Ironic he survived all that disease thier company was devastated by to be taken out by a loner snipers bullet. He was buried in the Vicksburg Memorial Cemetary.

| Comments: | Thank you for posting your information about the 38th Iowa Infantry. My great-grandfather Samuel Bradford Califf served in Company K of the 38th. He enlisted August 09, 1862 and two of his brothers, Joseph Badger Califf and Evelyn Frank Califf both enlisted on August 15, 1862. All three enlisted at Frankville, Winneshiek Co. IA.Evelyn Califf who was wounded June 19,1863 at Vicksburg you mention on page 23 as becoming the final soldier of the 38th to die as a result of combat. He died of his wounds July 01,1863. Joseph was discharged on October 15,1863 at Carolton,LA.because of a back injury suffered in a fall that left him disabled.Samuel served through the war as sergeant, then was promoted to Captain September 10, 1863 and took command of the 26th Indiana Infantry February 18,1864 by order of Lt. Col. Hudnut.
On June 18, 1864 he was detached and assigned to command a battery of Artillery in Brownsville, Texas by order of Maj. General Herron. In September 1864 he returned from detached service to Company K by order of Col. H.M. Day and was mustered out December 31 1864 at Morganzia,LA |

| Comments: | Evelyn Califf whom was the last soldier kill in action at Vickburg is the brother of Captain S.B. Califf who is my great grandfather. My father is the youngest son of Captain Califfs youngest daughter that was born in Oregon after the whole family moved there after the war. He became a founding father of Oregon City and carried much of the cities responsibilities in the positions he held. Today I hold dearly his Captains bars, pictures and a hand written brief of his involvements in that war. The loss of his brother was very painful along with the other brother being hurt before the Vicksburg campaign. He was the commander of Ft. Brown in Texas after the groups health improved. |

| Comments: | I've enjoyed your account of the 38th IA Infantry. It really brings to life the events of that time. I did not locate the ancestor I'm researching who is supposed to have served with the 38th, enlisting 20 Aug 1862. He survived the battles...his name: Jacob H. Parson(s).

| Comments: | Excellent information! I learned more about my great-great grandfather, Josiah Woodard Spencer, who served in Company G. He was captured and incarcerated at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. After three weeks, he escaped. By "walking fences" he was able to prevent the dogs from picking up his scent and eventually made it home.
Thanks for such a valuable resource. |

| Comments: | Jacob Cline was my gggrandfather. He was in the 38th and survived Vicksburg. He claimed that he had a bayonet wound in his knee. His records indicate that there is not evidence of a bayonet wound. He mustered out with the 34th/38th. Jacob was b. 1823, he must have been one of the older soldiers in the company. |
