| Comments: | I have been researching my Robson family roots, and have gratefully received a cd set of the parish registers for Kirkby Moorside (ordered from Ryedale Family History Group). I've confirmed that my great, great, great grandfather is buried there along with his wife. They are Robert and Elizabeth Robson. Their son John came to America in 1817 and continued the family line here. John had 7 brothers and sisters and some are also buried at All Saints. I hope someday to make a visit to Kirkby Moorside and continue the search for my ancestral roots. |

| Comments: | Having visited the lovely farmshop in Fadmoor just outside kirkbymoorside I have been told that the WILSON name is very strong still in the village. My grandmother Marjorie WILLOUGHBY was born at Hope Farm, Fadmoor Rudland in 1919 and her mother was Hannah WILSON who I believe died at the age of 40 in 1924. She had married Harry Smith WILLOUGHBY in 1910. I am aware that Hannah's parents and family were all from Fadmoor in fact her mother was also called Hannah but I didn't find the address SLEIGHTS COMMON in Fadmoor. Also locally is Southfields not far from Welburn and my grandfather William Ward DALE lived there for a time I believe with his father Kit SHARP who was in forestry. If anyone has any information or infact may be a distant relative then please email me. |

(Cal.Pat. = Calendar Patent Roll or Letters Patent) I think the best place to ask for this reference is the York Reference Room of the main York Library (Museum Gardens). Good luck, Madge Allison |

| Comments: | Working on my family genealogy. I am related to the Sample family from Kirbymoorside, N. Yorkshire. They go back to William Sampill (Sample)and Mary Chester who were married in 1707. My Great Grandmother was Annie Elizabeth Sample, b. 1860 who married Frederick William Hill in 1882. I was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, and moved to Canada with my parents in 1952. I now live in British Columbia, Canada and wonder if there are still members of the Sample living in Kirbymoorside. |

| Comments: | I am very excited to find your website! I am tracing my Robson line and have come to an impass. In an old family bible is pasted an old picture of All Saints Church, Kirbymoorside, Eng. Above the picture in a blank space is written, in a small, beautiful penmanship: "Robert Robson and Elizabeth Robson, my father and mother, and six of my brothers and sisters are buried in the graveyard of this church which was built about the year 1600. My father lived 73 years - my mother 95. They were good people upon earth and I hope to meet them in Heaven." signed, JOHN ROBSON Underneath the picture in the same beautiful penmanship is written: "I was born in Kirby Moorside 13 Sept. 1797 was baptized in this church when an infant. I left England and imigrated to Canada landing at Quebec 15 July 1817, living in Montreal until Sept. 1818 when I came from New York to Augusta (Georgia) via Savannah, Georgia, thence to Greensboro, Madison, Atlanta, and now January 1869 reside in Culloden, Monroe County, Georgia". signed, JOHN ROBSON. John Robson died August 28, 1880 in Atlanta, Georgia. My husband and I live in Charleston, South Carolina, and will be coming to Windsor, England in August of this year. We want to come to Kirkbymoorside and see the graves of my great-great-great-grandfather and grandmother. If possible, I would like to see church records to see if I can get birth and death dates of these g-g-g-grandparents, as well as the names of their children. I think that a brother of John Robson immigrated with him to America and stayed in Canada. I would love to have his name and may be able to get it from baptismal records. I think John Robson left England by ship from Sunderland. Are your hours the same as listed on this website and will I be able to see any records? Is there a local geneologist who would be interested in helping me find Robert and Elizabeth Robson's ancestors? Sincerely, Norwood Robson Dennis Grinalds |

However, we were very saddened to see a couple with a horse and cart, towing their dog behind on the busy main road. Found this to be very cruel indeed. If you know them, please tell them to stop this. God only knows how the poor thing doesn't get wrapped around the cart wheels or run over by the traffic. Stupid and irresponsible people - they don't deserve to own animals or pets. |

