Just found this during a trawl for my old school (Stretford Grammar).

Born in Urmston Cottage in 1949, moved to Stretford not too long after, then to Chorlton cum Hardy, then back to Urmston where my mother still lives.

Me - I've been travelling since I was 21. Zambia, Iraq, Nigeria, Ireland, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Hungary, a couple of short spells in Brunei and Yugoslavia, and then Ukraine. Now sweating it out in Jamaica.

Would love to hear from anyone Urmstonians (Urmstonites?) who remember me from the old alma mater. Or indeed anyone else who would like to get in touch.

years) but I am an visitor because I was born the other
side of the "water", being from Swinton. Davyhulme was a
nice place to live in until they built the Trafford Centre,
& now we just have conjestion every weekend. I live 5
minutes walk away but 10 minutes drive away from the
Traffic Centre. Peel Holdings are just greedy landlords,
unconcerned with just what they have forced on locals. The
Traffic Centre may have created 6000 jobs but most of them
are part time, lowly paid jobs that have just been pinched
from other shopping areas.

I knew the area best from about 1966 to 1990, I went to Wellacre Infants, Juniors and secondary school. I met my first wife at the Urmston Baths (It's got a lot to answer for). Like Martin Haughton(mentioed above) I used to go to the Princess Rooms Discos, with all the fights outside from the Irlam mob. I also used to go to the Curzon a lot. Too many memories to note down here.

I still live in the Manchester area, although its now on the wrong side, towards Oldham. I'd love to move back to the area but aren't the housing prices a bit steep!

If anyone remembers me drop me a line. If I ever offended anyone in the past I apologise but hey that's life.

Comments:I own the timbered house featured in the Church Rd section. The central part of the house (the black and white part) dates back to 1672, the brick areas are considered to date from around 1800 but we have no evidence to substantiate it. The house also features the mark IFW which I take to refer to the Wright family who were land owners in the area at that time. Originally two houses, we have been told that it was one house for much of the 20th century. Does anyone have any old photographs or historical data on the house ??

Comments:Hi all, I was born in Fallowfield, Manchester, in 1925 and moved to Urmston when I was around four. Cumberland Road was home until I moved to work at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farrnborough. My next move was to Armstrong Siddeley, Coventry, which eventually became Bristol Siddely and finally Rolls Royce. In 1964 we - I was now married to Marie with four children - moved to Toronto, Canada and two years later to Allegany, New York to work in the oil and gas industry in place of the aircraft industry. We are still in Allegany but now retired. Over the years we have visited Urmston many times and in fact in March this year we met some of my cousins (one from Flixton and one from Rochdale) for lunch at the Roebuck Hotel. I have a few "school photos" of myself and also my brother - Norman Swirles Martin born 1923 - which maybe of interest to the group. Please advise if I should send them to you. Best wishes to all in Urmston and surrounding areas. Cheers.

I blame the council and the parents of unruly children!!
It's still a nice area in parts, property prices have shot through the roof since the Trafford Centre opened.
I used to work behind the bar at the Garrick's Head pub and miss the disco nights out at either The Sands discoteque or Heartlands in Trafford Park (Heartlands now raised to the ground.) Another good night out used to be Corkers within Urmston town centre :)

Comments:Hello, fellow Urmstonians.
My name is Arthur Hilditch, and I lived in URMSTON from birthdate (1930) till 1945.
Now you know how old I am !

My family resided in rented houses at Stretford Road (39 and 25), also on Manor Avenue (Roslyn).

Attended local schools and finished up at Urmston Grammar School ... with Mr Baker as Headmaster. Left there, to join Boys Army Apprentices, and travelled many parts of the world.

My father (George William Hilditch) was the Organist at St Clements Church for 44 years, and taught music (piano, organ, violin) until his death in 1966.

I remember the War Years best (1939-45), and the many restrictions in travel, and the Air Raids.

I have a school photo (taken in 1937)showing myself and classmates. I would be pleased to email this photo to anyone interested. Some of the names I remember from those days .... Pat Hemmings, Edith Taylor, Ronnie Appleton (from Wentworth Ave), Allan Theiss, Taffy Williams, Molly Ashworth, Joyce Salmon, and many others.
I am now gracefully retired (?) in Spain, and living the life, with wife (Marjorie)

I can usually browse the internet on a daily basis, and was interested to see this website.

Anyone who contacts me, preferably by email, will be assured of an answer.....

p.s. you can have my old umbrella ... I recall the awful Urmston weather !!!!

Recuardos. Arthur Hilditch.

Comments:What an interesting site. I enjoyed it very much. While I have never liver in the area, I have visited several times in the 70s and 80s as my mother grew up in Flixton and my grandparents lived at 24 The Crescent. Their names were Alice and Norman Jones. My Mum, who now lives in South Western Ontario, was called Norma Jones but she moved to Canada in 1958. While my Mum is not that adept at the internet, I will show her this site and I’m sure she would love to hear from anyone who might remember her or her parents.

