Comments:I am looking for information about the "Wieburg" family name. I know that my great-grand father came to the USA in the mid 1800. Would like to learn more of his life prior to his leaving. I know that his father was named Edzard Wieburg and his mother was W. Maria Fremy. I have been able to track down more information on his mother's side, but little to nothing about his father's side.

Comments:Great little site. I'm helping my son put together a family history on the Heikens family from the same general area of Germany. Like your family my great great grandfather Julius Gossen Heikens came over to the US in 1860's. I grew up in Wellsburg, IA where low german was still spoken by my grandparents and to others of the same age. Thank you for the information on New Orleans as a possible point of entry and the surname requirement by Napolean. That was new information for me.

Comments:I am trying to find the correct spelling of the surname "Bronloewe" or "Bronlvewe" or possibly something similar. The given names are Thomas, Johanna, Martha, Catharine and Gerhardine. Catharine lived in Oregon and Kansas, as far as I know. They are on the 1865 manifest for a ship that sailed from Bremen. They gave their origin as Ostfriesland and were bound for Illinois. Any assistance with the name spelling would be appreciated.

Comments:Hello. My name is Sharon Herbert and my cousin, Daniel Hanson of Custer, South Dakota, have been searching for a great-grandfather named "Harm Lucas". He was supposedly from Schirum, Ostfriesland, but we have not been able to trace anything beyond his immigration/New York Passenger List entry which says that he departed from the Port of Hamburg on the ship Silesia. He was born in 1858 and apparently went first to Ackley, Iowa and then on to South Dakota. Any information about Harm Lucas in Ostfriesland would be much appreciated!
Thank you. Sharon Herbert

Comments:I am the great-granddaughter of Carl August Meyer born Sept. 17, 1844 in Ostfriesland and died July 8, 1927 in Merrill, Wi. USA. He married Hermine DeGroff on October 1874 at Horicon, Wi. she was born Feb. 23, 1854 in Saalfeld, Thuringer and died December 30, 1927 in Merrill, Wi.
He was the son of Fredrich Meyer and Eleanor Grabowski. She was the daughter of William DeCrof and gave her mother's name as Fredricka but no maiden name. Four of her known siblings gave their mother's name as Catherine Wegner.
She might have had a brother Leopold and Henry. I have some other DeCrof names, but don't know where they fit in.
Carl August usually went by the name of August and he had a brickyard. William DeCrof was a shoemaker.
I am hoping that I can find out more about them all.
Thank you for your time. Elaine nee Hoeft/Hackbarth Simon

Comments:Am starting to look for previous generations. My husband's family came from Ostfriesland. The names that I have are Herman Carl Schulz and Wilhelm Folkerts they settled in the northern part of Iowa. I have Herman Carl Schulz born 5 Dec 1859 in Petersdorf with his wife Folkelina Wilhelmina Folkerts born 18 Aug 1868 in Bracke, Oldenburg. Her father is Wilhelm Folkerts and her mother is Voelke Tamman born 19 April 1832 Fahne, Ostfriesland. Herman Carl Schulz's parents were Frederick Schulz nad Friederika Zarn. This information I was able to get from either the 1925 Iowa census or my mother in law. If anyone has anyone with these people on their family tree or would be able to point me in the right direction to further investigate, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Comments:My grandfather, Jon Goetz Remmers was born Sept.12, 1857. I believe he was from Bunde, Ostfriesland. His father's name was Hinderk and mother was Martha Grumwald, or possibly Greenwald, according to a marriage record found in Iowa. He was married to a Wendelena Christjans when he emmigrated,I believe in 1882. He was followed by a brother Henry who I think came in 1889. He married a Kate Boomgarten. On arriving in the US I believe they settled at Forreston Illinois. I have notes from a Graettinger Iowa paper that he purchased land in 1889, and a Fred Christjans rented land at that time. They came from Grundy County for this purchase. I also found that Wendelina died at Graettinger in Feb. 1901 and was buried there. Then in Oct. 1901, Mr. Remmers married a lady named Albertina Haskey Schultz who was a widow with 4 children, although three were adults by then. I believe Mr. Remmers and wife #1 also adopted two children in Iowa but I find no record of them after her death. I am still trying to put all the pieces together, from this family that ended up in Wisconsin and eventually settled in Tomahawk Wisconsin where I was born.

Comments:I just started doing some genealogy research so I'm a real "Newbie." My great-great grandparents are from Ostfriesland. My Great-great grandfather, Lehndert Gerbers, was born on April 12, 1842 his mother was Aqua Franzen. He married Gretie or Grete Boys or Bojs. I'm having difficulty making out the spelling of her name. She was born on March 1, 1849. They maried on March 1, 1870 in Peoria, Illinois. That's all I know about them other than their children.

Name: Patricia Weinthal
E-mail address: pweinthal@aol.com
Comments:Moins! My Weinthal family lineage can be traced back at least the 1750s in Emden. Successive generations settled in other East Friesland towns including Esens, Norden, Dornum, Warsingsfehn, and Jheringsfehn. Family members starting migrated to other countries in the late 1840s. Because of restrictions on the occupations allowed to Jews, they worked as butchers, animal brokers, peddlers, and eventually owned shops in villages. They served in the military alongside other East Frisia comrades in the Napoleonic years through World War 1. They were involved in civic affairs. One was elected to the Esens city council were he served until the Nazis came to power and passed laws making it illegal for Jews to hold office. East Friesland was not immune to the worst excesses of the National Socialism ideology. Many Weinthals were deported and died in the concentration camps. Others received permission to leave Germany after suffering great hardships. This is a history that provokes mixed emotion. One that should not be forgotten. Nevertheless, we are as proud of our East Friesland heritage as the next person. The Jews of the East Friesland countryside are part of that heritage. We celebrate our German ancestry, as do all Americans of German ancestry. I look forward to hearing from others with ancestors from this area! Researching WEINTHAL, WIJNTHAL, PELS, van CLEEF, van GELDERN, HESS, BENJAMIN, and de VRIES.

Name: Frank Oberle
E-mail address: foberle@rcn.com
Comments:I am looking for my great-grandmother Sarah Johanna Kiwiet, born supposedly in May of 1855 (I have no confirmation - this is from her funeral mass card in Baltimore) to Gerhard Kiwiet and Josephine Dirkson in Emden. She died in Baltimore in January 1937.

Sarah had a son Seraphin with Seraphin Oberle in June 1879 who was supposedly christened as Seraphin Kiwiet in St. Michael's Kirche in Emden, although I have been unable to verify that either.

Sarah traveled to Baltimore with Seraphin Oberle, where she converted to Catholicism, and then returned to Emden in 1882 to bring her son back to the states as well. She eventually had eleven more children in Baltimore, among whom is my grandfather.

Sarah had at least one sister, who traveled to New Orleans and married someone named Shaeffer (don't know about spelling).

I have had no luck whatever in locating any further information on Sarah, her parents, or any earlier ancestors, and any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much.

Frank
