Comments:Reading the comments of Hoover Grads..It's a real time rewinder to read some of those notes... Not a lot of us around anymore from February '42....I try to make the Homecoming Day at what is left of a beautiful school building..I guess the kids now think their school is also beautiful but the can't know how proud we were of Hoover in the years of '39 to '42. I hope that all the Hoover Grads have found their dreams have come true...Best of luck to all of them.

Us older ones would like to hear from 1946-47 - and if anyone has a copy of yearbook for 1946, I d be thrilled to borrow it! I was far from being one of the movers and shakers back then, but if anyone remembers me, please let me hear from you, will you? Does anyone remember Frances Archibald who taught English and Spanish? My fav. teacher. And does anyone know what happened to Alfred Medina? I had the most intense crush on him in 1945 or so. He was gorgeous!

I was the shortest member of the Silver Blades Drill Team and represented Hoover in the Christmas North Park Parade. I loved Spanish class with senora Miller, world history with Mr. Zdankowski.

Went on to Army in Vietnam (B Co., 1st Bn, 7th US Cavalry, 1st Air Cav Div-65/66). Some may not know that we lost Jeff Kazakowski in Nam. He's on "The Wall." I have '61 and "63 annuals if anyone needs anything. Two Ph.Ds and a Law Degree later (I failed my way through Hoover!) and I'm living in beautiful Guadalajara, Mexico. Just love it! And, NO, I'm NOT afraid! My CIB means something!! How many remember when President Kennedy came by? Or Kathy Wagstaff on a tabletop in Carnations doing "Right Here In River City?" We DID have a cool Auto Shop teacher, didn't we!!

She was just 3 months shy of graduating when my grandfather had to move to Los Angeles due to the service (Navy). So of course she wanted to move with him :) She ended up being a a stay at home mom raising their 4 girls and were married for 60 years! My grandfather ended up passing 5 years ago, just one week away from their 60th year anniversary. Her name is Dorothy Lorenzen, if anyone knows her or has a yearbook with her in it, I would love to hear from you! Thank you :)

Comments:Fantastic! 'Just discovered this Hoover link and it's terrific....but, as a graduate in 1945, I don't see many folks from that age..I was in the ROTC, carried the State Flag in our parades and then became the Major in my senior year...the highest rank of any San Diego High School ROTC unit at that time...and led the Pledge of Allegiance at our graduation out back on the football field...also played French Horn in the orchestra. Living in Normal Heights, it was a long ride on 2 streetcars and a bus to school each day :(

Comments:Nice to find a place of memories for Hoover grads; enjoyed all the input. Seems like yesterday: 'toolin' down by Mission Beach in my '56 Chevy Bel Air, the $1 a car Ace Drive-in in Spring Valley with it's 3 B-flicks on Friday or Saturday night, getting out of class to see President Kennedy's motorcade passing in front of the school, graduation ceremony at San Diego State because we were the largest graduating class in San Diego that year, and so much more! As for me now, my cousin called me the 'travelin queen' and I'm still living up to that name. I did manage to return for my 20 year reunion in 1984. It was fun to drive to all the locations of the past and to see the wonderful improvements to downtown. My mother had worked at the B & L across from the square, now there is the Gas Lamp District. Looking forward to another reunion, perhaps in 2014.

After having a horrid senior year (1/2 in San Diego, 1/2 in Galion, OH) I moved to Ohio right after graduation, lived there for several months and have been in the Detroit, MI area ever since. Will be retiring after nearly 44 years of employment at Wayne State University the end of September, 2010 and can't wait. I will move to Florida to be near my two sister soon. My fondest high school memories are from Herbert Hoover HS and I hold many of you in my heart. It has been nice reconnecting with some of you over the years. Sincerely, June

