Carol Allardyce Sunday, June 14th 2009 - 08:33:44 PM carol.radnor@googlemail.com This is a tremendous site giving lots of info about this beautiful village. It suggests that the 'writer' really likes the area. The website is easy to use. Unfortunately I don't think I've found holiday accommodation for a couple and a greyhound! As guess that, as usual, I will just have to settle for a quick visit whilst staying elsewhere.

Yvonne Davies Wednesday, May 6th 2009 - 03:43:56 PM yvonne.d@virgin.net My maiden name was Pocklington, anyone in Crakehall will know the Pocklingtons! Unfortunately since my Mother and Father died the only time I come to the village is to the cemetary, so have largely forgotten what a lovely village Crakehall still is, although much changed from my childhood. I must congratulate the webmaster and all the people who give information to put on it.

Alison Metcalfe Wednesday, August 13th 2008 - 10:02:14 PM ametcalfe@doghouse.myzen.co.uk My great, great, great grandfather is supposed to have originated from Crakehall, and in the late 1840's walked (amazingly) with a race horse from Crakehall to Staffordshire at the age of 11 years old. My grandfather never returned home but became a jockey riding for the Staffordshire stables he delivered the horse to. I have returned to Crakehall with my family and seen the war memorials with the names of Metcalfe on them but does anyone have any other information on Metcalfe family history before 1850?

Pat Wilkinson Monday, July 21st 2008 - 11:03:29 AM patwilkinson60@tiscali.co.uk My grandparents Arthur Morton and Edith Morton (nee Coates)worked and met at Crakehall. He was a chauffeur and she was in service and a dressmaker. Sadly he was killed in WW1 and so Edith moved back to her old village of Swinton nr Malton where she lived for the rest of her life and brought up 2 sons. Arthur was born in 1887 and died 1917. His father, Robinson, also worked at Crakehall and they were from Middleham. Hoping to come to visit Crakehall very soon. Interesting web site.

There is a cluster of Black Horses, past and present, in your area and it is suggested that this marks the victory ride of Arthur to Durham after the battle at Castleford I "borrowed your old photo of the Black Horse and have put a link to your site from mine. Barbara Easton Sunday, June 10th 2007 - 09:00:49 PM eastns@blueyonder.co.uk Visited the lovely village of Crakehall today for the first time. My Grandfather was born in there in 1881 and ended up in Leeds. My Greatgrandparents were Thomas and Mary Thompson; Mary was a Harland. The daughters of the family married into the Pease family and the Scrimshaws. It is fun to speculate how little the village is changed since he lived there. I hope there is a local doctor now - one of the few stories about his time in Crakehall is how his mother had to walk him all the way to the the doctors in Bedale!

Chris Best Thursday, November 30th 2006 - 12:52:43 AM dalesman3@aol.com http://www.chapelfarmhouse.co.uk Excellent site, arrived here via Ian Hancock's outstanding work. Put onto him by wife's nephew's wife, living in Hull, who is into gynealogy. We already knew a little about Crakehall. My wife's Great Grandparents (Lupton and Martha Lawson)were landlord/lady at the Black Horse in 1901. At least 3 of their children went to war. The wife's Grandad, Thomas Stelling, survived. His 2 younger brothers, James and Lupton, did not. They are 2 of the 12 names commemorated on your war memorial. They both died of wounds within 4 days of each other in the last 10 weeks of The Great War. We have visited the places their battalions served before their final action and visited their graves in France. At the time of their deaths, their parents were living at the Railway Station. So, would love to hear from any Stellings or related folk.

Tony Percival Tuesday, August 15th 2006 - 08:14:36 PM tony-pauline@tiscali.co.uk In response to the message from Nick at the Stockton Savages Cricket team, we recently held a 'friendly' match between the Crakehall Cricket Club/Bay Horse team and the Savages C.C. from Stockton on the village green. We all had a great day and all the families enjoyed it as well. Luckily the weather was great and we were just beaten with scores of 254 against our 235. Not bad for a bunch of old guys. We would like to say a very big thank you to all the people who helped run the bar and the barbeque and everyone else who was involved on the day. We raised over £150 for the Cricket Club funds but best of all everyone wants a return match next year at Crathorne...when we shall seak REVENGE!!( We want the Allan Skipp Trophy back,Mark!!)

Ian Hancock Friday, January 13th 2006 - 11:56:28 PM hancock@glenlodge.free-online.co.uk http://www.glenlodge.me.uk I spent many happy holidays as a child in Crakehall when my grandmother, Clara Hancock lived at "The Bungalow" overlooking the bridge, and my great aunt, Gertrude Stelling, was landlady of the Bay Horse. My parents moved there after my father's retirement, and built the bungalkow called "Hilltop" in Little Crakehall. My father and I spent a lot of time researching the history of the village and I am in the process of putting this material on my website. If you have a family link with Crakehall, or are interested in its history, please have a look. I would be glad to receive any historical information you have about the village. Thanks

avrilblack Wednesday, August 17th 2005 - 09:41:54 PM avrilblack@aol.com We have family connections with Crakehall dating back to 1930 our great grandfather was the publican of the Malt Shovel Inn which we believe was a Staging Post at some time. On looking at the photographs of the water mill (past) on your webpage, we believe if could be Jack Davison does anyone know where the photograph originated, as our great grandfather was the only person in the village to own a horse. Does anyone remember Miss Martin who used to walk her ducks down to the beck every morning.

avrilblack Wednesday, August 17th 2005 - 09:32:10 PM On looking at past and present photographs of Little Crakehall, wondered if anyone knows who has the original photograph of past water mill and also if anyone knows who the gentleman with the horse is, my great grandfather Jack Davison was landlord of Malt Shovel Inn and we think it may be him, if anyone could shed any light we would be grateful. We would also like to know if anyone has any idea where we could find out history of Malt Shovel which at one stage was a Staging Post with blacksmiths at the back. Can anyone remember Miss Martin who used to walk her ducks down to the beck every morning.

norma bellini Thursday, May 12th 2005 - 09:51:59 AM norma.bellini@btinternet.com We have recently spent two days at Watermill House in Crakehall and have nothing but praise for Lionel and Alison, the hosts. We were warmly welcomed, the accommodation and breakfast were beyond reproach. We have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone fortunate enough to be travelling in Yorkshire, neither will we have any hesitation is staying there again.

Jane Greiner Monday, May 2nd 2005 - 09:02:44 PM jane_greiner@hotmail.com Found your web-site interesting.I too am researching my ancestors. My great-great-grandfather,Thomas MITCHELL was born in Crakehall in 1817.His wife was called Marie, she was from Birmingham. His children were:George, born 1846,James Nicholds(my great-grandfather),b1852,Emily,b 1858 and Ernest(an artist) b1860. According to my grandfather,Thomas was bailiff at Crakehall. I believe the Parish records were destroyed by fire.Does anyone know where the Bishop's Transcripts are kept? Does anyone have any more information about this Mitchell family?

Jacki Pamflett Tuesday, June 22nd 2004 - 11:19:18 PM jacpam@hotmail.com Am researching my family history and would be grateful if anyone could assist with information relating to The School House in Crakehall - this was the address for the widow of my great uncle (Thomas Bostle) who died in France in November 1914. The address of his widow Ada Susan Bostle is given as the School House - perhaps they married there or perhaps they may appear in the parish registers? Does the School House still exist and can some kind soul perhaps photograph it for me and any information relating to my family would be gratefully received!
