| Comments: | I was raised in the Dutton District of Springfield, Vermont. My mom was born a Dutton. We are descended (in two different lines) from Thomas D. (b. ca. 1619) who emigrated from somewhere unknown to Massachusetts. The mantle of family historian for the descendants of Stephen Hartwell Dutton has fallen to me; and now I look, with so many others, for something other than pure fancy tying us back to the Old World. So far the search has been in vain.
Over the years the family has lost its more adventurous members to the call of the American West while "our branch" stayed at home in the Green Mountains. Now even my own first cousins are almost all scattered, from Belgium to Maine to Florida to Texas to Utah "and beyond". I am currently in exile in Illinois. My great-great-great-grandfather was William Henry Dutton. Born around 1785 and married a French Catholic "de Polinac". He was paymaster-in-cheif in the British Navy. One of his sons was Charles Orlando Dutton. Charles Orlando's son Arthur was an Anglican minister who lived in Canada. His descendents moved to New Hampshire. I am the granddaughter of Clifford Anderson Dutton, whose grandfather migrated to Florida, USA, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1838 with his young family, setteling in Jacksonville, FL. and moving further west in Fl. to the Jefferson and Madison Co. FL. area when FL. was still a Territory. This grandfather Joseph Lamphlier Dutton of Philadelphia, PA. was listed on the first voting roster for Fl. in 1845 when Fl. became a state. This makes me a fourth generation Floridian and have seen Fl. change from a wild, sleepy, serene place to a place where all of the cities run together. Thanks to all for a great website and very interesting read in the guestbook too. Seems to be a lot of us around! I live in Glastonbury, Somerset, England, and have many members of the Dutton family around (Nan Dutton, who married my Granddad Jack/ John Dutton, is the proud owner of children (8, one of which is my Dad), Grandchildren (I am one!) Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren. Last count of the grandchildren and greats was 112 so far, at least one new every two months now! I'm not a Dutton, but love doing my own family research. I live in Dutton, Cheshire and thought that you may like to know a little about our village. Dutton today contains a petrol station and a pub (The Tunnel Top. 90% of the houses are less than 20 years old and there are approx. 250 inhabitants. Dutton lies on the west side of Cheshire, England within easy reach of the M56 motorway which runs from Manchester to Chester. The surname Dutton is well known in this part of Cheshire. Dutton could only be classed as a village and runs along the A533 for some miles, being a long thin narrow rural area. We even have a few ghosts too! But that's another story! The "centre" of Dutton lies over a very long canal tunnel (the Trent & Mersey Canal) which I believe is one of the longest canal tunnels in the UK and one of the oldest too. it was an extremely important trade route when freight was moved by water. Connecting the port of Liverpool and the Staffordshire Pottery Towns (e.g. Stoke on Trent) From my 1901 census, I find that there was a major workhouse at Dutton still in operation. This site has now been redeveloped and used for low density housing. There used to be a small hospital here until just a few years ago (It was laterly used as a rest home) the hospital has now been demolished and also used for housing. The deeds of my house (dating back to the late 1800s state that there was a post office on my land at the time). Locals also remember a post office being built over the canal tunnel and how it collapsed into the tunnel some years ago causing major damage. Farming has been the traditional source of employment in this area. The land is of good arable quality and dairy farming is common. I have been doling some research on my nephew's name - Janion - an old Shropshire family from Frodsham - he can trace his line back with full details to 1622. My particular interest is the Dutton link. One of the Janions in his direct line (Richard Janion born 2.9.1771 died 27.2.69) married Elizabeth Dutton (born 22.11.1779 married 17.2.1803) and at some time they lived in the Savage mansion at Rocksavage,Clifton, which they may have rented. Elizabeth died at Rocksavage on 13.10.1851 and they were both buried in St Lawrence, Frodsham. There is an oil painting of Richard Janion as a youngish man with Rocksavage in the background. That is all the information I have about Elizabeth. Anything more would be most welcome - particularly whether or how she relates to the Dutton Hall Duttons. |

George was a Pharmacist. He worked at the Mesa Drug in Grand Junction, Colorado. He later died in Colorado Springs in 1963. He had a heart attack while mowing his lawn. His wife's name was Alma. Their sons names were: Charles, Darrel, and Kurt. They lived on Azalea Street at the time of George's death at age 53. Anyone who can put me in contact with this family please contact me. To just even see a photo my Grandfather George Dutton would be a dream come true! My mother Lila died at age 36 in 1986. She died in her sleep due to a blood clot entering her heart. |
