| Comments: | As a victim (see Oct 15, 1991 entry), I feel I have even more a right to speak up. Gun-free zones are a horrible idea. In my specific case, it would not have made a difference, but look at the statistics across the country. Firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens is a deterent to crime. I was not injured by an evil weapon, but a misguided boy using it improperly. I've written my legislators in Texas asking them to co-sponsor, or at least vote for, the Open Carry bill coming before them this session. The Second Amendment was an original part of the Bill of Rights for a reason.

| Comments: | To whomever reads this:
I am doing research for a college class exercise. I chose this website as a source for the topic of school violence. I am trying to determine the AUTHOR of this website--something I have yet to find while reading lots of information that intrigues me here. I understand that the information compiled here is from various sources, but I wanted to give credit in my citation to the website to an author. If he/she/they wish to remain unknown, that is very understandable. I hope very much to receive a response, but if I don't, I understand that as well. ... I very well remember the Columbine massacre. I was preparing to go on a Missions trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland with several church friends when this horrific event took place. I was a stay at home mom at that time, having worked as a teacher in schools (both private & public)and child care centers, daycares and preschools before and after that time. While on that trip I remember recalling some of the events in conversation and was so amazed to be in a city (Belfast) that is internationally known for it's violence and religious differences and yet, in that foreign country our main objective was to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ as Christians to the student bodies of several different public school age students INSIDE their schools. We had been invited to share our ministry in an assembly of elementary school age children where I was excited to present that Gospel dressed up as a clown to sing and dance. I also had the opportunity to walk freely amongst the people in the streets during a different event where we grilled hamburgers and had a street party presenting Jesus and the message of hope that He brings to the children and adults of those neighborhoods without any laws or reprecussions to our affiliation or motive. I felt a freedom that I can only describe as being unique to that time and place and situation. Many years later the Columbine story was revealed to me further as I read a book about student, Rachel Scott. I was reminded of my trip to Belfast and how it was posed to me that in America, the land that was settled by the Pilgrims, who sought out religious freedom, students were murdered in the name of declaring themselves believers of God; in of all places a school where they were not always encouraged to share that aspect of their lives. I was however made more hopeful in reading the journal entries of Rachel about the 2 killers whom she shared classes with prior to the shootings. I was hopeful because I knew that from her story and others like her's there would be a message sent out to countless others that in order to be who God created us to be, one must not let his/her little light be extinguished because others do not share our beliefs or convictions. What an example she became to me! I began to seek God in a fresher way once I read her account of how she had a relationship with Him--and I had been a Christian for MANY years!! Thank you for this website! I will refer back to it's contents in further study and cause myself to not only reflect and prepare, but to PRAY for the families of school violence and injustices. I will use it as a tool to remind myself of the senselessness of death and to the perpetuation of action as I can discuss what I have discovered here with others in my life. The burdens that must be shared are showcased here. To fulfil the law of Christ, (Galatians 6:2) we must be educated of the needs of others. I salute those who have tirelessly contributed to this website and others like it. I do not consider it a glorification of evil, but a preventative tool of action to reach out to the hurting and to motivate the ones who do not know where to begin their campaign against school violence. God's blessings to those who will never forget. May He heal all wounds and wipe away all tears! Sincerely, Barbie Gordon, Virginia,USA |

| Comments: | Drugs or alcohol, their behavior begins to change, they sometimes spend big amounts of their income to support their addiction, they don't communicate as well or as much with the people around them.Alcoholism oftentimes produces this illusion that nothing has degenerated in the life of the one affected by it. But the fact that they don’t perceive it does not mean the situation is not extremely wrong. The people in the addicted individuals’ environment should speak up. They have created intervention to make it less hard for those individuals. It is extremely good to have a lot of people performing the intervention. The person struggling with an alcohol dependency must not perceive beforehand the intervention. The intervention frequently makes the person struggling with an alcohol dependency face what his addiction does to him and everyone around. The whole point of doing an intervention is to have the dependent individual enter an alcohol rehab. That is why it’s less difficult if the people have searched for treatment centers that would fit the addicted person. Because an addicted person can be very unstable, you should be ready to send the alcoholic right away when he notices that he needs help

| Comments: | April 20th is fast approaching which is the 10-year anniversary of Columbine. This date was chosen and still is chosen by numerous nuts because it is also Hitlers birthday. With bullying and school violence still a problem everywhere together we can help your listeners. Together we can provide solutions and awareness. With the topic of school violence, copycats come out of the woodwork and the secret service reports that 80% of school shooters claimed they were bullied.
The goal for us is to make parents aware and to have them discuss the following with their child: 1. Most of the time before something happens others are aware of it and just dismiss it. 2. Many attackers have been caught when their threats are taken seriously by those on social networks. 3. If a school threat was spotted on myspace or facebook would your child ignore it or report it? 4. We can be proactive or remain reactive. ______________________ Randall Flynn <A HREF="http://www.drug-intervention.com/oregon-drug-intervention.html "REL="DoFollow">Drug Intervention Oregon</A> |

