| Comments: | Dave Semich & I planed & paid 3 months in advance for a trip to the Everglades National Park in S.W. Florida to fly fish for Snook, Reds & Tarpon. We had 3 different guides lined up to fish us April 4th thru the 8th. Unfortunately the area had a huge storm before we arrived & all the waters everywhere were muddy & the fishing was all but dead. We stuck a few small snook & a few larger ones that broke off. It was so bad that one guide charged us only for a half day and then another guide for Friday recommended we don't even try as another storm was & did come in Thursday nite. Oh well, inspite of being very disappointing, we did learn a lot & I certainly would go back again in hopes of clean water. The pain I was in with my hip going out didn't add a lot to the trip, but I knew if I hooked some big fish I wouldn't have felt any pain. I'm due for hip replacement surgery May 5th and a back surgery sometime after that.
Does any of our members own a Sea Eagle. Would like to hear from someone who has one as I am thinking about getting one for the B.C. trip and would like to know if they enjoy it, etc. Will keep in touch. Tight lines, Steve |

| Comments: | Went up to Big Eddy below Benham falls. Have had some great luck on brown or black (large) Woolly Buggers. Last weekend hooked into 2 14 inch and a couple 17 inch + rainbows, great fights and amazing jumps. Dead drift just below faster sections. Drop it into deeper holes after fast section. I fish them alot like i fish streamers. Let it swing and keep the line fairly tight, wait for the fun part. With the bigger guys i dont even have to set the hook, they are that aggressive on the large buggers. Good luck... tight lines |

| Where I Fished: | Re: Crooked |
| Comments: | Regarding removal of whitefish on the Crooked: This would cause the fishery to tank. Whitefish are a native species (not suckers, they're in the salmonid family) just as the rainbows are and a necessary component to most trout streams, and it's normal for them to exist in 5-10x the numbers of the trout. If you're catching whiteys on the Crooked and want to find rainbows, fish faster water just upstream. The 'bows take up the best part of the lie and the whitefish feed on their coattails. |

| Comments: | Due to busy work schedule, haven't fished like normal. But hit it hard for these 2 days. Very frustrating; nothing but solid "mountain whitefish". Only saw 1 rainbow rise and it was small.
I can only wonder what this fishery would be like if the suckers were removed and the rainbow fishery enhanced. I really believe that this river could be one of the West's "blue-ribbon" trout streams. PRINEVILLE!!!- Just think of the potential boost to the economy if this happened! I have fished this river for over 16 years and have really seen the rainbow numbers fall off. It isn't because of the water issues, it is the competition with these suckers. I read the numbers about #-number of whitefish per mile and was not surprised @ all, it is huge. Curious what others have experienced. Happy New Year to you all. I am new to this site and have question: Is there any type of FLY-TIERS Expo here in Central Oregon?? Thanks again. |