Thanks again for a great read.

Greetings from Australia!

I was so delighted to find your website recently. I was actually born in Urmston Cottage Hospital in March 1953 and lived in Flixton until emigrating with my parents and younger sister (Susan) in September 1964. Although I appreciated the wide open spaces of rural Australia, I never got over leaving Urmston and I have never been back.

I lived close to Abbotsfield Park and used to go to the Urmston Show every year and was fortunate enough to attend the Beatles concert in August 1963. I have often told people how I watched the Beatles sing "Twist and Shout" 12 times - I am sure many don't believe it. We went home (Weston Avenue) before the concert ended and sat up in our bedroom window where we could look down into the large tent and in fact had a better view as our home was just across the railway line.

I spent a lot of time playing at my friend's house (Susan Kelly) at Shaw Town Farm, just off Chasson Road, near the allotments. I bet it isn't there anymore. The old farm was a fascinating place to be, with cobblestone areas, interesting outbuildings and a fantastic pear orchard.

Thanks for creating such an interesting website.

Best regards,

Lynda Smith

Don't know if this is the right place to post, but here goes. Bit of a long shot, but one must cast one's bread upon the waters... I'm researching my Family Tree and recently obtained my mother's birth certificate which shows she was born October 1938 at home at 88 Church Road, Urmston to Hugh Sellers and Bertha Henshaw. Any information about Church Road, or the Sellers or Henshaw sides.

Comments:I was born in 6 Park Avenue Urmston in Aug 1940. The even numbered houses have now gone to make way for a car park. The odd numbered houses are still there. Opposite my house was Urmston bowling green and it was one early morning when I and my brothers and sister looked out of front window that we notice 4 large black holes in the green. We had just escaped from being hit by a stick of incendiary nbombs.
We moved to 112 Broadway in 1950 before the new estates were built. Our playground used to be the local tip ( a housing estate is now built upon it), and many were the times when we nearly got ourselves blown up by dropping lit matches into 5 gallon cans of unknown liquids. I worked as a projectionist for a couple of years at the Palace Cinema on Station Road also the Empress Cinema. We moved to the prefabs on Broadway in 1955 until my parents moved to Cornwall and retirement in 1961. The prefab estate has now been demolished. I attended Urmston Primary and Urmston Junior schools before going on the the Old Grammar school and finally Flixton Secondary Modern School. I left school and started my first job at Manchester Oil Refinery near Barton Bridge in 1955.

My parents lived at Shaw Hall when they first got married around 1950, and told me many stories about the property. Then later moved to Shaw Town farm, at the time my father worked for the Closes' at Acre Gate Farm. I re- visited Flixton 13th Sept 2008 taking a trip down memory lane, it was fantastic to return back. It would be brilliant to hear from anyone who remembers our family, or anyone who attended the infants school Delamere rd, 2nd year in 1962.I think the Head teacher was Mrs Thompson?? I can remember the blitz on Manchester, and waking up and seeing the red glow over Manchester from the fires. We'd slept the night under our dining table for protection as air-raid shelters had yet to be supplied. That morning my aunt walked to her office in Manchester, as the trains weren't running. Over the last 3 miles she and her friend were walking over broken glass. They found that their office was the only one still standing in King Street, and were sent home by the caretaker who was still at his post.

I went to Urmston County Infants and Primary Schools, where my grandfather, Donald Stewart JP was a school governor. I was taught to play piano by Mrs Heywood who lived in Urmston, and I thought she was very good.

We moved to Cheadle, Cheshire in 1949.

Comments:This is my annual reminder that www.urmston.net is a hot page to visit if you want to read about Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme, the past. There is so much on the site it takes hours to get through with tales, missing friends, local history, events, and a superb photo gallery. For the forum you need to be a member but to browse it is open, give it a try.

Comments:Dew to the break up of married, I moved back to Urmston In 2008, from Chorley, I was never happy there. I went to live with my son for a short while, I now have moved to Stretford, and soon met up with all my old school friends. Urmstons not the same place now, but nothing ever is, as you get older, but you never forget the old place and the people.

The schools I went to were English Martyr's, St Clements, St Paul's RC and before that Flixton Girls School.
Was friends with those who went to Flixton Youth Club dances and were at school at those times.
Remember the paper seller on Railway Bridge Urmston as he sat and his wife got balmcakes from me at Duncan and Foster when I was 16. I worked at Burtons menswear on Chester Road. I am now a research scientist and psychologist as ongoing academic discovery in my sixties now. The Beatles I remember and Hermans Hermits and Peter Noone, Ken Pearson and his mother Elvera who I did her hair for.

