I'm wondering if I'm a relative? I had a greatgrandmother named Sarah Lucretia Culberson in La Grange, GA married to Jeremiah Kossuth McCall. Sarah's mother's name was Romelia Bird. I'm pretty sure there is a Lanier someplace, but I can't find it at this moment in time!
Sarah Lucretia had a daughter, my grandmother, and her name was Mary Pope McCall. She was married to Edgar Hugh Daniel,my grandfather, but we can't go far in that Daniel line. We're looking for the parents of father. His father was James Thomas Daniel of Columbus, GA and briefly Eufaula, AL.,and we know that James Thomas Daniel had 2 wives, Mary Hahhah Holland and Alice Mead Gray. And that's the brick wall. But there are some stories of Barbados in distant kin who share dna with us.
I feel something special at your website. I suspect I have ties to Italy too, and some of your women remind me of my women; plus there is singing ability and writing ability in our family. Do you have info on any of these people by chance? Marylee Daniel Mitcham

The 1850 census lists the following for the Varner family in Gibson County, with the value of all real estate owned and occupation of the head of the family, and the age, sex, and place of birth of each:
2389
Wm. VERNER 45 M . Farmer 2000 NC
Mary VERNER 46 F . . . NC
John VERNER 23 M NC
Cassa VERNER 20 F NC
Sarah VERNER 17 F . . . NC
William VERNER 14 M NC
Maria VERNER 12 F . . . NC
Elizabeth VERNER 7 F . . . TN
George VERNER 5 M . . TN

Here is the 1850 entry for William Varner’s eldest daughter Rebecca. Some of Rebecca’s descendents still live in Gibson County. By the 1860 census, three more children were born (David, 1851; Francis, 1854; and James, 1857).
2391
David HASTE 30 M . Farmer . NC (son of Henry Haste of NC)
Rebeca HASTE 25 F . . . NC
William HASTE 6 M . . . TN
Elizabeth HASTE 3 F . . . TN
John HASTE 1 M . . . TN
According to A History of the Dyer, Tennessee Community, The People and Their Work., 1986, Turner Publishing Co., Rebecca’s grandson, Rev. William Haste, Jr., was a professor of languages at the Laneview school in 1901. The Haste family was and still is very active in Salem Baptist Church.

From Salem Baptist Church 150 Years of History 1847-1997, by Mike Fairless, 1997, “One of the founding members of Salem Church was David Haste. From the beginning, he had been faithful and strong. He had served as deacon and on a high percentage of the committees. In December 1861 David Haste surrendered to preach and was licensed to preach at that time. He was ordained in May 1863 and in November 1863 was asked to take the pastoral care of the church for the year of 1864. The only reference to the Civil War [in the church records] came in April of that year when there was “no conference owing to the arrest of our pastor by the Confederate authorities.”

David Haste and another deacon signed a deed for a plot of land to build a “B.” church. That acre of land belonged to William Varner. Here is the deed:

Registered March 13, 1852
I Wm. Varner have this day bargained and sold and do hereby convey and transfer to David Haste and John Nobly Deacons of the Baptist Church at Salem in Gibson County and their successors in office for the consideration of Five Dollars to me paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged a tract of land in Gibson County Tenn. bounded as follows—beginning at David Phelan’s north boundary line at a stake running north 27 poles with the Dresden Road to a stake then East 8 poles to a stake then south 27 poles to a maple thence west to the beginning containing one acre and 56 poles being the lot or trail of land where the Baptist meeting house called Salem is situated. To have and to hold the same to the said David Haste and John Nobly and their successors in office and their heirs and assigns forever. I do covenant with the said Haste and Nobly that I am lawfully seized of said land have a good right to convey it and that the same is unencumbered. I further covenant and bind myself my heirs and assigns to warrant and defend the title to said land and every part, thereof to the said David Haste and John Nobly and their successors in office their heirs and assigns against the lawful claims of all and every person or person whatsoever—witnesth my hand and seal this 25th day of August 1849—But it is fully understood and agreed that if said church shall be broken up and the house removed then the said land to revert to me and my heirs.
Wm. /his mark/ Varner
State of Tennessee
Gibson County

William and Mary Varner are buried right next to the spot where the first church was built. The original acre of land has expanded into a large cemetery. The church was moved and rebuilt adjacent to the cemetery and continues to exist to this day, celebrating their sesquicentennial in 1997. In other words, the original church “house” was removed.

The Varners left North Carolina after 1838 (birth of Maria) and arrived in Gibson County about 1840. Here is the first land purchase made by William Varner in Gibson County:
Book G, Page 394

Witnesseth, that the said John Phelan for and in consideration of the sum Three hundred and fifty dollars to him in hand paid by the said William Varner the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath, given, granted, bargained, sold, alienated, conveyed and confirmed unto the said William Varner his heirs and assigns for ever, a certain tract or parcel of land, situated, lying and being in the county of Gibson and state of Tenn containing by estimation one hundred acres in Civil District No. 11 butted and bounded as follows. In Witnesseth whereof, the said John Phelan hath hereunto set his hand and affirmed his seal the day and year above written.
John Phelan (seal)

After 3 years, William’s eldest daughter married the neighbor’s son, David Haste. The Haste family was one of the first to settle in Gibson County after the removal of the Indians.
VARNER, Rebecca marr. HAIST, David on 10-AUG-1843

William Varner purchased another 50 acres of land in 1847 from J. B. McWherter for $175.

