Comments:I cannot believe the 35th Class Reunion is here. Where have the years gone? I had dinner with Sherry Porter-Heim recently, and after getting word of this reunion, I plan on attending--my first. I've been married 25 years to my hubby, Charles, and we have been long-haul trucking for 21 of those 25 years seeing this great nation while providing support services for both the Dept. of Defense and Dept. of Energy. He wanted to continue trucking a little while longer, and I wanted to go back to school. So here I am back at TCC hoping to be accepted into the Respiratory Therapy program. One is never too old for a second or third career :) So good to see some of your comments, and I'll see you at the reunion.

Comments:Sorry I missed the 30th. I have to admit that I have not seen any Hale Grads in ages; but I do recognize some names from the entries. I was hoping for a 35th reunion, but did not see any "chatter" until now. It would be a blast to attend and catch up. My family is presently rooted in Raleigh, NC, but a lot of miles traveled since '75.

Wishing all well.

For those of you who knew me, it won't surprise you that I've been an educator for 31 years, since school was always what I did best! We're still living in the Chicago area, and almost never get to Tulsa, and so we're looking forward to June!

Comments:Really nice 50th Anniversary Reunion last weekend! Lots of old friends and familiar faces....at least from several classes with the exception of the Class of '75. So Ed Meyer, Michael Goodman and I shared some good memories and then the class of '78 took me under their wings and we had a great time! I had debated whether to come and while mildly disappointed that I didn't see many familiar faces, had a great time in the end. Hoping that as all my classmates are making out their budgets for the fiscal year 2010(lol), you'll include a few dollars a month that will enable you to be there for the 35th. Because, while it's been half a lifetime ago and I've gone on with my life too, I still enjoy that short time of seeing you and remembering good (maybe even not so good) times past!

I have been to two reunions in the past and saw a lot of people that I really love. I have held a variety of jobs in restaurants, mental healthcare, but I was a full time janitor for nine years. I was the office manager for Alliance Maintenance for 13 1/2 years. I worked for DHS in clerical for 2 years. Now I am job hunting again. I am still a Christian and go to Redeemer OKC. I live in Norman.

Lynn Seaton's talent earned him a seat beside legends of jazz
Alaska.

Despite the fact that it has a reputation for giving musicians lots of opportunities and good wages, it's the only state in the union where jazz bassist Lynn Seaton hasn't yet performed.

"I haven't been able to find a gig there," he said in a recent telephone interview from his Texas home. "So if you hear of one, let me know."

Don't feel too badly for him. He may not have had the chance to do his stuff for Alaskan music lovers, but chances are many of them have heard the Tulsa native and recent Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame inductee on one of the more than 100 recordings he's done -- including the 1987 Grammy-winning album "Diane Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra" and the 1986 Grammy-nominated "50th Anniversary Tour" from Woody Herman and His Big Band.

He's also appeared at festivals and other engagements all over the world, and teaches in the internationally famous jazz program at the University of North Texas.

By the time he graduated from Tulsa's Nathan Hale High School, Seaton had been playing the bass for almost a decade. But, he said, he didn't get into a real band until he'd left Tulsa for the University of Oklahoma.

"I was in innumerable garage bands in Tulsa. My parents were very tolerant of my youthful musical endeavors," he said with a chuckle. "But after I got to OU, I played in a couple of bands out of Norman that were around for a while.

"One was Oleo, like the margarine -- or the Sonny Rollins tune, which is what the name was based on. And there was Xebec, which was my first full-time music gig."

Xebec, the rock band that was also the one-time home of well-known Tulsa keyboardist Jim Downing, afforded Seaton the first chance he had to practice music as a vocation.

"I'd always dreamed of making a living at my music," he said with another chuckle. "Be careful what you wish for."

Seaton spent several years as a road musician, and then, in early 1980, he went to visit his sister Rebecca and her husband in Cincinnati.

