| Comments: | I was very interested in all that was on this site. My great grand father died in the Havaco mine disaster in 1912, his name was J.B. Pennington. He is on the deceased list.
I am trying to get a history together for my children, their children and the great grand children so they know some of the things that have happened in the family history. My gret grand mother was married to R.E.Pennington and they had five daughters, she had just had thier last baby when the mine disaaster happened. She was Delaware/Lenape Indian and had a terrible future to face with her husband gone , the trama of it all and and four dughters left to raise alone. My grand mother had married young and took her sisters to finish raising and breast fed her baby sister along with my dad, her mother was in such bad shape, she was instuitutionalized for a while. Terrible trama to all concerned. Great site and thaks for it ! Betty Nelms |

Pennington and is listed in the obituary list of the Havaco Mine disaster. My father was born in what was Jed,West Virginia and I was, as were my siblings also born in WestVirginia, but in Beckley. I am putting together the best geneology reportI am able for my children grand children and great grand children while I am alive and able.I dodn't want them to miss out on thier history if I could help it, it took a life time before we actually found out that was how he died. Our great grand mother was Indian. Lenape/Delaware Indiana and never spoke a word about her history or that of her husband and we so wanted to know our roots etc. Thanks for your contribution. I pesonally appreciate all you have done.

I now live in North Carolina and have been here since 1988 when my younger brother,Daniel, was killed in a Massey mine at Jr.Poca on April 21,1988.My husband was also a coal miner at the time. One death in the family in a dark damp coal mine was enough. I think this web site is wonderful.Thank you for not letting people forget the miners, those who died, those who retired and those still living.

I remember I had just gotten to school in Welch when it happened and the windows in the school rattled and you could hear the blast. We were immediately released from school and sent home. My father was not a miner but the manager of the (I think it was called RF&P Store)company store and we lived just down the hill. We left W VA and moved back to Va. when I was 15. This site brought back many memories for me. Thank you. |

| Comments: | I was told about your web site by my Mother LaVerne (Carter) Lockhart & her sister Deloris (Carter) Lockhart. I found it very interesting as I always do find the history of McDowell County. All my family from both my Dad's side and my Mother's side are originally from McDowell County. My Dad & Mother's family have all worked in the coal mines at one time or another from Grandfather's to Uncle's to Cousin's (some of who still do) to my Brother who is now currently a miner. I feel for those who have lost loved ones to mine explosions or anything to do with the mines but it is part of our history and it's because of that history that we are who we are today. We were raised to have strong belief's and values by those who worked in the mines and stretched the pay enough to care for their family's and raise their children to know what was right and to love one another and respect your history. My Dad's family all lived in Gary (Grandfather was Wallace Lockhart, wife: Kathleen Lockhart). My Mother's grew up in Havaco (Grandfather was Herman Carter, wife: Ida Marie (Phillips) Carter). It was a way of life I grew up loving and appreciating. I love to sit and her the story's from my mother and her sister's about when they were children. If you ever want to live a little history, try living it through their eyes. You'll walk away feeling your a different person. *note: Just a little fact about my family you might find as funny but interesting as I have all these years: My Dad was Ronald Lee Lockhart who married Mom: LaVerne Carter, Dad's Brother Garnett Lockhart married Mom's sister: Deloris Carter. It didn't end there, Dad had two other siblings do the same, Albert Lockhart and James Lockhart married two sister's (not Carter's but sister still the same) they were Carmen (Albert's wife) and Donna (James wife). Thanks for the stroll through your memories.

| Comments: | David just wanted to share a few things about Havaco my sisters and I have searched for a long time for information on the Havaco mine explosion. Our father Robert Herman Carter was working at the mines at the time of the second explosion he had gone to work that morning and was ill so he had came outside to see the company doctor when the mines exploded. Dr. Ralph Counts was the company doctor at the time so the doctor and my father went back to the mines to see if they could help with the rescue of many of his friends and relatives. When my dad got to the shaft of the mines he saw my brother (Billy Carter) watching for him with tears in his eyes my dad hugged him and told him to go home and tell my mother he was alright and would see her later. Many wives and children stood around the company store waiting for word of their loved ones. I was in the forth grade at Havaco Grade SCHOOL I can remember well the cry's of the children as the plaster was falling from the ceilings and wall, the windows were broken some of the children had cuts and bruises, we were told to go straight home to our mothers. There were many that lost their lives on that dreadful day, life would never be the same. Times changed and life went on several years past then one day the men reported to work only to be told they had no job the mines was to close they were devasted because many of them never worked any where but the mines. Dad tried to find work in W.Va. but had to leave the state, We moved to Southern Pines, N.C.where he passed away on Aug. 1st. 1964 He is buried in the Rodifield cemetary at last our dad was laid to rest in the place he loved most. My brother Dwayne was killed in Vietnam on his eighteenth birthday and was laid to rest next to my dad. Thanks for the memories hope this helps looking forward to reading more articles from others. Laverne (Carter)Lockhart hope to hear from others from Havaco that we grew up with. |

I often try to share with younger people and out of state visitors what W.V. was once like, not so many years ago, and I don't believe they really understand. I often show them where dozens of houses, stores and theatre's once stood and they just don't believe me. It is always sad to me to go through an area where at one time so much life was lived and nothing be there to show there was ever a town. |

Jimmy was a Senior at Welch High, while I was a 9th Grader in Welch, when the explosion was felt 7 miles away. The windows rattled. Have read your recount of the disaster event, which is interesting, considering that our Dad - James L. Gilley was the US Mine Safety Engineer who investigated the disaster, and wrote the report for M.S.H.A.and Mine Industry. Best regards, Tim- Altamonte Springs, Fl. |

explosions at Old Jed and Havaco. I was born and raised in Havaco. I was four years old when the January 15, 1946 explosion occured. I can remember the loud noise and tip- toeing to look out the broken windows in our house, to try and see what happened. I thought the world was coming to an end!! I remember the glass breaking inward into the house and broken glass on the floor. This is the only memory that I do have of the explosion, but I do remember it. |