Comments:Like some of your contributors I have many fond memories of living in the Flixton, Urmston, Stretford, and the Manchester areas. I spent the first 21 years of my life in these places before moving to the Oxford area to work for the Atomic Energy Authority. I now reside in North Wales in my ‘Golden Age Years’.

I am writing an Autobiography and recently came across the Urmston Page on the Internet. I would very much appreciate it if anybody could add any information (histories, photos etc) on any of the areas below,

I lived in Chassen Avenue and then Lawrence Road, Flixton up the age of 21. I went to Victoria Park Junior School, Stretford (around 1943), Flixton Secondary Modern School (1948 to 1950), Stretford Technical College (day school ---- 1950 to 1952). I then went to Stretford Technical College (night school ---- 1953 to 1956), Manchester College of Technology (day release ---- 1957 to 1958). I started work at Carborundum, Trafford Park in their Research and Development Laboratory (1952).

Like many parents my own were not very well off and had some hard times in the 1940’s and 1950’s. This included living through the Second World War years with its Food, Clothing and Sweets Rationing and so on. They couldn’t give me many material things, but I was very lucky in that they taught me to work hard, respect others and to ‘stand on my own two feet’. They also gave me a good set of values to live by (not necessarily religious, but certainly humanitarian). There were no such things for us as computers, television, car transportation, mobile phones etc, but we did have a lot of freedom to play outside for hours on end and to ‘make our own fun’. Therefore we had plenty of exercise, and because of food rationing we had meagre meals (but nourishing) so we were not over loaded with fats and sugars.

I remember having a great time going to the Urmston Baths (lovely shaped pool) for swimming and dancing, Curzon, Palace and Empress Cinemas, Sidney & Dorothy Painter’s Dance Studio, Maypole Café near the Curzon (oh those gorgeous Griddle Cakes), Grimwoods and Matusi Ice Cream, Repertory Theatre in Sale, Belle Vue (Speedway and Wrestling) and Sale Locarno. I also remember the many Circuses and Fairs that came to town and the Longford Park Annual Fairs. I once walked from Flixton to Longford Park and back just to save on bus money so I had more to spend at the Fair. I actually had two half-crowns in old money to spend and felt as rich as a king !!). It took me quite a long time to save this money up via a paper round. In my late teens I enjoyed going to the Kita Nishi Kwan Judo Club (the original one in a warehouse near Great Ancoats Street, Manchester),

As I mentioned above if anybody has anything that might help ‘fill in the gaps’ of my Autobiography (photos especially) then I would very much appreciate it. I hope that my various reminiscences above help spark off some pleasant memories of your own,

Thanks to those who might be able to help, best regards to all, Peter

Comments:Just found website whilst browsing about Flixton and Urmston. I moved to Flixton (Irlam Road) in 1949, when my father, Hugh was appointed headmaster of Flixton boys secondary school. He was then the first head of Wellacre boys school until he retired in 1972. I went to Flixton junior school, then Urmston Grammar School (1955 - 1962). I then studied medicine at Manchester University, did my house jobs at Park Hospital (now Trafford General). I got married in 1969 and moved to Gatley, working in General Practice until I retired in 2006. I now divide my time between Florida and Stockport . I remember a lot of the memories that people have posted, Munich disaster, Roger Byrne's funeral, Beatle's at Urmston Show in Chassen Park, Curzon cinema, swimming baths, playing cricket at UGS and then Flixton CC for many years. I drove around the area recently, a lot had changed, but a lot was instantly recognizable and brought back memories. Keep up the good work!

Comments: I was born in London both my parents came from the north, mother Flixton and father Middlesbrough. A mixed marriage you could say!! In 1939 at the age of 6 I was evacuated to live with my Granny and Granddad at Gleneagles Road Davyhulme where my mother and father eventually joined us. Although the war was on I recall having a happy childhood doing all the things children used to do in those days. I recall we moved to Urmston and I attended the junior school there whilst my cousin Walter Lamb was at the Davyhulme School We were great rivals and when our schools played at cricket we bragged how we were going to beat each other. Unfortunately my school lost because we were all out for nought! We even got a mention in the Manchester Evening News. My mother Eva Upton (Father Walter Mother Harriet of Jack Lane)unfortunately died in 1951 at the young age of 48 and sad to say there are no photographs of her for me to pass onto my children. I came to Manchester 5 years ago to see my cousins but no luck but on my return I wrote to several Upton's in the phone book and one relative replied but again no photo. I visited Gleneagles Road for the first time for 60 years and thought the area had more than stood the test of time. I certainly wouldn't mind living there again if I was moving to Manchester. I visited there again with my son a fortnight ago when I went to Old Trafford for the first time in my life although I have supported United since I was 12. I am still trying to obtain a photo of my mother through contacts and researches in Family History so if anyone out there has an Upton Heritage and can help me I would be extremely grateful.
