As an ALT, I can say that yes, even my college degree isn't really that useful here. I speak English, that's my qualification. I'm really enjoying my time here, but I feel like I'm getting more than the school system is. Having one native speaker come to every few classes does not a fluent classroom make; what's needed is a change in teaching style, and thankfully I work with at least one teacher who's quite good. Otherwise the English of my students is appalling. I've only been studying Japanese for 5 months, and I often have to use that when I talk to them which is fine practice for me but not so useful for them since I'm ostensibly here to help with English. So yeah, it's a lot of public relations. I just feel a bit guilty when I get my paycheck. Not too guilty, mind you, but indeed, in conclusion, it's not really English teaching I'm doing. I play office puppy for a few hours. It's fun, but not as high-falutin' as the JET literature would have people belive. Sorry, just chipping in 2 cents. I used to read Big Daikon but some of the more ignorant wankers on it annoyed me too much. | |

Dude! I just got back from a day in Shinjuku/Harajuku! It was quite fun to see the hipster kids, and I felt a bit hip myself as I rummaged through a neato thrift store and found a swank long coat for real cheap. Oh, the joys of Harajuku! I also saw that sad attempt by Shingo and Goro to get on tellie. I couldn't stop watching but it was making me cringe the whole time, especially the MC Hammer get-up and Shingo's 'I'm Japaneeeese!' exclamation. Poor guys. Oh the many joys of Japan's medical system, I could write an epic poem about them all. I'm sorry to hear that not only are you physically sick but you sound a bit heartsick and definately a little homesick as well. It's the holidays. My friend Naomi was shocked when I told her suicide rates go up in the US at Christams. We want happy togetherness, and if we don't get it, we're sad. It makes sense to me. I can't believe you actually saw Kubozuka Yosuke! The fates are smiling upon you. I wish they'd glance in my direction once in a while. Hey fates! I've been here for almost three years! She probably had a serious conversation with her PR agent after that fiasco. Still, it was funny to watch, painful, but funny. LOL, I laughed my ass off thinking about the limbless man playing soccer. Shingo's English really does suck, and that's what makes it so great. One time he had to translate "Watashi ni makasete", and he scrunched up his face and thought reeeall hard and said "You.... you can.... you can... me", and then looked all proud of himself like he had gotten it right.
