| Comments: | I happened on this site while I was searching for my Lockyer/Mudge family connections. My great-aunt Kathleen (Kit) Lockyer married William John (Bill) Mudge in Toronto, Ont. on July 16, 1916. My father W. R. (Bob) Edwards was her nephew. Both my dad and I had been in touch, though very consistently at all, with Muriel (Mudge) Trelford, Aunt Kit's daughter. I have lost the contact information I had for Muriel and would like to know how I can get in touch with her. Many thanks, everyone, for any help you can give me. Anne Mountifield, on Haida Gwaii, B. | Comments: | I am a teacher in Lynn, Mass. doing scholarly research on St. Stephen's Memorial Church and Charles Reddington Mudge. I am trying to determine the author of "Died at Gettysburg", the epitaph written to Charlie Mudge. The poem/verse was recited at Charles' funeral and is chiseled into the back of his gravestone. Any clues? |

I will be taking used computers for the Aboriginal and Inuit Youth Centres. I did 18600 kms last year doing the same thing all over the Northwest. The computers are a great excuse to see and feel what so few will never experience. |

My grandfather was John A Mudge, married to Jane Shirley Beale and we have some connections to Australia through her and to Malaysia through him. Now some of us are in Edinburgh, some in Switzerland and some in Norfolk. I know that the mudge clockmaker, the cartographer and the composer were our ancestors, but apart from that not much more. |

| Comments: | In Australia. Son of Burnet Patch Mudge. Grandson of Burnet William Mudge. Great grandson of Burnet Patch. GG grandson of Parmenas Pearse (born 1793). Interesting titbit, Parmenas married Laura Patch at St Olave's Church, Exeter (UK). See "Patch" bridge in Exeter. GGG grandson of Samuel, who was I think, son of Samuel (born 4/2/1724) from marriage with Agnes (Mrs Tothill). Things before this are a bit scratchy as some records in UK destroyed in WW2. Of interest, Parmenus was prof of music at Exeter university and dispatched his three sons OS on marrying his second wife who was of a like age to his sons. We think sons Burnet Patch and Samuel were sent to Australia while son named Parmenus went to Canada. This is just a family story and i would like to hear from anyone connecting with this data. |

We found the Connecticut connection just recently (we live here)and thought all our family was in the midwest and west. We Mudges are just everywhere. I have not been able to go back to England with the family yet have only found our line back to 1638 right here in CT. I would welcome emails from other Mudges perhaps we can help each other. | Comments: | Happy to see a page about Mudge family. Just started my research. My grandmother was Zella Laverne Mudge, b. 1889 in Washington state, daughter of Maurice Mudge, and granddaughter of Andrew Mudge, descended from Jarvis Mudge who settled in Boston Mass. in 1638. In Bedford, MA there is a street named Mudge Way, after the sisters Rebecca F. and Harriet M., daughter of William W. Mudge, a farmer, who settled in Bedford in 1856 and was descended from Thomas Mudge, who appears to have settled in Malden, MA in 1657, originally from Devonshire, England. According to one note on the internet, Thomas was born in 1624, but another note says that there is a record in Malden MA circa 1657 in which he states his age as 40 and wife Marie's (or Mary) age as about 30. Not sure whether Jarvis Mudge was related to Thomas Mudge, but it appears likely. |

| Comments: | Just a quick note to the generator of this page. My son, who is now twenty one, recalls distinctly attending a hunting trip with his now deceased father, Kevin Crown at a farm in Grantfork, Illinois owned by the Mudge Family. My son recalls that he, his father and a large group of adult men were camping in what he was told was "slave quarters" and that they were "haunted." I don't know if this is true or just a prank played on a small boy. But either way, something "spooked" the entire hunting party in the middle of the night and all these big, burly men packed up and fled, hastily. Just an interesting story that I remember by son telling me. |

One child a daughter was born out of that union. Robert and Eleanor had daughters and sons. Names I do recall are as follows: Robert Junior, Murray, Herbert, Eleanor. The daughter's name from the first marriage was Lorretta. This branch of the Herrod family was and some still live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. There are also Herrods in the Buffalo area. After my brother passed away, the elders of our family gave each family a copy of the family tree. Micah Mudge was one of my grandfathers. Makes me so proud. My branch of the family tree are farmers in Northern Illinois. Farming and being with nature ruins through our veins. It is something special that I cherish. |

