| Comments: | Stumbled across your website and really appreciated the clear information in the articles "Child and Youth Care Workers, 3rd Class Citizens" and "Identity v.s. Identity Confusion". So good to see the distinguishing feature of Child and Youth Care work being a focus on relationships and so agree with how Child and Youth Care workers are implementing the essentials of relationship building incorporating many many different theoretical models. | Comments: | Love the site. And as a B.C.'er who struggles to keep a position in the field, I'd like to remind Albertan Child and Youth Care Workers how great you have it in some ways. The future of Child and Youth Care Workers/Counselors in B.C. (well Kelowna anyway) is very dismal. Services to Youth and Families (whether through the Ministry for Child and Family Development or Human Resources) are being cut to unbelievable depths. The jobs we are all used to in the field will soon be transferred to Social Workers. In this area, contracted agencies are being cut back and contracted individuals are being laid off. But there's really no-one to talk to about it. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to join the B.C. Association for over four years with no responce. There does not appear to be any sort of support in this region, and our jobs are not held in regard.
So when you hear someone ask, "what is the point of joining the C.Y.C.A.A.?", tell them to call or write me. The C.Y.C.A.A. was and is, one of the best things to happen in the field in many years. 700+ members!! Keep up the excellent work. |

I'd like to respond to your question publically. The simple explaination to your question is that we can't push for more fair wages for private agencies. Well, not yet anyway. Although we are a large agency (if you call less than 1/3 of all possible practitioners large. Collectively, we do not have any power over what the agencies set for wages. The cycaa was designed to promote professionalisation, not wage bargaining. The union has two things going for them 1) manditory membership for all governement workers and 2) bargaining power. The cycaa was never designed to have either. If we can get legislation to pass, then we will conquor one of those items. If we have that power, maybe then we can start getting its members fair wages. My question to you is.. Are you a member? and if not, what have you done to increase the strength of the association so that we can help you get fair wages? To all the members, make sure you read the article re membership in a cyc assoc., in the last national newsletter [you received it with your renewal notice]. And then encourage as many people as you know to read it and buy membership. The CYCAA needs more members to , and more people to get involved- wouldn't it be nice if fresh, non- exhausted cyc's could continue Wayne & co.'s work on the professional push? Gee, a recent study made the astute observation that CYC's are underpaid, and feel unappreciated. The only way we will ever be paid close to what we should is if we get this legislation passed--but don't instead of whining, how about doing something about it? Join the legislation committee! Is the CYCAA sending anyone to the conference in Cleveland? I noticed that a group from Texas is presenting on a Certification progam. We should have a booth set up and flog our new Certification manual-- afterall, it is the premiere progam in North America! [Jack Phelan confirmed this in his observations!] I am looking forward to a provincial cyc conference- the last one I recall was in Red Deer, and too much fun! Is there a committee set up to put a conference on? Sign me up! Even though I am no longer a practicing cyc, I look forward to the newsletters, and opportunities for professional development in the field. And I will be paying my certification dues probably till death! Keep up the hard work, everyone! Sue Turner |