| Where I Fished: | craine prairie res... |
| When I Fished: | end of june through mid aug 04 |
| Comments: | what a year out on craine... that should say enough about the great year that my dear friend mark kanitz and i had on the water this year, if you know my history on that lake... i have been fishing craine for five years now and up until this year i have never been able to close the deal with a hogaloid crainebow. i have spent five years hooking and then (longdistance)releasing with great consistancy. sometimes in the trees, sometimes i was broke off even before my brain could register the super hard yank that only a true never-seen-a-tank wild crainebow can deliver. on more that a few attacks i have been left reeling in almost all of my line after one of the bohemiths had run out and then (with the opposible thumb that they seem to grow the second you hook them) simply un-buttoned himself. and one time i was totally spooled by what looked like a 20+ pounder. yes even the monsters of craine will clear the water like a 2-3 pounder.
so you can see that when i say what a year i can ONLY be talking about good things. well this year has most definatly made up for the last five. mark and i have hooked landed and released over 50 wild and dangerous crainebows in the short two months of fishing the res. we had our regular tue and thur fishing nights (that is all my wife would let me go) so in 16 trips we managed to do what i could not manage in five years... i will say that my secret to success on craine comes from several changes i had made for this year... 1 new gun just for craine. "reddington rs2 10' 7wt" that i bought from my buddy steve, owner of central oregon outdoors. 2 rio aqualux clear int. multitip line, this keeps the fly in the zone all the time unlike my old sink tip or type III. 3 frog hair flourocarbon tippet. i have found that you can go a bit heavier and still trick thoes ultra leadershy fish with it. and 4 persistance... despite what folks might say about craine, there are just as many big fish it her as there always has been. they are just smarter. the smallest fish we caught was a 17in. bow that mark caught in mid july. the rest of them were all 4lbs and bigger with the average being about 7lbs. the biggest that we landed was a whopping 12+ pounder that we ended up giving to one of the local baitheads that was in the channel with us at the time, due to the fact that we could not get it started again. we both tried for about 1/2 an hour and finally gave up. that is when we made a convert of the bait guy. his last words to us were " man i got to get me one of them fly pole outfits." i would most definatly reccomend craine to all who want to see it all on one piece of h2o real estate. from osprey to bald eagles to the occasional grumpy otter. i would wait until the weather gets HOT then find a good channel and fish it with a int. sink line and south twin special that can be bought from bob at the sun river fly shop. the quinn channel has been the best producer for us this year so that is where i will be next year. hope to see you out on the water. take care all bordy. |

| Comments: | I don't know how much help this is (the 14th was the first time I ever went fly fishing--fiancee bought me a package as a gift), but I caught a 7 1/2 pound brown trout at Sun River, which according to the guy at the fly shop, is absolutely amazing. Caught it on a stone fly, which was apparently not the optimal fly for the time frame and location.
I've since hit Meadow (Descheutes River) down in Bend, Klines Falls in Redmond, and Tumalo Creek in Tumalo, and have not only not had so much as a nibble, but haven't even seen a fish rise--though I did catch a drowned cricket at Meadow and a crayfish in Tumalo Creek by accident...and I think I winged a bird, but that was above water. All bank fishing (can't afford waders at the moment) The last 3 trips haven't been all that much fun for me...need guidance...think I'll hit the next meeting and say 'allo, make introductions, see if I can't find any :P |

Walked the south shore out to the first rocky point then broke a channel thru the ice for about 100'. Get to brag a bit; 1st on the lake and 1st to catch fish for the year. Caught a 15" Atlantic and a 13" Rainbow. Both on a grey Callibaetis. Saw a couple of small (maybe 18) dark bodied caddis and a couple of wind drift spiders. About three risers and that was it.
Water is about 35 or 36 degrees because the surface crystal ice from last night was still there at 4 in the afternoon. |

| When I Fished: | 12/14/03-12/15/03 |
| Comments: | Spent a quick trip fishing the stretch between Locked Gate and White River on the Lower Deschutes. Weather was beautiful, between 40-45 degrees, but the wind did make it feel a bit cooler. Water level is up a few feet from the Fall, and moving pretty quick, so step carefully toward those holes you fished a couple of months back. The White River was also dumping its usual chololate milk into the river, so I didn't bother with anything further downstream.
I stuck with the black A-leech on a sinking line and short leader, as did the rest of our group. We caught a few redsides by Nena, and had a couple of steelhead hook-ups near Blue Hole and Oasis. I need to remember to pay more attention to the fly, instead of the deer across the river, and I might improve my landing average! All in all, a good trip. I think I counted all of six people on 5-6 miles of river...with that kind of scenery, and so little pressure, a fish would have been a bonus! Good Luck, and have a safe and happy holiday season! |

