My favorite is the BRINDLE!! I had a brindle G. Dane when I was younger always loved the color.

I think dog people should get together and start capitalizing the name of a specific breed or type dog. For example in English, Mastiff, if you mean Old English Mastiff, in Spanish Mastin, if you mean Spanish Mastiff. (m)astiff with the small letter should be used to refer to any breed in which the females exceed 110 to 120 lbs., i.e. larger than the usual big Grey wolf. Also, I think we are making a mistake to take the Mastiff larger than a lean 165 #, give or take 10-15# and 29" and males larger than a lean 185# give or take 15 to 20# and 35" maximum at withers. Dogs larger than this age early, grow too fast, have worse arthritis. Power and agility can be emphasized. These wts. are giant dogs and in nature no canid remains, including the Dire Wolf, has had consistent sizes has been found larger than this in the last 30, 000 years. Ordinarily, the largest Northern Grey Wolf male will be about 120# @ 29". The Dire Wolf differed only by having heavier bone, living at a more southern lattitude. They possibly went extinct with large slow prey. The Buffalo Grey Wolf are claimed to have been the largest Grey Wolves but I've been unable to find substantiation of skeletons from the Great Plains of North America to support the claims that they exceeded 200#. At that size, they'd be too slow to keep up with the pack and run down a North American bison. Please write, if you know of substantiation, from skeletal remains or animals weighed on true scales. The claims that there were Afghan mastiffs larger than Mastiffs have been disproved. |
