We used to live at Acre Gate Farm on Flixton Road which is

It's great to see all the pictures of the area - brings
back a lot of memories - keep up the good work!
I would love to hear from anyone who knows me or remembers

Comments:Amazing, I never expected to find so much Urmston stuff on
the Web. I was born there in the Cottage Hospital (1945)
and lived near the Nag's Head in Davyhulme until approx
1966. I went to the local Primary School (near the Park)
and to UGS from '56 to '64. I remember being on a protest
march against the split when we moved to an all boys' UGS.
I worked in the UK (Cannock, London) and then moved to
Belgium in 1972. I've been away ever since - inc a spell in
Luxembourg - and I now live in Brussels working as a
freelance journalist / writer. If anyone remembers me, it
would be good to get in touch. My elder brother David lived
in the area (Urmston, Old Trafford, Timperley) all his life
until his untimely death in 1988. Good luck

Comments:Hello - my name is Malcolm Bell and I am an ex-Davyhulme
resident now living in New Zealand. I was surfing around
looking for any websites relating to my hometown, and I
came across your site. It was pure nostalgia. I called my
son to the computer to see photos of the hospital where I
was born, the primary school I attended and the pubs I
frequented.

I was born at Park Hospital in 1947 and then lived in
Davyhulme (Pangbourne Ave - near the Canterbury Rd shops)
until 1974. I attended the primary/junior school on
Canterbury Rd and then Urmstom Grammar. For the first
couple of years it was a co-ed school but as the baby-boom
bulge hit the school system we were split into two single
sex schools. I remenber taking part in a protest march down
Flixton Rd to drum up support to stop the split.
Interesting to see that the two single sex schools have now
merged and are back on the original site.

If you want to add to the list of famous people from
Urmston, how about the actress Judy Loe. I was in the same
class as her at primary/junior school, and again at UGS
until the split.

I emigrated to New Zealand in 1974 and was last back in the
UK in 1984. I would be interested in hearing from any old
school friends from my days at UGS (1958 to 1965)

from anyone living or had lived in the area. I left St
Paul's RC school (now St Anthony's I believe) in 1982 and
lived on Derwent Road in Flixton. I am fortunate enough to
visit the UK quite often and always manage to book a dental
appointment in on Stretford Road Dental Surgery on a market
day - you can't miss a visit to urmston market can you?! I
don't believe the centre has changed much even though they
said it would become a 'ghost town' after the Trafford
Centre was built, it just goes to show you that those good
old Urmstonians won't give up without a fight!

Comments:I was born in Urmston Cottage Hospital in 1945. Along with
my parents and 2 sisters I lived in Cornhill Road opposite
the Curzon Cinema. I attended Flixton Infants, Flixton
Junior and then Urmston Grammar from 1956 to 1961, the year
of the hive off of the boys to Bradfield Road. The
Headmaster at UGS was WH Babb with Mr Lewis as deputy. I
left Urmston in 1970 on marriage and moved to Lymm where I
still live with my family. I have many fond memories of
Urmston although I know many changes have taken place over
the years. I used to visit Urmston Baths, now sadly razed
to the ground, on a regular basis and the Curzon Cinema
particularly the Saturday matinees which inevitably
included Flash Gordon or Zorro. Even though I still live
quite close by I rarely visit Urmston, prefering to have my
memories of many happy years. If anyone remembers me I
would love to hear from them and exchange reminiscences. One
notable ex Urmston resident was Dennis Viollet, who became
one of Busby's Babes and now sadly deceased. I also seem to
recall that a member of the Hollies pop group also attended
UGS whilst I was there but I do not recall his name.

and this was a perfect introduction. The photos gave a
true feel for the area. In an attempt to locate the
parish/townland in County Roscommon, Ireland, from which
our family departed, I came across photos in a family album
with handwritten notes on the back. The photos were taken
c. 1900 by a photographer M. Hughes of Urmston. Does
anyone have any relatives who might be familiar with this
name? I am looking for Coyne and Ward surnames. Believe
these families left Ireland and may have settled in
Urmston. Would love to hear from present or former Urmston
natives. Thank you.

Im 31 and only just moved out of Urmston and had previously
lived there all my life. I miss it, even the pungant smell
drifting from the sewage works.

I lived on Hampton Rd from being born to 5 years old, then
moved to a semi Church rd till I was 26 and then moved 6
doors down to a flat right near to 'Terrys' the 'Arrods of
the North!

When slightly inebriated i often amuse my friends by
singing a song I swear I was taught at Sunday School......

"Oh let your light shine over Urmston like a beacon on a
hill, let you light shine over Urmston & keep it there
until, the lord will come from heaven and say to you well
done, let your light shine over Urmston, shine on shine on
shine on....."

Born in Urmston Cottage in 1949, moved to Stretford not too long after, then to Chorlton cum Hardy, then back to Urmston where my mother still lives.

