My curiosity also is related to organized labor that may be employed at the Georgia-Pacific paper mills, and worker issues & opinions.
I am personally boycotting ALL Georgia-Pacific products, due to the Koch Brothers political involvement and contributions that DO NOT reflect support for worker issues and political office-holders in the State of Wisconsin.

Comments:Most Atlantic salmon follow an anadromous fish migration pattern, in that they undergo their greatest feeding and growth in salt water, however adults return to spawn in native freshwater streams where the eggs hatch and juveniles grow through several distinct stages.
Atlantic salmon do not require salt water, however, and numerous examples of fully freshwater ("landlocked") populations of the species exist throughout the Northern Hemisphere. In North America, the landlocked strains are frequently known as ouananiche.

People are idiots when it comes to river pollution! I don't give a **** if they "didn't know" PCBs were harmful back in the day. Don't act stupid, it's common sense! If you are discharging a chemical into a river, it's no good period! Something should have been done about this immediately...but we had to wait 30 years??? Give me a freakin' break! The problem is just that people are lazy and they like to beat around the bush!
Nobody wants to hear that they should stop using this or stop doing that because it is polluting the river. This goes for anything...even the freakin' locks and dams! If I had my way, I would blow them all up and let the rapids flow again. But nobody thinks this way...People beat around the bush so they can keep doing what they like to do. The result is that we never solve the water quality problems. We only take inch by inch steps toward one goal and meanwhile, a new problem arrives!
Thank you Fox River Watch for your agressive efforts!!!!!

Comments:I was just forwarded an article from the Greenbay Press Gazette in regards to your situation. It has a very familiar ring to it. I am part of an organization called the" Tittabawassee River Watch ". TRW for short. We have been embroiled in much the same way as you have been for the past 8 years because of a very high level of contamination of Dioxn, furans and a toxic brew of other contaminates too numerous to mention. Our polluter is Dow Chemical In Midland MI. I am a resident living along this river in the watershed. The amount of river being addressed here is roughly 50 miles and the entire Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. We have a great deal of empathy with you as we have had to endure many of the same calamities created by government both State and National as you have. We just recently had a meeting with the EPA, Region 5 and some representatives from Washington who report directly to Lisa Jackson. What our outcome will be at this time is unclear. But the fact that the EPA halted the SAS that was implamented by the EPA per Dow's dictation was finally a glimmer of hope for us. We have the dictation from Dow to the EPA via FOIA. I didn't read your entire web-site, it is lengthy, but what I did find a little troubling is the fact that the meetings that were being held there as they have been here are always with the offender and the business community. Is there anything being done there to address the protection of the residents that may live along the Fox River directly in harms way should flooding occur or enjoy the simple act of wading in the river? PCBs are nothing to mess with, we have them as well, but for 8 years our governments at ALL levels have continually denied the residents, such as myself, any sort of act of protection from exposure. I do not know if there are any residents there that are involved that have illnesses that may be directly attributed to exposure to your pollution. We do. But it seems to be common practice for our government to marginalize the very people that all the cleanup is designed to protect. The voice of experience.
I am very happy for you that something is finally going to be done to address your crisis. Our's is still being discussed behind closed doors, as usual. We have only been aware of the high level of contamination here for a little over 8 years. But Dow and ALL gevernment agencies were well aware of it for 20 + years prior to that.

Good luck in your future clean-up. I hope all goes well with you. In case you may be interested,we have a web-site also. It is : www.trwnews.net Originally it was trwnews.org, but Dow with it's deep pockets bought the host company of our web-site and turned our original site into a porn site in St. Petersburg Russia. How kind of them.

My best to all. John Taylor, Saginaw MI

Comments:Hi! i am very consern with the mess you are trying to get cleaned up , here on the MAgdalen island Québec,Canada, we inherited , after an environment disaster in 1970 of 200,000 plus fertilising size plastic bags ,of recovered beach spill of crude oil and sand mix strongly contaminated with PCB's, and for almos 40 years now they have been kept buried under our sandy dunes on 80 KM of beaches , the erosion of our beaches have reveled over the years, a few thousand of those bags , some where burned to low temperatures some later taken for safe disposal , but never any serious programs to locate what's left underground , and dig them out.Autorities try very hard to convince us of , the no rush about diging them out , using the dunes damage has an excuse for not doing any thing serious , we have a higher cancer rate here than anywhere in our province 33% higher , and until proven other wise , we suspect those chemicals to be one possible factor even if no official link have been made yet, due to negative water analyses.

we understand your struggle and suport your actions all the way .

When I went to college, my parents lived south of DePere right on the Fox River, in the late 70's for about 4 years, near the old Sanitarium. We had well water. Throughout my teen years, we attended fish frys, fish boils, etc., in Door County and elsewhere in the state.