"I sat in at the Blue Wisp, a jazz club, and gave them my card," he remembered. "I said, 'If you ever need a bass player, let me know.' Two weeks later, they called and asked if I was serious."

The Blue Wisp, which featured big-name soloists every week, became Seaton's musical home for the next three and a half years. He played steadily, five nights a week, until 1984, when he got a chance to go out on the road with one of the biggest of the big-band names.

"The Woody Herman band offered me a position, and I was torn," he said. "I thought, 'Here I am, playing with top jazz acts every week. Why would I want to go out on the road?'

"The drummer at the Blue Wisp was a wise sage named John Von Ohlen, who'd played with Herman and with Stan Kenton. He said, 'You should go. You get a certain other kind of experience when you travel. You get a kind of consistency. Plus, you get to see the country.'

"He was right. What he meant when he said 'consistency' was that you travel every day, and each time you play for people who paid their money to hear your music played at the highest level possible. It doesn't matter how tired or sick you are, how bad the hotel or the food has been. You learn to turn on the switch."

The legendary Herman, Seaton remembered, "was very understanding, very loose, and very cool. He'd seen it all and done it all. It was a band with a lot of young people in it, and we called him the road father."

That first experience with Herman lasted for a year, leading to other jobs with the likes of the Count Basie Orchestra, Tony Bennett and George Shearing. He moved to New York, where he found plenty of work touring and freelancing with a dizzying variety of jazz musicians.

In the midst of it, he married his wife, Marianne.

"I got married in 1986," he recalled. "I asked her after I'd been on the road for six months."

The two stayed in New York until 1998, when he accepted the offer to teach at North Texas University. Now, Texas is his base, although he's hardly slowed down.

"I still take several trips a year," he said. "It's a performing school, so they encourage us to perform.

"Many good things throughout my life have fallen into my lap," he added. "This is one of them."

The webmaster of the Nathan Hale Alumni Foundation asked me to announce the new "LOGO SHOP" on the alumni foundation website. www.nathanhalealumni.org/shop.htm You can now purchase shirts, bricks, golf balls, caps, etc. to help support today's Hale staff, teachers, and students.

Another exciting announcement! The alumni foundation has recovered 63 canisters of old football films, originally filmed on 16 mm dated from 1964 thru 1985. The alumni foundation is in the process of transferring the vintage media to DVD media. You can now purchase game DVD's from the alumni website! www.nathanhalealumni.org/shop2.htm The proceeds from sales will go directly to the athletic department to help purchase new football uniforms.

Spread the word to all former football players and friends to purchase these priceless memories playing for the HALE RANGERS! Check out the helicopter film it is rather interesting, a large bag is dropped onto the practice field and players race to see what's inside the bag. If you happen to know the story behind this event, please contact Karen Moon, Webmaster of Nathan Hale Alumni Foundation at www.info@nathanhalealumni.org

Well I've just about recovered from the my 3am night at the reunion. It was so great seeing and visiting with all that I made it around to. I was sad to see that I'd missed some people that were caught in the pictures, but somehow eluded me! The pictures the classmates took were great! Kudos to all you unknown photographers! Some information was relayed to the reunion committee that Hale is requesting that any alumni members of the Hale Marching 100 participate in the homecoming festivities this fall. So I'm working with David Giacometti to try and make this a reality. If you were in the band and are interested please email me and let me know. We'll work out the details for instruments (if they're needed) and music. Come on Hale Marching 100!

Comments:Hello all! Good to see some of you out here. I appreciate the kind words and am glad the site is serving a useful purpose for the alumni. Makes any work I do well worth the effort.

Looking at site stats, we are getting close to 250 unique visitors and close to 1,000 page hits each DAY to this site. For an alumni website, this is quite a lot of traffic. Although I'm glad we're getting a lot of visitors, I wish I could figure out a way to get more people involved in posting comments, memories, etc. in either the guest book or forums. I realize some people are shy but after the great time we all had at the reunion, it seems a shame not to use the site to remain in touch with other alumni. I know a lot of people read the guest book and forums but most seem to read and not participate. Remember, this is YOUR site, so don't be shy! The more of you that register and post in the forums, the more others will feel like jumping in as well. Who did you see at the reunion? What stories did you hear or tell? Would love to hear from all of you.

