So much of " they are not recognize". Honestly...let's think about it. WHO REALLY CARES?? Honestly, does a Prince Hall Mason in Georgia care if a Grand lodge somewhere in England recognize him or not? I know I don't.I see so much of this in Texas. You Have Grand Masters from different Grand Lodges here acting like Entered Appentices. It is SAD!Fighting, back biting,OMG! And the OES is following too. You Have Grand Matrons here in Texas writing their own rule books on the OES. POWER HUNGRY. I was at a Masonic Fuction (PHA) earlier this year, and witness the most embarassing act of idiotcy. There was this young man selling T-shirts and other masonic merchandise. The young man had a shirt that had the word "FATAL" on it just like the car emble,lapel pin,OES FEZ,etc,etc. This Grand Matron made such a scene about it, I just couldn't believe it.With all the Power invested in her mind she told that brother that he couldn't sell that shirt nowhere in Texas. WOW!!! When did she started dictating who can sell what in texas. Maybe he can't sell it to her members, but I bet he can to the other 11 affiliation 22,000 members in Houston and in Texas. But it's funny she had a crown with the same letters on it. That's a "man in the mirror" moment. I think because of EGO's, MONEY, and POWER...Black freemasonry in America will never come together. Maybe in my son's lifetime.But what I don't understand...if Prince Hall Masonry emancipated itself from England in 1826, why are we trying SO HARD to be recognize by them today...I just don't get it. Maybe that is why white mainstream doesn't recognize PHA or PHO or black masonry as a whole because of that fact. Just a thought!! |

| Comments: | Thanks for the read. I just recently had two brothers visit my lodge for a third degree. Their lodge name was announced but when their Grand Lodge was revealed, John G. Jones, it was reported that they were not recognized by the Grand Lodge of California/ Prince Hall lodges of California. I was in utter shock, due to my ignorance of Prince Hall lodges vs. John G Jones- I was advised not communicate Masonry with these men hereafter- but they are good people nonetheless- I feel bad, but that is the CMC we have to follow. Dont know what to tell these brothers when I see them at work. Thanks again!. |

| Comments: | It's funny how men fall out and split a beautiful organization down the middle, and some continued to fuel that rift over the years with animosity, hate and untruths as learned racism tried to do to the Civel Rights Movement. Freemasonry is much bigger than that. I posted some information befor this post so that the profane can see for their selfs where black Masonry came from and what the beef is really about. Nothing! Ego's and who wants to be in cgarge. I don't have to fly the plane, just as long as I'm on the plane. They can now make a good sound decision on werther or not to join the craft and understand that we are all decendants of those 15 men of color that where raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason. No one man is bigger than the craft. PH Masonry has nothing to do with Prince Hall the man. It's still Freemasonry. Ever wonder why the British made those men of color Masons in the first place? Could it be that they knew how whites felt about blacks in those times. They knew that war was coming and they did it to get back at them? Free Born, is that the same as buying your freedom. Oh, I never said Prince Hall was a slave or a Bonds man so don't get it twisted. I take nothing away from the man Prince Hall. We was deserving and worthy to be Praised for all that he did and stood for in those times. How he did it without getting lynched is beyond me. Maybe his skin color had something to do with it. I don't get into ones political agenda. We don't even talk about that in the craft. It's unmasonic anyway. Why didn't the brothers speak up in 1895? No brother should have let matters get to the point of a split and then walk out the door mad. You resolve your differences within the hall, shake hands and it's not brought back up outside the hall. | Comments: | Prince Hall is recognized as the Father of Black Masonry in the United States. Historically, he made it possible for Negroes to be recognized and enjoy all privileges of free and accepted masonry.