Comments:Class of 1965. I can't express how many times I have wished I could step into a time machine and go back, if only for a day. Thinking of my high school years at Woodrow Wilson, and Hoover, are my "Happy Place." Everyone always says the growing up years are the best, high school included, and how true that is. I fully realized it at the time. Our class was so large, I think over 1500 kids, there was no way to be personal friends with everyone. But - what a beautiful class we were. How I would love to walk those halls again, and walk the beautiful school grounds, surrounded by friends, and feel the safety and security of those happy days. I miss them very much. My brother and I, and our friends, surfed the beaches of San Diego and Southern California. My brother, Donel Herbert, class of 1968, still gets his "salt water therapy," doing the dawn patrol every weekend at our favorite beaches. It's difficult to comprehend that 45 years have past. I'm sure many people feel as I do - so much has happened to all of us since then....but it only seems like yesterday since those happy carefree days of our youth. I hope everyone is happy, and doing well. My love and best to my classmates of 1965. "Hail Herbert Hoover High, this is our song to thee." Dias Cardinales forever. :)))

I would have graduated with the class of '68, but not in the cards. I am so interested in getting together with people I used to know and see if there is still the memory of me floating around in that great group of people I'd known through John Adams Elementary, Woodrow Wilson J.H.S. and Hoover. I would have been proud to wear the ring and graduate, but now can only hope to 'crash' one of your parties. Please let me know if anything is going on in the near future as I would love to see some familiar faces.

I have been in southern Indiana for the past 23 years, but I haven't forgotton my school years at Adams, Wilson and Hoover. I still have my 3 high school annuals and pull them out from time to time to travel back to the 60's when things weren't so complicated. So much has changed, who would have guessed. Comments:The 1948 class celebrated their 60th Reunion on Sunday, Oct. 5th 2008 with a 3 hour luncheon cruise aboard the Hornblower cruise boat High Spirits". This vessel is a sister ship to the yacht that President Franklin Roosevelt cruised on during his presidency. 95 classmates, spouses,SO's and a few sisters were aboard and everyone had a great time. One of our classmates, Yvonne Wickstrom Larsen, had been chosen by the Downtown Rotary Club as Mrs.San Diego, 2008, and we celebrated that choice and presented her with a corsage as a small token of our approval of the Rotary Clubs excellent choice. Four classmates were given bottles of Sparkling wine as prizes for long distance travel to the reunion. Gale and Mary Ruffin came from Oregon, Jack Alford and Deniese Anderson came from Tendoy, Idaho; Dolores Berger Milam came in from Cleburne, Texas and Norman Finan and Beverly Rogers got here from Carencro Louisana. It was Dolores Berger's birthday, so we had a little cake and sang Happy Birthday. The weather was great we had a great time and it was really super to see so many classmates. We are in the early planning stages for our annual reunion luncheon for 2009, so keep checking this website for updates. BBest wishes to all. Jim Ward.

We have a group on Facebook right now called Hoover High School Class of 1968. This is in lieu of a webpage. You join Facebook.com and go to groups and type in the above name. Comments:It is always a pleasant time when I think back about Hoover High. I/we were fortunate to have experienced high school during the fifties and sixties. I am fortunate to be in possession of my father in law's Dias Cardinales year book from 1945. It belonged to Prime Guerin. Prime met and later married Clara Angus (Hoover class of 43). Prime left Hoover early to join the Navy. He served in the submarine service aboard the USS Chivo, among others. Prime passed away two years ago. I am proud to have known Prime. He was a stand-up guy. The class of 45 had two graduations that year to accomodate armed forces enlistments. Many, many of those guys and gals never came back. I am eternally grateful to all those that served and those that stayed at home to advance our cause. Clara now lives in Boise, Idaho. My Brother, George Helms, Graduated from Hoover, class of 57. George married Beverly Belifelt. I, Dave Helms, Graduated from Hoover, class of 60. I was on Mr. Wooley's stage crew and Mr. Hershey's print shop. I joined the USAF and served in Morocco and Spain as a Scope Dope (Radar Operator). I have remained in San Diego all these years. I just retired from Sharp Hospital (Administration). Thanks for the memories, Dave

Cheerleading for the soccer team, because I remember the scent of the grass on the soccer fields and the scent of the cologne my ex-boyfriend sergio wore back in the days. I remember the place I ate the delicious burritos my husband Felipe brought from home. I started by eating half of one, than one, soon his mom was packing two for each. He didn't realize I had a big appetite for such a small girl. Needless to say, he won me over with food and we are now starting our 31st year of marriage. I hope that some of the couples I remember that started as sweethearts at Hoover High are still going strong. Take care....