Thanks to all of you who have posted comments and please feel free to give me your ideas on how we can continue to improve the site. I've been asked to be the Reunion Chairperson for our next class reunion, so I will need everyone's help and comments on how we can improve on this year's effort. Thank you all again and it was good to see so many of you GREAT people at the reunion!

Comments:Had a great time but disappointed that I was not able to talk to so many people. Even met some great people that I never knew in high school. There were just too many of us. Here are some thoughts I had before the reunion:

Why you know you are at your 30th High School Reunion and not in High School anymore.

All your pants have elastic waistbands.

The drugs you take are all prescribed by a real doctor.

What??

You see on a regular basis at least Five(5) doctors-eye doctor, dentist, family physician, gastroenterologist and cardiologist.

You are up by 6:00am and happy about it.

What did you say???

Your boss doesn’t put you to sleep but Leno and Letterman do.

The 4 door sedan looks better to you than the 2 door convertible.

You would rather see what’s cooking on “Emeril Live” than what’s hot on the playboy channel.

Could you speak up????

You say to the kids, “Turn off that crap and put on some real music.” Oh no, I’ve turned into my grandfather.

You can’t see far away and you can’t see close up. The world is a big fuzzy mess.

When you call CD’s, albums and still say you are going to the record store.

When young people have no idea who, John, Paul, George and Ringo are.

When two of the afore mentioned are dead.

Huh??????

When you don’t remember what it is like to be “bored”.

The main topic at a dinner party is what diet plan everyone is on.

You don’t know how to program the VCR but the kids do.

My hearing is FINE?????????

When your hair is not on your head but in all the wrong places.

Gravity has taken over your body and not in a good way.

The radio show you have listened to since 1982, Dick Bartley’s Rock N’ Rolls Greatest Hits, has as its sponsor, Tylenol Arthritis Pain Medication–and this makes sense to you. In fact you stopped at Walgreen’s on the way home and bought some.

You are mowing the lawn and over the roar of the lawn mower, you hear and feel the throbbing, pulsating beat of the neighbor kid’s car as he comes down the street and you smile knowing his hearing loss will be greater than yours.

Comments:Speaking of feeling old...

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1987 . They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.
The CD was introduced the year they were born.
They have always had an answering machine
They have always had cable.
They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
They figure streaking is what happens to wet windows.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane Boss, de plane".
They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.
McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue (Dana Moore) how to use a typewriter.

As for the reunion, I have to share one memory. During high school I was at a boyfriend's house when his parents came home from - gasp - his father's 20th high school reunion. His mother was teasing him about an old girlfriend named "Bunny." And all I could think of was how old those people were. LOL.

Everyone take care. Hope to see you at the next reunion.

Comments:Yee haw and BR549. Man - what a time we had at the reunion. Thank you to all who attended - it would not have been a success without you! The memorabilia table was sight to see, and we remembered our departed classmates during the program.

For those of you who left before midnight-you missed Darlene Ashmore-Raglin do the "splits" to prove she still has cheerleading talent-you go girl, hope you didn't hurt yourself. We didn't want the night to end - but after midnight we were turning into pumpkins. Oh -forgot to mention the tour of Nathan Hale. It was a humbling experience to wall the halls and feel "air conditioning" something we didn't have in 1975. The main gym still has our 1975 athletic banners hanging from the ceiling, auditorium has been completely remodeled, band hall has original floor tile and we tried to figure out how they got 100 band members in this small room (today - Hale has only 7 students enrolled in band!) More new features are: new windows, sprinkler system, new floor tile, newly remodeled library with Dell desktops, and last but not least the famous Hale crest on the lobby floor is still there from the Class of '68 and the rule of "don't ever walk on it" still applies. Thanks for the memories and we will see you in 2010.

