| Comments: | I began with The Meteor Menace in 1965, and have remained hooked since. I completed my reading collection one issue at a time over 27 years, then completed a mint, first edition collection since 1993. Naturally, bitten by the collecting bug, I finally began my quest to acquire a complete pulp collection on May 22, 2003, and to date, am just 18 shy of success. Of course, EBay has helped, but I have also met several wonderful dealers willing to assist me with their great knowledge of the genre( and the occasional discount )in my endeavor. Personally, I find the pulps( particularly the pre digest issues )to have far more eye appeal than the paperbacks, not to mention the character that age, patina, and yes, even aroma combines to make the pulps a tangible part of history. I am also a big fan of movies of the Doc Savage era, and feel the pulps actually help recreate the ambience of the times. As romanticized as this sounds, I've also learned some practical lessons about collecting pulps during my hunt, and would love to share mutual experiences with similar hunters. To those who don't yet collect pulps... Even if you can't afford the complete pulp collection( and it IS expensive ),I highly recommend that you buy at least one or two, maybe your own personal favorites...then you too will own a real piece of Americana. Finally, if you have a line on the first 4 pulps...Thanks for listening! See you at PulpCon32. |

| Comments: | It took a long time for me to find Bantam Book #96 - Mystery On Happy Bones. I finally did last summer at, of all places, a garage sale. It cost me only twenty five cents. Finding that title completed by set. I also have all the new Doc titles and all six of the Golden Press hardback editions. |

| Comments: | Just a PulpCon postscript...I entered in search of the last 17 Docs I needed to complete my pulp collection and exited needing only 3, and not the first 3 either! It was a great gathering of avid collectors who descended like locusts on a marketplace chock full of exquisite examples of the genre. I whole-heartedly recommend you attend next year's event! Personally, I acquired 14 issues, including numbers 2 and 3 in pretty decent shape, a number 4 in fair condition, plus a Canadian number 1 in fine condition, all for an amount I was prepared to pay for just one early issue!!! Ebay is okay, but there's nothing like searching through hundreds of Doc pulps and finding that elusive issue in the flesh ( or pulp, to be exact )! So...Anyone out there have a spare example of 3/44, 5/44 or 12/46? See you at Pulpcon33 where I'll be searching for Avengers!!! |

| Comments: | Making plans to head to the Doc Savage convention I was two books short of a completed paperback set. Wednesday the day before leaving for the Con, doc double The Three Wild Men and The Fiery Menace arrives in the mail. Then Friday the 7th of November 2003, just mere hours before the official commencement of Doc Con VI, one of the brother's of bronze presented to me the doc double The Goblins and The Secret of the Su. I was thrilled at the completion of my paperback Doc Savage collection. With only 181 pulps left to go, how long could that take? |

| Comments: | I was introduced to Doc in 1966 in the 8th grade by a cousin who had started collecting. By that time at least a dozen of the Bantam reprint novels had come out so I had to scramble at different bookstores to find them all. Then I faithfully bought each paperback as it came out. I was determined to collect all 181 stories and did so. I still re-read some of the novels from time to time. Although dated Doc Savage still has the ability to thrill the imagination. Monk and Ham's antics still crack me up. Although I intend to pass my collection on to my 15 year old son, I am wondering if anyone has determined what a complete collection of the Bantam paperbacks in good condition would be worth today. |

| Comments: | What is there to say? Discovered Doc at the age of eight (in Marvel comic form) and the Bantams about a year later, and I was completely hooked! Took me twenty years, but I finally finished the PB collection, and I've managed to pick up somewhere around a quarter of the pulps. I've got the Bob Larkin cover to Shape of Terror, a dozen or so pages of original comic art from the seventies up, including a Kubert cover to one of the DC books. I've got the cold cast bust and the bronze snake statute. All the Grafitti prints. The t-shirts. Letters from Will Murray and Bantam in response to my anal retentive letters written in pencil on notebook paper at the age of 11. ("Dear Bantam editors - did you know that the original publication date you list in Jiu San/Black Black Witch is incorrect? The actual date is ____" "Dear Kid - um . . . thanks . . . we'll fix it next time" (I'm paraphrasing)). And out of all his great bronze treasure my favorite is, of course, the first Bantam I picked up, at 9 years old, from the floor of my cousin's closet. Lost Oasis. Vampire bats. White slavers. Diamonds as big as your fist. Killer carniverous plants. A ghost dirigible. A desert setting. MAN! I was all the way hooked. I still get excited thinking about it thirty years later. I later bought the Lost Oasis pulp, but to me, it's nowhere near as cool as my original copy of the Bantam (which I still have). |

