turbidity and eroded banks in the Murray-Darling are neither fair nor true.

It makes me really, really sad to see this.

If you want to fish for carp in Australia (but not spread them), that's fine, but please please please be honest about their impacts.

The main evidence for carp impacts come from fishermen and riverside residents who knew lowland Murray-Darling rivers well before and after the invasion of the carp. Their evidence, from many thousands of people across the basin, is unanimous — when carp came through, aquatic weed virtually vanished, water became permanently turbid, and native fish declined. When the same story is enunciated by so many independent people, it has to accepted as fact.

One can go further with such evidence and undertake a process known as oral histories. Oral histories record people's recollections accurately and validate them with other peoples' recollections and other sources of evidence. Through this process, oral histories produce powerful evidence of environmental changes that cannot be disputed.

This has been done for the impact of carp in Australia in the Murray-Darling river system. I urge you to read the following books: Listening to the Lachlan, Fish Everywhere: An Oral History of the Gwydir River, and Conversations along the Condamine, and Heads and Tales: Recollections of a Former Fisheries and Game Officer.

These leave no argument about the devastating impacts of carp.

There are also several scientific papers you should perhaps read, including Jane Robert's study of a Goulburn River billabong, and her 1995 study of carp proving they destory several species of aquatic weed and raise water turbidity.

There are also some other scientific works on carp impacts, including a 2007 paper shower severe dietary overlaps between carp larvae and Murray cod larvae (Tonkin et al., 2007).

In summary, the facts are there. Please respect the facts and this country's poor rivers and native fish by not denying the impacts carp have had. You could also perhaps show some sympathy for the Australian fishermen who hate carp so much; it is understandable when they have seen their beloved rivers invaded by an alien fish they did not want or ask for, and who they then saw degrade their rivers and make native fish decline.

Again, if you want to fish for carp in Australia (but not spread them), that's fine, but please please please be honest about their impacts.

Regards

Simon

Comments:Hi there, just returned to fishing after 30 years absence and absolutely loving it. Pole and Feeder, like a kid in a toy shop when I go into a tackle shop. Lucky I get to keep my stuff in the Garage, out of sight so to speak. I live in Derbyshire in the UK and some great venues over here to fish but would love to try fishing in Oz.Where would you reccomend mate? By the way you missed something in you terminology section 'Skimmers' Keep up the good work. Bye for now.

Comments:hello mate! great sight, learned a lot about pole floats. Listen, you keep up the good fight. I can't believe an entire country can be so preposterously out-dated..you really can't return a carp.!!!...wow..i am a pike fisherman (by birth).. and up until 20 yrs ago the same shit was happening to them. Fish stocks and stuff..all absolute bollocks (pardon my french)..i am in the UK by the way (liverpool)...fish on my friend.. i have heard the carp are absolutely enormous over there..

Comments:Great site with a mass of information for all levels. Use a pole after converting some time ago, once you have your first fish, rods are placed to one side.

Comments:Love your site.
I live in Derbyshire in the UK and have just stsrted coarse fishing again afetr a 30 year beak.
I want my 2 boys (10 & 13) to give it go.
Get them away from the electronic crap.
On our 2nd trip my eldest 'fluked' a 2lb bream from our local pond. Great!
Thanks for the tips and good luck with the Carp.
(ALL fish have to returned at our pond AND Carp are not even allowed in Keep nets even during a match)
Cheers

Comments:Thanks for a great site, i am new to fishing , and find a lot of the technical jargon a bit bewildering at times, to have something explained in plain english is like a breath of fresh air . keep up the good work.

Comments:Thanks for the great website. I'm doing research on carp feeding habits for publicity for a potential carp fishing event in Monterey, California, US, and was glad to get your very clear & concise, yet heartfelt perspective.

Here in Pacific Grove, (right next to Pebble Beach & Carmel & Monterey) some people have the same attitude towards some of the non-native plants that originally came from Australia -- acacias & eucs in particular -- so I guess there is a need for balance between a pragmatic acceptance of what's been introduced and a zeal to keep everything like it was before the introduction of "civilization."

Thanks again,
Cheers,
Esther

Comments:Hi Sean

Thanks for an informative site - look forward to reading the rest (when it`s finished) - Interesting to read that "Down Under" that Carp are seen in such a bad light. I`ve only just started to look at catching Carp in the U.K. and albeit no "Biggies" I have had Common, Crucian and mirrors up to 5 lbs.

Tight Lines matey keep up the good work