| Comments: | Hello, I have just discovered your site in my beginning searches for my father's family. -- My father is Harry Otto Mudge born Hamilton, Ontario Canada May 13, 1931. From what I have learned from my parents, who are now gathering more info, names & dates for me. My father's family was from the Torquay, Plymouth area and were master shipbuilders. Having also been a history enthusiast I have now decided to research the family history (also for passing along to my daughters who in school are having to do biographies and family trees and are expressing an interest in where there family is from and would eventually would like to visit both my family's heritage as well as that of my ex-husband's who is of Italian descent). My father father's name is Harry Mudge ( I believe my grandfather passed away in the 1940's when my Dad was just 13 years old My grandfather was the 2nd husband for my grandmother - Jenny Simms -- still getting further info on them. Jenny Simms was from Augustusberg Germany. I would love to hear from anyone who can start to shed some light on the "family history". My parents: Harry and Margaret (nee Margaret Edythe Allen, and my mother's family were from England as well) were married September 8, 1956 in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. Some coincidences have ocurred as I have started researching. It all began with a drawing presence to English, Scottish and Irish history. Since I never travelled, these areas have recently had a strong pull for me and hope in my continuing research to visit areas discovered in my family history. I have discovered some early research and trying to find relationships for a Sarah Mudge born May 12 1811 in Torquay (this feels like such a coincidence since I have a daughter Sarah Margaret Rossi born May 13 1988,-- I don't know if there is a connection but the dates are very coincidential maybe there is a relationship???? and wouldn't it be interesting to find a kindred spirit) My family has always been drawn to the water -- as sailors, etc -- and horses. My father built boats as a hobby -- may be there is something in the bloodlines for this affinity. I could ramble on forever as I am just beginning my search. Please feel free to contact me if you can start to shed some light on my beginning family discoveries. Respectfully Christina |

| Comments: | So far, I don't know of anyone who has been able to go back further than the Am. Rev. ANDREW COLLINS who died in Wake Co. NC. He had a large family, and I do not have much information on many of his children, other than their names, except for his son, CREED COLLINS, who was in the War of 1812. Creed left NC for GA, then finally to Dale Co. AL (probably lived in what is now Coffee Co. AL due to boundary changes, however). Around 1858, Creed and most of his children, including son, Andrew Collins m. Rutha ?, came to Texas, settling in the Newton/Jasper Co. area. They are found on the 1850 Census for Newton Co. TX. SOME of the children married in that area, and some remained in that area, but others eventually moved to Montgomery Co. TX, area of Conroe. Supposedly, our Andrew moved there as well, but no one knows where or when he died.....except to say it was before 1870. Andrew's son, James Dillon Collins, was in the Civil War. After the war, he went to the area of Leon Co. TX where he is shown in 1870 as a newly married man with two small girls---the oldest who died after age 2, and the youngest, being our ancestor, Lydia Ann. James Dillon probably went to Leon Co. to be near his wife's family, who he had probably known prior to Leon Co (they may have come into the Newton Co. TX area when they first came to TX from MS after 1850 as some of the Rutherfords married in that county). It is not known where James Dillon Collins married Martha Jane Rutherford---no license has been located. Martha Rutherford's parents were Lindsey James Rutherford and Hetty Hodges, daughter of Edmund Hodges and Sarah McClain. The youngest daughter of Edmund and Sarah was Sarah Hodges who m. James Minet Charles Pierson Hallmark. James Minet and Sarah (called Sallie) were the PARENTS of Wm. Jackson JACK Hallmark who m. Lydia Ann Parthena Collins and the PARENTS of Linzy Dee Hallmark who m. Hettie Jane Collins, and the PARENTS of Jacob Newton JAKE Hallmark whose daughter Lou, I believe it was, who married John David DEE Collins. His son is/was Lois Onis Collins who was my father. |

| Comments: | After looking at your home page I realised that I wasn't the only Mudge on the net looking for a piece of family history. My father Trevor G. Mudge has tracked our presents back to 1848 when we believe the first Mudge was to enter Australia setting up home at a small coastal South Australian town called Streaky Bay. The local museum has just about the full history of the early Mudge's in Australia along with many photographs, unfortunatly they dont have a web site, but if any one is in the neighbourhood they dont mind talkig about the Mudge history. By the way I live in Perth Western Australia and would enjoy talking to other Mudges. I have enjoyed this site and you can expect more hits from the Mudges in West Aust. thank you Daniel Mudge |