In the span of about 90 minutes I caught around 8 rainbows and redsides using a stonefly pattern I tie myself (more of an improved sofa pillow without the tail and with a darker wing).
The bugs were still out in force, and the fish were feeding furiously but seemed pretty selective, at least until the shadow of the mountain hit the water. |

| Comments: | Fishing was good as always on the crooked !!! around 35 fish per rod on midges. Water level was extreamly low making holding water for fish pretty predictable. Hatches of BWO around 10:30 lasting until 11:30 accounted for a couple of nice bows. If you decide to go, have a great time and please if you see any garbage on the bank, don't be afraid to pick it up. In my 30+ years of fishing the crooked, I have never seen so much garbage left by anglers. |

| Comments: | My wife and I have fished at Trout Creek about 3 times a week, after work, all summer. Compared to summer flows, the river is up about 6" to 12" and is a little colder. On Saturday, we fished the island that is just in front of the day-use parking area and did fair. Mainly whitefish during the day, but towards evening, we started getting some dry action on caddis and mayfly cripples. If you are after steelhead, just downstream from the island is a great riffle! We stopped fishing for a 1/2 hour, just to watch all the folks catching them. I'm not sure, but I think we saw about 10 or 12 caught in that time. One of those was a native over 12lbs. |

The 25th went to the same spot but went down river. At 5:00 pm, no one around must have all gone to the Deshutes! As I got to the river the sun broke through and a cadis hatch occurred. I tied on a No. 12 elk hair cadis and landed 7 fish before the falls, 3 redsides and the rest were regular rainbows. 2 of the redsides measured 17" and 16" and the rest were between 12" - 10". Lost my one cadis pattern on a scrappy little bugger above the falls, who broke off in the submerged trees. A great evening to remember in beautiful Cental Oregon. |

You might want to go into the area and learn the water flow and holes while it's down. That'll make it much easier to locate the "good" spots when the river is back up to regular flow (hopefully) next summer. |

| Comments: | Float tubed it from Bull Bend to Wyeth campground. Took a little over 4 hours to make the run. Partly it's the speed of the stream flow, but mostly it was the fishing. Caught too many of everything there to count. Set at the starting point for about 20 minutes doing C & R and finding what worked best. Had the best responses to a light tan Elk Hair Caddis size 16.
Rainbows ran from about 6" to 16" and the Browns were up to about 18" or so. Will do a report Tuesday after we drift it a little higher and see how low it is. Reports are that it could be held down to 45 CFS after the irrigation is shut off tomorrow. |

| Where I Fished: | Mann Lake |
| When I Fished: | October 6-7 |
| Comments: | Spent 2 beautiful weather days at Mann! The lake is low with algae along the edges, but still very fishable. Fish were close to shore feeding on chubs, I think, (short 2" fish shaped like a football) and whatever else, often within inches of the bank. I've never seen these small fish there before and wonder where they came from?? There is a lot of algae growth that makes fishing frustrating at times, (and it was smelly too!) but the fish were feeding and willing. I tried the nymphs that usually work there, with limited success and lots of frustration with algae. We finally tried buggers/streamers that represent minnows and larger bites of food, and then cast to the many working fish. We caught lots of fish this way, some within inches of the bank as they chased prey in the algea muck. They were taking something under the surface too, but we had no luck with chironomids or nymphs. No doubt there is a fishing opportunity here we missed. All fish caught were the usual Mann Cutts, 16-18". There was 6-8 camps on the west shore, half of which were chuckar hunting, not fishing. Anyone thinking of heading over there can email me for additional info. |

| Where I Fished: | Davis Lake |
| When I Fished: | October 1 |
| Comments: | Great day! Steve and I hit the water from about 10:30 until 1:20 and both caught and netted over a dozen 1 to 3 pounders, did LDR's on another dozen and had too many "hit and misses" to count. Fish very healthy. Water is quite cold.
Fish were taking the Davis Lake Special, a dark olive Bugger with a Marabou tail and a black wooly leech pattern. Only problem is they're hitting so soft that you can miss a lot. The only way to tell if it's a fish, or you've snagged some seaweed style algae, is to set the hook and se what happens. The lake is down from it's usual 4,000 acres in size to maybe 500. Easy access is from the Eagle boat ramp by way of a channel that flows towards shore into a vortex drain near the end of the ramp. |
