As for buying a M6...one must eat first.

Comments:Very nicely done site - it's a pleasure to see (and read) information that speaks for the Leica name in an unbiased fashion. I became familiar with my fathers' screw-mount system when I was 6 years young - when he and mother would go out on the town! - I would carefully sneak out the chest from the closet! I was ruined for life! To feel those controls and precision at such an age - how lucky I was!

Years and many 'Instamatic' photos later, I purchased an SL2mot and much other equipment, freelancing for a while and now shooting a couple of culture projects of the Upper Midwest. I've an R8 now and look forward to an R9 with the new 21-35 f/4 Elmar. Leicas are an investment that can confound the wallet but, it is absolutely undeniable that Leicas allow the photographer a new gift of sight.

See well, Rex

Comments:Hello Pascal, dear LFI readers,
just a moment ago I found Pascals comment on LUG web saying:

"The article on the 280/4.0 lens by Mark Brandenburgh was, however, full of common places and hardly a test report compared to the high standards of e.g. Erwin's reports."

Now let me make some few remarks to lift a missunderstanding obviously being in the air: my articles were never intended to be something like a "test report" but a "lens school". I was never asked to write a test and also I do not want to
interfear with Erwin Puts excellent work testing lenses. Readers interested in lens reports are kindly asked to look out for reports written by Erwin Puts. No doubts, I am also looking out to read his next article.

However, the subject of my work is a different item. The intention with the lens school is much more to give practical hints how to use the equipment in daily
work than much less offering testing results. Thus, a lens school should be understandable for Leica newcommers as much as containing hints even usefull for professionals. Every single article is furthermore designed the become one
article out of a long sequence of articles. The full spectra of my practical hints will hopefully become obvious for the reader only after many more articles to come. As a natural consequence out of this concept, the highskilled readers
might find informations in my articles that might look very evident, or saying with your negative words: they might look like "common places". Other readers enjoy reading the lens school because the content comes out of the photographic practice written with little technical overload (technical data and mathematical graphs). My articles are simply not intended to be in competition to Erwin Puts work but ment to be a supplement!

Thank you very much for your serious concern about the content of Leica magazine. As a freelance author and a freelance photographer I am always keen to make the next article to become even better. Please feel free to send me your honest but constructive comments upon my work. Let's built to the perfect magazine toghether. Thanks!

all the best whishes

Comments: I like your site very much, unfortunately; I am shooting with a Minilux zoom at the moment, and I haven't found a site on the web deditcated to this camera. I found a lot about the minilux 40mm single lens, but nothing about the minizoom. If you in the future find a site dedicated to my camera would please let me know?
I did have an RE with a 50mm summilux 1.4 but it got stolen from me. I also have a Summicron 50mm f/2 that I shoot with an Eos 2000, but due to the viewfinder being too dimmed, I don't use it very much. I'm waiting until I can get the R7 and then I'll shoot more with it. I'm not too much of a friend of the totally manual cameras, that's why I want the R7 so I can use its program mode and all I have to do is focus.
Thank you, and keep updating this site, its great.

Comments: The optical chain of excellence - because a chain is only
as strong as its weakest link, Really? Well read on me old
son!

I read your comments on Leica Lens production with depair!
I really do feel you are missing the point here. When I
purchased my first Leica Camera (the R3) at the beginning
of the 1970s the so called “Standard Lens” was a 50mm. I
chose Leica because of their reputation, which they
vigorously promoted, of having lenses which were of a
standard which represented “optical excellence” and that
Leica held a position that was perhaps the benchmark which
other camera manufacturers could not achieve, at that time
it was certainly true in my view. However, today things are
now completely different, Leica now import’s designs for a
number of their lenses (I am referring to the smaller
aperture zooms) and no longer represents an example
of “optical excellence” which ALL Leica lenses were
historically known for. When I purchased two zooms (35-70 &
70-210) back in the 1980s, I did NOT chose the Leica
offering because they were inferior in optical design and
performance, compared to the equivalent designs by
ANGENIEUX, this was indeed confirmed by more than just one
test report. In the recent past I wanted a 28-70mm zoom and
refused to buy the so called “Leica lens”, which was of
course a SIGMA with a few leica suggestions as a ‘tarting-
up’ exercise, and incidentally was Lambasted for its poor
design in at least one major photographic magazine to my
knowledge (the later Kyocera 28-70 is an improvement). I’m
afraid its just no good saying the lens was built to
complement the RE and therefore made on the cheep, Leica
want to be known for excellence in optics and promote that
image at EVERY opportunity.
Other manufacturers now produce lenses which are the equal
if not superior to a number of Leica lenses, Tokina,
Tamron, and yes, even SIGMA are now getting their act
together. And as for Nikon and Canon, some (not all) of
their lenses must surely now represent the pinnacle of
optical design within any give price constrain.

Regards,

Terry