The surf club was something new and we really had a blast hitting the waves together. Lifetime friendships were formed and there are many of us who still enjoy one another's company and calls. My memories of Hoover are what keep me grounded and "in touch" with my San Diego. Benjamin Franklin elementary school and Woodrow Wilson Jr. High is where it all began. High school was fun, my fondest memory is climbing the "Tower" and signing the 1963 yearbook--and looking back to 1945 and seeing my Mom's signature too. 1945 Graduates - My Mom - Gloria Malmin (Hurst) is turning 80 next week and we're having a big family party at the house in North Park. I know she enjoys seeing all of you at the luncheons she attends. Join the Alumni Association, its a great organization!

Even tho they demolished our great old building, I still call that which is left, my "Alma Mater!" I was in that class that moved into the armed forces so soon after graduation. Hey, Join the Alumni Association and try to make yourselves known at the homecoming sessions each year.

I went to La Jolla High for my junior year because I was a surfer then and went to live with my dad that year. So I don't appear in the 67 or 68 yearbooks. I remember Hoover as an overwhelmingly big school compared to Lewis Jr. High and didn't make many friends there except for the few from Lewis. I would like to purchase the Hoover yearbooks from the years 66 - 70.

The big arch, tower, courtyard, wide hallways, and friday night football games...I think the old school was the most beautiful of its time. It had a very long and distinguished history in San Diego. They just don't make them like that anymore. I miss the school and my classmates. If any of you see this and are inclined to drop me a line, I'd be very interested in hearing from you. Laura contacted the right person and I am in receipt of my mom's highschool transcript. It's simply wonderful. Thank you Laura from the bottom of my heart. Mom lived at 4406 48th Street in 1931. Wonder what's there now. Mom went onto Ft Wayne IN in 1932 and came back to San Diego and attended Syder Continuation School. She married in 1935 my father, a Marine. We left CA for NYS in 1941; have been back once. My mom visited however and Gramps visited us in the 50s. So long ago and yet yesterday. The Highschool transcript even shows those Otis and other test results! Just terrific. Now, I know where Mom learned her Spanish. She used to sing "Oh Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone" to me in Spanish and also said her grama Margaret Current Black taught her how to dance the Charleston. Mom taught me this too. Anyone out there who remembers a Nana Lois Black? All best regards and thanks again. Laurie Lou Dunham

My wife (Nora) and I bicycle a lot, and we are both into singing and music. I have a small singing group of "senior" men and we sing old-time-hymns and gospel to a variety of audiences. I sing in 3 different choirs and also play the guitar and sing. Nora is in several singing groups, and sings in senior group homes. She has done a number of productions in the Denver area with her group, Nora Fox and friends. I lead bicycle rides for "seniors," and I am also into weight lifting, and am active on the internet in bicycling forums, having established a web page "Rogue's Gallery" for bicyclers 50+. http://members.aol.com/bfn50gallery. Son Tim was totally and permanently paralyzed from the shoulders down in 1986. He has since graduated from Stanford Law School, and he and his attorney wife were the attorneys who recently settled the KMart class action disability access case - the largest case of its type ever, at $16.25 million. They are interntaionally known, and their web site is http://www.foxrob.com. Son Andy lives in a "Host Home" nearby. We are so proud of both of them. We do a modest amount of traveling, but mostly we are into church and community activities. So many of my close high school friends are no longer with us. My goal is to make it just a few more years. My mom is 93 and is still going strong! Please contact me at: DnvrFox@aol.com

