Just to let you know, however, cats cannot digest/use Flax Seeds or Flax seed oil, which you recommend, because they do not have the metabolic process which will break them down. Othwerise your site is just a fabulous resource for raw feeding of cats and dogs. Thank you for providing this important information ! Best Regards: Susi Franco RN

What do you advise? In the spring and summer months I could feed him outside, but in the winter he just doesn't like to go outside for very long!

I did not find any link to email you directly so I will try to post my question here... When you use a juicer for the vegs, you don't mention that you recombine the pulp with the juice? It looks that way but have to ask. Any why do you juice instead of a blender or food processor? Thanks! Kim

Comments:Just as a side note: if you (anyone: meaning "you" in a general sense) go to the expense of buying organic, please don't ruin the food by nuking. Microwaves alter the molecular structure of foods/beverages and, from research I've done, should only be used as a last resort. When you alter the molecular structure of foods then you end up altering the molecular structure of the cells in your (or your critters)body. Just an FYI.

Comments: [Admin reply below this post.] >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I am astounded at your comment of "What do you think cats and dogs ate before table scraps?" This is just ridiculous!! 30 years ago, pregnant women drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes. That does not mean it is okay or healthy!! Research has shown the dangers of smoking/drinking during pregnancy, just as it has in that people food is extremely dangerous to dogs!! It causes obesity (often leading to heart disease), pancreatitis, and liver problems. You have a right to your beliefs, but do the research. And refrain from such ignorant statements as the one mentioned above. Just because so-and-so jumps off of a bridge, are you going to? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Admin reply: My animals don't get sick any more because of the raw diet I feed them. If you read the information correctly, you will have seen that the Raw diet that I and thousands more are advocating, is what dogs and cats ate in the wild. 10,000 years of domestication is not enough time to evolve and radically change biological dietary needs...... not to mention the advent of commercial "dead" and dangerous pet foods introduced just 60 years ago! An early pro-commercial pet food comment was: HOW GREAT IT IS TO BE ABLE TO RECYCLE GARBAGE INTO PET FOOD [instead of throwing it away]! I have no problem with you feeding your animals whatever you want. I do have a problem with your arrogant and insolent attitude. You may wish to pay close attention to the latest ploy in convincing people to bypass fresh vegetables and fruit in favor of pre-prepared packaged foods that are full of chemicals and non-digestible preservatives. The same brain washing applied to all of us at one time about so called "balanced" canned and bagged pet foods is now being applied to all too gullible people, as we all have been. We just have to learn how to think for ourselves by doing our own research and coming to well thought out conclusions. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Comments:Thought your webpage was great on the BARF diet! We now have our third Akita in 21 years and the first one on the BARF diet. He loves it! We introduce him to new foods gradually and we are amazed at how flexible he is in his tastes. He is 9 months old and approaching 100 pounds of powerful body mass and beautiful heavy bones. The diet is new on the East Coast, so we encountered a little resistance at first, not to speak of difficulty in locating sources of foods. But I think we've got it under control now. By the way, we now use two vets. One is the one we've always used because she has been so devoted to our Akitas, we can't leave her. But we also found a holistic vet; so we see her a couple of times a year for general advice. Love them both. By the way, do you know anything about laparoscopic, prophylactic stomach stapling for Akitas. I have heard that it is very good for avoiding bloat, but can't find anyone who does it. It is an issue in our house because both of my first two Akitas got it. The first one died of it, probably because we didn't recognize it soon enough. The second one almost died, but survived thanks to our devoted vet. We don't want to risk it a third time... By the way, we take all the precautions: raised food and water bowls; no strenuous exercise after eating; never board out of the house (use housesitters), etc. But we still believe Akitas are at risk. Any help?

