'ow are ya. having recently relocated to the west coast of ireland with former mumbles rfc stalwort, claypole, we began to heartily tuck in to a a pack of peanut m&m's that your good self had sold to me the tuesday previous. on closer inspection we found the date stamped on the side of the bag to have passed the week beforehand. whats the score? mumbles rfc has always been known for its large array of snacks in prime condition. are things slipping? i'm willing to let this incident slide however, as having finished the pack of mouldy delights, i stumbled upon a coveted 'golden ticket' signed by willy wonka. claypole and myself were obviously overjoyed at such a find and are off to enjoy the delights of his chocolate factory, just outside ponypridd on tuesday. so long suckers. dan & matt.

I write about the unfortunate incident that occured on this Saturday gone following the Welsh match with the Pacific Islands.

Never before in my 20 years of bus driving and 10 years touring with the Fun Loving Criminals have I witnessed such a drunk bus.

I understand due to driver/passenger confidentiality I am unable to reveal the nature of my complaints but would like to issue the following rules for following trips.

1. No Ginger fat props allowed
2. Big Second Rows only allowed on bus if Brother B is willing to take all responsibility for looking after said Second Row
3. Silverbacks only allowed on bus if accompanied by a large box of tissues
4. Should any players need to rush to hospital on route, they are unable to take refreshments with them for consumption in waiting rooms
5. When a trip is organised to go watch the rugby, can all passengers please ensure they actually watch the rugby
6. Please bring your own coats home

I would request all people consult these rules before any further trips.

Yours

Tony

The Battle of Sudbury Hill 1952.

Back in those almost forgotten days when England and Wales took their rugby seriously, it was traditional that Welsh clubs travelled up to Twickenham, usually by coach, to watch the big match, England versus Wales in the afternoon. So as to make the most of the occasion they would find a local English side to play in the morning. My English club was Lyons, a huge food producing company who had a first class sports facility for their employees which was at Sudbury Hill in North West London. We were to play Mumbles which we were given to believe by the Welsh captain was the very finest of all the cities in that glorious land. A city of spires, poets, singers and boasting the finest rugby club in the principality.

As we welcomed the Mumbles team and their families it became obvious that they were a man short of a full team, what to do? I was really impressed with the speed, my English captain, regardless of the cost to his teams chances of victory immediately chose me to be the chosen one to play in a Welsh shirt, generosity and English decency at their best as he handed me over. Mumbles were not to come second lightly after they had seen me. Why should they take their opponents best man when, if rules allowed one of their aunties or sisters could take the field? But alas for the English these were the days of sexism; it was Jack Shaw or nothing.

Truth be told I do believe my old skipper was jealous of me, even though my name was Jack in a side full of name like Jeremy, Christopher, Quinton and Justin which made me sound a trifle down market, I was filled to the brim with English rugby football courtesies. For example when playing on the wing I would call,” Please Christopher”, before he passed the ball to me, then stop to thank him before
playing on. Courtesy costs nothing but adds a little culture to the game I alway found.

As I look back on the day that I became a Welsh hero I find that history has become warped as to how it all happened, for example there are descriptions of me, especially common around my spiritual home, Mumbles, that I had girded on my fathers sword and had a wild harp slung behind me. That is just so not me at all, in truth along with my love of politeness on the field I also found that appearance maketh the man. I found that polished boots so much more becoming that that crude dubbin stuff some of the more common types like to plaster all over their boots. For football pads I had a paper back copy of Lorna Doone and the other one Little Women neatly put under my nicely turned down at the top socks. Alas with declining standards it is no longer fashionable to starch then crease one football shorts. As I had no control over the un-ironed Mumbles shirt I took especial care over neatly parting and styling my hair, adjusted my spectacles and I was ready for the field.

My new country’s captain put me at the end of our line of three quarters. So as to appear sociable I gave a shy little Mexico wave with my fingers to my new chums.
I was rather surprised the way that some of my team mates had an only a loose grasp of the Welsh language as I heard mutterings of,”Ynfytyn or ffwl with cieliog dandi”, which roughly equates to foolish fop which of course was the last thing they meant.

I quickly realised that our side were desperately low on moral, they were clearly shaken that they were to play on dry grass, an almost unknown condition of pitch, they were after all from Mumbles where the common folklore has it that as you look over Swansea Bay at the Gower peninsular, if you can see Mumbles head it is going to rain. If you can not see it, it is already raining. I shouted loudly to our chaps, “Play up Mumbles and play the game”. This had an immediate effect as the whole team slowly raised their eyebrows and rolled the eyes into their heads to show lifting spirits. Indeed I would have cried,”Follow me” if I had not been at the very end of the line of threes. Alone and still immaculate though the game was starting to harden into a very tough fighting forward game and if ever the ball passed down our line of threes it always stopped before being passed to me. Clearly the chaps were saving me for a great moment. I have to say I looked superb, so I took the moment to strike an inspiring pose. Give the chaps another lift.