Good luck with the clean up -- I drove through the area a couple years ago and was amazed at how the town has changed and grown -- in a mostly positive way.

Comments:In response to Kevin's comments from Jan. 5th: While it is wonderful that you and your family feel that you are currently in good health despite frequent fish consumption from upper Green Bay and Lake Michigan, there are several factors to keep in mind.

First, epidemiological studies of PCB effects are based on large populations where a statistically significant increase in health problems occur. This doesn't mean that EVERYONE suffers health effects at low exposures, only that an INCREASED number of people suffer health effects.

Second, you and your family members haven't lived your entire lives yet. Some health effects may not be apparent for decades.

Third, your children may seem fine and normal, but could they have been even healthier or brighter without the fish consumption? A Michigan study of children of mothers who ate large amounts of Lake Michigan fish found that their children had an average IQ loss of 6 points. For a child who would normally be in the high or middle end of the range, this loss would not be noticeable to family members. But it could be a serious loss for a child already bound for the lower end of the intelligence range. On a population-wide basis, a 6-point loss could be serious (perhaps this explains some of the stupidity saturating TV programming these days...)

Fourth, many PCB health effects are subtle, through longterm liver changes, immune system depression, increased diabetes rates, thyroid changes, memory loss, and changes in enzyme levels. Cancer is only one effect.

Fifth, the fish consumption advisories are based on only a handful of chemicals (PCBS, mercury, and a few pesticides). Fox River and Lake Michigan fish contain literally HUNDREDS of chemicals for which no risk calculation has been made. It's unlikely that the additive effects of all these chemicals is beneficial.

Fifth, the cancer risk in lower Green Bay and the Fox River is NOT one in 10,000, it's one in 100 for average (relatively low) consumption of popular sports fish. For those who eat more than the average, the risk is higher. This is SIGNIFICANT. Please don't minimize this risk or encourage anglers to increase their exposures!

While it would be nice to relax and not worry, relaxation won't get the Fox River cleaned up and it won't protect people from consuming dangerous quantities of fish. I would much rather err on the side of caution. If this website seems "imbalanced" perhaps that is because it doesn't include all the corporate propaganda out there that minimizes PCB effects. We focused our information strictly on actual scientific studies of PCB health effects, not corporate spin.

I've been extremely disappointed in the anglers of Northeast Wisconsin. There are literally tens of thousands of fishing license holders here, but they've shown almost ZERO leadership over the past 30 years on the Fox River cleanup issue. Instead, they repeatedly take offense at discussion of PCB health risks. The Fox River is one of the worst polluted rivers in the country, but anglers take no action and focus ALL their efforts on criticizing citizens who ARE trying to improve water quality. Over the years we've had to beg and plead with local fishing clubs to send even ONE representative to hearings on the Fox River cleanup and have been verbally beaten-up many times by them. Anglers seem to be deliberately wearing blinders so they can fish without worry. The scary thing is that they are so determined to ignore the PCBs that they are feeding their innocent children dangerous quantities of fish. They experiment with their children's health.... then they brag about it.

Comments:I'm all for getting rid of or capping PCBs to prevent further entry into Green Bay. That being said, I also believe there's a lot of inaccurate information out there on the health affects of eating Great Lakes fish. I've been eating salmon, trout, perch, smelt, walleye and other species from Lake Michigan and upper Green Bay (Dyckesville to Door County) for more than 30 years. We have a tremendous fishery in Green Bay and Lake Michigan, and while I personally wouldn't yet eat any fish from the Fox River itself, I do enjoy the world-class sport fishery there from time to time.

My family eats fish year-round from Lake Michigan and Green Bay, and I've eaten it often for decades. During the peak summer fishing season, it's at least three times a week. My blood was tested in 1986 and 1991 by the state Division of Health, with no significant accumulation of PCBs. Additionally, my wife and I in 2005 participated in the first mercury testing (hair samples), and both of us despite our year-round love of fish (especially salmon, trout, smelt and yellow perch) had levels way under any level of concern. My wife did not stop eating Great Lakes fish while pregnant (we continued to trim off skin and visible fat, and concentrated on eating perch, steelhead and young salmon). Our three kids weighed 8 lbs., 5 ounces, 10 lbs., 9 ounces and 9 pounds, 10 ounces, and they're very smart with no developmental problems.

I'm not saying to ignore the state consumption advice. I am saying not to live your life in fear of a 1-in-10,000 risk of getting cancer, especially when the national cancer groups say about one in three of us will get some sort of cancer in our lifetimes (making a 1-in-10,000 risk pretty insignificant). There are many health benefits of eating fish. I encourage anyone to do a Web search for more balanced information. Fishing and eating fish are part of a healthy lifestyle. Enjoy!

