I started playing horn a few months ago and absolutely love it. It's the first brass instrument I've ever attempted (I'm mostly a woodwind player). I've been wanting to learn mellophone so I could play it in my school's marching band. I got one from the school and now have a nice fingering chart so I can teach myself. Thanks a lot!

Very beautiful site, dedicated to two of the most underrated instruments out there. The fingering charts for french horn are coming extremely useful, though I would be grateful to anyone who could inform me when to begin using the trigger. The other horns tell me that above second line G is where I should use it.
Also, I agree with the other comments on extending the mellophone chart. Most of the marching corps and college bands I've looked at require a chromatic scale from low F# below middle C to C above the staff for their auditions. However, I'm sure that a simple Google search will reveal those few extra high notes.
Thank you for creating this page! The french horn mellophone are truly wonderful instruments to play, and there simply cannot be enough of them around.

I have my grandfather's horns, mellophone and alto horn, and decided I'd try to play them. I played French Horn in the grade school band aeons ago (at my mother's instigation - I wanted to play trumpet).
Years ago I found a picture of my grandfather and great-grandfather in a picture of the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee's band, taken sometime in the 1920s. The photo is on page 88 of North Shore Line Memories. They are in the back row on the left hand side of the photo.
Being a period instrument, I figured it would be cool to learn to play these things, then see if I could join a swing band.

I played the trumpet for 2 years, then I switched to F. Horn. I still play that and now I also play the mello. I am a Normal Community West Marching Wildcat. We are one of the best high school marching bands in the nation. We are playing in the National Championship of Bands at the Fiesta Bowl this December. I'm pretty good.

switched a few instruments when I started band in 7th grade. I started on the trumpet which really helped me out playing the other instruments. I must have switched four or five times until I came across the french horn. It really is the best instrument I've played. Now I'm playing a Bb horn in the Land O' Lakes/Sunlake High School bands and I'm loving it.

Thanks for such a great site! I'm hopefully switching to mellophone next marching season (from percussion, so it'll be tough), and the fingerings have been helping me a lot.
As someone else mentioned, there is an error, though - the first B should be 2, not 1 - and the fourth space E is missing.

I really like your mellophone fingering chart - it's easy to read. I think there's an error in the fingering for the B right below the staff, though. It should be a 2 instead of a 1.

Love your site! >D Yay for horn players!! I'm a senior in high school and switched to French Horn from flute in the middle of my freshman year, best thing I coulda done. I'm a section leader and squad leader in my band though, it's very sad I'm a senior, I'm gonna miss marching band and playing horn ALOT. It's such a great instrument! I just googled mellophone fingerings and found your site! I was wondering what they were like incase I have to play it in college. Very helpful. intermediate high school student looking to advance in the school's music program. problem with playing. i can hit the higher notes or the lower notes with no or very little problem. problem is going between them with out playing a bunch of notes in between (ex:F to E). can anyone e-mail me as to where the problem lies?

I was just checking for some nice pieces to play for horn and stumbled upon your great site. Looks like we got lots in common in the horn world. Im in my schools Wind Ensemble for horn and am trying out for Region Band. We have to tryout on Morceau De Concert, a song I read you did.