I hope everyone had a good time and please post lots of pics of our 30th reunion functions on this website for all of us that couldn't make it to see. Gracias!

Oh, dear lord, you had Mrs. Fogelman at your school...we had a Mr. Fogelman at Whitney. When his class would go to the library, Mr. Durst would comment about how the zoo was being let out. Whitney classmates, remember Mr. Jones, Mrs. Hood, Coach Wylie, McKinney and Mims? How about Mr. Dixon, Mr. Adair "I want you to write me a 250 word theme", Mr. Oates, Mr. Trompler, and my all time favorite, Mr. Quiett? Ivan Kellogg ring a bell. It is a wonder we are able to function in this world. How about a Junior High reunion...I know we have better stories that happened here...remember when we had some sort of protest demonstration and they locked a bunch of kids in the auditorium...power to the people..right on!

Comments:From a former faculty member

My first job after graduating from TU in 1974 was teaching math at Nathan Hale High School during the 1974-75 school year. It was the largest High School in Tulsa, I was Hale's 104th and newest teacher only 22 y/o then, and taught Basic Math, Geometry and Algebra II, I'm now I had a few students from the Class of 1975, I've checked the yearbook. My horrible yearbook picture is in a section called New Teachers, with a bad profile and a beard I had barely started growing (to look older, of course).

I didn't even have my own classroom, had to borrow other teacher's room during planning periods. I got talked into sponsoring the Chess Club, probably since only a new teacher could get conned into it....just kidding!

I taught from 1975 to 1984. So my past students are between 36 y/o and 46 y/o now. I was a class sponsor for the Classes of 1978 and 1981. I even "coached" cross country 1979,80,81. I wass married in 1977 and I left in 1984 to get a little more pay for my young family at American Airlines in ttheir computer Department, which became Sabre Computer Services, bought by Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in 2001.

So, I've been married 28 years to my wife Jan (maiden anme McCartney Roper Class of 1969), I've lived in Tulsa since I started college at TU in 1970 and Jan has lived in Tulsa all her life. We have two daughters (they went to Edison don't hold it against them) Our oldest, Courtney, Oklahoma State Class of 2002, 25 y/o has now taught elementary school at Walt Whitman in Tulsa three years, will be at Cooper Elementary next fall, and is engaged to be married in June 2006. Megan, 22 y/o, just graduated from the University of Tulsa May 2005 as an Art History Major, will work at Philbrook museum this summer, while she decides on grad-school, possibly in Scotland, England or New Zealand.

My own 35th High School Reunion will be in October in Carthage Missouri. Started kindergarten there, moved during 1st grade, came back in 9th grade. So,I have some classmates I've known for 35 - 47 years now. You probably have classmates you went to grade school or junior high with also. Each of my reunions 10th, 20th, 25th 30th, it's just nice to see people, not much concern about everybody job status, popularity status, we are just glad we are still around to enjoy each others company.

I couldn't list all the teachers I enjoyed working with and remember over my 10 years at Hale, but I still run into some of them ocassionally.

Well, I am up way too late and this reads like one of those bad Christmas " family newsletters", especially since many of you didn't know me in 1975.

But I encourage all of who haven't decided whether to go, especially if you haven't ever attended a reuonion, to go, even if it just for the tour of Nathan Hale High School, I see you are having. By the way, I still have some Nathan Hale balloons (like you'd release during kickoff at football games),left over from the class of 1981, I'd be glad to give some to you, if you want them.

Thanks
Steve Griffiths

Hey Carol, I might be persuaded to consider forgoing the Wakarusa festival the same weekend as the reunion if you can get Shelley Gange and her legs to come to the reunion! Shelly, you out there? I remember buying your records at your garage sale a few years back....after you divorced that Layne guy....still working as a nurse? Its weird, but I also bought records from your ex-brother in law.....you and your hubbie had the better records!

