It had moved me also to write Mulberry Leaves back in mid January. I see here a poignant poem, David. It so clearly shows me how death is all around us pressing into the bittersweet mystery of life coaxing it’s inevitable change to itself, to death. Thanks for sharing it again. A very nice parable indeed. And though not specifically a Christian writing, it is consistent with many things I am familiar with--in oarticular, the triumph over Death by Life. A few years ago I wrote a poem simply called "Hope" in the wake of the Katrina disaster. I won't reproduce it here, except for the first lines, "Hope is not a loose thread dangling in the wind. Rather a strand strengthened with the bands of faith and the strings of the heart." Of course, there is allusion to some scriptures, but these are universally applicable to all caring people, cultures, faiths. For example, when these words from Saint Paul, "And now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." --1 Corinthians 13:13 are combined with the wisdom of King Solomon, "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls; for he doesn't have another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat, but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken." --Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12 it is easy to see how your parable is proverbial. Thanks, John P.S. As an aside, with the bitter cold many of us have been experiencing lately, the Ecclesiastes verses also remind me of "a three dog night," not the artist, but the principle behind that idiom.

I don't have much time right now, but I wanted to let you know how pretty it is. Don't have time for the story at this time though. I saw a sight like that...hundreds of dark birds...all over the Wal-Mart parking lot, for about 40 minutes. I saw this sight 2 times. They flew in various formations. They would fill the parking lot trees full, then all take off. Then they would do it all over again. Maybe they were just resting and then going home as you said. I don't know, but at the time...both times, it felt pretty eerie to me.

I just had a chance to more thoroughly explore your den. It's beautiful! I remain a big fan of Ramon's--I especially like Summer of the Milksnake, and love your photo that goes with it. Perfect. Ramon has a great sense of place in all his work. I read for myself and enjoyed even more the piece you read last night. So nicely done! Browsed your photos as well and felt oh so envious. Not that you're such a good photographer, but that you know that art. Someday if I ever retire, I'm going to learn how to do that. I "see" photographs everywhere. Loved them all, but my favorites were first of all the Torrey Pines. My favorite tree in the whole wide world. So quirky the way they grow away from the wind. I've done a lot of research on those and written extensively about them, in a novel, part of which was excerpted for a cover story by the Reader some years back. Also, for some odd reason, I just loved your manholes. I think it's because they're so...so...human? They're so much a part of our mundane everyday worlds and we never look at them, yet you've caused us to see them as art. Now in your photographs, I see they're all a little different.
