Comments:Hello to you all,

Have just read the story of Sgt, Bill Genaust plus watched the movie about Guy Babaldon. Why is it that Acts of Valour are mostly downgraded by "Pen Pushers" and those safely behind the lines of battle. I hope you are successfuly in your attempts to correct it for these and many others never given the their due.
As a daughter in law of the late Lieutenant (T/Captain) Reginald Charles Loxton Bayliss MBE of the English Army I know that I would feel cheated if he had not been honoured for his service.

It was very interesting reading about Sgt. Bill Genaust, and I am sure that Col. Dixson ment every thing that he said, As I served at Leatherneck as a marine photographer and worked with Col. Dixon and also Capt. Louis Lowery, who took the photo of the original flag raising. I know its 2010 and I was woundering how everythings turned out.

although too young for "War service" I served in the

My thoughts are always of the Brave men,and Women,

It makes me proud that I have such a family.. My Father retired a colonel after surviving the front lines in the Korean war. I have deep pride in them for what they had to go through so that we could live free. Honored to know that Bill was my uncle... and such a good man.

Sgt Genaust's filming thereof along with sound tracks etc.,could be prepared by person/persons or patriotic organizations with resources and capabilities. This historic event is a reminder of supreme sacrafices by heroes protecting the freedoms we currently enjoy.

The stories my father told about Iwo Jima was beyond imagine. All those who were injured or lost their lives should always be remembered for ever. Franklion Roosevelt stated: " A Date remembered in infamy" could very well be used in reference to the battles that resulted from the Day of Infamy. Iwo Jima is one of those battles and all those young men that so proudly served, should be served by remembering them for Infamy! I say the country should do all they can to recognized all those who served so gallantly and proudly. Sgt Bill Genaust should be the start of this.

Just a note regarding William Genaust. I've been doing the genealogy of my wife's family and it turns out that Sgt Genaust's widow is a first cousin once removed of my wife. While I don't have any pictures of Genaust,
I do have a couple of his wife, Adelaide. She was the daughter of Ole Hanson who immigrated to this country from Norway. It is neat to put interesting notes in a family tree. Sort of makes the ancestors a little more real.

Comments:I just received in the mail from one of my sisters, who know of my interest in military history, the "Parade" from Sunday 2/20 with "The Forgotten Hero" on its cover, and I was both glad of the information surrounding Sergeant Genaust's bravery and saddened at his untimely loss and nonrecoverable state and unjust lack of recognition for his filmwork, which was no less significant than that of Joe Rosenthal's famous picture, eventually further immortalized by the War Memorial that overlooks my home city of Washington. But reading The Man We Left Behind brought me to tears with the line "Tell Bill Genaust we're coming back for him," and I only hope that by now he has received fully whatever wrongly unawarded honors he deserves. I cannot imagine how it was that those who risked their lives so bravely in the filming of battle scenes were not duly credited, but both they as well as Sergeant Genaust should have been recognized and honored for their heroism. That would be the ideal solution. But for me the name of Sergeant Genaust will stand in for all those others whose works I had also seen over the years, and I will look upon the War Memorial with a renewed sense of respect, gratitude and pride. I salute his memory and that of his fellows, and may they never again be "forgotten."

Comments:I must say in reading the story of Sgt Bill Genaust it is one of the most war hero stories that I think I have read in a long time. Its a shame that he could not survive in order to receive the medal himself. The things this soldier did, despite the danger before him, it was like the man felt no inner fear at all. He was a true Marine, like he was the leader to follow the Officer's motto, an officer is the first to show and the last to follow. And also, no man will be left behind. I think in this case, that it was a very difficult move to make to leave him there, but it was also a dangerous decision to make on his part to go into that cave thinking that it was empty of the Japanese, with the flashlight shining right in their faces, only for them to open fire on him. Did anyone ever find out if there was anything thing left to identify him since this was done at such close range. I can't believe the things this soldier did, always in harm's way, and he beat it everytime except for the last time he was faced with the danger. this man was not just a soldier but an amazing one. He held true to the face of danger, to the fact that he was a soldier, that he held up under all kinds of danger where others couldn't and didn't. I am so glad that you were able to contact dickson (It think, I draw blanks very fast), to confirm that he did in fact put in the paperwork for this SGT to receive this precious, well deserved medal. Again, I just wish he could have stayed alive long enough for him to be able to acept this in person. What a wonderful story. I am glad that I found your site, I found it through searching for other things more relevant to my website. A remarkable story, for him and for his wife to held strong during the days her husband spent in this war and kept the home fires burning waiting for him to come home. I am sure that when the news wwas deliveed to her that her husband did not make it that it tore her up inside but I am also sure that she knew he died doing what was important to him and that was to defend his country. Great job and coverage on this story.