Comments:Can't find a place to email you. Hopefully, I can get answers from this page I'm writing on. HUGE COMPLIMENTS on your web page. Found it strictly by accident in looking how to prepare raw fish for myself. I am trying to eat mostly raw, but I still want fish and am afraid. I and my dogs eat tons of raw veggies & fruits. Haven't found an easy way to start sprouting beans & nuts yet. I absolutehly LOVE your site on making pet food and I absolutely LOVE the pictures and detailed descriptions. You have given me so much to digest and start doing. I have questions. I have more questions but I'd better state these before I forget them. Freezing doesn't destroy any nutrients in the veggies? Why do you feel it's safe to put raw eggs in your dog's bowl? I've heard that wheat, corn & soy can give your dog stomach cancer - do you know if that is fact or fiction? HOW do you find chickens at $.38 per pound? How do you know those chickens were fed properly and with no hormones? I buy ONLY Foster Farms chickens (for pets & humans) because they are not fed hormones. I thought they were the only ones? I stock up at the farmers market every week. To preserve some of that, how do you feel about using the dehydrator? When you freeze those ground/juiced veggies, how do you prevent freezer burn and ice crystals forming? What kinds of dogs do best on raw foods? What kinds of dogs do you have/have you had? Any special recommendations for Great Danes. My research has been done, but they have very special requirements as far as food, time to feed, frequency of feeding, and what not to feed. Do you know great danes who have thrived on this type of diet for many years? I don't see any other way to email you. I DO HOPE you see this and that you will answer my questions. I don't know what the "private" box means under this box I'm typing in. Hopefully it means you will see it. However, no problem in sharing what I have said. Just keep my address private, please. Thanks again for your site. Carolyn

And how can I be sure my dog is getting a balanced diet? Alot of people compare barf to what dogs would eat in the wild. But I have heard that wolves and dogs in the wild are undernourished, have dental problems and frequently die from foul bones. What do you say to this?

Comments:Hi, This diet seems good but I am curious about something. Does anyone feeding a raw meat & bones diet to their dogs and cats also have livestock (especially poultry)? I was reading about my ducks and the recommendation is to never feed extra duck parts raw to your animals because they may get a taste for it and get ideas about catching their own. So I was wondering if that is actually a problem, also wondering if feeding them raw chicken would encourage them to think about my ducks. If anyone has any experience with keeping poultry and dogs or cats on a raw food diet, please send me an email and let me know your experiences :)

Comments:I have been doing some research on Dalmations and have found some very useful info on your site. Our 8 year old Dalmation, Reba, has been scratching and chewing herself to pieces over the last couple of years. Getting worse. She has lost a lot of hair and is always scratching. We have been treating her for flea allergies. The vet is determined that she has mange mites. Shots and dip every week are not doing much. I was very interested in the information that Dalmations are sometimes allergic to certain flours. We used to feed her only ALPO, a vet recommended this to us years ago. We got to thinking about it and we think her skin problems got much worse when we switched to other foods due to not being able to find the ALPO dry food any longer. I am wondering if it could be the flours that is causing all this trouble. My children have delayed food allergies and were tested by a blood test. I am sure they probably don't do this with dogs though. Any more info on the best way to gradually switch to a fresh, raw diet would be greatly appreciated. My husband said it was worth a try. She is so miserable and we are at a loss as to what to try next. Benadryl is about the only thing that seems to make any difference. Thanks!! Helen Miller

Comments:I have an 8 yr old American Bulldog. We found out that she had food allergies from 8 mos of age. Last October her health started failing. We went to 4 different vets. We had x-rays, blood work, stool and urine samples taken. We tried the most expensive non allergenic foods that we could buy. Nothing worked and our dogs health was failing fast. She was loosing weight and her bodily functions were not working well at all. We hired a carpet cleaner to clean our carpets and he suggested that we look up barf on the internet. We changed her diet immediately. What a difference it made. It saved her life. She has gained back some weight enough that I had to cut back some of her rations. She has control of her body functions again and it brings a tear to my eye when I see her with that bounce back into her step. Unbelievable that four different vets could not tell me what was wrong. I learned this only by the guy who cleaned my carpet. Crazy huh? Thank you for being on the internet. By the way you should see the horrified looks on peoples faces when I tell them what I feed Sam (Samantha) now.

Comments:Awesome - I began feeding my dogs like this after one began having allergies. The vet could not pinpoint the source (but wanted to prescribe meds) so through trial and error I finally figured out that it was his food. So I searched and searched for something that he liked and was not allergic to but found that if he liked it the other 2 did not or vice versa - so I decided to go the raw foods direction. This way of eating for all 3 has made a tremendous diffence in their health - and their blood profiles. Thanks so much for the help - this just reinforced my desire to be the best that I can for my pets.