Perhaps even remember my father who died around 1945/6 aged 38yrs, the brother of Minna. During and just after the Second World War, the Garner family owned either the Swan Inn, or Black Swan Inn. My Grandmother Betsy Garner passed away in the late 1940's but I have no date. How wonderful it would be to learn some Family History after all these years. Well, looking at your website, anything is possible. Keep up the marvellous work you do everybody and God Bless you all! |

| Comments: | I visited Kirkbymoorside in October 2000. I was looking for Judsons. I had evidence that indicated that a Judson had owned "The Manor". I knew nothing of Manors, but was directed to a road/street and found an old ruin.I cannot remember the location of that ruin. I have since found documentation that indicated that there had been " the vestiges of two baronial residences; one the remains of a Castle on a hill to the east of the town", "the other to the west end of it, at the north end of a street called Castlegate" The same document indicated that the mansion at Castle-gate had been at one time held by James Judson. I have also seen references to a document in the National Archives, that referenced a William Judson in connection to "The Manor at Kirkbymoorside in the year 1610. Do the remains of either of the two referenced residences still exist? |

I have a family tree with other branches going off from this. Her siblings were Elizabeth,Harry, Ernest and Walter (Twins), George, John, Mary, Eva and Ethel. Perhaps you may be a descendant relative. |

His name was Thomas Proud and there seemed to be a lot of Proud's around your area in the late 1800's. It would be interesting to know what life was like for people in those days. It's a lovely place as I remember on my visit with my grandmother in the 1970's. keep up the good work. Lynn |

| Comments: | With reference to Mik Kirkland's query below, the two spellings for Kirkbymoorside are typical of many places in the UK where the pronounced name is not the way of the correct spelling. Generally, people do not pronounce the second 'K' and so some spell it without it. For info, the 'by' in the name doesn't mean "by the Moors". It is the name for village/town in Scandinavian, e.g. Whitby, Grimsby, etc. Today in Norway the word for town is still 'By'. |

Only a year old, but our group already has about 80 members, worldwide! Some of our local members are actively collecting anything and everything related to the families and places in Ryedale's past. We have noticed that quite a few people have visited Kirkbymoorside.com seeking their ancestors, and we will try to email all those people personally. Our volunteers will be happy to try to help with any family history enquiries |

| Comments: | Excellent web site. I do so agree with 'Keeping the best, creating the rest'. That's how KMS seems to have worked beyond living memory and that is down to the people of the town. It was a great privilege to live in Kirby and I dream of it often - a kind of subconscious magnet. One friend described the way of life as 'circular Christianity'. You do something for someone - it is assumed you will and do - and, as in a family, someone else helps you. Kirby was a family - you don't get on with everybody, maybe, but you belong and there is a fierce and beautiful strength in that. Very best wishes to everyone, Neil McMillan |

I was of the Sonley family before I married and my mother was a Potter of Hagg Lane (now called Hagg Road). Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. My dad was a baker at the family bakehouse in West End and my mother worked at the laundry and for Coopers. We paid a nostalgic trip to KMS last year, 40 years after we left and enjoyed seeing all the old places again. I used to live up Swinnit Lane and we had a lovely walk up there to Yoadwath. Went to KMS County Primary when it was in Tinley Garth and Mr Brewster was headmaster. Hope to visit again one day. |

| Comments: | Hi! everyone. Greetings from North Oxfordshire where I now live. I remember Kirkbymoorside and the area very well, from my cycling days. Many of my ancestors lived in the area, Gillamoor, Fadmoor, and at Woolah House. Some are buried in Gillamoor and Kirkbymoor churchyards, After several visits, I have compiled a familyTree dating back to the 1700s If any one has any information about the Potter family, I would be pleased to hear from them. Some lived in the Malton area towards the 1900s |

| Comments: | It was a pleasure to find the Kirby Moorside site. I live in Canada now, but as a child during WW2 I was in Kirby Moorside Hospital for 4 years. I am writing my memoirs and would love a copy of a photo of the hospital, which I am told is no longer there. Can anyone help please? I remember it being on the moors, or I could see the moors from my hospital bed, I was between 4 & 8 years old and would love any pictures from that era. (1939-43). Thank you. |

| Comments: | I have lived in Kirkby for all of my life and have many good freinds here. Because of the reason that I have lived here all my life, I don't maybe appreciate Kirkby as much as I should do. However one day I took a good look at what Kirkby has to offer. Great community spirit, nice shops, and a GREAT garden centre. I feel that I have a spiritual connection with kirkby itself and all the people within kirkby aswell. I feel at one with the people and the whole of Kirkby perhaps I have become so relaxed and comfortable within Kirkby, and concentrating on the spirituoulness that I havn't always took notice of how truelly brilliant and inspiring kirkbymoorside is. In my opinion kirkby is one of the most genuine villages around the rydale area. |