Comments: There is a definite link between pollution and diabetes. If a person lives on a landfill evolving 150 toxins who can say which one or which combination of toxins is the cause for toxin-induced diabetes (down-regulate GLUT-4)? The answer to this question is what I'm currently researching. I have chosen Fox River as one of my models.

Sincerely,

Comments:My father, William Farin was founder of Marathon Engineering in Menasha and presented a paper in 1999 to the DNR and EPA an approach similar to that taken by Minergy in their Sedement Melter Demonstration project funded by the DNR and EPA. Dad's claim to fame was developing systems that helped paper mills comply with the Clean Air act in the 70s. He passed this year.

My daughter is doing a project on the Fox River cleanup as part of a Verona High school project. I hoped there would be some material on the subject on the web. Imagine my delight when your site popped up at the top of the list.

Needless to say I am in full support of the stance you have taken. Having grown up in the paper industry and in Neenah, I have vivid recollections of fishing on the Fox River as a child in the mid-50s through 1963 when the middle of the river was almost white from paper mill discharges. I guess I was part of the problem as I worked in the old Marathon plant on the Island while attending the UW.

It's really too bad we rejected a process that removed 99.9995% of PCBs in river contaminants as opposed to land filling or capping the contaminates in place, preserving the problem for future generations because the short-term cost of covering it up is lower.

Sort of reminds me of a cat covering its poop in a litter box. Smells about the same too.

I am 66 yrs old, worked in a paper converting plant in Richmond B.C. for 30 years. 18 mos, ago I was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, not hereditary, I started to think about all the chemicals I was exposed to growing up. The fields were arial sprayed with various insecticides and pesticides this would eventually end up in our food chain and our houses, drifting with the wind. We also used Flytox and the biggy DDT, both these were sprayed in the home and dairy barn. People didn't know better then, I would hope the know better now or is it too late. I am happy there are some Watch Dogs out there now because all us people with Parkinsons don't like what we have. And it's costing billions.

Mental diseases are on alarming rise these days!!!!!! Reasons:: fast paced life style, loss of general society values, rise of individual focus etc. Its sad to see the downfall of humen. The deep chasm between the materilaistic growth and spiritual growth is surely the main reason for all this. There are so called medicines like Xanax, valium, prozac which may probably help give temporary releif to patients suffering from mental ailments. (try visting http://www.buy-xanax-online-now.com if u want them at cheap rates). But does the answer really lie in these medicines??? I read your message in the 'Anniston Star discussion' and I know that it was posted over a year ago, but I refused to buy a newspaper that ignored a 'major health crisis' of the city of Anniston. Today I subscribed to the online version and was a little disappointed that very few people in Anniston have any thing to say. At the present I'm in Memphis Tn. I had to leave Anniston in Jan 2004 to breathe better and to at least get medical treatment from a dr that I know. The drs in Anniston refuse to acknowledge that pcbs have any thing to do with the illnesses there, they will treat you but with long handel spoon and the attitude of ' get a life ' So much for that, now. I've lived in Memphis for 12 years, but moved to Anniston again 2 years ago and back here now. So as I said before contact me anytime, because I'm back and forth, my mom and the rest of my family lives there. If you want to keep in touch and help each other with information, email me and I'll send my telephone numbers and address. Love is the law, Sakinah.

Comments:Interesting site. We're having the same fight in the upper Hudson Valley where GE has had a major spill into the Hudson River by Albany. There is a very strong movement to dredge the Hudson but no one has determined, or has been able to decide what to do with, the sledge once its been dredged up.

Check the site http://www.clearwater.org/ for environmental action that's happening here.

Comments:There is a great deal of useful information on your site. The fact of the papermills causing a lot of pollution in particular areas arouses my curiousity of why it seems that a large number of people also get cancer in my home town of Tyrone, Pa. There seems to be a more substantial amount of people that develope health related issues there. And there is a papermill right beside the river.

Comments:I stumbled across this site while doing a little research on PCB's. It seems I came into contact with some PCB's about a week ago while working. I work for SBC, the phone company here. I climbed a utility pole and had an oily substance all over my hands before I noticed the old power company transformer leaking oil up above. I'm am trying to find out if I need to be tested in some way, or if there are any other precautions I need to take. Our company publications basically say. Wash your hands and everything will be allright. The power company called and offered to buy my clothes. If anyone has any input on this subject please contact me at the email address above

Comments:I'm glad to know that there's such a worry to keep clean rivers and lakes from contamination, which is the every day action of most enterprises, which in spite to produce goods and other needed products for the dayly surviving we are addapted now, they feed the water streams of pollution. lte's make concious on this matter for havein a better world for the future.
