Having planned to dine there in the coming week, I was shocked to read your news about this great restaurant being gone. I began to go there in 1976 and whether it was young romance or just the warm, sincere atmosphere and fabulous food, it was simply magic. Returning many times through the years, I proposed to my wife there on April Fools Day, 1982. We have been married since 1983 with two terrific girls. The menu began with only three entrees which would be changed or altered per chef whim each day. My favorites were the brisket of beef, chicken gruyere, and the chicken with wild rice and chestnuts. Everything seemed to come together with a nice Beajolais Villages, usually a Jadot. I will always cherish sweet and irrevocable memories of this remarkable place. Everything changes, but how I wish I could have been there one more last time.

On June 3, I wrote in my blog about my visit the previous night to one of my favorite restaurants here in Chicago; Genesee Depot. Everything was normal, nothing seemed amiss. Then about a month later I went back and--surprise--it was gone. Not just closed but cleaned out, with a sheriff's eviction notice on the door. I came to learn that the owner/chef, who had been in that location for about 25 years, decided last fall that he wanted to do something else with his life. He tried to sell the business but was unsuccessful because he didn't have a liquor license (it was popular among BYOB fans) or a lease. He stopped paying his rent, hoping to settle up after he sold the business, hence the eviction. Since the closing I have heard from other Genesee Depot fans, so I started this Genesee Depot Guest Book, where you can post your memories or other comments about this wonderful little neighborhood restaurant. (Note that I have no official relationship with the restaurant and am not in contact with the former owner. I'm simply a patron saddened by the loss of a favorite place to eat.)
