| Comments: | Earl and I serve as volunteers in the Southeast Volusia Historical Museum of New Smyrna Beach, FL. Though I had no one in my family involved in aviation in WWII, I do have a keen interest in the Nazi Germany aspect of the war. But I digress ............
Today 20.01.09 I handed off a folder filled with information on Lt. Col. John "Jack" Bolt, a New Smyrna Beach homegrown aviation hero to Earl for his collection. The folder and copies of biographies, obituaries, etc. was originally brought into the Museum by NSB resident and close friend of Lt. Col. Bolt's, Mr. Jack Ascherl the day before. I told Jack I'd take it all home to peruse, which I did and even to an aviation "dummy" it was a good read. The SVHS has only a small cabinet displaying WWII military memorabilia and because Lt. Col. John "Jack" Bolt flew with the Black Sheep Squadron under "Pappy" Boyinton I'm hoping we can "tweak" our display to feature our famous hometown hero more prominently. |

Lt Joseph Rubin was the pilot. The crew bailed out somewhere around lingren, germany and became pow's except one who was killed in action when his parachute didn't open. My Dad didn't talk much about the war and when he did I was too young to appreciate it. Since he passed away I've been researching as much as I can and realize the sacrifice they all made back in WWII. All these men are heroes and should be treated as such. They gave us so much Didn't they! Thanks for your site and give my best to Mr. Anderson. |

After his honorable discharge, Earl returned to his hometown, New Smyrna Beach, Florida and worked on the FEC Railway, as did his father and my father. He and I are active in the same church and are good friends. We are all proud of Earl's military service and enjoy hearing him tell about when his plane was shot down over France he evaded capture by the German soldiers, while making his way to Spain nd eventually back to the States. |

I assumed he was somehow involved with the 8th AF. I thanked him for all he and his comrades had done for those of us who were not yet born. His name is James J. Redmond and he flew with the 509th Sq /351st BG. I am so grateful to have met him and to have been able to thank him in person. My wife's Uncle is Harvey William Powell. He flew 30 missions from Polebrook, 509th Squadron, between Sept. 1944 and March 1945 as the pilot of a B-17. He will turn 86 in a few days, and continues to live at the Air Force Village West in Riverside, CA, near March AFB, as an Air Force retiree. His wife Jean, whom he married before joining the AAF, also survives with him. One son, Nick Powell. I have written a book for family about his experiences as a B-17 pilot. Would be interested in contact with any of his original crew or their relatives, or any others who remember him. The crew were Kenneth J. Pfleging, engineer; Johnnie H. Parsons, radio operator; Arnold L. Mitchell, ball turret gunner; Edward N. Jull, waist gunner; Lucien J. Benevich, tail gunner, Harry U. Perry, navigator; Edward H. Anderson, bombardier; William S. Ramsey, co-pilot; and later replacement radio operator, Guinn R. Johnson. One original crew name is missing and unknown. Paul Crawford, P. O. Box 3502, Grand Junction, CO 81502 |

| Comments: | My father flew 51 missions in the B-17 with the 15th AAF, 301st Bomb Group, 352nd Bomb Squadron. Most of these missions were out of Foggia, Italy between October 1943 and April 1944. I was born while he was flying his missions. I am trying to get a listing of his missions from Military Archives. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who also flew from Foggia. Unfortunately, I never had any long detailed conversations with my father about flying B-17's during the war, while he was alive. |

| Comments: | I married Joan Rutkowski, and Harry Keck was my brother-in-law. He had 7 children, two before going into the Air Force and 5 after. He kept a record of many if not all of his 35 missions, including dates, specific targets, bomb loads &/or mission and many personal asides, details and descriptions that are both riveting and fascinating to read. I have copies of some of his diary pages dating from September 13, 1944 to March 4th. His last mission was over the Ulm, Germany specifically. [6-500lb.GP & 6-500 lb. clusters of incinderaries]. WOW! Thank God Harry and his very successful crew made it out alive, many didn't as we know. His diary includes pictures of Lt. Bramlett's crew. The number 16-3-45X on one of the pictures identifies that crew. Does anyone know about them? |
