Your website is fascinating and very educational. My grandfather, John A. Cairns came from Durham, England and as a young man emigrated to Canada and ultimately the USA. When he arrived in Michigan,(he claimed he was the only "Cairns" in the Detroit phonebook), it must have reminded him of a small England or Scotland surrounded by water! Now, there are numerous Cairns in this state, but some claim ancestry in Scotland, Ireland and Australia! |

I found it comforting since my Scots-Irish lineage has been overshadowed by my Volga-German lineage. I am curious to know more. I especially liked how you pointed out that I am not necessarily from Clan Grant as I was told by a business trying to sell me a tartan. Thank you. |

| Comments: | Great site! I have been interested in my family name for quite a while but not got too serious about researching it. Your site makes it clear that I need to do a fair bit more searching on my own before I can ask you for help or contribute to your information base.
All I have so far is: Myself: Anthony Brian Cairns, born May 21, 1944, Oxford, England (dad in RAF, mom evacuated from London) Father: Ernest Cairns, born Feb. 3, 1909, Salford, Lancashire, England; died Nov. 27, 1999, Victoria, BC, Canada Grandfather: William Cairns, born about 1880, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; died about 1958, Salford, Lancashire, England. There was a suggetion that sometime prior to William the family had come from Ireland. Thanks for the inspiration! |

My grandfather is alledged to have come from Scotland... my father was born in 1920, so I guess my grandfather, George Cairns, would have been born around 1900. They lived in southern California area. My grandmother was Juanita Gradias. Don't know if Granddad George had any siblings. Pretty slim in the info dept. eh? If anyone knew them... drop me a line! |

| Comments: | Just wandering around the internet+came across this site--looking for my half bros+sisters, John, Peter, Claudia+Liza, whom I have never met, but presume they were born some time in the 1950s in Michigan maybe. I was born in LA Calif in 1964 + grew up in Grosse Pointe/Detroit Michigan from 1966 to 1978, when I moved back to L.A. My father was John Anthony Cairns, born in St Paul Minn 1925, died in Los Angeles 1990. His father Was John Aloysius Cairns, born Durham England late 1800's, died Detroit Mich 1950s (married to Sarah O'Connor, born late 1800's, died 1978). My father had 4 other sibs...Frank, Tom, Patricia, and Joanne--all lived in Grosse Pointe Mich 1970s+1980s. He was the eldest child and somehow ended up growing up in Windsor, Ontario, Canada then settling in Detroit Mich as a young adult where he was married 3 times, my mother Audrey being his last wife (married her in 1959) and I his last child. I really know nothing else about the family history, as I never met my grandfather, and never asked many questions as a youngster. I know that I have many Cairns cousins prob still living in the Mich area. Fun to think about all the possibilities---cheers to all !!! |

When I was a child he spoke of Cairns Castle and our family ties to that area. His parents came to America at a young age and farmed in Richmond. I have little other information about his family. It was just an idea to go looking for something on the web and I am happy to know that there are others of our distant family out there. The name was not well known in the area I grew up. He always referred to our name as the Cairns Clan. Debra Ann Betts Bork |

I have to say that I can greatly appreciate your genealogical page on you family name study. My own family heritage is very diversified between Swiss, Finnish, Ukrainian, Belarussian, Irish, and yes Scots-Irish. On my paternal grandmother's side of my heritage, her grandmother was a woman by the name of Ann Cairns, born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire Scotland in 1850. She journeyed to America's City of New York with her parents and siblings in 1857. Here in New York, she came to marry an American born gentleman of Irish descent, George Washington Dimond. Ann's father, Joseph Cairns, was born in Glasgow as well, in 1824. He married to a young woman from Derry, Ireland, Martha Diamond. Joseph worked as a tailor on Saltmarket in Glasgow before coming to America. Joseph's parents were John Cairns, born in Magheragall, Co. Antrim Ireland, and Ann MacGuire of Aghalurcher, Co. Fermanagh Ireland. Their marriage however was in Glasgow's St. Andrew's Catholic Church in 1822. John too was a tailor. Whether this helps add to your family study, I do not know, but I am glad to share with you all that I have. Although I have learned not to wish too strong upon any star, perhaps you might find a common linkage out there somewhere which could bring my research further back in time. Wishing you the very best of success in your genealogical endeavors. Regards, Christopher |

| Comments: | I "dicovered" your website when I googled for "Cairns Family". Being in my fifties, I am becoming more interested in my roots. I live near Ottawa, Canada and through a historian aunt I learned that my roots begin in Scotland. I must admit that I was less than interested over the past many years, but for various reasons it is becoming more important. I was intrigued by reference to the disapearance of some Cairns family members in the 1800's. That seems to be about the time when my ancestors arrived in Canada. I doubt there is a link, but I am interested in tracking this down.
Very interesting reading. Keep up the good work. Best regards from the Cairns in Canada |

| Comments: | My great-great-great-grandmother was Mary Ann Cairns, born Jan 9, 1804 in Birse, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to John Cairns and Catherine McKondach (any possible variation of her first or last name that you can think of I've found!). One of her brothers was named Archibald, he was born May 10, 1811. Mary Ann married William Black of Edzell, Kincardinshire and the Black family later moved to Alliston, Ontario, Canada. I don't know if Archie immigrated to Canada too, but my great-grandmother Mary Ann Black had a photo of an Archie Cairns in her photo album -- he may have been her uncle, or a nephew named after her uncle.
I've only been researching my genealogy for a few months so I still have a lot to learn, but I thank Marvin Carnes for pointing me to your website! Thanks for publishing the research you have found. |