The battle continued through both halves, hard fought by both sides, exhaustion was clearly showing, men were getting weaker and weaker, the score drawn at 14 each. I was still a credit to the turnout of our side, my hair still had the cheeky little curl over my youthful forehead, my beautiful starched shorts untainted by grass or mud stains as I had not touched the ball all through-out the slaughter. As every one of my team-mates was sensing full time approaching and they were almost out of fight I, having been blessed with a wonderful singing voice, gave thought to a quick rendering of “Men of Harlech”, but the on reflection decided the lads were too out of breath to join in the chorus. Suddenly the ball was cleared from a scrum and started its journey down the Welsh line of threes until the winger prior to me found that he had no where to go, so in desperation he passed a nice polite slow moving ball which I caught without even fumbling. The 87th minute and I was pre-match fresh I simply dodged around the ashen faced often fallen Saxons. I even managed to do a perfect, with pike, in my graceful dive over the line. A Welsh Hero was born.

In the bar later the chaps promised me that as soon as they returned to their city of spires, poets and singers, not to mention The Mumbles Rugby Football Club they intended to commission a statue, carved in coal , of their inspirational turncoat match winner in one of my finest poses.

That afternoon Wales won at Twickenham 8 - 6 after starting as underdogs. Glory was ours. Indeed the day of my game is often, rightly described as Wales golden period.

The only sad note of the day was that Clive, my Lyons captain never spoke to me again.

Jack Shaw.

Gulf snatch dramatic qualifying win over China

11/11/2005

The Arabian Gulf clinched a dramatic late win over China at the Dubai Exiles on Friday to secure further World Cup qualification games next year against Japan and Korea.

The match appeared all over when China took the lead in injury time thanks to a kick and chase try from replacement Chen Jian Chun to go 22-19 ahead.

But the Gulf showed superb spirit to snatch victory with the final move of the match, winger James Tometzki squeezing over in the corner after good work by veteran full-back Rob Subbiani.

The score sparked great scenes of celebration at the final whistle, with the Gulf keeping alive their ambitious hope of qualifying for the 2007 World Cup.

For much of the second half, China dominated possession and appeared in control of the game. But the Gulf, cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of 1,500, kept playing to the final whistle and were rewarded for their efforts.

The first points of the game came from Gulf fly-half Sebastian Mouchet who landed a 30-metre penalty.

China replied with a try from lock Ma Bing from a line out before Gulf flanker Marcus Smith muscled over from close range to make it 8-5 to the home side.

Li Yang then chased a kick ahead to claim a try which put China 12-8 ahead only for Mouchet to make it 11-12 at the break with a penalty.

Comments:I was poking around different rugby web-sites and thought I would look up your team. Well, I found it. I played against you guys many years ago when the Dallas RFC toured there along with our coach,Peter Raven, a former Saracens fullback. It was a great time, but too bad you lost the yard chugging contest. However, you did win the game! Regards, Lane

Comments:Dear all players,
For those who dont know, the players dinner will be held on Fri 25th Nov at the club. Tickets cost £20 (Max of 60 available) and for that we can enjoy a comedian and a lovely sit down meal prepared by Julie and Clare and a S*** load of beer most probably. I have tickets, JR and the Mexican have them to sell, so get them fast.

PS, Alex Wilkins, I do not accept 5 pences, 2 pences or 1ps.

I KNOW YOU HAVE PLAYERS TO PAY IN LOUGHOUR WITH YOUR NEW RUGBY REGIME TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP BUT COME ON BOYS FOLLOW THE OTHER CLUBS AROUND YOU WITH SOME HARD WORK ON THE TRAINING PADDOCK AND SOME HOME GROWN LOCAL TALENT WHO WANT TO PLAY LOUGHOR NOT THE MONEY.

I HOPE THE WRU DON'T TAKE ACTION BUT IF THEY DON'T TAKE THIS A HARD LESSON LEARNED KEVIN LEWIS (YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER)

Comments:With referance to the understandable concern shown by our supporters, management and players I would like to report that James is Ok.
After intensive investigations using x-ray and MRI James is fine apart from suspected ligament damage around the cirvical spine. He is currently wearing a collar for a few weeks and it is hoped the ligaments will heal naturally and an operation will not be neccesary.Good Luck James from all at MRFC

THE MUMBLES MASSIVE AREN'T SO MASSIVE ANYMORE AFTER THEY POOREST START TO THE SEASON SINCE THE WINTER OF 72 HOWEVER LOUGHOR ARE COMPLETELY THE OPPOSITE OFF TO A FLYING START MUST BE THE NEW MANAGEMENT TEAM AND PETER DAVIES AND HIS COACHING STAFF.
