Comments:THIS is the best news of the last 10 days, since the slap in my face, when I was diagnosed with Diabetes. Probably type 1, because not at all corresponding with the type 2 profile. Age 46, an active and otherwise "healthy" female with PPL. Proud half-owner of a DHC1-Chipmunk, (the other half is owned by my husband). Aviation is the centre of gravity of our life. For now on medication (unacceptable in Belgium), but perhaps/probably possible to obtain a class 2 medical with safety pilot in Swiss. With the medication and drastically changed nutrition I already manage to take control over my blood sugar (within 10 days). Although I fully realize that I am just in the beginning of this new "life style project", I am determined to continue flying. Your exploit and experience mean a huge step for (diabetes-)mankind, thank you so much for your efforts. My aim is to get in full control of "my diabetes" and to convince the European Authorities that a healthy type 1 "patient" can be in full control of his blood sugar and can safely fly aircraft with no risk for him self or the public. P.S. Have a look at our Wedding Fly-In pictures of 1 Sep 07 in Theux-Laboru (Belgium). 42 visiting aircraft from Belgium, UK, Holland, Denmark, Australia (ok the latter came by commercial plane)… of which 75 % in old-timers (of course).

In the future their is a possibility (cannot be scaled) that I could eventually fly commercially in the UK and hopefully this flight could be useful in persuading the CAA (UK) to permit this type of flying for type 1 diabetics

As the mother of a type 1 for the past 11 years and a "type 3 diabetic", I had become fatigued and complacent. The information in your book reminded me that it's all worth it. Douglas, you have done more than most people will ever dream of doing, with or without diabetes! Tally ho!

Comments:Hello Doug- Simply awesome story. I, too, was an Air Force instructor pilot when diagnosed one year ago. Kudos to you for not giving up over the years, and making a return to flying in a big way! I've also begun to fly again on a Class III. To all reading this: DO NOT GIVE UP! If you can control it, you can fly! As Michael Hunter (type 1 aerobatic pilot) says, "the only limits are those you choose to accept". Doug, now that it has been a few years, how about a repeat trip? We need that kind of visibility now more than ever! Very best of continued luck, and keep flying safe!

Comments:Mr. Cairns - WOW! What a true inspiration to the "rest of us", diabetic or not! I was diagnosed about 6 months ago, and, like you, will be getting separated from the US Air Force soon, ending a flying career. I've been instructing here in the T-1A (Beechjet) at Vance AFB for a few years and was chosen to fly the U-2 Dragon Lady just weeks before my diagnosis. Bummer! I still NEED to fly, and will be submitting for FAA Third Class this month. Great video clips from Mtn flying in CO! Being from Montana, I've done a lot of canyon-running in the T-1 ! Anyone esle reading this, PLEASE feel free to contact me! We need to "stick together" and network - it's the only way to get our voices heard and make our case - people like Doug, Michael Hunter (flightfordiabetes.com), and others will help bring the necessary visibility to flying with diabetes! God Bless!

Comments:Dear Douglas Cairns, I hope you get a chance to read this, because, as of about 11 minutes ago (when i discovered you and what you've done)you are my hero. i've been living with type 1 diabetes since i was nine years old, i am now 20 and my lifelong dream has been to fly (commercially or privately). Growing up, i was told by numerous people that there is no way i can fly with my condition, so i kind of lost sight of that dream. I've been attending the "Transport Training Center of Canada" trying to aquire my commercial "AZ" driver's permit, but because of my diabetes, i am going through a tough time trying to get all of the medical issues solved with the department of transportation. There are quite a bit of things i would appreciate discussing with you if you have the time. Please write back "your biggest fan."

My pancreas was removed and I became an instant diabetic. Through my Department of Transport (Canada) Doctor's efforts, the Depatment of Transport has allowed me to continue flying under a Recreational lisence, with an annual medical required. As I am wearing a pump and I never lost consciousness due to a hypoglycaemia I wonder why Austrian authorities don't want to let me get behind a yoke. I hope that I'll find a way to fly to convince them, that a well tuned type-I-diabetic is able to control a plane safely, as Douglas has demonstrated.

Comments:Dear sir: I am an insulin dependent diabetic with flying aspirations and two years ago I got my medical with the FAA provisions for flying. Unfortunately Sept 11, 2001 happened and I lost my aviation job and also my opportunity to fly, cause of lack of funds.Anyway I'm hoping that soon I shall get back my flying finances. Meanwhile I'm definitely glad that someone is proving to the government as well as the general populace that normal everyday events do not have to be altered because of diabetes. I'm on an insulin pump and for awhile that seemed to complicate things but I got my medical and was very happy. Lord Bless you.

I admire your determination in promoting showing the fact that when well disciplined a diabetic can do anything including record breaking. Congratulations! I am in charge of an information display here (notice board and an electronic one) in the company. Can I display your story and few of your photographs to bring the message that one can have an entirely normal life despite diabetes? sincerely Adhi

It has always been a dream for me to fly a plan by my self, and I have spend many many hour's in flight simulation. Now my dream can come to life, because for sure when I move to the US I will work hard to get a private pilot certificate. This is very very good news. Great Site Per Jakobsen

Comments:Congratulations Doug and well done! I recently learned of your flight through an article in Diabetes Interview. I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes at the end of 2001 (age 41), and was forced into medical retirement from flying, although I have been fortunate enough to retain my management position with United Airlines. I regained my Class III medical certificate in 12 months, and can once again take to the skies, although not in a Boeing 777! I have maintained very tight control of my A1C levels, and have every intention of regaining my Class I medcal certificate someday and resume my flying career. It is my hope that medical technology and the FAA will "meet in the middle" and find a way to re-certify diabetics as they have heart patients. I would be interested in discussing what contacts you have made in your efforts, and share the progress I have made to date. Best wishes, and safe flying!

Comments:Congrats Doug. I saw a note of your feat in the AOPA Magazine. First I'd heard of it, and I'm most interested. I was working as night freight pilot flying little propjet Mitsubishis. In February of 2000, I had a cerebral vascular event (stroke).  A major cause was undiagnosed Type II diabetes. I previously had passes two successive 1st Class FAA physicals (USA). I no longer will ever be able to obtain a medical certificate required for returning to that profession. It was interesting ro note tht I can get a 3rd class medical and thanks to you I am looking into that now. DS ATP Learjet; 12,400 TT; 4200PIC LearJet;

Comments:Hi Douglas, I learnt to fly in 1966 when I was 17. I passed my commercial theory but developed type one diabetes and lost my aircraft licence. In 1982 I returned to gyroplane flying when there was a lesser medical for gyroplanes and ultrlights, and became a gyroplane instructor in 1990. I have flown over 4000 hours in gyroplanes since 1982, 3000 of which have been training students since 1990. I always have the problem of my diabetes. I happen to be a tall poppy, and quite outspoken re safety in the gyroplane industry in Australia, and so there are people who would like to bring me down using this weak link in my chain. I have fought and won four different battles with these people over the last 13 years. It is a breath of fresh air to hear of your passion regarding operating aircraft safely with type one diabetes. Douglas, have a look at my website which has a number of my stories as well as my background. I would love to strike up a relationship with you. The technology growth from animal insulin to the wonderful synthetic insulin, and the changing from urine testing to instant blood glucose monitoring has greatly improved the control of type one Diabetes. Unfortunately the authorities have not kept pace with this technology growth. Your adamant supporter. Aussie Paul.