Comments:Semper Fi to all Marines, past, present, and our future Leathernecks. Sgt Genaust, you WILL NOT be forgotten. Rest in peace. I was on Iwo Jima, as the Battle Sites Guide for the SecNav in April 2001 and there are many tunnels still open (I took the SecNav down into one we found, that had been undiscovered since 1960 or so.) The island is a place of honor and if Sergeant Genaust is never found, his shade rests with many other heroes, their spirits aided by the fact that we Marines continue to march on...could it ever be different? From 1775 to Fallujah, Iraq, Marines CONTINUE TO LEAVE OUR MARK. May it ever be so.

Comments:Yes, Will. It must have presented quite a psychological conflict, and probably still does, to make the decision between "shooting" and shooting. I'd imagine many of our war photographers were faced continuously with the choice of saving lives, including their own, and documenting history for the next generations. It fairly leaves one in awe. Bill carried both camera and weapon so he always had to make a measured choice. And he was a man who didn't take his responsibilities lightly.
Your praise of the Yankees is good to hear. My dad, Bill's brother-in-law, served in the South Pacific and he thought very highly of the Australian troops. I remember him saying that if he needed someone to watch his back he would be glad if it were an Aussie.

My dad was in North Africa in the the Torch Landings, biggest convoy in history, he would say. always spoke highly of Americas involvement in WW2. Wouldn`t have won it without the yanks. From a die hard Yorkshireman praise indeed. Sorry to shift the theatre from pacific to north africa, but the war was on many fronts!

We owe it to our fallen comrades to make sure they return home. Comments:I am a Nephew of Addy (Genaust) Dobbins and have since I first met him in the early 1940's held William (Sgt. Bill) Genaust in such high regard.

I and My Cousin from Mankato have been charged to be the keepers of important memorabilia so that interested Family and Friends would have a chance to see the original documents signed by such dignitaries as the Secretary of Defense (James Forrestal) and Commandant of the Marine Corps (General Vandegrafe). Future Generations of our Family will appreciate this documentation to validate what those of us who knew him already knew. Sgt. Bill Genaust was truly an American Hero. Many, under certain circumstance, will respond in heroic ways. Very few will keep on responding with Heroic ways time after time, day after day.

Our concern was that a wider audience be shown what a rare person and soldier Bill was. We are so greatful that this is being done through this very medium. The efforts of those untiring individuals seeking higher honors must be recognized.

If nothing else happens, it is just a wonderful reward to read about Iwo Jima in the book "Imortal Images" by Tedd Thomey. Everyone should have a copy. If not the whole book then the very least everyone should be required to study the face and eyes of Sgt. Genaust on the photo in the middle of this book, after page 90. This was a photo featured in the Washington DC papers. The Man behind the camera may have taken Immortal Images but his face belies having seen far too many mortal ones. Perhaps a face not too concerned about future awards. Given enough of a rest to think about it, the best award all who made the great sacrifice would ask is to appeciate the price of our democracy. Thanks again and again to Tedd Thomey.

