Even tho it's the sport of gentlemen, I just had to find out what in the world "Coarse Fishing" is...inquiring minds need to know. Your article really helped. Thanks so much for taking it down to a beginner's level, even tho I won't be beginning on this sport. A woman's work is never done...too much else to do. But a great article.

Comments:I was looking for an informative beginners guide to coarse fishing and was pleasantly surprised by yours. I have been looking for something to let a friend of mine have, who is interested in starting fishing.

I have been a coarse fisherman for over 40 years and am lucky enough to live in Norwich, Norfolk. When started we had a glut of specialist anglers arrive here for the fishing and many have stayed (John Wilson, Dave Plummer, Chris Turnbull, Martin Page, Derek Amies, John Bailey and Stephen Harper to name a few). I have been lucky enough to meet many of these when my membership of the Pike Angling Club converted to the Norfolk Anglers Consultative Association.

I have gone from a keen "all weather" angler, in my youth, to a "fair weather- short session" fisherman in my 50's. I currently live about 500 yards from the river Wensum, which flows through Norwich City centre, and so can be fishing in less than 5 minutes form my back door!

Although the river is in an urban environment and has piled banks for most of its course through the City, it does contain some very nice fish (Bream, Roach,Chub (to over 4lbs), Perch, Barbel (to over 12lb), Pike (to over 25lbs) and Carp (to over 30lb). I tend to go for the Roach, Bream and Pike, which are the easiest to catch. I rarely fish for more that 2 hours at a go and usually not at the best times but have managed to consistently catch some nice fish (which usually surprises any audience that I may have).

My only comment on your guide is that under the reels section of float fishing you do not mention centerpin reels, which I quite often use for short distance float fishing or trotting down the river, wind allowing.

Best wishes

Paul

This article goes a long way explaining the benefits of pole rigs.....something I have always shunned against......because of the lack of info on the subject. Your articles blows away the myth of pole fishing. KISS ...keep it simple stupid. Just like the pole set up.

To hear that over yonder in lovely Oz im astounded to hear carp are to blame for the death of your trees.
I have enjoyed many sessions banked up trying to catch that elusive carp which usually outwits me lol

I feel as all fish carp are a beautiful creature and it is only the ignorance of people and the usual chinese whispers which tend to end the life of these lovely fish for us to enjoy again and again and hopefully let them get fatter and more of a challenge in the coming years

Thanks for the good and generally chuckle filled read

I picked up 3 Six meter telescoping poles while in Sweden to try out with my son & nephew. Your site was a wealth of information on how to use them.

I can see this being a very nice way to fish for Bream around the canals and Australian Bass in the freshwater creeks around Brisbane.

Can't say I'm going to throw Carp back - my favorite carp recipe is Charley Carp fertiliser. Same goes for Tialpa, or any of the other declared fish.

I ALSO THOUGHT MAYBE THE 2ND NUMBER WAS THE RECOMMENDED HOOK SIZE BUT PURCHASED A FLADEN RIG HOOK SIZE 14 AND FLOAT SIZE 4 X16 IM CONFUSED TO SAY THE LEAST.

Have fun

Comments:Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that the Carp species is treated so badly in Australia. There would be an outrage here in the UK if any course fish species was treated badly. Here angling is the largest participator sport with over two million people taking part on a weekly basis in the summer months. If everyone took the fish they caught home to eat or just killed them then it wouldn't take many years before the sport would be ruined as there would be no fish left to catch. Here most water's are owned or leased by clubs and so you have to pay for a rod licence and pay to join a club or buy a day ticket each time you go fishing. By paying for fishing you appreciate what you are paying for and do not take it for granted.

I'm not sure but I'm assuming that course fishing is not a big sport in Australia or the number of people who fish is relatively small so the idea of over fishing waters leading to falls in fish populations over time is so unlikely it is not in people's mindset. If this is the case then I think what is needed is for course fishing to be elevated as a participator sport backed up with education about the environment, cruelty and fish resources. The standing of course fishing and especially the carp species should be elevated by introducing regional/national course fish records and an appropriate organisations putting up substantial prize funds each year for the heaviest fish caught and returned live and unharmed. You could do with a national celebrity to have a fishing programme on national television which would help to get the message across. It would take sometime to achieve a change in a national view but it is achievable.

