I’m trying to find out a bit about an ancestor of mine William Dalloway [various spellings] who was born around 1730 – 1740 in Sussex, probably in the East Hoathley/Buxted/Little Horsted area. I have some notes written by my great grandfather George Herbert [1842 – 1926] circa 1923, which outlines the Dolloway/Dalloway/Dallaway relations. ‘Our family connections include an Uncle of my Grandfather named William Dallaway who as a Customs or Revenue Officer held a roving commission in the Counties of Sussex, Surrey and Kent, especially on all roads from the coast to London and other inland towns.’ In addition his will left ‘The miniature in gold mount of William Dolloway a great Uncle on my Mothers side’ to my grandfather, and it is still in the family. George’s mother was Sarah Brinkhurst [1809 – 1901], and her grandmother was Ann Dolloway who married Benjamin Brinkhurst on 14 April 1762 in East Hoathley. She was born 29 June 1734 also in East Hoathley. Any help you could provide would be very welcome. Regards, Richard Herbert. |

My paternal great grandmother was Mary Ann Dallaway, born Lucton, Kingsland Herefords on 19 July 1848. She was the eldest daughter of John Dallaway, a miller born Kingsland Herefordshire c 1818. John Dallaway married Mary Elizabeth Page, formerly Newman in the Parish of Stoddesdon & Farlow Shropshire/Herefords on 19th Sept 1844. Mary Ann had 2 sisters Emma and Sarah Elizabeth.
Mary Ann Dallaway married my Great Grandfather George Price. He was the village blacksmith in Cleobury North Shropshire . They had 6 children, one of whom was my grandfather Albert Price, who later became the village postmaster for about 50 years. I would be most interested to hear from anyone who knows of or is related to Mary Ann's family. Thanks for all the information of your website. I attach a photo of Mary Ann Price (nee Dallaway) in later years.She died on 30 May 1934 in Madely in the county of Shropshire and is interred in Cleobury North churchyard with her husband George Price. Some time ago I got back to a great x 3 grandmother called Mary Dallaway from Heathfield/Warbleton in Sussex, and then through a contact at Genes Reunited found your website, which is wonderful. So much information in one place was a real find, and I am so grateful, and pleased to have finally found that that elusive piece of oral history was correct! We all still live in the West Midlands. I have no children but my brother David has one son John Dallaway who is now 26. This is a facinating site. I had no idea my family dated back so far. In terms of documenting history, my father Samuel was a WW2 spitfire pilot with loads of memorabilia including his flight log and loads of photos taken between 1940-45. | Comments: | My ancestor was Moses Dallaway, a builder in Bristol during the 18th & 19th centuries. He lived to 98 but I can't trace his origins. He was born 1722. I do have data on Dallaways from Littledean in Gloucester including sons and fathers with the name Moses.
Moses's daughter married a John Gillard and the name Dallaway has been used as middle name up to the present day in this line. Family stories say that he lived in Blaise Castle near Bristol but I can't prove this. |

For family tracers: my father was the Stanley J born 1907 Devonport (see Ian's list of births) but my mother was his second wife, Florence, not the the first mentioned in that list. He also had two children by his third wife, Bunty Spence: Jane in 1968 and Oliver in 1969--my half-sister and -brother, whom I met once!