I wonder if you can help me. My grandfather Arthur (possibly also Edwin) Cairns died in 1910 in Calgary, Canada. He was a hospital porter there and friends have found his grave. A report was in a local paper saying that he had been visited in hospital by his mother Katherine who lived in Gleichen with at least one son. No mention was made of Katherine's husband John who had perhaps died by then. Did the Cairns from Gleichen originally emigrate from Ireland or Scotland? When Arthur's wife, Dorothea nee O'Neill, gave birth to their third daughter in Dublin in 1906. Arthur was already (back?)in Gleichen working as a poulterer. If you have any possible leads, I should be very grateful. Best wishes Mike Chew, son of Vera Cairns (born in Dublin on 18 November 1904) |

| Comments: | The discovery of this website has been an absolute joy to me. My greatgranduncle John Hutton is the single member of the Hutton family to grace its pages, but it provides me with a phenomenal amount ot linked brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles. The work put into this tree is worth a million dollars and more. John was born out of wedlock, and as such, he is probably impossible for the Cairns family to trace. His mother is Margaret McDowell and father is probably Robert Hutton, born 1844 in Kirkfieldbank. Robert's mfather, John Hutton is the first Hutton to live in Kirkfieldbank and he married Margaret Nivens in June 1841. The Huttons still live in Kirkfieldbank but like the Cairns family they have spead their wings and flown to all manner of locations.
Born in Bangour Hospital,Uphall, district of Broxburn, while the family lived in Kirkhill Cottages , Loganlea, Midlothian, this new member of the Cairns family tree, gtgtgdson of John and Margaret Hutton, now resides in New Haven, CT. USA and is committed, as are you all to making sure the family is kept in the memory. Though I do not have a homepage, I do have a daily developing, 2000 name tree at Genes Reunited and all friends and relatives are welcome to add to their tree, from my data, as I have been able to add to mine, through this astonishing piece of research. Hello cousins, may God bless you for your labours on behalf of our family. Regards, Robert Hutton. rvhuk@yahoo.com phone and fax: USA-203-787-2565 |

| Comments: | Hi Archie,
Thought you and your readers might like to know a little about Saskatoon, Canada and its Cairns connections. When driving into the city from the airport you pass the Sgt.Hugh Cairns V.C. armoury. At the entrance to the Kinsman Park downtown there is a statue of Hugh Cairns in soccer uniform carrying a ball. Please note Archie I cannot get your link to Sgt.Hugh Cairns to work but Google has a lot of other links listed which do work. In 1906 the largest department store in Saskatoon was owned by J.F.Cairns who came to Saskatoon from Ontario. J.F.Cairns lost his only son in 1915 when the teenager drowned in Pike Lake about twenty miles outside the city. There is a sports field known as "Cairns Field" used for fastball on the west side of town and it was probably named after J.F. Cairns. Saskatoon also had an Alderman John Cairns who was a lawyer back in the 1960s and there is a Cairns Avenue which I believe was named after him. I don't think any of the above people were closely related. John cairns. |

| Comments: | Hi Archie,
I found your website very interesting. For the past year or so I have been doing a family tree which covers all the families I am linked with. I have over six hundred names on my computer program now and some of the information has been very easy to come by (e.g.one family from Clackmannan in my wife's ancestry I traced back four hundred years in only one hour) and a lot has not been easy. It would appear that we share Alexander Cairns and Agnes Jack as ancestors and I believe David Cairns and the Cornal lady are also common ancestors. My Cairns ancestors were from East Lothian and got into coal mining in Ormiston in 1854. I am the last of my family's mining engineers as my sons have gone into movie making and television. I was born in South Africa, graduated from Heriot-Watt in Edinburgh and moved to Saskatoon,Canada in 1966. I am waiting for information from Australia about some family who went there in the nineteenth century. |

| Comments: | Hi Archie, your site was an interesting read for me. I have the history compliled from my mothers side, and tomorrow I will be finally getting my hands on all the research findings my aunt Deborah (Brisbane, Qld) made on her extensive travels in the UK that go back to the 16th century or perhaps further. I will email you anything that may be of interest to you. The irony is I am from Townsville, just south of Cairns in Nth Queesnland Australia. I gratefully knew all four of my great grandmothers, and Olive Cairns lived the longest (99) and right up to her passing away was telling us stories from when she was seven. Amaising. Its a shame she is no longer with us as she was full of information regarding her ancestors and once again may of been some help to you. Good luck with your research and your site! :) |

| Comments: | Hi
my husband found this web page, he is away from home at present so did not tell me how. John's family came from Kelso in Roxburghshire, the Eastern border region of Scotland. We believe that in the 1400's the Cairns'may also have been resident in the Mid Calder Area (West Lothian) which is just west of Edinburgh. John has a brother livings in Glenrothes, Fife. We will investigate further and see if we can contribute. After traveling extensively we have settled here in Goomburra, Queensland and have set us a self contained cottage B & B. |

| Comments: | Hi Archie My husband stumbled over your website as we are both starting off on the journey of discovery. He is doing really well with his enquires but I keep getting stuck and constantly get over excited to then realise I haven't found the right Cairns. Problem is the web pages we check census etc seem to have information missing or dead ends. I am from the Wirral and so I don't know if our Cairns is English, Scottish or Irish who knows. Thats the fun bit. My Dad (John)was one of sixteen children and so just immediate Cairns there are a lot. Well I'm off now to visit my grandads grave, who would of been 100 last christmas, I never met him and only know his name was Thomas so here we go on another adventure. Thanks for listening and bye for now. |

Fortunately I knew all my four great grandmothers who lived long interesting lives and who remembered so many details right to the age of seven or even less. All I can remember off hand is a little of the Hastings family who migrated to Australia from Scotland and married with the Cairns family.... |