Many rumors of the birth of Prince Hall have arisen. A few records and papers have been found of him in Barbados where it was rumored that he was born in 1748, but no record of birth by church or by state, has been found there, and none in Boston. All 11 countries were searched and churches with baptismal records were examined without finding the name of Prince Hall. One widely circulated rumor states that “Prince Hall was free born in British West Indies. His father, Thomas Prince Hall, was an Englishman and his mother a free colored woman of French extraction. In 1765 he worked his passage on a ship to Boston, where he worked as a leather worker, a trade learned from his father. During this time he married Sarah Ritchery. Shortly after their marriage, she died at the age of 24. Eight years later he had acquired real estate and was qualified to vote. Prince Hall also pressed John Hancock to be allowed to join the Continental Army and was one of a few blacks who fought at the battle of Bunker Hill. Religiously inclined, he later became a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church with a charge in Cambridge and fought for the abolition of slavery.” Some accounts are paraphrased from the generally discredited Grimshaw book of 1903. Free Masonry among Black men began during the War of Independence, when Prince Hall and fourteen other free black men were initiated into Lodge # 441, Irish Constitution, attached to the 38th Regiment of Foot, British Army Garrisoned at Castle Williams (now Fort Independence) Boston Harbor on March 6, 1775. The Master of the Lodge was Sergeant John Batt. Along with Prince Hall, the other newly made masons were Cyrus Johnson, Bueston Slinger, Prince Rees, John Canton, Peter Freeman, Benjamin Tiler, Duff Ruform, Thomas Santerson, Prince Rayden, Cato Spain, Boston Smith, Peter Best, Forten Howard and Richard Titley. When the British Army left Boston, this Lodge, # 441, granted Prince Hall and his brethren authority to meet as a lodge, to go in procession on Saints John Day, and as a Lodge to bury their dead; but they could not confer degrees nor perform any other Masonic “work”. For nine years these brethren, together with others who had received their degrees elsewhere, assembled and enjoyed their limited privileges as Masons. Finally in March 2, 1784, Prince Hall petitioned the Grand Lodge of England, through a Worshipful Master of a subordinate Lodge in London (William Moody of Brotherly Love Lodge # 55) for a warrant or charter. The warrant was granted on September 29, 1784 under the name of African Lodge, # 459 on the register of the Grand Lodge of England by authority of then Grand Master, the Duke of Cumberland, delivered in Boston on April 29, 1787 by Captain James Scott, brother-in-law of John Hancock and Master of the Neptune. Prince Hall was the first Master of the lodge which was organized one week later, May 6, 1787. The warrant to African Lodge # 459 of Boston is the most significant and highly prized document known to the Prince Hall Masonic Fraternity. Through it, Masonic legitimacy among free black men is traced, and on it more than any other factor, rests their case. That charter, which is authenticated and in safekeeping, is believed to be the only original charter issued from the Grand Lodge of England still in the possession of any Lodge in the United States. African Lodge allowed itself to slip into arrears in the late 1790’s and was stricken from the rolls after the Union of 1813 although it had attempted correspondence in 1802 and 1806. In 1827, after further unreplied communication, it declared its independence and began to call itself African Grand Lodge # 1. It is interesting to note that when the Massachusetts lodges which were acting as a Provincial Grand Lodge also declared themselves an independent Grand Lodge, and even when the present Grand Lodge of Massachusetts was formed by the amalgamation of the two separate lodges, African Lodge was not invited to take part, even though it held a warrant every bit as valid as the others. The question of extending Masonry arose when Absalom Jones of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania appeared in 1791 in Boston. He was an ordained Episcopal priest and a mason who was interested in establishing a Masonic lodge in Philadelphia. Delegations also traveled from Providence, Rhode Island and New York to establish the African Grand Lodge that year. Prince Hall was appointed Grand Master, serving in this capacity until his death in 1807. Upon his death, Nero Prince became Grand Master. When Nero Prince sailed to Russia in 1808, George Middleton succeeded him. After Middleton, Petrert Lew, Samuel H. Moody and then, John T. Hilton became Grand Master. In 1827, it was Hilton who recommended a Declaration of Independence from the English Grand Lodge. In 1869 a fire destroyed Massachusetts’ Grand Lodge headquarters and a number of its priceless records. The charter in its metal tube was in the Grand Lodge chest. The tube saved the charter from the flames, but the intense heat charred the paper. It was at this time that Grand Master S.T. Kendall crawled into the burning building and in peril of his life, saved the charter from complete destruction. Thus a Grand Master’s devotion and heroism further consecrated this parchment to us, and added a further detail to its already interesting history. The original Charter # 459 has long since been made secure between heavy plate glass and is kept in a fire-proof vault in a downtown Boston bank. In 1946, the Grand Lodge of England again extended recognition to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge but withdrew it the same year. In 1994, the Grand Lodge of England finally accepted a petition for recognition by Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. “England cited several reasons recognition was witheld,” Nicholas B. Locker, Grand Master of Prince Hall from 1992-1994, said in an interview in June 1996. “One was ‘territorial boundries,’ because the Grand Lodge of England had already recognized the white Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, which shared the same jurisdiction with us. “Another factor was that Prince Hall owed back payment of dues to the Grand Lodge. Back 200 years ago, there were no checks, and often dues for England were put in the hands of sailing ship captains. It was several months before the ships arrived in England, and money was lost. So it wasn’t possible to say for sure that Prince Hall paid all his dues.” The ties were arranged to be formalized in June 1996. In its 212 years, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge has spawned over 44 other Grand Lodges. The subordinate lodges receive recognition once their grand lodges are recognized. Prince Hall is buried in a cemetery overlooking the Charlestown naval yard in Boston’s north end. His grave is situated near a large tree, his wife’s grave is directly behind his. |

| Comments: | On March 6, 1775, Prince Hall and 14 men of color were made masons in Lodge #441 of the Irish Registry attached to the 38th British Foot Infantry at Castle William Island in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. It marked the first time that Black men were made masons in America.