Kids, you should go to this reunion....why? Cause I won't be there!! Not that any of you would know me anyway. However, if you're looking for a cheaper alternative, come outside Lawrence, KS that weekend to the three day outdoor music festival known as Wakarusa! HAVE YOU BEEN GUILTY OF LOOKING AT OTHERS YOUR OWN AGE AND THINKING, "SURELY I CAN'T LOOK THAT OLD?"

SHE WAS SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR HER FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW DENTIST. SHE NOTICED HIS DDS DIPLOMA, WHICH BORE HIS FULL NAME. SUDDENLY, SHE REMEMBERED A TALL, HANDSOME, DARK-HAIRED BOY WITH THE SAME NAME HAD BEEN IN HER HIGH SCHOOL CLASS SOME 30-ODD YEARS AGO. COULD HE BE THE SAME GUY THAT SHE HAD A SECRET CRUSH ON, WAY BACK THEN??

UPON SEEING HIM, HOWEVER, SHE QUICKLY DISCARDED ANY SUCH THOUGHT. THIS BALDING, GRAY-HAIRED MAN WITH THE DEEPLY LINED FACE WAS WAY TOO OLD TO HAVE BEEN HER CLASSMATE. HMMM,...OR COULD HE???

AFTER HE EXAMINED HER TEETH, SHE ASKED HIM IF HE HAD ATTENDED NATHAN HALE HIGH SCHOOL.

"YES. YES, I DID. I'M A RANGER," HE GLEAMED WITH PRIDE.

"WHEN DID YOU GRADUATE?" SHE ASKED.

HE ANSWERED, "IN 1975. WHY DO YOU ASK?"

"YOU WERE IN MY CLASS!" SHE EXCLAIMED.

HE LOOKED AT HER CLOSELY.

THEN, THAT UGLY, OLD, WRINKLED SON-OF-A-GUN ASKED, "WHAT DID YOU TEACH?"

Of course I do get told I have a beatiful grandaughter when we are out and about. And no I did not craddle rob my wife, we were just blessed later in life, which is probably a good thing since I am just now growing up after being the king of party living and running bars and nightclubs in Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida. Now I am considering writing a book, with the death of Hunter S Thompson I could put down some of my life experiences that would make Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas seem like a childrens book. As I have said for years, my purpose in life has been to be a bad example, you know someone for upstanding people like you to point to and tell their children to straighten up or you could grow up like that idiot. I have done my purpose well. Hope to see you all next month but we are not positive yet due to my wife changing jobs at the end of this month. Take Care

Comments:To all those who are still having trouble deciding whether the $77 will be worth it... don't ponder it any more, just do it! We toured Cain's last Friday and then went out for pizza. With the exception of three of the 15 people there, I knew all the others as merely acquaintances. I can't express what a great time we had reliving, confessing etc about old times, except to quote Bob Jones who said "my cheeks still hurt". I promise you it will be worth it. Take the time, go online and fill out a bio sheet, there are people out there who want to know what you've been up to. Then "blow caution to the wind" and spend the $$ to come and see us! We'll be there waiting to see you!

Comments:Well.. I am back in Tulsa town (kind of) after being gone almost 16 years. I am in the process of moving back from PA to help with aging parents..So, my kids, hubby and I are taking turns going back and forth.. until our businesses and homes are sold and we can all be under one roof..

It has been amazing to go back and look at my old stomping grounds. There is some sort of memory on almost every corner in a 4 square mile radius!

Life has been very challenging for me ... but really good too..............and I am very blessed with 3 children and 3 grandchildren! Just spent Sunday at Gilrease at the arts Festival with my kids and gkids.. and I thought omgosh!... there is nothing better in life!

Anyway, ... can't wait to hook up with all my old buddies and find out what is happening in their lives!

Can it really be 30 years since we have graduated???