| Comments: | Friday the 23rd April 2004: package arrives from the States. Yes, it's the DS Holy Grail and the final book needed to complete my set, "The Goblins/Secret of the Su", which appeared only a few days after I ordered it (double quick) as soon as it appeared on Amazon.Com. Which means that since February when I started using Amazon.Com and Abebooks to order from the US (based here in the UK it's not easy to collect Doc at all) I've gone from being 20 books short to having every Bantam single, double, omnibus, new adventure and biography (as well as being around £340 quid out of pocket for those last 20 books).
Most of my collection came from searching dusty second hand shops and the occasional book fair, which took the best part of 20 years, and now the magic of the internet completes the difficult last leg in three months! Great to have the set, but I'll miss the thrill of the chase. Still, I've only read about 60 stories so far, so at least I've got all that reading to look forward to! |

| Comments: | My first encounter with Doc and his Fabulous Five was in 1976; I was in the 8th grade and my school had a special showing of a new hero movie-DOC SAVAGE-THE MAN OF BRONZE!!
Well, that was it, brothers and sisters, I was hooked. The following Saturday, I begged my mother to take me to the Waldenbooks Store, where I proceeded to buy three new copies of the Bantam series reprints(#89,#90, and #91). After that, I bought every Bantam copy I could find; and finally, in 1999, I completed my Bantam reprint series collection. I also have a copy of the 1975 Warner movie that started it all. |

I am of African Caribbean origin and he English European. We spent most of our schooldays and teenage years exploring the world of sci-fi and Doc Savage. I introduced the good Doctor to many of my Afro-Caribbean friends. We wre totally hooked on the Bantam paperbacks by Kenneth Robeson and as huge comic fans also. We often wondered how they got away with calling Superman The Man of Steel(Bronze), Clark, givinghim a Fortress of Solitude etc. They just ripped off his character. |

| Comments: | Complete set of 1st editions of the paperbacks. Have about 1/3 of the pulps (from poor to mint shape). Began when I was in Jr. High when a geeky friend introduced me to him (was hooked from that day on)... it was the sargasso orge that reeled me in. I hated the Ron Ely movie, was very disappointed. Since I began collecting the pulps the movie started getting a little (mind you, a little) better. Heard through the grapevine about another movie inthe works with Arnold getting the nod (doen't like that idea - bad accent). Email me any collectors and maybe we can trade or just talk about the adventurs of our friend Mr. Clark Savage. Looking for the Sargasso Orge pulp, email me if any body has it or knows where I can buy it. Thanks, Mark |

| Comments: | I started collecting Docs in the mid-seventies, and completed my set of paperbacks 2 weeks before I was married, in fall of 1983 (Cold Death). Most of mine were from a used book store in Bowling Green, Ohio, called Pauper's Paperbacks. The name is appropriate: I bought half my collection of out-of-print books for 35 cents each. The rest came from other used book stores around Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I remember one golden day when my mom came home from a flea market with 30 or so Docs for $5.00.
The covers were my first inspiration in art instruction; I went on to attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and now make a living as a freelance cartoonist and caricaturist, and as a full-time high school commercial art teacher. I also have a complete Ballantine Adult Fantasy library, a few Pyramid Shadows, the first 24 (pulp-reprint) Avengers, and samples of a number of other 70s-era paperback series. . . as an artist and graphic designer I do in fact judge books by their covers! |

I have started reading the series in "submission order" which is the way to go! You get to follow Dent's development of Doc and his crew as well as Dent's own maturation as a pulp writer. Several of the first 10 novels are tied into each other (not quite sequels) which is something you don't pick up on reading the novels in "Bantam order". |

| Comments: | Introduced to Doc in 1964 with the first Bantam issue, I collected all the paperbacks, then latter day stories. After that, with the help of several reputable dealers, a trip to PulpCon, and, of course, ebay, I was able to compile the full pulp run in 99 days! Upon upgrading several tatty issues, I now have a VG or better set. Finally, I completed the full comics list with the last Street and Smith issue. Lessons learned: Condition is everything, patience is a virtue, and cash talks! A hearty hello and good luck to all my fellow collectors. Joanie |

I tried to collect an entire second set. I lost interest in Doc for few years and stopped collecting with only 25 to go for that second complete set. I also have 30 pulps, but gave up collecting those given the cost, and the thought that that pulp paper would begin to disintegrate to dust in another 20-30 years.
