Grandpa was born in Upleward and Grandma in Grosefein. My Grandpa Johann DeWall as came from there and after marriage lived by St James Mn. I still have relatives in Ostfriesland that I keep in contact with. We were also involved in the German Musical Follow the Sun to Iowa in 1996 when it was held in Buffalo Center Iowa and Grundy center Iowa. Was a very good Musical and was a complete sellout the 3 times it was held at each community. Was all in low German so many of us old Germans could understand it all.

Comments:My great-great-great grandfather came to America in 1859 from Poghausen, Ostriesland, and settled in Gillespie, Illinois, bringing young children, his second wife, and her mother. His name was Garrelt Schmidt. He had several children, two of them (Weye and Weert) who became my great-great grandfathers, for they had children who married. John and Etta Smith were my great grandparents. Around 1904 they moved to Nebraska for a short time before settling in Smith County, Kansas, where nearly all the family remained. Their children were William, Anna, Ed (my grandfather), Teena, Elmer, Bertha, and Viola. I would love to hear from anyone who knows the whereabouts of the family still in Illinois, as well as Germany. I had thought Schmidt would be an impossible name to research, but looking through the guestbook I don't even see that name mentioned so maybe I have a good chance of finding information!

E-mail address: pcohan@kc.rr.com
Comments:I am researching my grandfather George A. Coen. I have done Family Tree Y-DNA to match myself with the adult father that he lived with and listed as a family member in 1870 and 1880 USA Fed Census. I did not match so I know that George is not a biological son to the parents that raised him. Info: John Coen b: 13 Mar 1824, d: 14 Jul 1895. Sarah Rush b: 1831, d: 31 Oct 1893 M: 8 Dec 1849. Lived in rural Bowling Green, Plain Twsp, Wood Co. Ohio. George Adalbert Coen/Cohan (1867-1917) was a glassblower by trade; he died in Fredonia, Wilson, Kansas in 1917. Leaving his wife, Ruby and one son Donald A. Cohan. In my family, no one spoke of my father’s father, other than he was a glassblower. My father Donald Allen Cohan was born in 1911 so he did not know his father. Marriage name of Ruby and George is Coen, name change occurred after Donald was born, between 1912-1915. No official doc or probate records. My FTDNA origins were "Frisian" type. Many research resources of George are stated as Ireland for birth of parents. George has stated he does not know name of mother, John is name of father. Obituary states he has three sisters and one brother. His record of age is misrepresented several times in his search. I have him as b: Oct 1867, d: 7 Apr 1917.

Could George middle name Adalbert be his parent’s surname?
Is this a Ostfriesland family name?

Comments:I have been curious about my ancestors on my father's side that appear to have immigrated from Ostfriedland. Always I think about their circumstances, why and how they made the journey. One thing I find amusing was the name of children ... alternated from Jacob Lammert Redenius, the next generation was Lammert Jacob Redenius - a common thread from what I am finding. Thank you for your interesting information.