Me - I've been travelling since I was 21. Zambia, Iraq, Nigeria, Ireland, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Hungary, a couple of short spells in Brunei and Yugoslavia, and then Ukraine. Now sweating it out in Jamaica.

Would love to hear from anyone Urmstonians (Urmstonites?) who remember me from the old alma mater. Or indeed anyone else who would like to get in touch.

nice place to live in until they built the Trafford Centre,

Traffic Centre. Peel Holdings are just greedy landlords,
unconcerned with just what they have forced on locals. The
Traffic Centre may have created 6000 jobs but most of them
are part time, lowly paid jobs that have just been pinched
from other shopping areas.

Comments:I used to live in various parts of Flixton, Urmston & Stretford.

I knew the area best from about 1966 to 1990, I went to Wellacre Infants, Juniors and secondary school. I met my first wife at the Urmston Baths (It's got a lot to answer for). Like Martin Haughton(mentioed above) I used to go to the Princess Rooms Discos, with all the fights outside from the Irlam mob. I also used to go to the Curzon a lot. Too many memories to note down here.

I still live in the Manchester area, although its now on the wrong side, towards Oldham. I'd love to move back to the area but aren't the housing prices a bit steep!

If anyone remembers me drop me a line. If I ever offended anyone in the past I apologise but hey that's life.

Bye

Mike

I've just moved to Flixton, its a nice place, with plenty to do. I'm trying to research the history of my house/street. I live in Bromley Avenue, near Flixton Station. The house is about 90 years old.

Does anybody reading this have any photographs of the immediate area? I would gladly pay any postage costs, and promise to return your photos.

Comments:I own the timbered house featured in the Church Rd section. The central part of the house (the black and white part) dates back to 1672, the brick areas are considered to date from around 1800 but we have no evidence to substantiate it. The house also features the mark IFW which I take to refer to the Wright family who were land owners in the area at that time. Originally two houses, we have been told that it was one house for much of the 20th century. Does anyone have any old photographs or historical data on the house ??

Comments:Hi all, I was born in Fallowfield, Manchester, in 1925 and moved to Urmston when I was around four. Cumberland Road was home until I moved to work at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farrnborough. My next move was to Armstrong Siddeley, Coventry, which eventually became Bristol Siddely and finally Rolls Royce. In 1964 we - I was now married to Marie with four children - moved to Toronto, Canada and two years later to Allegany, New York to work in the oil and gas industry in place of the aircraft industry. We are still in Allegany but now retired. Over the years we have visited Urmston many times and in fact in March this year we met some of my cousins (one from Flixton and one from Rochdale) for lunch at the Roebuck Hotel. I have a few "school photos" of myself and also my brother - Norman Swirles Martin born 1923 - which maybe of interest to the group. Please advise if I should send them to you. Best wishes to all in Urmston and surrounding areas. Cheers.

I blame the council and the parents of unruly children!!
It's still a nice area in parts, property prices have shot through the roof since the Trafford Centre opened.
I used to work behind the bar at the Garrick's Head pub and miss the disco nights out at either The Sands discoteque or Heartlands in Trafford Park (Heartlands now raised to the ground.) Another good night out used to be Corkers within Urmston town centre :)
Ahh the good old days.

Take care everyone.

Comments:Hello, fellow Urmstonians.
My name is Arthur Hilditch, and I lived in URMSTON from birthdate (1930) till 1945.
Now you know how old I am !

My family resided in rented houses at Stretford Road (39 and 25), also on Manor Avenue (Roslyn).

Attended local schools and finished up at Urmston Grammar School ... with Mr Baker as Headmaster. Left there, to join Boys Army Apprentices, and travelled many parts of the world.

My father (George William Hilditch) was the Organist at St Clements Church for 44 years, and taught music (piano, organ, violin) until his death in 1966.

I remember the War Years best (1939-45), and the many restrictions in travel, and the Air Raids.

I have a school photo (taken in 1937)showing myself and classmates. I would be pleased to email this photo to anyone interested. Some of the names I remember from those days .... Pat Hemmings, Edith Taylor, Ronnie Appleton (from Wentworth Ave), Allan Theiss, Taffy Williams, Molly Ashworth, Joyce Salmon, and many others.
I am now gracefully retired (?) in Spain, and living the life, with wife (Marjorie)

I can usually browse the internet on a daily basis, and was interested to see this website.

Anyone who contacts me, preferably by email, will be assured of an answer.....

artmarj@telefonica.net

p.s. you can have my old umbrella ... I recall the awful Urmston weather !!!!

Recuardos. Arthur Hilditch.

While I have never liver in the area, I have visited several times in the 70s and 80s as my mother grew up in Flixton and my grandparents lived at 24 The Crescent. Their names were Alice and Norman Jones. My Mum, who now lives in South Western Ontario, was called Norma Jones but she moved to Canada in 1958. Greetings from Australia!

