Am currently working offshore (oil pipe lay barges), after the company I worked for before went bankrupt. Will be moving to a much quieter place (Goeree-Overflakkee)in August and am leaving the city behind me! Looking for a way to move my English boyfriend over to Holland. Since he works for a daughter company of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch rail company) we are very hopeful! I have discovered that I have roots in Holland after all, so for the time being I am staying put! Hope all is well with everyone. Tuesday, October 19th 2004 - 09:23:53 PM . . . . . Message # 27

I think you introduced me to “the barmy army.” Or something to that effect. It’s all good. Actually you were one of our best footballers, I recall; it’s just we didn’t win any games.
Well, it just takes Mr. Bernard’s re-tire-ment to bring back all these memories, eh? That’s all for now.Monday, August 23rd 2004 - 12:45:50 AM . . . . . Message # 24
Name: steve nojek E-mail address: stephennojek "at" hotmail "dot" com Years at YIS: 82-83 too short! I now live in: SF Message: Hidooooooi! It’s been a long time. I’m thinking just like Fred here; Mr. Bernard’s retirement led me to this site. I’d been wondering what the h*ll happened to this crowd!
(“Aaaii….Kichigai no mizu waaaa….”) Me today: look just like Robert Downey, Jr. (US actor), grown out of my introversion, and incurring about US40K in school loans as I start a master’s degree here in San Francisco. Left my lucrative head-hunting job in Hong Kong to live an authentic life, now on a path-with-heart. Left a honey behind, too, ALMOST got married, but it wasn’t right for us at the time. By now (20 yrs later), I’m confident most of you know this story.
Attn Jeff Zaveloff: Yeah, baby, I CAN say it in Chinese!!!! Woohoo! Would you believe I went back to the Old Country (China) after college and spent EIGHT years there? I polished off my Mandarin, drank a h*ll of a lot of 69-cent / liter Tsingtao beer, had a great, high-paying marketing job in Shanghai for a few years with lots of cigars, French wine, saucy / haughty local women (there’s another stooooory!), survived a few more drenching typhoons, acted in a Chinese movie (probably seen by est. 80M Chinese, I kid-you-not), traveled to India-Phuket-S’pore-Bangkok-Macau-and-many-armpit-corners-of-Asia, spent a gi-normous amount of $$$, collected some antiques, drank a lot of Australian wine (anything from Coonawarra is value), got So, Jeff, I confirm I can say it in Chinese.
I gotta say I don’t feel I lived life to the fullest at age….huh? 14? That year at YIS. It all came later. Any comments to that effect?
Looks like everyone turned out well. Guenter, that climb up Fuji-san is one of my life’s cherished experiences. You stay cool. Also, you beguiled me with computer games (Wizardry) and now I can’t…..stop……playing……haha! Wait, I got a story about Fuji-san. This is SO “Japanese”: Okay, since that great hike up / see sunrise / hike down, I told every Japanese person I met (seriously) that I’d hiked Fuji. Then I’d ask THEM if they hiked Fuji. Nope. I made a dozen Japanese friends since then, and no one’s been up Mt. Fuji. I kept asking Japanese as I’d meet them over the years….then I go to ol’ Yoshi’s birthday party in Hong Kong one year, and there’s this “Japanese cool-guy” there, longish hair, got an edge. Yeah, we’ve seen his type before. He announces to the whole table, with great authority: “Fuji-san is meant to be SEEN----not climbed.” My God, everyone laughed for the next hour or so. And this joke---but it’s real---has been told by me / Yoshi / etc for ages since. So, I don’t annoy Japanese – folk any longer by asking silly gaijin questions. Huh!!

I went to YIS for 1st and 2nd grade only, but I'm amazed at the number of people I run into from Yokohama. I completed my undergrad at A&M and met a guy who went to YIS during Junior High! For the past two years I taught Hiro Morita's son. His mom was our P.E. teacher and he was one of our classmates. It is a small world!
I live in Round Rock, Texas (outside of Austin) with my husband and two dogs. We've been in Texas since we left Yokohama in 1976. I am a Reading specialist, currently taking a break from working on my Ph.D. - I don't know if I'll ever finish!
I hope all is well with everyone and it would be fun to get in touch with some classmates!
Take care!

After Japan I lived in Holland for two years which was a major culture shock but such a blast. Then I spent a year in Switzerland where I actually hooked-up with Hideyo Nishikata and Geunter Spiess. Then a brief stinit in Norway before coming to Florida in '88 to finish college.
I am now married to Karine Kintzel (also lived in Japa from '68 to '86 but went to Sacret Heart) and together we have 2 wonderful kids - Ian (3) and Anya (17 months)! I also have a daughter Haley from a previous marriage. She will be 9 in September ! Where are the years going ??? Well, I would love to hear from as many of you as possible.
I hope everyone is doing great and take care !!

Wow what a blast from the past! So many familiar names.
I've often wondered "whatever happened to . . ." Jeff
Zaveloff, Gert-Jan, Yasu, Yukio, Marianne, Michelle among
others.
After I left in '85 (the same time as the first and only
edition of Jeff Z's 'Devil's Advocate' newsletter came out
to much fanfare ???? ) I completely lost touch with
everyone. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers
those good old days, when riding a 50cc was "cool", and the
consumption of beer and chu-hi's didn't hurt so much the
next morning.
Cheers

you are all doing now. For me, I quit my cushy job as
personnel manager at Holiday Inn a year ago, and traded in
my riches for the simple life of a backpacker (well, still
have my house here in Amsterdam, but rent it out now). I
travelled to Australia and Thailand for 3 months, came back
to NL to do some temping work and left again late last year
to go to Austria and give ski lessons for the season. Had a
wonderful time boarding and skiing, had TONS of snow as you
may have read in the papers, and managed not to get caught
in any avalanches. Now I´m back in Amsterdam, temping again
for a while but will probably set off before too long,
either to work in Sydney for the Olympic Organising
Committee (keeping my fingers crossed for that one!)
otherwise will look for a nice place to finish off my diving
diplomas and teach that for the summer. Tough decisions...