Comments:The following is a copy of a letter I recently sent to Mr. Frank Clynes. It was not deliverable:
Dear Mr. Clynes,
I have only recently stumbled upon Dick Gaines' web site where you are quoted extensively regarding my uncle, Bill Genaust. I do remember several phone conversations with you regarding the letter from Lt. Col. Dickson recommending Bill for the Navy Cross. If I remember correctly, you wanted me to send the original copy to you. Since this is such an important part of my family's history, I'm sure you can understand my reluctance to relenquish it to someone whom I do not know. I believe I did offer to mail you a photocopy.
Your careless comment about "the niece" in MN not even opening the box of memorabilia from Bill's widow irritates me. If you remember I was experiencing serious health problems at that time and had informed you that when I was well enough I planned to deal with the material in the most acceptable way according to family members' wishes. My Aunt Adelaide and I were as close as mother and daughter and it was not by mistake that she entrusted me with those cherished possessions.
As you know, according to family concensus, the memorabilia was loaned for display to the Pipestone Historical Society in southern MN. That is where Bill graduated high school.
This was done for the convenience of remaining family members who remember Bill and would be traveling periodically to this area.
Bill was a humble man. Certainly you can understand that, as much national significance as these items hold, Bill would probably have wanted family to enjoy them before his more extensive recognition.
Contrary to the statement that the letter was "secured" from the museum in Pipestone I am assured by the curator there that the original remains in their possission. He and I are currently in the process of making plans for the future home of the items.
Because there has been considerable encouragement from Marines around the country to place them in the National Marine Museum I am considering that as an eventual appropriate final placement.
In the meantime I must say that I feel publicly maligned by your characterization of me as being indifferent to the
issue. I would appreciate a clarification on said web site. If you choose not to clarify our miscommunication, I will do so.
In closing, let me also say that I appreciate your and others' effort to have Bill's work rewarded with continuing recognition. Thank you for all the energy you have put into this endeavor. I am open to any suggestions you may have regarding this matter.

Keep up the good work. Yes, the Sgt. deserves the Navy Cross and he deserves to be brought home. Yet, he resides not on that island, but in the heart and soul of any patriot. Medals, decorations, commendations are all great , and they serve a valuble purpose. The highest award a man can get is a hand written letter from his C.O. attesting to his fidelity and bravery. If he were in my family, that letter would be framed and hung in a prominent place.

He was one of the members of Mike Strank's squad who took part in the second flag raising. Joe was gathering rocks while the second flad went up, and was just outside Rosenthal's frame. For the Marines and Marine Option Midshipmen at the NROTC unit at the University of Michigan, the battle of Iwo Jima and the flag raisings hold a special place among Marine Corps history, as it does for many people. Our esteem is all the more greater for those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Sgt. Genaust indeed may not need this honor, but for the family he shares in the Marine Corps. Above all, like all of those men from those horrific battles, their names and their memory should never be lost to our memory. That is the very least we own them.

I just recently came into possession of artwork by Donald L. Dickson. I am told it is Combat Art, 1st Division, US Marine Corp. Okinawa, 1945.What I have is a two-sided piece; on the front a marine is staring at a helmet and rifle on the ground. There are spent shells and an opened first aid kit. On the reverse side there are 3 separate depictions of marines; one sitting eating his C-rations,the second standing and staring, and the third reading a bulletin board with the "Latest Dope".It appears to me that even though this was framed to showonlythe front side, that it is from a book or magazine. If anyone can shed any light on these, please contact me. Thanks Lon PS: Sadly, I am not a Marine; but was in the Army 64 to 66and recall that a WWII vet continually referred to me as a Remington Raider.

Perhaps weight could be added to this effort if a special honor was made in Sgt. Genaust's memory by the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences, (during the academy awards).

I found this site searching for info as to current status of IWO and who still lies in the cemeteries today. Today I was amazed to find out that the Japanese military now holds this island.

I have a few original prints of IWO and the 3rd and 4th Marine Div. Iwo cemeteries, with prints of the memorial on Iwo built on the spot of the flag raisings. The memorial was built bt the 31st NCB, (my father served in 31stNCB).

It's very important those of us later generations hear the truth of the price paid by all who served in the USMC for our freedoms, taken so lightly by so many.

I would appreciate any assistance in locating the magazine.

