Miller worked at this factory in the 1920's and 30's there in Washington, Pa. Were they related to J. Ernest Miller and do you have record of William and George working there? Family story has it that they were Master Machinist and Machinist at the glass factory in the 1930 census and invented what was called the "Miller Machine", do you have any knowledge of this? Please respond. Thank you.

My understanding is that he rose from a non-skilled position (possibly at the Pittsburgh South Side plant) to one of some responsibility at the works, as he built a large home in Washington in 1898 (my grandfather recalled the construction of this house as a small boy). Is there any way that I could confirm Jacob's employment at Duncan & Miller? Thank you in advance.

Comments:I currently own two Duncan Miller button and panel punch sets, both have pedestals and one also has the platter and one has interesting flared rimmed cups and the other doesn't. One set has a flared bowl and the other is not. I found these sets in two different small town flea markets. Are these sets considered rare? I have seen 3 flared bowl sets offered on Ebay in 2 years, and have never seen a bowl without the flared rim. I have never seen a pedestal offered with the sets just the platters. Anyone have any idea on the value of these? I paid 60-75 dollars for each set including 26 cups. I really like this pattern and hope to locate more items in it.

Comments:As a follow up to my previous post this is what I have found so far concerning the Three Face pattern in the lamp format:
Catherine M. V. Thuro in her Oil Lamps – The Kerosene
Era in North America, better known and refered to by
lamp collectors as, Oil Lamps I, states:
page 300. “Three Face is a well known popular
pattern, and the lamp is quite spectacular. The design
was patented by John Ernest Miller in 1878, and it was
made by George Duncan & Sons of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Several glass books have descriptions of this pattern
and its manufacturer. Ruth Webb Lee notes (and I
checked this out in my copy of Lee’s book Early
American Pressed Glass, pg 299) the lamp was made with
the patterned font illustrated here (Thuro’s book) and
with a plain round font.
She mentions also that the lamp was made in Amethyst.
WOW!! I would love to have one of those.
Hope this helps anyone who may have an interest in this.
Further info appreciated.

Comments: Last year I was given several pieces of three faces: six toothpick holders, a cake pedestal, salt shaker and goblet from the estate of a relative. She was 94 when she passed away and had been given the glass when she was a child, so I'm pretty sure they aren't reproductions. I also got a covered compote with a kneeling frosted Indian on the cover/frosted diarama of log cabin, buffalo, and two deer on the sides of the footed pedestal compote. I wonder if the latter piece could be Duncan as well.

+++++++++++++++++++++++
First, the correct name for the pattern is THREE FACE. A person's age has nothing to do with verifying if glass is a reproduction, as some repro's are over 60 years old. I can unequivocally guarantee that all of your toothpicks are not from the original Duncan production beCause the toothpick holder was never made in the original pattern line. The earliest possible date for those is 1968. They were made by Kemple from new molds, and there are also imports from Japan. So she couldn't have been given all the pieces when she was a child--impossible. All of the pieces you mention have been reproduced. Your other piece is not Duncan and also has been reproduced.

Comments:Hi, I recently acquired two very old clear glass (maybe crystal??) book ends. They appear to be what would look like a ruffled grouse. Chest is puffed up and out, the tail feathers appear to be ruffled out, base on these are square and they are very heavy. The only mention I could find under glass animals for a ruffled grouse was Duncan and Miller listing as scarce and rare. Can anyone help me identify these as Duncan and Miller and do you have any information or picture that could help me. Would really appreciate any and all help. Thanks and God Bless.....

I have 16 plates, salad plates, butter dishes, small 3" plates, goblets, sheberts, wine glasses, punch cups, coffee cups and saucers, and 2 sugar/creamers w trays.

I would like to know the value of these and the market for this collection.

The only problem this collection is in Western Kansas, and I am in Pittsburgh, Pa. This is part of a large estate of my mother and fathers.

I would also like information on the Duncan Miller Museum, and I have heard there is a Convention sometime in July or so in Washington, Pa that I would like to attend.

Comments:Hi, Tomorrow I rise early, catch a plane & head North to
Wash., Pa., to the National Duncan & Miller Convention, for
the first time. Will attend the Convention, in part, the
dinner & guest speaker, return on Sunday for the Glass Show
& hope to have the time to visit your Museum & see more of
D&M fine, beautiful glass. Being from Florida, I will
greatly appreciate seeing for the very first time ever a
glass Museum such as yours. I love all fine glass from
USA, such as Fostoria, Cambridge, Heisey, Duncan & Miller &
also Pheonix & Consolidated, which Convention I & a friend
are also attending during this brief visit. My favorite
glass by D&M are the Pall Mall Crystal Swans, I have one in
Ruby & one in Amber, and also have 2 of the 3 sizes ? of
the Pall Mall crystal ash tray Ducks, one (the smaller one)
has a "strike-a-lite" lighter also in crystal that sits
inside the small duck ash tray. I also own the "Bay Ware"
catsup bottle in canary with the original crystal stopper
(has a chip off on the end of the stopper), but it is a
very fine piece, indeed! What great glass is Duncan &
Miller. Your Canterbury Line is wonderful, have lots of
crystal pieces, they are so fine and so elegant! Just
found in Haines City, Florida a beautiful covered stemmed
candy jar & lid, with a ribbed finial in the lovely shade
Greenbrier! The glass is so fine, isn't it! The color
glows! Another several pieces I covet are the Patio Line
pieces ? in Chartreuse with all the small candles & the big
one for the center. I had a chance to purchase it from a
gal pal in my Hollywood Antiques & Collectibel Club (FL),
buy didn't do it & now it is gone. I think there were 3
smaller candlesticks & the one big one. Oh, well, another
time, perhaps! Could talk on and on about D & M glass, it
is so incredible in its brillance & feel & over-all
quality; really fine art, I would say! Don't you agree?
Sure you do, 'cause you're the Museum, and I bet there is
some really fine glass there that I should see, soon!!!