We are planning on getting puppies very soon and will take all into consideration. Thank you.. #################################################################### ~~ ***ADMIN REPLY: Dogs and cats being cured of cancer on a genuinly raw diet, is NOT unusual! I recently (3 days ago) brought home and new pup, the breeder supplied me with a bag of kibble that it had been reared on but it's still in the car unopened. At 7 weeks this puppy has had no trouble at all changing straight over (her first meal with me was half a chicken carcase, I refered to you website to help me make the change. I recommend anybody who asks about this sort of feeding to your site as it has just so much information. Thanks Rose

They are entering their 'senior' years for a St. Bernard, 5 years old, and most people think they are only 2-3 years old! I too try and educate people about the BARF/Raw diet and how much better it is for our dogs, but many are still brainwashed by their vet and dog food companies! Keep up the good work!

I have already fed my three dogs raw chicken and a little raw beef liver and they really like it. I usualy feed them slightly cooked meat and cooked rice, but their teeth are getting bad. I brush their teeth with an enzymatic toothpaste every evening, but thought maybe feeding them the barf diet might be good. I am so glad I found you site now I can learn how to go about it. Thank you again REgina

Comments:Friend of mine was told by vet. that there have been found Ecoli and Salmonella bacteria in dogs feces and if your dog is on BARF diet you'll have to have his stool checked every few months , since if the bacteria is in the stool then it must be in their stomachs and that can be dengerous. Have anyone heard about something like that? I am very concerned. ############################ . REPLY: This is second or third hand information, but your doubts about the raw food diet are very common ones. . Dogs and cats have a very different digestive system than do humans. They are not affected by Salmonella as we are. Dogs have had to survive as scavengers and have adapted to digesting spoiled meats - Salmonella. As to EColi, it is in the meats we buy and on the hands of restaurant help, children and even adults, as a result of poor sanitation. So, maybe we should all provide stool samples to our vets??? I do hear from knowledgeable vets and MDs who happly feed their dogs and cats a natural raw diet. Unfortunatly, the PetFood industry has brainwashed vets and owners alike. Afterall, they have their entire businesses on the line!

Comments:I have two Bishons that have some allergies. Couple days ago I started them on the BARF diet. Before I gave them the chicken wings I had myself a stiff drink , I was so nervous as I was always told "don't give your dog any bones." This is the vet. scare and brain wash. My Bishons not only loved the wings they kept begging for more. Friend of mine came over and was horrified , she said .. your dog will get Salmonella poisoning or tricanosis etc. You're going to kill your dog.! This is typical Veterinarian brain wash. Just keep them coming with all the eilments, and then many times you'll not get any help. That's what happend to me. Sure... give them Benadryl... they have alleries... nevermind that it will make them groggy and miserable so I will have to come over again so they can try something else at my expense. We're having problems with the vegies thing. They used to like some of them when I was preapering for us , like string beans, red pepper, carrots but when is incorporated in the dish ... problem. They're both on the "strike" not eating. We feed them by hand sometimes and hope that they will get used to it. Any suggestions? how to make theis transition easy?. Thanks.

Comments:I am desperate to get information or opinion about my 15 year old Doxie-beagle mix. Her kidney funtion has been declining since June 04. She bagan vomiting 6 days ago. I took her to the vet. After running blood work and x-rays, they tell me she probably has pancreatitis and she has a mass most likely on her liver (it was hard to tell). They gave her sub Q fluids, alternagel and pepcid. I took her home and she did well. I began feeding her small amounts the next day and she did well. I looked into feeding her a raw diet and began that on day 2. She was doing so well, back to her old self but then she started vomiting again today. Back to the vet for more fluids and they sent me home with Hills I/D diet. I really want to feed her raw food, but what would be safe for her under these circumstances. I know she probably doesn't have long but I want the best for her until she no longer bouce back.