Comments:What a nice web site. Great Job to everyone who helped. So many good friends gone Cindy Fine, Phillip Gastineau, Mark Music and many more. These names are so very hard to read and understand the meaning of being so young and full of life but gone from us all :-( . Our classmates and friends of a way to short life.
I returned to Tulsa recently and it is great to be back. I went to the 10th, 20th reunions (had a great time) and hope to see you all at the 30th. Thank you...

Comments:Hi Friends! Hey, take me off the "Lost Ranger" List!!!
How in the heck did I end up on there????? I have been in the Tulsa/Broken Arrow area all this time! Wayne and I will be married 30 years in January 2006!! We have lived in Broken Arrow for last 13 years. My parents are just a few miles away and doing well. We have one daughter, Stefanie, age 23, that will graduate OU next month, May '05! Yippee!! I got a call from Rick Walner today about the reunion coming up. I went to the first one but have not gone to any more of them. May not go to the upcoming one but would love to hear from any old friends! So sad to see so many of us had passed away. Good Grief! Chris McAfee was such a sweet guy. What happened to all of them? Anyone know?? I keep up with Cheryl Phelps Davidson at Christmas and occasionally, Chuck Leaver--hey, I have not heard from him in a while--where are you Chuck??? Carol, you have done a great job on the website, until Rick told me about it, I did not even know it was there. Really enjoyed reading the guest book. So many memories. Hard to believe it has been 30 years! I laughed at some of the people talking about Fulton Elementary! I went to Skelly Jr. High too. I am friends with Mrs. Juanita Dewey who taught 5th grade Speech at Fulton. I talk to her about once a week, she is doing great and is such a sweet friend. We "met" again at a couponing meeting in Broken Arrow years ago and she recognized me. I was really surprised since I certainly don't look like I did in fifth grade! I still have the dark brown hair but with a few grey hairs now! We became friends and the rest is history. Take care, God bless you! I am sending a HUG to each of you since I may not attend the reunion! Cindi

I HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR 24 YEARS NOW, WOW THAT'S KINDA FREAKY! 3 SONS, 25,20 AND 18, AND A 2 YR.OLD GRANDSON, WHO IS MY ULTIMATE JOY! HAVE BEEN ON HIATUS FROM WORK FOR AWHILE, SPENDING TIME WITH MY FAMILY, JUST WENT ON OUR FIRST CRUISE TO MEXICO, BELIZE AND COZUMEL. Comments:Hello everyone, The reunion is fast approaching. I realize that some have balked at the cost of this one compared to previous ones and what all you got for the cost of the previous ones. The saturday tour should be nice. Roaming those halls again and seeing what changes have been made. I would like to propose that maybe on Friday nite if anyone would want to get together, I have a place in mind that seems really nice. It is a deli/bar/cafe. New in town. Been there and it is a nice place. Non-smoking too. Thats different for a bar. Anyway just a thought for those who might want to get out and mingle and it wouldn't cost alot except for whatever you decided to buy at the bar or deli. Check it out at WWW.COSMO-CAFE.COM ! Maybe say if around 6 or 7 pm just show up for a sandwich or soup or whatever. Check out the menu at their website. They are located at about 68th and memorial ,next to red lobster. Just an idea on something else to do where people might meet for a get together before Saturday's events. Have a great one...

David, thanks for taking on the website. We are in the throes of a major upgrade at work, so I can appreciate your efforts. I actually ended up graduating from Booker T., but am interested in Hale 75 since I started kindergarten with a lot of those folks. I am in Tampa, Florida, have two daughters, 26 and 13 (30 years in the PTA when it's all over!) and a year old grandson. Hope all who read this are well and happy. Jennifer

Right now I'm getting ready for bike week in Daytona. This will be the 7th year I've gone, one hale of a party, but I have never run into anyone from Tulsa there. Hey and keep the 30 year crap down man....I told the kids its the 20th...because I'M ONLY 39 NOW....I guess I went from one of the oldest in the class to one of the youngest lol. Well I guess I'll see you all in June. If anyone sees this and is going to Daytona send me a email.....
