Very beautiful site, dedicated to two of the most underrated instruments out there. The fingering charts for french horn are coming extremely useful, though I would be grateful to anyone who could inform me when to begin using the trigger. The other horns tell me that above second line G is where I should use it.
Also, I agree with the other comments on extending the mellophone chart. Most of the marching corps and college bands I've looked at require a chromatic scale from low F# below middle C to C above the staff for their auditions. However, I'm sure that a simple Google search will reveal those few extra high notes.
Thank you for creating this page! The french horn mellophone are truly wonderful instruments to play, and there simply cannot be enough of them around.

I have my grandfather's horns, mellophone and alto horn, and decided I'd try to play them. I played French Horn in the grade school band aeons ago (at my mother's instigation - I wanted to play trumpet).
Years ago I found a picture of my grandfather and great-grandfather in a picture of the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee's band, taken sometime in the 1920s. The photo is on page 88 of North Shore Line Memories. They are in the back row on the left hand side of the photo.
Being a period instrument, I figured it would be cool to learn to play these things, then see if I could join a swing band.

It's is so much easier than marching with the french horn (but they expect you to play better while marching) I marched for 2 years with the French horn (I wasn't allowed to use the Mellophone). I could not even try to play I had a hard enough time trying to keep in step. Now I get to March with the mellophone and I have to play and am always out of step. GO ROCKETS!!!

switched a few instruments when I started band in 7th grade. I started on the trumpet which really helped me out playing the other instruments. I must have switched four or five times until I came across the french horn. It really is the best instrument I've played. I was just checking for some nice pieces to play for horn and stumbled upon your great site. Looks like we got lots in common in the horn world. Im in my schools Wind Ensemble for horn and am trying out for Region Band. We have to tryout on Morceau De Concert, a song I read you did. Instrument(s):was a former cellist, and pianist, just because I always wanted to play the French horn all of my life, couldn't play when I was young because of a cleft palate that was repaired, and just recently was a former trumpet player.
I just love the french horn and had always dreamed of playing the french horn. And then, it became a reality for me which is something that I always have hopes for. To prove it, I have collected cds of my favorite horn players- Dennis Brain, and Barry Tuckwell and recently picked up Andrew Joy. I currently receive private lessons at the Conservatory of Music and rent the instrument from Union Music of San francisco. I've played music since 5th Grade, joined the Marching Band freshman year and just love it. I was chosen this year to be Drum Minor and attended my first BOA Summer Symposium which was an incredible experience. I decided to take up Mello and need all the help I can get. I guess I'm kind of cheating by putting "trumpet" because all mello players can do trumpet...but hey, I need as much of an ego boost as I can get. I'm going into my Junior year which means SEVEN years of French Horn! It's my 4th year on mello cause I started in the marching band early. Since I am eligible this year, I am going to try my hardest to make All-State in Illinois. Wish me luck! I also (secretly) want to be drum major of the Crimson Express Marching Band (see website above) cause I think it would be fun and the responsibility would be a good challenge. Okay, I've rambled enough. Always stick with horn no matter what... it's a temperamental beast you know!
