| Comments: | I am trying to get in contact with the family of Harley (David) Harless, who served in Vietnam - USMC - and was killed on Feb 12, 1976 in Iaegar, WV. From newspaper accounts, it appears to have happened at a place called the Palace Cafe. However, I can not find any information on relatives (mother, father, sister/brother,etc) that may still be living.
I am Director of Research for the Vietnam Dog Tag Project - we have approx. 400 dog tags found in Vietnam and we are trying to return them to their owners. I believe that one of the dog tags I have belongs to Harley and would like to get it back to his family. My friend said, War, WV has such a rich cultural history. I especially love researching the histories of the local churches and the families who began then. I know with Christ the King Catholic Church, it began as early as 1907 as a "mission" church from the parent church in Berwin, WV known as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was officially sold by the Catholic diocese of WV in 1949, and is now a Pentecostal church. Christ the King began as a mission church, and was built for a price of $4,873. In 1932, a fire destroyed the front of the church, and in 1942 the present day Christ the King was remodeled completely for a price of $7,534. The original members of Christ the King were of Italian, Hungarian, and Polish descent. The Italian members actually built most of the church from stones that came from near by mine blastings. The Hungarian and Polish members created religious painting and stain glass windows for the church. Overall, it has a very interesting history as each family that goes there has their own story to tell describing how each family helped in some way. Today, there are many nationalities that worship there: German, English, Russians, and good Americans who dont know their heritage (LOL), along with the original Italian, Hungarian, and Polish families. |

| Comments: | This is a great site, but so much of McDowell County is being left out.
Remember the Gary Country Club, where anybody that could swing a golf club made sure they played there. The golf course is still there, but the club house, pool and everything around the pro shop is gone. That is where I learned the meaning of working for an honest pay, caddying and carrying two bags for 18 holes for $3.60 and if the golfers were generous they tipped so you could walk away with $5.00 for a half-days work. Very seldom went out twice in one day but sometimes that would happen. SKYGUSTY, is where that club was located and that is where I grew up. Went to SKYGUSTY Elementary School, Grades 1 through 6, then on the bus and down to Gary High School. I was there until the end of 10th Grade and my family moved to Florida. Would have graduated there in 1973 and did but from a high school in DeLand, Florida. I call Florida home now but have never forgotten the life in the mountains there in SKYGUSTY, WV. My dad is buried there, as are most of my aunts and uncles, my grandparents and just about every one else from that area. So much to write, so many memories, time nor space allows but ....If you know me, write at the above address... If you would like to know me, write at the above address...
