A site devoted to this band is long overdue! Finally a place for Bourbon fans to hang.
Well done!!

OMG! I so miss the Bourbs! The West Coast is so missing the Bourbs! They were an institution in Nanaimo and the Gulf Islands in the '90s. You know, I am a musician and have been inspired by their fantastic brand of live shows, killer song-writing and recordings and I must say nothing has come out since that can even touch them. But if you are reading this, you already know!

We used to follow them around when they came to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. One night on Denman island, a group of us college jazz-nerds got to hang with them back-stage at the beautiful Denman Island Hall. We stayed there way too late, drinking beer and singing Jackson Five songs around the old out-of-tune piano. Good times!

Sign me up for the reunion petition too!

Cheers!

Hi, just wanted to say thanks a lot for this site... lots of great music and wow! I haven't seen Ear to the Ground in lots of years!

I had a chance to see the Bourbons in Edmonton at the Bronx. Weeping Tile opened for them. Bourbons were good, but Weeping Tile gave a better show (I was surprised at the time, too!).

Anyways! Thanks :)

I just have to say thank you one thousand times over for this site. I've been a fan of the Bourbons for a few years now, but living so far from Canada, it's been hard for me to find a lot of material. This site is a dream come true. I'm actually a little teary-eyed.

Thank you so much!!!!!

Hi!
Everybody else has already said it, but seriously, this site rules. Living so far from Canada, I don't really know anyone else in real life who listens to the Bourbons (not that I don't try and spread the word), but it's been great to find others who appreciate this wonderful band as well, over the net.
Thank you for this site (you have lyrics! You rock!) - keep up the good work :)

I first experienced the Bourbons in 1989-90 when i worked at BrockSound on MAnning ave in toronto, just down the street from Clintons. I believe i was at the Nov 10th 1990 Clintons show posted on this site.

I was immediately compelled to boogie! ALso, I was struck by how 'conscious' the songs were. At this time, anything that wasnt 'hair metal', or refried 'new wave' seemed revolutionary.

Especially inspiring was the tendency for BTC shows to finish with some kind of improvised jam, usually involving members of local bands. Some of these, Big Sugar, BarnakedLadies, LookPeople, ShuffleDemons ThomasTrio and others, went on to become Toronto institutions, if not famous in themselves.

There was always a nice earthy humanity about the band.
THe musicianship was always high-calibre, and the individual players very distinct from one-annother.

Jason Mercer, always kept a cheerful watch on proceedings from under a basebal cap, while stitching the rhythm together with his bass. Fabulous bass tone as well!

Andrew Whiteman, gave some very potent songs, sinuous guitarsmanship, and vocal delivery.
( plus, a really neat variety of guitars and amps! Anyone see the Horseshoe show where he slung the spring reverb of his amp from bungee-cords attatched to the ceilling? Hillarity ensued when it became the gag of the night to jostle Andy's reverb for a great CullAAoooininiggg!!)

Chris miller had this almost gunslinger like stance, fixed almost inward gaze as he leant into his solos.
Fabulous tone, anywhere from glassy to Memphis ditch!

Dave Wall, was of course, awesome to watch, jumping about the stage, singing like his ass was on fire. I'd seen them several times before i came to know how great he was as a keyboardist though. What a dark horse! Dave's humour on and offstage used to kill me!

Kate Fenner joined fulltime after i'd seen like half a dozen shows. I cannot summon words to describe her voice ( smoky? soulful? sensuous? words fail.. oh well )
She had a very well grounded air about her always.
SHe coped admirably with the attentions of smitten (mostly male) audience members, and was clearly not used to such attentions.

Gene Hardy blew me away by playing alto, tenor and baritone saxes, sometime two at the same time!!
His adoption of 'the bowed saw' as a musical instrument was not only novel, but always musical!

OF course, then there's Chris Brown, peering out from behind that old Hammond L-101/Clavinet. I remember his eyes used to roll back in his head when the swell of the Hammond/Leslie wouild fill the room. The primary verbal mouthpiece of the band, Chris was never short of comment on issues of the day, and naturally, this passion hasn't waned.
Offstage, Chris always had time to talk, even when he was really too busy to be chatting. I'll never know how he managed such grace in crazy circumstances.

Anyway, this is turning into an essay, so i'll just post and say THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
THe best band ever to NOT rule the airwaves or record store shelves.

OH THe Beauty -Eh?!?

Well, no show off, most were friends of mine. I hear from Andrew now and again. I don't know why most was on tape. I had alot of shows. I may have CDs too. Iforget as an Epileptic. I know there are pictures I can't see. But the Masonic Temple came up. Any Band member from Lawrence I remember and Dave, the rest are gone. Too bad for me. I'm in the middle off a move and half living at my parent's house, so things are mixed as am I. I want all their work and will get their shows, which are probably in with my Dead(Gratefully) stuff. Where all that is can be trouble. My parent's upstair's storage, basement or a storage place. I'm lost, maybe the cottage, but there is alot of shows. I hope I didn't through out the live stuff. Probably not, but hope is in the air.

Lets get them to BC shall we. Sign both myself and my hubby dave biggs to the petition. We LOVE you cats and can't wait to experience a live show once again.!!!! Please come west - please please....D
