Comments:This is a pretty good site.
The one thing that I want to ask is about the Kingsfoil/Athelias thing. Is it all right to use such in a sentence if you are explaining the word to another character?

Otherwise, I would argue that Tolkein also inserts random Elvish into his own sentences when Character's are speaking.

Comments:One kind of fanon that I've seen more and more often is the "laughing, smiling, cradles them while they are upset" Namo. IIRC, every single description of Namo the Professor wrote had him relatively silent, and grim.

Wishful thinking, perhaps, to have a jovial Namo, but unfounded...

The silly and stupid things fans dream up... I don't know if I want to laugh or tweak their noses. Bonding?! Melpomaen (Figwit)?! Please!!!

Comments:Book-Aragorn was also insecure to some extent, but not in the "reluctant messiah" (i.e. clichéd) way Film-Aragorn was. He doubted his leadership abilities - namely the wisdom of the decisions he made.

Saw the new forum. Shiny. Are you open or just waiting to announce the site somewhere?

Comments:Hi! I was just reading your section on elven smell, and whether or not elves are repulsed by "unclean mortals". I noted that you said you had no knowledge of any elves being put off by Gandalf's smoking- and just wanted to say that, while we aren't talking about Gandalf in the Two Towers (I tried to find the actual reference, but didn't have my copy handy) Legolas stands away from Merry, Pippin, Aragorn and Gimli smoking when they find the hobbits at Isengard. He may have even made a comment about not wanting to stand in the smoke- though, without checking the book I wouldn't swear to that. Please understand that I'm not writing this to be argumentitive, I just wanted to be helpful.
Yours, Erin.

Comments:Sorry, pressed a wrong button on my first try.

Great site! Very well researched.

Although I consider myself rather firm in Tolkien canon, there are things on your site I wasn't really aware of (big feet...) that they had creeped into my head. Also I have finally understood that "giving up immortality" is related to being Half-elf.

It's a pity that those people who write fics with fanon things don't come here before they spread their "ideas" to others who aren't aware they are not Tolkien's concepts.

BTW, what about Glorfindel and Erestor being rivals? I don't think you mentioned it. It appears quite often in fanfic.

Another thing in fanfic I think is disturbing is Legolas' and Gimli's constant bickering. I don't see it being that extreme in the book..

As I said, great site. It's bookmarked. Nienor

Comments:I am new to the LOTR. Upon having surgery right before Christmas, I received many videos to keep my mind occupied while I recover. I watch the extended DVD as my first LOTR experience having never seen the movies on the big screen. I feel instantly in love with Tolkien's world and characters and strived to learn more. I bought the books soon after watching the movies a couple of times (I swear I could watch them 10x and still catch new things as I learn more about TOlkien's works). I, as I am sure many people find, seeked answers to many questions of history prior to where the movies began. Your site was very helpful to learn more about the pre and post history of LOTR movies/book. Thanks for taking the time and energy to do your site....GREAT JOB

Comments:Hello.....:)
First I just want to state that i like your writing, at the moment I am particulary fond of your story "Bane". I dont mind reading "slash" fiction; although I hesitate to call it so. Your story portrays an hones growth of affection, and as such to me is simply a well written fanfiction. I particulary like your twist with Maglor housing his brothers fea`s! Not to mention the best part of your writing, which iis an artistic personal flavour in a blissful mixture of Tolkien himself. You manage to create something of your own while staying true to middle-earth.

While browsing through your wonderful fics, i managed to come across this page. I just want to say:Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!! Would all writers of Tolkien fanfiction take a tour here, perhaps it would rid us all of some extremelu horrible attempts at fanfiction. I have lost count of how many times I have come across "fanons" such as these, and honestly!!! I have a real aversion especially for rape, torture, thranduil-abuse fics. Though they seem to multiply by the day. Secondly I just want to laugh, or maybe crie....im not all tohether sure anymore.....every time elves, and Legolas in particular, give up theire immortality for the love of a mortal!!!! I realise that I am now ranting....but come on!!! Anyway, its nice to see someone putting an effort into Tolkien-fiction in general. So, again....THANK YOU!!! Every time I leave a rewiev and the fic in question clearly is in need of some facts i shall with all humbility direct them here! That should teach them that Thranduil simple does not give Legolas as a play-thing to his older brothers!!

Igrainne....:)

Comments:Fascinating that you have taken the time to research and detail the "fanon"! Personally I find fanon a lot of fun, and since it seems that from time to time that Tolkien left a lot of details out of his universe, "fanon" is an enjoyable way to fill in the blanks. Of course, when I write it, I do carefully label it as "AU". ;-)

Comments:Hi, good start to the page. I've been lurking on Silmfics for a while and followed the discussion that led to this page with interest. I'm glad you've decided to start something that will help keep all the facts straight in fan-fiction (and has great promise as a quick reference guide when you know you read something in The Silmarillion or HoME but can't remember exactly where!). Keep up the good work.