My son was about to be 5 months old when his father was shot infront of Channel Islands High School in 1989.. I know it's about that time that his murderer Arnel Salagubang will be going up for appeal...never has my son in all these years received restitution for loss of knowing his father...
In 1989, alot of lives were changed due to this ignorant act, and it seems like yesterday that this all happened...the only realization of the years that has past is looking at my son and seeing him grow into the man he is. My son is in the U.S Navy and still has the loss of never knowing his father. I appreciate the article you wrote and took interest in. Thank you so much, Casiana Hollers- the deceased ex-girlfriend and mother of his only son.. |

Tuesday, October 3, 1995 While doing some follow-up on jury duty, looked this one up.. Boy, somebody really got the facts messed up on this one, makes it look like poor Marcos was almost a victim of justice gone bad. If this is the accuracy of information on this site, then what value is it. I sat in the court room the entire trial, the facts are not what you reported. During a fight at Gilroy today, 15-year-old gang member Carlos Vaca was pushed into 16-year-old Marcos Valdez, who was defending himself from another opponent. The fight climaxed when a five-inch blade found its way into Carlos. He later died from his wounds. Marcos, Pavel Zapata, 17, and Gerardo Avila, 19, were all charged in Carlos's murder. | Comments: | As a PA State Trooper who is actively engaged in the prevention of violent death in our schools through security assessments and presentations, this website has been one of my go-to sites for historic and current events for several years. Although I routinely search for school violence incidents, the complacency, particularly of our media, has made it difficult to stay abreast of current events w/o spending a substantial amount of research time, which is not always available.
I am greatly appreciative of this great source of information, along with other websites focused on school security. Your efforts are honorable, but more importantly, greatly effective in helping those of us who work in this field maintain our advantage regarding current events when dealing with others who are not. Thanks again for your efforts and I will end by saying that I direct those in the school and law enforcement community to this website as a matter of personal protocol. |

I can not remember what I was wearing but I can remember at first it all felt like a dream, and thenwe all came to relize it was not the teachers ushered us into what ever room you were the closet to and closed and locked the doors and made us sit under our desks and pleaded with us to say down and away from the windows. I will never forget our teacher Mrs.Clark sitting on the floor with us telling us about the time she worked as an english teacher in one of the jails and telling us off a riot that happened and how the inmates gathered around to protect her from harm.I recall now that it took our minds off of what was happening at the time. I was to scared to think of anything but getting out of there alive and wanting to see my family and friends. My heart goes out to anyone who has ever gone through this and I pray to god everyday my children never have to.Please stop think about you say or do before it is to late. |

I think that you have a valuable resource here, but it's not without its rough spots. Keep up the good work though, as it's certainly appreciated. |

| Comments: | I was only 10 years old when Larry Brown of Mount Pleasant High in San Jose was shot and killed. I went to the school just across the street - Foothill - now a part of the middle school August Boeger. We were alerted and brought inside and locked down. We were not allowed to leave, nor were our parents allowed into the school until it was secure.
At the time, we only heard there was someone with a gun in the area, after our parents were inside, everyone, and I do mean everyone was briefed on the incident, and what precautions the school takes in events like these. It came to a reality that day that any of us could have been shot and killed out of rage - even by mistake. In a twisted case of irony, I ended up attending the same high school as the shooter, Yerba Buena High, for my 4-years of hell. I hated that school, and was constantly reminded that this was the school of the shooter, as I was a White kid in a predominantly Vietnamese school. Unfortunately no one remembers these events unless they were moved by them as I was. Sometimes it is better to forget, others, it is better to remember. |

