On the subject of requiring male DNA for further research, you are I think, already aware of my place in the tree, and if you think mine would be suitable I would be prepared to make it available. As to the ultimate root of the family I rather disagree with the German theory as my own research into the Etymology of the name strongly supports the "Stone" link and suggests a root in the early post Romano Celtic period based closely around what is today Linconshire / South Yorkshire. Given the events of the late 9th and tenth centuries it would be reasonable to anticipate a fair measure of Viking blood in the line were this to be the case. Again, thanks for your excellent detective work and for the fascinating picture you have provided of the history of the line. |

| Comments: I too am descended from Daniel Dovaston who is my 8 times great grandfather! My Great Grandfather Samuel Dovaston, a blacksmith, came out to the goldrush at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia in 1863, with his wife Mary Ann Sheasby from Napton on the Hill, Warwickshire. They had 10 children. He lies buried in the Creswick Cemetery just outside Ballarat. He left 3 surviving sons and 2 surviving daughters, plus 34 grandchildren.
I will be visiting the villages and towns of my ancestors in May 2008 and I'm especially looking forward to visiting Shropshire! |
