Comments:I had the pleasure of being in Edzell '84 - '88 as a contractor. After Edzell I ran into Chief Lucky from TEBO in Denver. I later ran into Bob Kelley, Chief Lee xxxx, and Scott Atchinson at Menwith Hill '96 - 2002. Had a great time everywhere I was stationed. My wife helped set up the menu at Roos Leap in Edzell. From Menwith it was a final tour in Colombia before retiring back to LA after 35 years on the road.

If I had it to do over again it would have been Navy all the way. I got married out of high school and didn't know my wife and I could have enlisted as a team.

We are planning on visiting the UK next year in time for the snooker matches and will take the train up to Montrose for a couple days.

Drop me a line. Would be great hearing from you.

It was a great duty site. I went from there to the USS
Independence.
I was involved with youth baseball and Webelos Scouts.
I also directed a drama at the base chapel. I enjoyed
hillwalking and bowling. The scenery was terrific. But
the best part were the people.

I still remember Captain Thomas. He was an awesome commanding officer. I remember walking across the base
and as he passed in his car I saluted. In his typical
manner he just waved back.

I'd love to hear from others who were there during the
same time period. I am still in contact with Mrs. Alfie
Leonard who lives in Brechin. Her husband and I became
friends when he worked at the base bowling alley.

Cherrio for now,
Duane Walter

Comments:Howdy All! I worked in 32 Division, Section 1 with Sam Null, Tom Kirk, Sheila Mitchell, Joe Curl, Sam & Patti Thompson, Malcolm Cook, Mary Conery, Charlie Pride, Rob Gagnon, Jennifer Blanc, Terri Durr, Sue Palmeri, and lived above the Steak House in Brechin with Frank Mitchell and Joe Boogren. I know there are many more names I should remember, but I'll blame the mental lapse on some pretty awesome mojo parties, and exposure from standing out on the runway in February at 0400 waiting for the damn doughnut truck, after completing a BFO microdial survey and trailing a 4' long paper tape tail out the door...

I retired in June of '99. I took my wife on vacation to Scotland two summers ago. Spent a week around Lock Ness, and a week in Edzell. Very bittersweet standing in my old barracks room and on a nearly deserted High Street in Brechin in the middle of a weekday.

Comments:It wasn't my initial intention to have the distinction of being the last enlisted man stationed at NSGA Edzell.
In case anyone should ask, "What about HM3 Adam Caudell?" he has the distinction of being the last man attached to the Branch Medical Clinic.
With the possible exception of those who might be attached to a British command on the Personnel Exchange Program, Adam and I are the last American enlisted men posted Scotland.
On the morning of 30 September 1997, when the flags were hauled down for the last time, the only active duty military personnel left at RAF Edzell, were:
LCDR Sharon Chandless, USN
LT Sean McLaren, USN
LT Thomas George, CEC, USN
LT "Buzz" Hummer, CHC, USNR
CWO3 Kenneth C. Jones, SC, USN
HM3 Adam Caudell, USN
Squadron Leader Stephen J. Bowen, RAF
and last and maybe the least, myself.
The last uniformed personnel on base, were the Pinkerton Security officers, who took over as we left.
If anyone has been back to Edzell since, I'd love to know what has become of the base.

Retired from the reserves in 1998 as a CTM1 in Orlando Florida.

Missed the closure, found out about it well after the fact from some "Brits" wearing RAF Edzell ballcaps at the Burger King on Ramstien AFB.

Looking for a "good" excuse to drive the family to Edzell from my current location in Stuttgart Germany.

Is there anything remaining of the old facilities?

People and landscape. The Blue Door, the Shaking Bridge, Cairn O'Mount, etc. Man, those were the days! Was hoping that it would turn into a PCS but no such luck. I believe that there were less than 50 sailors on board when I transferred. Sure wish I could see it again.

bruise in all my life. Enjoyed the Edinburgh Tatoo and plan
to revisit Scotland in 2003 with my family. My golfing son
and I plan to play a round or two at the links. Edzell was
the greatest duty station in the Navy. What was the name
of the pub in Montrose? Had my first beer there as an
eighteen year old.