| Comments: | This list really ticks me off. You've got ONE story whereby you 'discover what REALLY happened', and you posted it and left the erroneous FIRST post there to show how media tells lies.
Why did you not bother to to that for any other story?? You send such misinformation out there when you don't tell the whole story. Joey Summerall was a renowned, particularly vicious bully at Tavares Middle School. He was mean, and cruel. He would grab girls' private parts, dump plates and/or trays of food on people (or maybe he'd just dump milk all over you...depending on his mood), hurt and regularly, systematically, terrorized people...he was just vicious, and kids hated coming to school because of him. Kids couldn't LEARN because of him, because their entire existence at Tavares Middle School was worrying that they'd see him and that he'd hurt them. Nothing more. One day, the wrong kid had had enough. Keith did get kicked out that day from home, so he was already in a bad way, and he KNEW what he'd face when he got to school....the same, UNCHECKED TORMENT. He snappened and that was it. He went to school and pumped 13 bullets into Joey Summerall's chest, at school, right in front of everyone. What I remember being most profound about it was the local news interviewed lots of the students, many whom were bullied by Joey, and they all talked of the ugly they suffered at his hands. I was amazed that none of them seemed really traumatized. Many were upset, but they did the best they could NOT to show their complete and utter RELIEF that their tormentor would hurt them no more. One girl even said as much. She was upset, but clearly RELIEVED. But Keith has just been labled 'bad' for this, and that's that. And OF COURSE, the principal claimed to have absolute ZERO knowledge of the hell these kids were enduring at the hands of this monster. 'No clue at all' he says. They actually planted a tree for the monster a year later. I think it should be bulldozed and if I knew where it was, I'd chop it down myself then run it through a wood chipper, then burn the chips, then dump the ashes at the smelliest landfill. BULLIES SHOULD NEVER BE CELEBRATED!!!! And of course, Joey's mom and family were devastated at his 'untimely tragic death', but why didn't his mom know her son's hateful, ugly, legacy? How did she NOT know how much pain, anguish and turmoil he continually inflicted on others? How deeply and utterly miserable he made everyone around him? But of course, the Keith Eugene Anderson is just 'bad', no one acknowledges that bullies push too far, sometimes with devastating results. From day one, my heart went out to Keith Anderson. He was going through one of the worst times in his life, and on top of it all, he had to put up with Joey Summerall constantly picking at him and trying to start fights. Bullies are the scum of the earth, and I will NEVER mourn the death of a single one of them...no matter how old they are. |

| Comments: | Columbine was indeed a tragedy. The "bit" on DeKalb High School shooting 1987 I find offensive. I was there and so were my sisters and many friends. We rode the bus with both Timothy and Nathan, to say they bullied Nathan into his actions is just wrong. That young boy had issues outside of school. I never saw anyone "bully" him. He was mainly a loner that never fit and didn't appear to try to. Timothy was the exact opposite. A ray of sunshine despite his challenges. The media turned our tragedy into a "witch hunt". Its not always only one thing. It is many. Bless them both . |

| Comments: | Regarding the paragraph on Valley High School in March 1982, I'm glad (and grateful) that older school violence episodes have not been forgotten. I've always been frustrated by the media's implication that school violence is a recent manifestation. I'm sure that events like these have occrred many times over the decades, we are just hearing more about them now that mass communication has improved.
I am saddened by the fact that the same mistakes are made over and over. There were several signs that this Valley HS student (the shooter) was unstable mentally and did not belong at Valley. It seems every time I hear of another tragic event, we find out that there were prior signs in those cases as well. My saddness at hearing of the tragedy at Columbine was doubled in that the lessons learned at Valley High School, and other schools, were not enough to prevent further tragedies. I do disagree with one statement in the Velley High School article. "The next day, things were back to normal with no counselors made available for the students or teachers." I was a student in a nearby classroom when Mr. Piggot was killed. It's true that no grief counselors were made available. In the sense that school was held the next day and the bell rang for each period as usual, then yes, things were indeed back to normal. But I remember spending class time talking about the event with teachers and students, and it was a while before we were back to the usual lessons plans. I hope no one thinks that this tragedy was not treated seriously or that students and teachers were unaffected. Thank you. M Bottari |

| Comments: | Just wanted to let you know that the shooting in Pine Bluff in 1970 interrupted our graduating class. We were the last graduating class of Coleman High where the elementary and High School was separated by the street. I always wondered why the Columbine was so big when things like this had happened years earlier. It is probably not reported because of shedding bad light on a town that already has it's problems. Both teachers and students were very fearful for the rest of the school year. It happened near graduation I would say between March and May. It was beautiful day outside when the car of Southwest High School students drove up onto the cafeteria parking lot. Children ran everywhere to safety. Only one person died that day from the car of the ones that had driven onto our campus, all because of a misunderstanding. You know how schools were rivals during this time. Since noone has said anymore...I'm going to leve this as it is. But, yes...it did happen. |
