Comments:I read your message regarding Smiths that you posted to the McLaughlin list. I have no Smiths but thought I might find a connection to your McLaughlins which you listed at the bottom of your message. I just checked your rootsweb site and you have NO McLaughlins! Why are you posting messages on the McLaughlin site? I agree with the previous message...that amounts to SPAM.

Comments:I am descended from a James & Sarah Smith (also spelled Smyth) who originally came to NY from England. They lived in the Deer Park / Babylon (Suffolk Co) area of Long Island. James was a shoemaker. Their daughter, Sarah, was a nurse and was married to a Platt Baldwin. Their daughter, Susie Baldwin, married William Weed; their son Chester is my grandfather's father. From census records, I see that James & Sarah also had other children, including James, Sarah, Frances, Caroline, Eliza and Jacob. There is also a Mary, but I notice in a later census she is listed as Mary Hart and I am thinking that she could have been the daughter, Sarah's, daughter (I think another census has a Sarah Hart listed; perhaps Sarah's spouse had died and she later remarried ?) I have recently begun research on this part of my family and would be interested in any info anyone may have to share. Thank you!

Comments:My great great grandparents are Paul Gallaudet and Catherine Smith, daughter of Samuel Smith. Born about 1828 and died Jan 5, 1906, in Brooklyn, at the age of 78. They are buried in a Middle Village cemetery in New York. This is all I have of my elusive family. Pauls' father was James Nostrand Gallaudet married to Margaget White.James' father was Paul Gallaudet married to Abigail Nostrand, daughter of Samuel Nostrand and Hannah Ketcham of Huntington Long Island. All the Gallaudets lived in Manhattan until James Nostrand Gallaudet moved his family to Brooklyn, NY around 1829.

Comments:William Martin Smith b. 1824/5 Brooklyn,NewYork and d. 1902 Pascagoula-Jackson Co.,MS.
It has been reported that our Wm. Martin Smith is a cousin to a James Everdell (engraver) of Manhattan,NY. There is a family of Everdells in Manhattan,NY including James and they are all "Engravers and Printers" per the census records so that information is at least accurate. I need to find the connection between our Wm. Smith and James Everdell that makes them cousins.
We feel Wm. Martin Smiths father is Wm. Marion Smith b. c. 1790 a (possible Cmdr. on the frigate "USS UNITED STATES") and his mother is Maria Nicholson b. c. 1800 possible daughter of John B. Nicholson also a Naval Officer.
I feel our Smith family line may be related to the Smiths of LongIsland. We most likely stem from Richard Smith and Tangiers Smith and are currently trying to make the connection.
Wm. Martin Smith served in the Mexican Wars 1840's-1848 and also in the Civil War 1861-1865. He was paroled as a P.O.W. in 1865 in Macon,GA April,1865.
He married in TX c. 1850 but lost his wife in an accident. Wm. Martin Smith married again to Martha Moore in 1866 Montgomery,AL d/o Valentine Moore (NC) and Louisa B. Ward (NC). The raised their family in Scranton/Pascagoula-Jackson Co.,MS from 1870-Present.
Wm. Martin Smith and Martha Moore children: i.Wm. Marion Smith b. 1866 AL md. Minnie Whatley ii.Madora Smith b. 1869 AL md. Joeseph Cirlot iii.Mariah Smith b. 1871 MS md.