William Varner’s father, John Varner, Sr., was born in the middle 1760’s and married Rebecca Davis on May 4, 1784 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

William’s father is known as John Varner, Senior because he had a son named John, but we also found that HIS father’s name was also John. John Varner, Sr. was a successful farmer and plantation owner during his lifetime, he died in 1826. Following is his will which indicates he did not own any slaves, as they were generally distributed among the survivors just as other property was.

Will of John Varner, Sr.
Davidson County, North Carolina

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Varner Sr. of the County of Davidson, State of North Carolina, being gathering in years but perfect in mind and memory thanks be to God for his mercies and calling to mind that all mankind has wont to die do make this my last will and testament in like manner following:
First of all, I will my soul to God who gives thereof and that my surviving managers that I wil hereinafter name pay all my just debts and due to my body be decently buried in a Christian like manner and funeral expenses honorably paid and as to my worldly properties that God hath been pleased to bless me with I will as follows:
I will to my children or these lawful heirs that I shall now name $1.00 each and no more than what they have already received, naming this Nancy, Thomas, John, Lucy Smith, Polly Harrison, son William, Eli, Betsy Ward, and Rebecca Cooper are truly to receive the above $1.00 from my surviving manager of this my last will. The division of my lands after the death of my wife Rebecca, the first tract, called the old tract, is to be divided as follows: beginning at Nichols’ line on the creek and running with the meanders of the creek to the mouth of Thorny Branch and beginning at the mouth of the Pond Branch and then up that to the line and the North end of this tract I will to my son William or his lawful heirs. The other I will to my son Mathew and his lawful heirs together with the houses thereon.
And as to the other tract of 130 acres, lying on the Big Branch, I will as follows, if that is for William and Mathew to have an equal number of acres to be divided by a line east and west and for William to also have the north end of said tract, Mathew the other south end. And as for the performance of the above within instrument, I fully put my whole trust in my beloved wife Rebecca and my son William to execute the same as I acknowledge the same to be my entire last will and testament before God and these subscribing witnesses.

I happened to run into your sight at that point. You also have a few of my Greenville ancestor's names mentioned in your space, but they were common names, also. I'll see if I can connect a few. I am daughter of King Davis Jr. I am interested --if possible perverving the Old Salem Cemetery on Byhalia. I went there yesterday and it is in bad condition. I remember 30 yrs. ago exploring it with my dad and it was in bad condition at that time. There were graves of people that died in 1790--from my family there were DAvis and Gastons--we took some picts. Yesterday the only tombstones I found were mostly Dean's. I live in Collierville and I would like to do something to preserve this cemetery.

Hello Anne,

I saw your website and wondered if you had any
information on my great-great-grandmother Ann Dean.
She was born about 1810 in Laurens Co., SC and died
about 1869-70 (buried in an unmarked grave at
Coldwater Baptist Cemetery near Barton, MS). She was
the second wife of Fleming Moseley, also from Laurens
Co., SC. They had 5 children together and the entire
family moved to Marshall Co., MS about 1850.

I am wondering if Ann Dean is the sister of your
ancestor Thomas Dean and the daughter of Joseph Dean
and Catherine Cunningham? I would appreciate any
information you can give me. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Art Slaton

I happened upon your Web site via Google trying to check my Father's family history. His name was Charles Oliver Lockhart. His father was Oliver Lockhart and his mother was Sadie Beatty. I am aware there are many Lockharts out there, I just don't know if we're related. My grandparents lived in Philadelphia and moved to Collingdale, Pa. in the early part of 1900's, maybe around 1920. I know the Lockhart name hails from Scotland, but my grandparents came from Ireland. My grandmother, Sadie Beatty was actually born in America, and at age three went back to Ireland with her family. She returned to America at age eighteen, I believe in the Philadelphia area.

My father was born in Montreal (Joseph George Babin) in the 1940's (he is an only child) He and his parents moved to Chicago, Illinois sometime shortly after that. His mothers name was Beatrice. Both his mom and dad had very large families and both had past away many years ago. After moving to Chicago, they had basically no contact with family in Canada.

Dont know if there is any relation. Just writing to see if any of this connects to family.

Thanks for your time.

I truely thank you for your fantastic work. I'll be in touch as soon as I can get my thoughts together. I'll try to 'flesh out' my line from William Stuart, Jr., and Jemima Johnson's son William Stuart 3rd.

Found your great website as I was researching my husband's immigrant ancestors - the Gibbs and Nye families as well as many other great grandparents who came over in the 1630's. Thanks for sharing your well-documented research.

Just playing around with the name Babin & found your site. My husband goes back to Antoine Babin born in 1626 that married Marie Mercier in 1661. Of course in LA. Came from Canada. Don't know when.

Anne,
thanks for the great help. I was able to obtain George Smith's father and Mary White's parents thanks to you. I'll let you know if I find anything further on either of these.