| Comments: | I have enjoyed your website tremendously for sometime now -- I can't wait to see what changes you have in store! Your information has helped me flesh out Fanny "Eva" DeWitt's descendants. I am a descendant of Isaac M. DeWitt (December 07, 1827 - September 11, 1896) as follows: Isaac/Osee Dan/Harry Gardner/Alyce Priscilla/Ken DeWitt Thomas. I thought you might be interested in the following information about Isaac in my genealogy research: "Isaac DeWitt enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and fought in the ranks until the close of the war, in one battle receiving a severe wound in the hand. Upon the signing of articles of peace he was given an honorable discharge, but the wound in his hand had incapacitated him for delicate work, so that he was compelled to abandon his trade. He engaged in farming operations and lumber dealing until his death, holding membership in the Grand Army of the Republic." (Source: Hitchcock, F.L. (1914). History of Scranton and Its People. Volume 2, Page 20504. Reprinted in Priscilla (Hazzard) Webber, DeWitt Family Genealogy.) "Isaac M. DeWitt, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War, having served as a sergeant in the 28th Volunteer Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was a native of Pennsylvania and prominent in the lumber business at Tunkhannock." (Source: History of Lackawanna County, page 1101.) "Your great-grandfather (Isaac) was a tanner and was born in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania. Prior to the Civil War he decided that Illinois was better and moved there. Osee was born there. I guess he was disenchanted for it only lasted two years and Isaac moved back, settled in Tunkhannock and became a tanner again (a good one). He had an illustrious Civil War career (took his own horse). He was a member of Company B, Pennsylvania Cavalry under the command of General Sherman. They were expert horsemen and were forward scouts and the eyes and ears for General Grant. He was saber wounded at Todd's Tavern (above Richmond) in 1864 and was mustered out in June 1864. He was also with General Sherman when they devastated the south and Sherman swept from Atlanta to the sea. He suffered from dysentery and never fully recovered. He returned to Tunkhannock and was a tanner and a farmer. He is buried in Sunnyside Cemetery." (Source: Correspondence from Clarence Wolever to Priscilla in Priscilla (Hazzard) Webber, DeWitt Family Genealogy.) "I remember my Mother telling me that when her grandfather (Isaac) was tilling his garden when a group of men passed by on their way to fight in the war. Her grandfather set his hoe against the fence, went inside the house to kiss his wife goodbye and set off with the men to join the army." (Source: Priscilla (Hazzard) Webber, DeWitt Family Genealogy. Includes photos of the tombstones.) Isaac, his wife Lucy, and their youngest son Walter are buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. There are the DeWitt headstone and markers for Walter, Mother, and Father. These stones are in the first row next to the fence by the road to the right as you enter the gate. ___ I also have this information on Eva (Fanny): Eva (Fanny Evaline) is buried in an old cemetery at Vosburg, south of Russell Hill. (Source: Priscilla (Hazzard) Webber, DeWitt Family Genealogy. Includes photo of tombstone.) I haven't visited the gravesite yet, but plan to on my next trip out east. Thanks again!!! Ken. |

| Comments: | I am originally form Brixham in S.Devon (the hotbed of the Mudge dynasty). I was originally told that the name came from sailors in the Spanish Armada who had escaped from prison in Plymouth and settled in S.Devon, could anyone shed any light on this theory for me. |

| Comments: | Fellow Mudges, It was great to see a Mudge webpage. After reading about Benjamin Franklin Mudge, I had to go get the book my grandmother (ruth Mudge b.1912-87) gave me , Genealogical, biographical and historical account of the name Mudge in America from 1638 to 1868, by Alfred Mudge 1868, Boston Ma. My great grandfather was Harding Portar Mudge(1887-1960) and his father was James Franklin Mudge (1844). He lived in Kansas for a while. I have some photocopies of notes my great-grandfather made about his father's adventures in the west. Please let me know if I can be of any help in your Mudge research. I can send you a copy of the book if you like. It has some information about the Mudges before they came to Ma. from Devon, England. Harding Mudge Bush Jr. |

| Comments: | Like many others I was surfing the net, running names and decided to check my maiden name. Mudge was not a common name in Oregon where I lived from age 10 on. However this Mudge clan hails from South Dakota. My grandfathers name was William Mudge, he died in a car accident around 1938 in western S. Dakota. He was married to Effie Stewart. Any info on this branch of the Mudge clan would be greatly appreciatted. |

| Comments: | I am glad I found your homepage again. I enjoyed reading abour B.F. Mudge and viewing the pictures of the Mudge men. I was looking for a resemblance to my sons. I may have found a couple. My late husband Thomas S. Mudge was born in Flat River, Mo. His father was George Stephen Mudge and mother Edith Moore Mudge. Greatparents George Samuel Mudge and Eva Harkness Mudge from Lenawee, MI moved to MO in 1899. I think they were originally from Buffalo, N.Y. Do you have a connection to the Mudges of Missouri? |

| Comments: | My great-grandmothers' maiden name was Jessie Arnold, she was born in Liverpool, England, and came to the USA about 1850. She lived possibly with a married older sister in Brooklyn, New York. She married Olof Benson and moved to Chicago, Il. Older relatives relate that for years Jessie had an oil painting hanging in her house of an Admiral Mudge. He was a homely looking gentleman, and was supposed to be a relative. I believe he may have been Jessie's grandfather, as the years would fit. I have discovered there was an Admiral Mudge! Anyone know more about this family? |
