Comments:THUMB!
Theme: This is a mail art call inviting your creative visual responses to
the theme of the “Thumb,” that thick first digit of the human hand.
Whether it’s thumbs up, thumbs down, or all thumbs, this art will
explore the various connotations of the thumb, with irony, with humor,
or in all seriousness. This exhibit is in conjunction with a series of
essays revolving around diverse aspects of the human thumb, created
by a writer working on her master of fine arts creative nonfiction thesis.
Open Media: collage, photography, painting, drawing, printing, etc.
Format & Size: postcards from 4”x6” (or 10 x 15 cm), up to A5 size
about 5 ¾” x 8 1/4” (or 14.8 x 21 cm) maximum.

Documentation: All received works will be exhibited and the artists
listed on the blog http://thumbingthrough.wordpress.com/
Please include your name, mailing address, and email address for
acknowledgment and correspondence purposes –we will send a list of
participants, and copies of any press coverage of the exhibition. In the
true spirit of mail art we want your postcards to continue their
communication journey off the blog and into the physical world with an
exhibition at a local venue here in California (to be announced). At the
exhibit we will encourage audience interaction in the form of written
response to the art. Then the postcards will move on to – who knows?
There is also the possibility that some of the images will be referenced
on the blog and/or in the written thesis.

Organized by: artist, Joan Desmond, http://www.joandesmond.com
and writer, Ann http://www.annbeman.com/ and http://thumbingthrough.com
No fee, no returns: The postcards will become part of the collection
of Thumbing Through.

the sense of community and feedback it inspires. We look forward to
your participation in this project.

Comments:Hello,

Please contribute to my mail art project.

Title: Merzwalk08

Theme and Instructions: Walk completely around the place you live. The path you follow can be any shape or size. You may walk counterclockwise or clockwise, fast or slow, alone or within a group, or holding the hand of someone you love. You can do it during the night or day, barefoot or shod. But you must go out and come back in through the same door (or window, if that's your pleasure). During your walk, be mindful of the ground under your feet, watch the sidewalk, pay attention to the street, be conscious of the dirt and the pavement. Also, during your walk, pick up a piece of litter or trash, preferably made from paper or any other flat material that can fit into an envelope. Use the found item in a work of art. Or designate the item a ready-made. In either case, put your art in an envelope, or, if you'd like, affix it to a postcard. Alternatively: describe your merzwalk using words or pictures. After it has dried, send it to Merzwalk08.

Only three submissions to Merzwalk08 per artist. But you may make as many merzwalks for yourself as you want and do it as frequently as you like.

There will be a show in January 2009 and documentation will include a catalogue that will be sent to all Merzwalk08 participants.

Deadline: January 3, 2009

A new publication of art and writing. Open submission. No poetry. The intention is to distribute it internationally, to create a community on paper. First issue due February 2008. Please forward to anyone you feel might be interested in contributing or post this on suitable art/writing forums etc. No artwank please.

Each issue will be black and white, colour cover, free inserts/gifts. The initial run is expected to be 200 copies and ideally we want to double that with each subsequent issue. We have no funding, this is all self-published. We do plan to sell the publication and any profit is going to be put back into the project and the PEEP! gallery. Any mail art entries will be shown at the PEEP! gallery during 2008. For an image view:

Comments:Panama City, Florida, is preparing for its Centennial Celebration in 2009, and to promote the event we're publishing "City Limits," a literary anthology. One edition will appear each year, making for a trilogy of collectible books showcasing the best fiction, poetry, memoirs, art and photography produced by, for, and about the Emerald Coast city. The first issue is available now.

Works, whether fact or fancy set in the past, present or future, should reference the environment, society, history or other hallmarks unique to this area -- from Civil War skirmishes to World War II pilot training, from turn-of-the-last-century lumber mills to today's tourism economy, from life on the water, to life in the woods, to life on the streets of the city.

The anthology will accept short fiction (up to 2,000 words), poetry (up to three poems per entry, no more than 2,000 words total), personal memoirs (up to 2,000 words), black-and-white line art, and black-and-white photography.
All entries should come with a self-addressed, stamped return/reply envelope, and submit a $10 entry fee (make checks payable to Midsummer Press). Include an e-mail address for quick notification or in case we need to request more information (those chosen for the anthology will be asked to submit a short biographical sketch).

Those who have works chosen to appear in the collection will receive one free copy of the anthology upon publication -- and become a part of Panama City's literary history.

The collection will also feature information about the Panama City Centennial Committee, a calendar of Centennial events as they are scheduled, and information on how to volunteer or otherwise participate in the celebration. In addition, look for a profile of the cover artist written by volume editor Tony Simmons.

SEND YOUR ENTRIES to:
"City Limits"
c/0 Midsummer Press
P.O. Box 701
Panama City, FL 32402-0701

Written entries should be typed/printed out on plain white paper with dark black ink. Art/photo entries may be made initially as digital files on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Deadline for submissions to Volume 2 is Dec. 31, 2007.

Comments:Graveyard Gatherings is a black & white, digest size (5.5” x 8.5”) zine for fans of good old-fashioned horror. Are you a fan of Vincent Price horror movies? Bela Lugosi? Boris Karloff? Did you run home from school everyday to watch Dark Shadows? Me too, and I've started this zine for us.

If you would like to submit art, poetry, a short story, or anything unearthly, you can send it to the following address. You can also send a photo of yourself posing in your favorite cemetery spot for the back cover. Have fun with it, but remember, no nudity, no hurting animals, and no vandalism.

There are no fees to enter and there will be no judging process. There is no theme, no rules, no guidelines at all. Everything will be accepted and exhibited. The Mail Art will not be returned. The artist will be credited for their work and their address will be listed with the show. Viewers will be encouraged to participate. I will post the show on my gallery website at www.theemergenceproject.com in early January 2008. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at sarah@theemergenceproject.com.

Comments:Call for Submissions of MailArt

This call is an act of interpersonal research. It is my goal, through this project, to gain a better understanding of views other than my own. My research focuses the culture surrounding burial. What are your beliefs about burial? Why should or shouldn’t we bury our dead? How should they be buried? What about this act is significant?

In exchange for sharing your thoughts with me, I will send you a response piece outlining my views. At the end of this project, I will also send each participant a record of all submissions.

Guidelines:There are no limitations on the size or shape of your postcard. Please do not include any inorganic materials in your artwork. To receive myresponse, please include a return address.

Comments:Mail art call - Honduras, Central America

THEME: “Merry Christmas”

Comment: artist Jorge Restrepo (www.jorgerestrepo.com) will make an installation in the Spanish Cultural Center, Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Central America). The mail-artworks will show the reality of the world, the extreme differences in religion, social classes, justice, poverty, income, access to water, languages…of different countries….of the world. While some people are partying and celebrating, gambling…vacationing…in December, others are suffering. Jorge Restrepo will create an environment of Christmas celebration at the exhibit rooms of the Center…using the mail-artworks. The observer to the exhibit will feel the sensation of Christmas decoration. When attendants look in detail to the decoration (mail-artworks simulating Christmas cards and messages) the reality of the world will appear…dramatically…in from of their eyes…

Electronic documentation to all. Please send Email address, name and postal address.

Format and medium: free, maximum A4 (letter) . All work be exposed, mail art, stamps, visual poetry, others. No returns.

Deadline: November 30, 2007
