Comments:Douglas, Thank you so much for your inspirational talk at our recent Children With Diabetes conference in Orlando. You are an incredible role model for these kids as well as the adults. I suppose it takes both "do" ers and "view" ers to make the world work, but you certainly are a "do" er!!!! You are going to do wonders for fundraising, awareness, and helping to ensure positive change for people with diabetes. Thanks for providing so much positive energy and your terrific smile! All my best, Sonia

Comments:Congratulations Doug!! That must have been a spectacular trip. I am a Comm/CFI and own a Mooney 201. I'm based in Lawrence, MA (LWM). My grandson Ryan is 18 months old and was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes when he was 10 months old. Until I saw the article in AOPA magazine I never knew a Type I Diabetic had any chance of being approved for an FAA medical. Thanx to you this certainly raises my hopes of Ryan becoming a pilot if he so chooses. I know a cure for diabetes within the next 10 years is a very good possibility and we pray it will happen soon. Thanx again for raising our hopes and goodluck in your future aviation adventures!! sal

Comments:Douglas: Just saw your article in AOPA Pilot magazine. Terrific job and Congratulations. Think of the sights you have seen and all of your experiences. I am from Omaha so the article caught my eye. This just shows what people with chronic illness like diabetes and asthma can do. Not everyone can fly around the world, but we all have the capacity to do something special in our life. This feeling of achievement also has a tremendous impact on living with diabetes, leaving you in control of your disease.

Comments:Great to read about your fantastic flight around the globe. It illustrates to anyone with or without type 1 diabetes how un-restricted you can be with your goals as long as you have planned well and are knowledgable about your own condition and how to control at all times . Being same age as you Douglas ,yet a Type 1 since age 7 and recently having cycled across Ecuador and the Andes (up to 12k feet)I hope that in achieving these goals we give a clear message that there are few barriers to leading a perfectly normal life. I am sure that this first flight by a type 1 will not be the last. Congratulations

Comments:Doug, as a former ATP with a B-737 type I am begging you, please DO NOT give your hard earned dollars to the ADA. Yes the ADA is great at social advocacy, but they give less than 4.8% of all their donations to cure research!! I will repeat that LESS THAN 4.8%!!! I would rather see you give those dollars to the JDRF or to the wonderful work that Dr. Faustman is doing at the Massachusetts General Hospital. I am including the links to her page here: http://www.mgh.harvard.edu/depts/diabetes/type1research.htm These trials are starting soon, but need $$$$ to get underway. If you have any questions please email me. I am NOT affiliated with Dr. Faustman in any way shape or form. I just want a cure for Type I diabetes, so I can fly again!!

She is happy to try - she also had to go around all the neighbours and tell them not to feed the cat - not a happy little pussycat!! It was wonderful to see you again - next time give us some more warning and we will get in some creme caramels and some stiff competition for you ! take care, susie

Whilst talking about it, he mention Beechcraft, which I presumed was your Aircraft. After looking at your route, it took me back to 1944, when after an operational tour I was posted to the British Military Mission to Roumania. My Skipper and I (Navigator) were given a Beechcraft Expediter - C45F - to do our duty as the flying section of the Mission. Our trips took us over your flight in this area. I hope your success so far carries on into the future. with many more happy Landings. Vernon

Comments:Hi Douglas and Ty, The unmistakable sound of your Baron approaching and the landing at Gympie brought back happy memories for all our family of our years in Papua New Guinea (1962/78) where we flew more often in Barons than any other type of aircraft. Your flight is a wonderful way to create awareness in the community that Diabetes is not the end of ones dreams. When our dog "Sir Joh" was diagnosed 7 years ago we were devastated as we did not know that dogs could even get Diabetes let alone lead a normal life with twice daily human Insulin injections ! Later we were told that most owners just have the dog (or cat) "put down" ! Imagine if that was the norm for humans ! As we knew practically nothing about Diabetes we all three became members of the Gympie Diabetic Support Group - we believe that "Sir Joh" is the only Canine member of a Diabetes Support Group in Australia - possibly the world ? It was wonderful that you made the effort to fly up and talk to us all and the Gympie Airsports Club appreciated your visit as well ! Good luck and perhaps one day we may meet again - we will keep you posted on our activities here

Comments:Hi Douglas This is a fantastic journey that you are undertaking. I'm so glad that something is being done about the restrictions being imposed on those of use with Type 1 who love flying in the uk. I applied to the RAF in 1971 and was awaiting the interview stage when I got the condition so I didn't even get as far as you. I was previously in the ATC and flew Chipmunks a few times. I have taken some lessons in light aircraft, gliders, microlights and helicopters but never been allowed to fly solo. I have even tried to find work in the US to at least let me fly as you do. Well done again and I hope the result will not be too late for me to get my wings.

Comments:Dear Mr Cairns I have this morning perused your website with some interest and feel we at Justin Vention Ltd. have a product that may be very useful for you. Australian flies can be very irritating at this time of year, particularly in dusty, outback locations where Kangaroo carcasses are often stored near runways for human fast food purposes. We have recently patented a highly secret product which was originally invented to keep sheep safe from isolated farmers. We have evidence, from quite considerable experimentation, that flies are in fact slighty less interested in sheep which use our product than are farmers, but both farmers and sheep are usefully repelled. The sheep we used in our study were really very attractive you understand, so this may explain the farmers relatively higher enthusiasm. Anyway, our product is a simple bitchumen based, orange coloured oil that smells like a certain establishment in Bangkok on soi 33. Several head-to-toe applications a day should keep you clear. Please call +661 814 9525 for a free sample. Best of luck with your trip. Justin PS Wouldn't fancy a spot of dinner when it's all over would we? Quite like the look of your propeller...

Comments:I am mighty thrilled to read about Douglas and have already emailed him to say so. It is indeed an achievement that UK has modified its laws to permit juvenile diabetics to fly aircraft. Sadly, here in India, due to lack of awareness, juvenile diabetes is looked upon as a stumbling block and one is often dissuaded from taking up routine desk jobs. To think of taking the task of piloting a plane is too far-fetched. I myself have been refused by a few banks (as also a few others at Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Mumbai) for desk jobs though the concerned organisations took great care not to admit this fact in as many words. But, the moment you mention you are a diabetic, they drop you like a hot brick. Ignorance, Insensitivity or plain callousness - call it what you wish to. Anyways, I wish Douglas the very best. I'm really very thrilled for him. He is indeed a role model for diabetics to look up to.

Comments:Dear Doug, St. Joseph is working! Glad to read of your happy landings thus far. Remember God put St. Joseph in charge of the Christ Child and the Blessed Mother when they were in harm's way, especially in Bethlehem when Herod was intending on killing Jesus. Seems sometimes the most unassuming folks are entrusted with great responsibility. Was thinking the St. Joseph prayer card I gave you went into battle with Emperor Charles in 1505 with the Crusades. Emperor Charles was from Spain and Christopher Columbus was on his great discovery during his reign. Who knows, maybe Columbus carried the St. Joseph card that gives such great protection. "Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6 Good luck! Eileen Smith & Family