About a year later, since the conflict between England and America had commenced, the British Foot Infantry left Boston, along with its lodge, leaving Prince Hall and his associates without a lodge. Before the lodge left, Worshipful Master Batt, gave them a "permit" to meet as a lodge and bury their dead in manner and form. This permit, however, did not allow them to do any "masonic work" or to take in any new members. Under it, African Lodge was organized on July 3, 1776, with Prince Hall as the worshipful master. It wasn't long before this lodge received an additional "permit" from Provincial Grand Master John Rowe to walk in procession on St. John's Day. On March 2, 1784, African Lodge #1 petitioned the Grand Lodge of England, the Premier or Mother Grand Lodge of the world, for a warrant (or charter), to organize a regular masonic lodge, with all the rights and privileges thereunto prescribed. The Grand Lodge of England issued a charter on September 29, 1784 to African Lodge #459, the first lodge of Blacks in America. African Lodge #459 grew and prospered to such a degree that Worshipful Master Prince Hall was appointed a Provincial Grand Master, in 1791, and out of this grew the first Black Provincial Grand Lodge. In 1797 he organized a lodge in Philadelphia and one in Rhode Island. These lodges were designated to work under the charter of African Lodge #459. In December 1808, one year after the death of Prince Hall, African Lodge #459 (Boston), African Lodge #459 (Philadelphia) and Hiram Lodge #3 (Providence) met in a general assembly of the craft and organized African Grand Lodge (sometime referred to as African Grand Lodge #I). In 1847, out of respect for their founding father and first Grand Master, Prince Hall, they changed their name to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, the name it carries today. In 1848 Union Lodge #2, Rising Sons of St. John #3 and Celestial Lodge #4 became the first lodges organized under the name Prince Hall Grand Lodge. From these beginnings, there now are some 5,000 lodges and 47 grand lodges who trace their lineage to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Jurisdiction of Massachusetts. Honorable Brother Leslie A. Jones was conferred with the degree which gave him the patent power and authority to confer the degree of Mystic Shrine and to organize the Imperial Council, which led to him becoming the first Grand Imperial Potentate of the Imperial Grand Council in the United States of America This 95th Biennial Session marks 114 years of history of the Imperial Grand Council of Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine of free masonary of North and South America. Handy Southern 1875 - 1878 Thornton A. Jackson Southern and Western 1878 - 1881 James A. Handy Southern 1881 - 1889 Thornton A. Jackson Southern and Western 1889 – 1895 John G. Handy is listed as a member of the Baltimore (Southern) Supreme Council, also you will see that he was our Sovereign after the Southern Supreme Council was set up in 1870. In the 1881 NY meeting, James A. Handy represented the Southern Supreme Council. Thornton Jackson represented the Southern and Western Supreme Council. It shows that members had membership in both Supreme Councils. In 1895 John G. Jones, Lt. Sovereign Grand Commander of The United Supreme Council Southern and Western, set up John G. Jones Consistory #1 in Washington D.C. Members were becoming members in this new Consistory. Grand Master Hamilton Smith issued an edit forbidding any member to hold membership in this Consistory. These members had to renounce their membership or be expelled. The members felt that the edit from Grand Master Hamilton Smith was wrong and appealed to the Grand Master who denied the appeal. The Grand Lodge split and became the present day Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge and the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge A. F. & A. M. These two Grand Lodges are still active in Washington , DC . (Note: John G. Jones Consistory #1 has been active in Washington, D.C. since 1895 and is the oldest Consistory in our Supreme Council). Conclusion Supreme Councils can only be set up by another Supreme Council. This Supreme Council has never set up nor authorized any other Supreme Councils. There are several Southern and Western and other organizations which use our corporate name and our history. There has only been one United Supreme Council Southern and Western registered in Washington, D. C. since its formation in 1869, with the first members starting in 1856 from the conferring of degrees from King David Supreme Council. It is an incorporated non – profit corporation since 1895 in good standing in Washington, DC and a 501 C- 10 tax exempt charitable organization. Some organizations get copies of our corporation papers and illegally tell their members that it's their corporation papers. Unlike today, members then could have membership in more than one Masonic Jurisdiction. Due to that crossing over, it was the ground floor for the problems we have today with so many different Masonic Orders. 1895 is when the Supreme Councils of the Southern Jurisdiction (PHA) and the Southern and Western Jurisdiction formally split and 1900 when the Imperial Grand Council Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (PHA) split from our Imperial Grand Council Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.
