COMMENTS

Hey firefighters, you began dabbling in healthcare years ago when you started transporting emergency patients. Only you found out it's like spending two bucks to make one. Now you know EMS doesn't pay the bills! Stop dabbling, get off your asses and immerse yourself in patient transportation. Don't let the private ambulance companies and non-profit hospital based systems make all the money that can be going to support your jobs. Think about it... Someone with the expertise to do just that will begin promoting that very idea to city officials everywhere soon. It will not be part of EMS or Firefighting and it won't happen overnight, so you union guys need to be patient and open minded. The "profits" will be going back to the cities for Fire and Police instead of in the private pockets. The hospitals have put enough granite walls and water falls in their lobbies. Firefighters across the country need to embrace this idea as well. We will need your support. Pass it on to your union brothers.

It is driving me crazy that all your signs have "due" spelled wrong (for the context it is being used in). NOT "DO" or "DEW". There are so many of them! I know it doesn't save lives, but proper spelling is important to giving the impression of an intelligent viewpoint. Fix the signs! PLEASE!

I think if the Fire Fighters make consessions so should the Fire Chief. Is the Fire Chief willing to open his contract and take a 10% pay cut. How come the Fire Chief doesn't live in the city? How come at the first budget meeting he suggested closing the east side fire station based on safety and at the second budget meeting he changed his mind? How come he just wanted to close the east side fire station based on safety and not the west side based on safety?

I was at Monday's City Council meeting and frankly I was embarassed over the rude and inappropriate behavior of many of the persons' that spoke in favor of the firemen. I have several questions that I hope someone will openly respond to on this website. 1. What is the average yearly salary for a Monroe firefighter? 2. How many days per month do they work without incurring overtime? 3. What is the city's cost for a firefighter's benefits included funding their pention? 4. How many firefighters that love our community so much actually live in our city? An intelligent decision can only be made with ALL the facts. I think it only fair and logical that these facts be shared with the public also. It would be equitable if the firemen would post their home and cell numbers on this website also.

Thanks so much for putting up all those signs in town making the citizens of Monroe aware of what is going on with the fire department. If it wasn't for that it would have slipped by me. I just got done writting our Mayor and Council members. I also made them aware that Im not sure if all the citizens of Monroe are aware of what is going on here. Not everyone has the paper or a computer anymore due to their own budget cuts to make ends meet. They cut the less important things in their lives but not their health insurance and thats what the city is doing to their citizens if they vote on this and it passes. I hope they realize what they would be doing to our city. Keep up the good work and thanks for all you do. My prayers are with you all.

The firefighters/paramdics were the first to arrive and take care of my son when he had an asthma attack at school (Waterloo). i took comfort while i was at work in washtenaw as an EMT/ER tech that he was in good hands until i could get back to town. although MCA is a reputible company, there are never enough people available or close enough in a true emergency. if it was the politicians child, family member or themselves in an emergency how fast would they want help? Maybe they need to be educated on "time is tissue/muscle" concept because no leader of this city wants to suffer brain damage from prolonged hypoxia after cardiac arrest, or even death or worse a child having a deadly allergic reaction that was, early on, reversible until it turned to decompensated. everyone always thinks it wont happen to them or my family wont get hit by a drunk driver as the mins seem like hours as they wait injured/dying for help. Regretably, people only seem to learn when its too late. i am sure there are lots of other ways to cut costs, and what are they going to do when the empty forclosed houses start catching on fire. the more abandonded homes the bigger the increase for arson. i have an empty house on each side of me! i would love to get a good look into the spending, salaries and perks the people of this city are getting that could really be cut not only for saftey but to go towards OUR SCHOOLS because that is the future of this town. i know i want the city i live in to be known for safe community living and the less people laid off the better! no wonder the city is loosing taxes because everyones mving out! and the kids growing up now are not gonna stay either if things rot away. the future of this town is in just as much jeapordy as today.

Just wanted to add to a previous comment about your typo on your large signs around the city. "Do to" should read "Due to". Doesn't shed a very favorable light on your organization when you can't spell correctly. To be fair though, all your small signs have the correct spelling. But it's the large signs that stand out and everyone reads.

The fire dept. is not the place to make cutbacks. It will not only lead to loss of homes due to fires but it is UNSAFE for the firefighters working the fires. I am sure there are different areas cutbacks could be made. I just hope they find them before its too late.

I had a house fire last month. It was one of the most horrible experiences I have ever had. The fire departments response was quick. While I lost most everything, they were able to save some. And when you have lost your home, your possessions, and your beloved pets, anything you have left is very precious. If they would not have responded so quickly I could have lost everything or the fire could have spread to the surrounding homes. Or worse yet, someone could have gotten hurt or killed. Every second counts with a fire. Every second. I am disgusted that the budget would be cut, again. I am sure there is a lot of fat that can be cut from some other non vital services. In this economy the last places you need to cut are vital services. Perhaps the city needs to be sued because they are violating safety issues. My suggestion is to hire a forensic accountant and investigate where other cuts can be made instead. I would also contact other departments and ask for help in fighting this. I like the signs that I am seeing around the city. The public needs to be made aware of how very serious this cut would be. Our lives are being put in danger.

Our Mayor must be related to your's. He is bringing in a private EMS company to "help when we are all out, at no cost to the city." Yet they will be stationed in our old building. And we already have one layoff who lost in arbitration trying to get his job back. Man if this goes through it sounds like you'll have lost 19 guys in two years, yikes! Mr Whittaker:
Re: the Local 326 signs
The dictionary lists 38 different meanings of the word "do";
however, "attributable to" or "caused by" are NOT included in any of the meanings. Perhaps the word that should have been used is "due". Sorry but, considering the horrible mis-use of the English language seen everywhere in this day and age, I thought I should point out the proper usage.