Here's hoping the plight of the carp improves in Austrailia and that course fishing can significantly grow.

Nice site by the way

Good luck with it.

Regards

Mike

I suppose Australia has had huge problems with many introduced species i.e cane toads, rabbits etc that knee jerk reactions are hard to dismiss.
Anyhow I digress, I love your website and may you catch plenty.

Tight lines, Steve.

I am a keen fisherman, and I do not mind eating carp, as I do not believe that it is a "yakky " fish

it is true that the ones fished from lakes are a bit Muddy in taste, but as you have mentioned, some fresh water will solve that.
I presently live in Melbourne and do lot of fishing at Hart Morass reserve _at the back of Sale, and this river (Avon) is full of carp, and it is absolutely delicious in taste, especially mid spring (when they come out of hybernation (if I can call it so their winter period) through late autumn and due to the fact that it's a river the fish does not have that muddy taste like the lake ones.
I also do agree with your article 100 %

Although a fisherman of over 50 years myself I enjoyed reading your pages and great advice given and give a very good introduction/tutorial of the sport that'll I'll recommend to people.

Great to see your crusade against the culls the much misaligned carp of Australia - chalk and cheese situation between us as here in the UK they are almost godlike! Our 'they're destroying the world' objects being zander...

You sometimes wonder where they get the river/water authority people from - only interest they seem to have is to get the water from the source of the rivers to the mouth as fast as possible (ie make all rivers look like denuded canals) and then try to place the reason for the falls in fishing quality on some other 'mythical' reason (eg your carp). Trouble is, they say it long enough people start to believe it....

Anyway, great pages!

Best wishes and tight lines

I never knew it was like that over there.. We have our battles to keep the fish but the other way round, from poaching, and alot of Eastern Europeans catching the Carp 4 dinner..

I love to catch wild carp, not larger than 10 pounds (4.5 kg) using all manner of bait, then put them back.

My favourite method is to fish floating bait and see carp as tehy take the offering from the top.

Comments:I really liked the simplicity of this type of fishing. I am simplifying my fishing and this website is just what the doctor ordered! Last week I was inspired and went float fishing for catfish and did quite well using just a wooded bobber and worms. I am going to start pole fishing soon. Keep up the good work.

Comments:I've only been fishing the once and I caught 7 perch in a little quarry in Scotland, what a buzz. So that's me obsessed with fishing now. Your site has been very informative and I'm sure that I'll be catching many more different types of fish now.

Tight lines!!

Comments:G'day.
I began coarse fishing around the Geelong area (Victoria) from around 1995 when I met a dutch gentleman (Peter) on the banks of the mighty Barwon. Peter was sitting on a shed full and I watched him pull fish after fish. Mesmerised by his arsenal of gear. Within twelve months, I too had that arsenal of gear and enjoyed years of great fishing and frienships with The Geelong Coarse Angling Club. Here, I learnt the "skills of the trade" from some very experienced coarse anglers. Sadly I sold all of my gear a couple of years ago due to lack of use ( kids, house, family etc.) However, I now find myself looking at these type of websites and fear the worst ( or best ) I dare say it wont be long before I get a few bits together and head back to the banks of The Mighty Barwon river.......

Comments:Sean I,am glad we are not alone on the ethics of carp fishing.
Sadly I wish that some of those bureaucratic numb skulls would take the time to read something like what you have posted and try to absorb the facts of reality that we face with our chosen sport, maybe it is to late for a change or they somewhat know it is irreversible.
Anyway mate on a lighter note, great site and a top read.

I'm new to coarse fishing myself, and I shall be putting your advice to the test this weekend.

I'll be going for carp using a rod. It's summer time here, summer time here, and I'll be night fighing at my local lake. Could you suggest a depth to fish?

Kind Regards
Mike