Comments:Hey there- nice to see someone who is as conscientious about feeding animals & people as I am! FYI- pls check out the Blood Type diet - Dr. Peter D'Adamo, barnes & noble, anywhere~$20 bucks- read it all yourself I am a chef & a diet coach who works with cancer patients & diabetes cases & folks who are overweight & have bad skin- all these things are related to Not eating right for your blood type. I am told that about 80% of all dogs & cats are blood type B, (the rest being type A's)- therefore, B's must only have Lamb or Turkey- ALL other meats are detrimental to their health. Foods are just chemicals- certain chemicals or glues- they build us up OR break us down... Chicken & corn & tomatoes will absolutely KILL a B (so will wheat, which is why most dog foods are so bad.) Fish is great, and I know humans can all eat rice, but I feel that it is not biologically correct for dogs & cats to eat grains, they never would have in the wild, it's true. So, I think I will be making up baked sweet pot's & gr lamb & turkey, with greens & carrots, beets & blueberries- that helps to keep their movements solid- it's used this way with babies. Anyways, so sorry to ramble on- but, just wanted to put that bee in your bonnet. Somewhere,somehow- we will use science to find the best way to keep them & ourselves as healthy for as long as possible! Much love to you & yours, miss chachi redondo albuquirky, NM Have a great day! happy holidays

This seminar will provide a focused, in-depth examination of the diet and nutrition of the wild wolf, from birth through death. While Dr. Mech will not discuss domestic canine diets *at all*, he will cover many topics which will be of interest to anyone feeding a natural diet to dogs. The facts and fictions about wild wolf dietary habits will be highlighted. Some (this is not an all-inclusive listing) of the areas he will cover through discussion, video presentation, and Q & A sessions, are: DIET OF THE AVERAGE ADULT WOLF: * Average kills per week * Average amount consumed per kill, per wolf * Pieces and parts consumed of a kill - and in what order, if any * Pieces and parts that are not consumed * Amount of bone consumed * Amount of "kill" (protein) variety in a typical wolf pack diet * Frequency of small animal kills vs. large animal kills * Nutrition derived from other sources then prey, if any * Typical feeding patterns in Spring and Summer vs. Fall and Winter * Scavenging as part of the diet - how much, how often, when, under what circumstances * The amount of fiber and the sources, if any, in a typical wild wolf diet DIET OF THE PREGNANT BITCH: * Changes in the amounts eaten during gestation * Changes in the kinds of food eaten during gestation * If advanced pregnancy prevents them from being efficient hunters in the last two weeks before whelping, does the pack feed them or are they left to fend as best they can DIET OF THE NURSING BITCH: * Changes in the amounts eaten in the first few weeks post-whelp * Changes in the kinds of food eaten in the first few weeks post-whelp * Hunting behavior in the first few weeks post-whelp DIET OF THE NEWBORN/YOUNG WOLF PUP: * Nursed for how long * Nursed how often * Introduced to regurgitated food at what age * Composition of regurgitated food (amount of meat, bone, other foodstuffs) * How often fed regurgitated food in a typical day * Fed regurgitated food until what age * Introduced to non-regurgitated food at what age * Initial "solid" food composition - amount of meat, bone, etc. * How much solid food do they begin eating, and how often * What age are wolf pups normally weaned * Begin to eat at the kill site at what age * Typical amounts eaten at the kill site by a pup * Typical parts/pieces eaten at the kill site by a pup * To what age does the pack insure that youngsters get adequate amounts of food * At what age to they become young adults * Are young adults immediately designated as "low ranking" by the pack * Do low ranking pack members only get kill "leftovers" and thus consume more bone DIET OF THE ELDERLY WOLF: * At what age is a wolf elderly * Does the pack provide for elderly members who may not be efficient hunters * Does the diet of the elderly wolf change in types of amounts or food eaten HEALTH AND OTHER DIET-RELATED ISSUES: * Discussion of dental health and evidence, if any, of dental disease, including tooth fractures, tooth wear, etc. * Observation, if any, of wolves suffering from endocrine diseases or non-parasite related skin disease * Frequency of both internal and external parasite-related heath issues * Based on physical observation and/or autopsies, evidence, if any, of death due to dental disease, cancer, organ failure, perforations, bloat, diabetes, IBD, bacterial poisoning, etc. * Stools - typical stool: changes in stool as related to specific food eaten; average size; average consistency; frequency of fecal elimination * If free from human-related injuries/disease, what is the typical lifespan of a wolf WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS SEMINAR: People feeding raw diets using some foundation of wild canid nutrition Veterinarians who want to learn more about the foundation of raw diets Veterinarians who provide care for captive wild canids Curators / animal care personnel who deal with captive wild canids Anyone making/selling raw diets in any form People interested in learning more about wolves ABOUT DR. Comments:All I can say is that the raw diet did wonders for my two dogs. Annie, an 8 yr-old Shepherd has had chronic skin problems. Special (commercial) diets, steroids and antibiotics showed little if no improvement. But within 60 days of eating raw 80% chicken/beef and 20% seasonal veggies, brown rice, oatmeal, her coat looks fantastic. I learned about BARF whilst trying frantically to find something my 15 year old Retriever would eat following a car accident. Left for dead, the dog would eat nothing put in front of her until I coaxed it with chicken breast. Within a few weeks, she was gobbling down raw chicken backs and necks along with my "glop." I am happy to report she is now doing fine.