READ BELOW:
Associated Press photographer, Joe Rosenthal, made three photographs atop Suribachi, a Japanese observation post on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. His first picture became the most reproduced photograph in history and won for him a Pulitzer Prize. His third photograph became the source of accusations that the first picture had been set-up. The first picture is the image most remembered. It shows six soldiers erecting a large, American flag on a long, diagonally slanted flagpole. Rosenthal's third shot shows 18 soldiers smiling and waving for the camera under that same flag./13

The confusion over the authenticity of the famous photograph resulted from Rosenthal's casual response to a correspondent back at Guam. The reporter congratulated Rosenthal on the image and then asked if it was posed. Thinking that the writer meant the third picture, Rosenthal admitted that it had been set-up. Speaking of the famous picture, he rightly argues that "Had I posed the shot, I would, of course, have ruined it. I would . . . have made them turn their heads so that they could be identified for AP members throughout the country."/14 Writing of the Rosenthal image, picture editor, Harold Evans in his book Pictures on a Page, notes that "no genius could have posed the picture if he had spent a year in a studio with lights and a wind machine."/15 Lucky for photojournalism, Rosenthal did not carry a wind machine to the top of Iwo Jima.

Technological threat to integrity
There is currently a serious threat to the integrity of photojournalism images. Computer technology allows individuals to manipulate photographs to such an extent that alterations cannot be detected. As has been stated, such sleight-of-hand is not new. Those who believed in the Spiritualism movement believed in the photographs as well. Those who were unsophisticated as to the double exposure and composite tricks that could be accomplished by a darkroom technician were fooled by the April Fool and political photographs. Those who are cynical and perhaps professionally envious believe that Capa convinced a buddy to act as if he were being killed by a bullet in the head, Rothstein carried a skull in his suitcase, and Rosenthal directed the flag-raising photograph.

Computerized digital retouching involves more than suspicions about a photograph's authenticity. Companies such as Scitex, Hell Graphic Systems, and Crosfield have computers that can be used by newspaper, magazine, and book publishers to manipulate photographs that were originally intended to be classic, documentary accounts of real events.

this year. At the end of this year, I will have had 4 years
in the program. We have been taught the meaning of Honor,
Courage, and Commitment for the last three years. Not to
mention, Marine Corps knowledge and history. I was
extrememly touched by this story of a couragous and
honorable Marine. We have studied the raising of the flag
on Iwo Jima. The summer after my freshman year, we took a
trip to a Marine Corps base and had a miniture version of
boot camp at Little Creek, Virginia. It was something I
will never forget. On this trip, we visited Washington,
D.C. I'd been to Washington, D.C. before but I had not seen
the Iwo Jima monument until that trip. It was extremely
emotional for all of us. God Bless Sgt Bill Genaust for
having the talent to take such accurate footage and to
capture history on film. I pray he receives the honor he
deserves. Let's hope the government makes the right choice
and honor such a wonderful man. Good luck, God Bless, and

After "Boots" I was sent to serve in the 1st MP Co., 1sr Marine Div. in Teientsin, China. It was at this time that five Marines were "slaughtered" by Communists while guarding an obsolete ammo dump a few miles from the city. It was my understanding that they were standing guard with EMPTY RIFLES ! Something to do with China being a friendly nation, The Nationalists were in charge. It was required, also, the 45 on my hip be empty! Those 5 Marines certainly deserve their medals, too. Comments:I very much enjoyed the recent special "Heroes of Iwo Jima". It seems a pity to me we don't see more of the work Sgt. Genaust and other combat photographers paid such a price to capture. In the years following the War there were many excellent documentaries utilizing such footage (ex: "Victory At Sea"), but modern producers must feel they're boring us when they include unedited footage. Too bad. Nothing Hollywood can concoct measures up to the real thing.

He passed on 5 years ago, so I'm a day late but playing catch up to learn more about this period in his life. I saw the A&E presentation on the "Heroes of Iwo Jima" and I now understand why my father refused to go underground or into caves. Until seeing this depiction of that valiant effort, I was unaware of Sgt. Bill Genaust, now I know...and he should come home and he should be recognized for his service to the nation.

Comments:I salute the effort being put forth on behalf of Sgt.
Genaust. The modern military seems to have a strange sense
of what deserves medals, and after reading your page, I see
that this trend is not new. I would suggest that two medals
should be earned, one for his part on Saipan, and the other
for the filming he did on Iwo Jima. In doing his job, he
has made it possible for future generations see one of our
countries most emotional moments. Even though his is not the
work everyone remembers, he captured the REAL flag raising,
the FIRST on the island. The second one which everyone
remembers is beautiful, but it was re-enacted. Sgt. Genaust
deserves not one but two medals.