I was so delighted to find your website recently. I was actually born in Urmston Cottage Hospital in March 1953 and lived in Flixton until emigrating with my parents and younger sister (Susan) in September 1964. Although I appreciated the wide open spaces of rural Australia, I never got over leaving Urmston and I have never been back.

I lived close to Abbotsfield Park and used to go to the Urmston Show every year and was fortunate enough to attend the Beatles concert in August 1963. I have often told people how I watched the Beatles sing "Twist and Shout" 12 times - I am sure many don't believe it. We went home (Weston Avenue) before the concert ended and sat up in our bedroom window where we could look down into the large tent and in fact had a better view as our home was just across the railway line.

I spent a lot of time playing at my friend's house (Susan Kelly) at Shaw Town Farm, just off Chasson Road, near the allotments. I bet it isn't there anymore. The old farm was a fascinating place to be, with cobblestone areas, interesting outbuildings and a fantastic pear orchard.

Thanks for creating such an interesting website.

Best regards,

Lynda Smith

Kicked around at the Curzon Cinima (Sat afternoon).
Also used to go to the discos at The Princess rooms. I
now write for a living, The Edinburgh Evening News, DJ

area. Some names I remeber from school, and
messin' about with are...Martin Hamilton (Head Boy @
Wellacre), Chris Evans, Kevin Smyth, stuart Pearson,
Howard Grace, Lee Mellor, Patricia Fenwick, Craig
Ducket. My claim to fame in Urmston was to have
saved a woman that had been stabbed several times
by a robber, at the sports piv on Urmston meadows.

Worked at the co-op grocery warehouse and many years at Ciba-Geigy in Trafford Park. I moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1980 and still here. Most importantly still a die hard true blue. So glad I found this site and will spend time reading. thanks.

Don't know if this is the right place to post, but here goes. Bit of a long shot, but one must cast one's bread upon the waters... I'm researching my Family Tree and recently obtained my mother's birth certificate which shows she was born October 1938 at home at 88 Church Road, Urmston to Hugh Sellers and Bertha Henshaw. Any information about Church Road, or the Sellers or Henshaw sides.

Gave up membership of Manchester Press Club and MUFC after a few years away but it was when Mam died in 2003 that the link was broken.
Great place to live, never forgotten. I loved every minute of being there. Visit occasionally and it still gives me a thrill when I walk into the "Church Inn" at "Fliccy"!!

Comments:I was born in 6 Park Avenue Urmston in Aug 1940. The even numbered houses have now gone to make way for a car park. The odd numbered houses are still there. Opposite my house was Urmston bowling green and it was one early morning when I and my brothers and sister looked out of front window that we notice 4 large black holes in the green. We had just escaped from being hit by a stick of incendiary nbombs.
We moved to 112 Broadway in 1950 before the new estates were built. Our playground used to be the local tip ( a housing estate is now built upon it), and many were the times when we nearly got ourselves blown up by dropping lit matches into 5 gallon cans of unknown liquids. I worked as a projectionist for a couple of years at the Palace Cinema on Station Road also the Empress Cinema. We moved to the prefabs on Broadway in 1955 until my parents moved to Cornwall and retirement in 1961. The prefab estate has now been demolished. I attended Urmston Primary and Urmston Junior schools before going on the the Old Grammar school and finally Flixton Secondary Modern School. I left school and started my first job at Manchester Oil Refinery near Barton Bridge in 1955.

If anyone has any film or photos of these two events, one sad, one happy I'd love to see - (OK,I'll admit it, just in case I can spot myself, or more importantly my late mother).

Remember going and knocking on Peter Noone's door as well, just in case he was in, but no luck.

Moved away in 1967, but revisted our old house in Redesmere Park Flixton last year, and it has hardly changed.

Comments:Hi there, I lived at Shaw Town Farm, Flixton with my parents Alan and Margaret and brother David between 1959 and 1962.I found it extremly disappointing to discover now that three of Flixtons most memorable properties to me have been destroyed, i.e. obviously Shaw Hall was demolished in the fifties, then in the early sixties Shaw Town Farm, and in the seventies Acre Gate Farm. My parents lived at Shaw Hall when they first got married around 1950, and told me many stories about the property. Then later moved to Shaw Town farm, at the time my father worked for the Closes' at Acre Gate Farm. I re- visited Flixton 13th Sept 2008 taking a trip down memory lane, it was fantastic to return back. It would be brilliant to hear from anyone who remembers our family, or anyone who attended the infants school Delamere rd, 2nd year in 1962.I think the Head teacher was Mrs Thompson?? If you have a school photo from that date I'm standing at the far left corner as you look at the picture.

Since they have all passed away, and I've always been homesick for my roots, I'm doing some serious thinking about coming back. I still have lots of good memories of my life there, as well as my treks (on foot)to the Urmston shops with my mum. I was only 13 when I left. I have a daughter named Kelly, who has never been to England, so we're planning a look-see trip first, before making any final plans.