Have a nice day, and a cold tomorrow night (55 degrees, we
hear!!) Doesn't Winter ever end up your way?? I'll be
packing my overcoat & scarf for sure!

Hope we can take in a visit this trip!

Happy Glassing to you 'all! Sunny Miami, FLA.

Comments:I have recently purchased, what I believe is the bottom
globe of a late 1800's oil lamp. It is a ruby red.It has
wonderful roccoco fillers around the top. The center has 2
plumes or maybe feathers in the shape of a heart with a
stylized flower coming thru the 2 feathers meet back to
back also jewels starting at the bottom of the flower w/
each jewel getting smaller as it goes downward. I have not
had any luck finding the pattern except with the
consideration of a European pattern called Graceful (not
the simple pattern of Northwood)The Graceful pattern
(Graceful Tumbler) that is named after Grace Rinehart in
the Carnival Glass 6th Ed. and also in the 5th Ed. Although
it's not the same pattern it is the only one I can find
that is close. Hoping to find the pattern on your site.
Wish me luck. Thank You.

Comments:I am originally from DuBois, Pennsylvania and was given an
oil and vinegar cruet set by my 90 year old grandmother.
The top of one of the stoppers was broken off
and in my pursuit to find a new stopper, I was informed that
they were Duncan Miller. I am still looking for a stopper
and was wondering if you could help me. The cruet set
(clear glass) consists of the 2 cruets which sit on a
divided tray. The tray is 8 inches from end to end and 3
inches at its widest part. It is 1 inch high. The handles
of the tray consist of what appears to be 2 teardrops coming
from each side, flowing into a bigger circle. Each cruet is
5-1/2 high from bottom to the top of the stopper. Without
the stopper the cruets are approx. 3-3/4 inches high at the
highest point which is the spout. The widest part of the
cruet is 2 inches. This portion of the cruet resembles
garlic with 6 cloves. The stopper is 2-13/16 in length and
13/16 at its widest part. The stopper resembles a cactus
with one tall point in the center with 2 identical points on
either side which are completely joined from top to bottom
to the center longer point. I hope this description
is helpful and maybe someone can help me find a stopper.
Thanks so much......

Comments: I am interested in finding information on a green
glass compote/cakeplate with a dolphin stem. The piece is
8" tall and 11" inches in diameter w/ bowled diameter of 9"
inches. The dolphin base seems to be pressed , but the bowl
itself has no seam and is perfectly clear with one tiny
bubble in the "lip" of the bowl edge. The base is octagon.
I was given this piece about 9-10 years ago by a 75
year old friend who told me it belonged to her mother. She
also showed me a Post Dispatch "Everyday Section" newspaper
article on the piece which unfortunately was not given to
me and later was lost.
If you have a reasearch department that has any
information as to the maker, or picture or knowledge of the
article of this piece, please notify me by E-mail.
This means a lot to as my dear friend has since passed
and I would like to relate the history of the plate to my

Comments:My mother's mother was Lucille Miller. Her grandfather
designed the threeface ware as a portrait of his wife for
the exhibition (1870?). I have a few threeface pieces, and
a fairly good set of "first love" which was my mother's
wedding pattern(ca 1946). Also some swans, sandwich glass
and a few other pieces.
I am single, a poet, an artist, and an only child. I love
and use my glass, but in another half-century what survives
(and glass, of course is by nature ephemeral) should go to
someone who loves this art. Please contact me if you are
interested in this history.

Comments:A superbly well laid out site. I had no trouble in finding
my way around, which for somebody as new to pc's as me was
a real relief! I had to get a pc in order to keep records
on all my recent cases. I'm a private eye you see. (Well
thats what I tell people anyway) Man, you should have seen
this one girl I pulled. Sucked her right in I did. She
didnt have a clue! I was like "yeah Heather (think that was
her name) I'm the king dick round these parts..." She loved
it! Oh well, shell never know! Anyway, a great site, I
hope to purchase my first DM bog roll holder real soon.
Must dash, I've a paper round to do. Bye x