Mom has passed on but she left her western heritage intact. Have found actual streets where she lived. Mom was b 1917 and died in 2004. Would love to know what the boundaries are in finding her in the 1930 census as a wee lass. Per her writings, she mentions also having attended Woodrow Wilson Jr High 7-9th grades. I was involved in: Band-marching and concert(drummer)/ROTC-BUONO's BANDITS the Drum & Bugle Corp (drum instructor then comander in my senior year)/Math-up to calculas/Electronics-my major in college. I moved away to Vancouver, Wa. in 1991 and still live here. Married 35yrs, now getting a divorce. I found myself last year (2005). I'm a transsexual, a male to female and in transition. It is a hard but rewarding journey. I will never go back to being a male. I was mean, cruel, and not loved. Now, I have friends from school and my support group here that are understanding and LOVE ME. I call myself Cheryl Lynne Smith and will legally change it to this soon. I live 97% female now. The other 3% is in front of my parents who live in a nursing home here. Hugs Cheryl (Terry) Smith Aug. 28, 2006

I guess it's a family tradition now with THREE generations of Hoover grads! Even MORE than coicidence, we didn't even live in San Diego all those years... but all managed to gravitate back in time to spend time there and graduate. I DO miss the old school, though. The new one is okay, but can't begin to compare to the original. I remember the classic architecture, the gorgeous senior lunch court right at the heart of the school, the TOWER, and ALL those stairs in between classes! Does anyone know if the original organ is still in the auditorium? Mike Torres (also class of '75) used to sit in there and play the music from the original "Phantom of the Opera" while we were waiting for play rehearsals to begin. He was SO GOOD and convincing that I still get chils! Whew! Memories!

Comments:Wow, these sure renew old memories of my days at Hockerville (1939-42). Being in the February class of '42, I didn't have to look for a job, as I was in boot camp two weeks after graduation. I actually signed up on Dec. 8th, but the recruiter told me to go to the prom, grad ceremonies and parties and they'd keep the war going for me. When I retired from the Navy 27 years later, that was the only promise they ever kept. I remember Leo Tuck, with the curly hair. Good to hear from him. Laura Lou...I had a huge crush on her, but she was dating a jock, so I kept quiet. I enjoyed ROTC and cheerleading and often wonder what ever happened to Sgt. Spellmeyer, our ROTC instructor. He was called to active duty and was replaced by Sgt. Sypolt. Several years ago, I ran across Sgt. Sypolt's address and wrote to him, but his son wrote back to tell me his father had just passed away. Sorry I missed him. We had the Rowdy Dowdy Club and I often recall the good times we had. I got our first reunion up and going with Betty Lee (Anderson) Netting, but it was the 30th! I chaired it until we moved to Reno in 1992 and had to miss the 50th. My wife of 48 years passed away 18 months after we moved here and I'm still on the available list. Found a new career in law enforcement and for 25 years, have been a forensic hypnotist, helping agencies all over the country and Mexico to solve coldcases. Unfortunately, you can't use it in California. When I got to Reno, I got legislation passed to permit it here and have solved some major crimes in which three guys are sitting in Death Row and one is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole. I'm a reserve detective with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, having been with them since 1992. Today, our days at Hoover seem so far away and yet I find myself often thinking of old friends, some of whom we lost in WWII. But, I guess Thoreau was right...you can't go back. Go Cardinals!

Playing basketball for Ricky Wilson, belonging to a secret [not so secret] club called the Sapphires. We thought we were something special in our bright blue jackets parading around school. These were the war years and many of our frends preceded us going into the military. One unfortuninate thing occurred when an extremely fine American Japanese classmate, Willie Yamata, was removed from school and sent to an interment camp. A'Capella choir under Myron Green was also a highlight for me. The building is entirely different, but I hope the spirit is still the same.