Comments:I want to thank you for presenting such a clear, step-by-step series of instructions on preparing raw foods. I've been buying pre-packaged raw frozen food for my dog, Kudo, now 14-months old, for about the last six months. However, their menu is limited to chicken and buffalo only (together with the vegetables) and my dog is getting bored. Today, thanks to your website, I got the courage to get the ingredients to make her food myself. Your recommendation for packing the vegetable goop into ice cube trays is absolutely genius! I now have three ice cube trays full of the vegetable mixture, 4 ounces per cube, in my freezer. (I also have a kitchen that is a complete mess, but that can be cured.) For this, my first attempt, I've used organically grown carrots, squash, yams, celery, kale, and romaine lettuce. I've bought a pound each of pre-ground chicken, turkey, beef, and lamb. If she likes what I fix, I'll invest in a meat grinder. Keep your fingers crossed that Kudo likes my version of BARF. Thank you again for such a wonderful website!

Comments:I absolutely love your page. I've been feeding my lab a raw diet for about 2 months and have recently successfully convinced my greyhound to appreciate the beauty of raw, as well. Your pictorial is not only inspirational, it's poetic!

Comments:Hi, Great job on your website. Very informative. Thank you for all your hard work. I have two Afghans about a year old. I am about to begin the barf diet. I've purchased a meat grinder and I have one question. Do you grind any of the chicken bones. Or do you skin off all the bones before you grind the meat? Thanks for all your time, Kurt

Comments:thank you for your effort in the raw food info - however, you lost me first when you froze the food and then microwaived it - i thought the idea was to give our pets the freshest food possible---first of all, freezing is detrimental and secondly the microwave is sooooo awful for food and environment.....if i was you, i would rethink your way.....catherine

Comments:Just had to say thank you for this terrific website. It is a great help and introduction (to say the least) and I admire the work you have put in the making of it. I am seriously thinking about changing my German Shepherd´s diet to BARF. Thank you again, greetings from Iceland.

Comments:Hello, Denmark calling. We have a male Jack Russel terrier 5 months old. We have been feeding him BARF for about 2 months now. It is our first dog, so we can't really compare with previous experiences, but we can say that he is "using" the barf feeding much more efficiently than the normal dogfood he got previously. The vet compliments him on his fur, teeth and growth (excellent muscle build). He loves the food we prepare for him and gives us a lot of joy. So we are staying with the BARF, which is probably better than what we eat ourselves!

Comments:Dear raw foods promoter, Thank you for your pictures and infoo. My dog has been on the BARF diet for about 4 months. All of a sudden for the last 2 weeks she has refused her barf veggies which I process in the food processor as you suggested. In the past she at all her veggie Barf and now she won't touch it. I am worried. I am making it the same way, I even put some carrot juice and apple sauce to sweetn it up for her but she still won't touch it. Any suggestions? She eats her meat and bones but not the veggies. Thanks for your help. Priscilla
